We have had positive experiences with them over the years with our four animals, but our most recent experience truly highlighted Dr. Alwen's veterinary knowledge. After sudden onset throat swelling in our senior dog, Dr. Alwen knew exactly what to do to treat her in a non invasive way. She is a very large female Doberman and we have had issues with other vets being worried working with her- but he read her body language and was able to work easily with her. She is back to being happy and healthy as can be. I will continue to bring my dogs and cats here as long as we have them- the knowledge and care provided is top notch. read more

If you have a bully breed don't take your dog here! Dr Alwin was visibly tense and scared on my dog from the second he walked in the door and even said "oh no a pit bull". He immediately grabbed my dog from behind and cornered him without introducing himself to the dog. When my dog got scared and put his tail between his legs, he told me he was uncomfortable with my dog. This was easily avoidable with basic dog handling skills. He also proceeded to purposely scare my dog, a couple more times. My dog is not the most athletic (he's more cuddly than agile) and the vet threw a couple treats at his face and laughed when it hit his face and scared him. Then proceeded to do it a couple more times. I've done a lot of work on confidence and training with my dog since rescuing. I now have the happiest lab pit who loves people and other dogs, but this vet clearly didn't like dogs. He never once petted him or even let my dog sniff him. It was a bummer because our first visit with Edna we saw a female vet who was phenomenal, kind, knowledgeable, and clearly loved animals. Jeff was none of these things. Bottom line if you have a big dog, a pit mix, or a rescue find a different vet. read more

Dr.Alwen and staff has helped my my entire pack of animals on several occasions specifically this first quarter of the year. From one of my goldens getting a severe abscess on her neck he saw her right away cleaned and clipped and prescribed medications. Two weeks ago unfortunately my siamese kitten broke her leg and Dr alwen performed surgery and we have an awesome little tripod now. Now today unfortunately with a pack we get some unforeseen dog fights and our little dachshund got bit. We called right away and she was seen RIGHT AWAY. If I could give this place No Stars I would. I took my cat in to have hair mates removed. The vet required an annual inspection, current shots and an overall look see to check her health. I was told the removal of just the mates would be about $130(with no anesthesia(shots) and roughly $30 more if needed. I was told this would cover the meds and annual check up. I go to pick her up and was told the price would be $265. I had to pay it and was very upset. "Lucky" and I have been together ~15 yrs. I currently am unemployed and my only income is food stamps. My councilor said I should keep the cat for my mental health. I was offered a loan of $165 for her health visit. I do not like being misquoted or lied to. This very is highly unethical and I will no longer go to them. I highly suggest no on else does either. This is a bad business with dishonest vets. read more

I have always found Edna Valley vet and Dr Waldsmith and staff to be extremely knowledgeable. professional, caring, helpful. Honestly I've received some of the best service and care here from the best in the business. They assisted with my retired sport horse and my rescue raccoon when I had no one else to help him. They do a wonderful job and always have the most up-to-date cutting-edge technology. It is an excellent equine health center and widely respected practice. I have worked with a lot of veterinarians over the years while competing in dressage and through my career in equine health. Here's my opinion to this vet Jeff Alwen. For a vet who is scared to take care of a dog is already unusual. He put an instruction to his staff not to accept my dog. My dog never bite anybody in his 10 years. I believed that dogs can tell a person's energy way better than humans. So if ever my dog did what this vet claimed, then the issue is with the vet itself. Please do not take your pets here for vaccines. My cat contracted a terrible abscess after a routine vaccination. The vet himself doesn't perform this procedure, the vet techs do. Having been a pet owner for more than 20 years and seen several different vets it's my opinion that Edna Valley vet is the most incompetent vet that I've ever been unfortunate enough to experience. The very bottom of the bucket in the veterinarian sector. When my pet was suffering with an issue that should of been very simple to diagnose my pet was completely misdiagnosed on three (3) separate occasions while racking up an expensive bill but offering no relief for my pet. Edna Valley vet did manage to sell me X-rays and expensive pet food which had absolutely nothing to do with the real issue but still offered no pain relief for my suffering pet. It was only when i found a completely different vet that my pet was diagnosed accurately on the first visit and finally given relief from unnecessary suffering. To make matters even worst when i contacted Edna Valley explaining that they misdiagnosed my pet on three (3) different occasions they completely denied any wrongdoing and was completely unaccountable and hung up the phone. Not only is Edna Valley veterinarian grossly incompetent but they're also grossly unaccountable, This review is my opinion. read more

It allows you to take your 4-legged friends in for routine shots and vaccinations without paying for the vet exam. My vet in Porterville referred me to Dr. Alwen at Edna Valley Veterinary for a growth in her ear that required surgery. Dr. Alwen and his staff are awesome. Dr. Alwen removed the growth which turned out to be cancerous and required an additional surgery to remove all of it. Both surgeries went well and Dr. Alwen was able to remove all of the cancer. The clinic took very good care of my Lucy and I would definitely recommend them to anyone needing a good vet. Dr. Alwen and his staff were all very nice and very compassionate. I did not enjoy my visit here unfortunately. Due to COVID, my pup hasn't had the opportunity to go into an actual vet visit with me in the room so I've now learned he gets very stressed out in these situations. Unfortunately, the staff that I came to face to face did not exceed my expectations when handling my little guy. I'm sure they are great with pets who love everyone and does not get stressed out with vet visits but I would not recommend to anyone who has an animal that can get scared, please go to a fear free clinic for those animals because it's hard to remedy that situation once they have a bad experience as we have had to learn the hard way. EDIT: In response to what the owner said below, I did notify the office manager (who sounded fantastic) when making an appointment that I was noticing my pup starting to act nervous around strangers and what I knew was starting out to be a fear period and wanted to make sure this particular place would be a good fit. When I arrived, there were no fear free principles practiced at the time of visit. I would recommend the owner to receive a certification on this if they would like to say that they practice fear free steps when handling nervous ones. Lastly, the owner mentioned that they take their time in order to create a low stress environment. This was the complete opposite of what I felt. My dogs are rather large and don't fit very well on the dog scale, the EVVC team found a work around -- the horse scale next door! Dr. Alwen and Edna Valley Vet was literally a lifesaver for us. We were in from out of town for our son's college graduation. Our dog started showing the signs of an intestinal blockage, which we were familiar with from past experiences and surgeries. We called Edna Valley. The staff at the clinic wasted no time contacting our regular vet, geting our dogs records sent over and setting us for an appointment within a couple of hours. When we arrived , Dr. Alwen met with us, examined our dog, did X-rays and did an exploratory scope within an hour. He determined that surgery would be required and was able to perform the surgery the same day. Throughout the process his communication was clear with reasonable and accurate estimates of the costs across the possibles scenarios. The staff in the office was friendly, professional and efficient. We were called regularly with updates on Koa's progress. We will be taking him home tomorrow. We found the overall cost to be less than what we've paid in the past for similar procedure with a much higher quality of service. Our Sofee is a standard poodle and has been a patient of Dr. Alwin's since 2009. He diagnosed her with Addison's disease and literally saved her life. When we carried her in she had blue gums and despondent. Typically, from what I've researched, Addison's disease is not typically diagnosed in a one year old puppy. Sofee is now going on 9 years old and as maintenance Dr. Alwin gives her an injection of Percorten once every 25 days and we give her a 1/4 tablet of Prednisone every other day in her breakfast. To look at her you would never know she has such a disease. She still plays like a puppy. Dona & the techs are very accommodating . . . it's nice to be on a first name basis. Very disappointed!!!!! May 2017 our dog started to favor his back right leg, within a few weeks he could not put any weight on it. The Vet said his right back ACL was totally blown out &Was told he needed repair surgically. The Dr mentioned that at some point his left leg may need to be done but that the right was worse. At first I did not want to do the surgery. It seems like a very painful hard surgery on a puppy & it is costly but we love our little guy. Our pup is 10 & has hopefully years ahead..so..After much thought we decided to go ahead and get the surgery. WE brought him in to be operated on early June after considering the dog's age, cost, rehab, and pain, for the surgery. We came in the evening to pick up our baby from surgery we were not allowed to see him until after we of course paid. When our dog was brought out to us his back left leg had been operated on not his right! The surgeon was not present when we picked up the dog just the staff which tried to assure us that they did the correct leg& that their paperwork was spot-on&that they did nothing wrong. We were stunned! When we looked over the paperwork it doesn't say anything about the left leg until on the day of exam. When we brought our dog in the dr. Didn't remember that it was our dog getting the surgery he made a comment that he thought it was a much bigger sized dog & would have to check and see if he had a plate for our size of dog. This is impt because I think this is where this mistake happened. I think the Dr thought he was doing the other dog which probably needed their left leg done... My husband was with me And on the day of exam we did not sign off on the left leg.... only on the use of anesthesia & pain meds When a human has surgery we sign off on what is going to be done Now with 2 bad back legs he cannot even support himself. Several weeks later we decided to talk to a lawyer but we were only able to talk to one firm who would take a case like this, still unresolved the surgeon has not tried to contact or resolve the issue and we're worried that this just cost our pup alot of pain with no resolve. I really don't want to go the legal route.. I would have prefered for the doctor (who is the owner) to offer a solution . Very disappointed because we know a terrible mistake was made and could have been prevented with better communication by the whole staff .. I don't think it's the customers job to do the communicating but if you're getting surgery for your animal make them put it in writing!!! UPDATE: after reviewing the comment left by the VET.... First off to be clear WE DECIDED NOT TO PURSUE LEGAL. THE LAWYER DIDN'T DENY US... IT WAS OUR CHOICE!!!!!!!!! IF I NEED TO I WILL GET THE DOCUMENTATION FOR THIS TO SHOW YOU ARE JUST THROWING OUT MIS INFORMATION!!!! Your comments & lack of accountability make us want to change our minds! Not to mention you disclosed patient confidential info like my dogs name! Your follow-up comment regarding what happened during the exam and the follow-up is full of inaccuracies. First, I left the initial exam WITH my husband. WE said WE would need to decide on what procedure we wanted! WE never decided on a procedure that day! It appears the Dr. entered the notes into his system inaccurately. Also we picked up our dog early not the day of! Another inaccuracy! To me it seems that the Dr just filled in the exam notes with a presumtion that we would go with the cheaper surgery. WE decided later!!! As far as the doctor getting ahold of me that is also an inaccurate statement as I never received a call from him or a message. Get in writing what is going to be done! (PROTECT YOUR PET AND CLARIFY BECAUSE THEY DON'T!!) In addition, The only forms I signed for the surgery was for anesthesia & pain killers.! It is obvious to me that several mistakes were made! You deal with tons of animals.This is is my dog I know what happened in that exam room what we were told & what transpired! The only part of the surgery I prepaid for was $500 on my medical credit card BECAUSE your front desk recommended I try it. The cost of difference of the surgeries is far more than $500! The confusion during pickup WAS THAT YOU HAD DONE THE WRONG LEG!!! My husband wasn't happy with the prices because you overcharge and gouge people! The DR spoke w/ my husband the AM of & even went to ck to see if he had the plate because he was expecting a bigger dog! Instead of owning up to this you have made inaccurate statements to cover up the mistakes that were made! It has been almost 5 months since the surgery.. not recent! We still have not heard from the Dr. I hope that many people read this and see the truth and choose Another vet as we are still left very disappointed at what happened. Dr Alwin - you made a mistake! Our dog Cedar tore her ACL and after checking vets in Santa Barbara where we live, Edna Valley's prices couldn't be beat and they got her in for surgery within days and it was very comforting knowing she wouldn't need to wait weeks for surgery. I was very pleased with my visit with Edna Valley. This was my second visit with them I had taken my cat to them a number of years ago.. My dog was due to get spayed and had almost finished her heat and their recommendation to wait a few weeks was very nice of them. The office staff and nurses were so very nice. They weren't pushy or trying to get me to do additional procedures etc.. They took care of my Zoe.I have gotten a coupon for the spay at a Vet Clinic they host at the Lemos stores every month. We always got good care for our animals at this clinic, but they were really pushy with expensive add-ons. Plus, with the fee for office visits and vaccinations we ended up spending a ton of money on our two dogs for routine vaccinations. Also, they weren't very good with one of our dogs who is fearful at vets. We've taken her to other vets and not had issues, but felt like Edna Valley Vet treated her like an aggressive dog even though she's never had issues at the vet just been nervous (she is a german shepherd mix, so not a small dog). Overall they weren't a good fit for us so we switched to another vet. read more

Dr. Alwen and his team have proven over and over to be trust worthy, compassionate and loving towards all my pets, and very experienced in veterinarian medicine. Unfortunately, my dog, "Koa", has been a regular at this clinic with major problems in the last 5 years. He was playing "stick" with me one day and suddenly sat down and did not want to get up. He had to be taken in the clinic by a stretcher. He had a disc that was damaged and required back surgery. The disc was in a "tricky" spot a the end of the spine and the surgery was risky as far as Koa recovering 100% without damage to the back legs as well as bowel and urinary issues. Dr Alwen performed the surgery. He is an amazing surgeon for animals. Koa had a long recovery but everything turned out great for him. Koa was recently very sick and had to be seen in the Arroyo Grande ER for animals. The vet had to give Koa a blood transfusion and then he was transported back to Dr. Alwen's clinic for care during regular business hours. Koa was bleeding internally and continued to loose blood. Dr. Alwen had to do abdominal surgery to find out the source of the blood loss. Koa needed another emergency blood transfusion and Dr. Alwen brought his own dog in the clinic to give blood to Koa. Koa was in a grave situation. The staff was so wonderful to both of us. I was able to come visit him in the am and the pm after work. I sat next to him and talk to him and pet him. I was amazed to find out that Dr. Alwen came to the clinic late at night, to check on Koa's condition and make sure he was OK during the most critical times after surgery. Each day was touch and go. Koa was in the clinic for many days and nights recovering. Everyone was "pulling" for him. He is an incredible dog (10 years old at the time) and everyone loves him so much. After I left one day to visit Koa, his cage was open and he got up and started to walk to the front to find me. He was getting better! Everyone there was so supportive and loving. It was a difficult thing to have to go through but Koa made it! He is the "miracle" dog at the clinic. Dr. Alwen and his staff are the "miracle" workers! Koa comes to the clinic for "lazier" treatment for his arthritis. He is considered a VIP with everyone. The lazer treatment they offer at the clinic really makes a difference in how Koa feels and the relief he gets is clearly noticable. I'm shocked that there aren't more reviews for this practice! Dr. Alwen is amazing... the best I'd found in SLO County, and that was after trying nearly all of them. I owe the life of one of my best friends to this clinic. I had left my dogs with friends/roommates while I was away for a weekend. I trusted them because they know me and my dogs well, and they promised to take the best of care of them. Unfortunately, when Kira started vomiting about 20 minutes after I left, no one thought it was a big enough deal to call me (or a vet!!!). And when she continued to vomit all weekend long, no one called me. When I finally arrived home, I knew something was wrong. She tried as best she could to "greet" mommy, but she was simply listless. I went to check her gums... no need. She was so dehydrated that her mouth was totally dry. That night she threw up dark patches of blood several times. First thing the next morning, we were in Dr. Alwen's office while I tried to hold back tears because I knew this wasn't going to be good. It turns out that Kira's kidneys were shutting down. She spent a week at Edna Valley. Every day when I went to visit her, Dr. Alwen would come in and talk to me. I appreciated that he took the time to do it himself and didn't just send in one of the techs. I was a pre-vet student, and I understood enough that I wanted to actually be informed of what was going on, not just consoled. I also appreciated that Dr. Alwen didn't patronize me. For the first couple days, there was no certainty that Kira would make it, or that she wouldn't have permanent damage. He never came in saying "There, there... everything will be fine." When he wasn't sure what would happen, he said so. It was hard to hear, but it prepared me for the worst if it should happen. Kira recovered, and after a couple months of prescription diet the only evidence of her ordeal is an annual kidney panel to make sure things are going well. I'm so sad to have moved away, because I would certainly have trusted Dr. Alwen with every pet I own. (By the way, I can't remember the name of the other gal Dr. that we saw there once, but she was wonderful as well. My poodle really liked her!) Routine visits were always a good experience, and I like that Dr. Alwen would let me hold my dogs for their shots (Kira is very nervous and being held by strangers does NOT help a stressful situation.). Princess had her spay surgery there and everything went beautifully (and the cost was less than HALF of what Oak Park Vet Clinic was going to charge me!). read more

Our Lab needed left shoulder surgery due to an OCD injury. Our regular vet recommended Edna Valley Vet Clinic because Dr. Alwen was experienced in this kind of surgery. We live 30 min away so driving to the Edna Valley Clinic in SLO, before work, to drop off our dog was not convenient by any means but we wanted it done right so it wasn't a problem....until..... They had x-rays done on both shoulders and there was a definite injury on the left, the right was assumed to have the same problem eventually so we scheduled the left surgery first, opted for a less invasive procedure with a quicker recovery time. All seemed well and a couple months later we scheduled a second surgery for the right shoulder. The morning of the surgery I got an overnight bag, bed, and my dog ready to drop off in SLO by 7am and then drove 30 miles back to work. An hour later, my boyfriend calls me and says that the equipment for the right shoulder surgery hasn't been sterilized and that they would need an extra day to prepare.......Mind you, I made an appointment for this surgery in advance, I live 30 miles away, my dog is stuck there until I get off work at 5pm and they close at the same time...again the 30 min drive which means they would be closed and he'd have to stay overnight....WHY THE HELL would I make an appointment if everything wasn't ready for the procedure???! Then Dr. Alwen calls me to save face and says we can do the (more invasive procedure) type B procedure, "like we did the last time". I was so taken aback at this. The left shoulder surgery was supposed to be the less invasive procedure! Unbelievable. They told us one thing and went and performed an unauthorized procedure that first surgery, and had us believing our dog only needed a 3month recovery time when it should have been longer; jeopardizing my dog's quality of life! You don't drop $1,600 on a surgery to be misinformed! So unprofessional! My boyfriend picked up our dog but forgot to get the overnight bag and bed I had left with them. I called ahead of time to let them know I'd come up on a Saturday they were open to get the things back. When I got there they didn't know where my stuff was, The receptionist looked around for his bed and came out with the shell of the bed but the actual bedding part was missing. I told her I live too far away to drive 30 miles AGAIN to get the bedding and that they need to mail it to us. They have our address on file OBVIOUSLY and it has never been sent. My best friend Hank has been a patient from the time we moved to the Central Coast. He has had two significant surgeries, been treated after being hit by a car and undergone chemo-therapy. While we don't know what the future holds, he's more than holding his own. Dr Alwin is a man of great skill and I compare that to various Vets I've frequented in 30 years of dog ownership in LA and Orange county. Because he had the ability to consult with a colleague at a Texas vet school., he was able to find the injury Hank suffered in the car encounter(others couldn't) and the ACL surgery as well as the Cancer surgery and treatment have gone about as well as possible. This place is awful I went in with an x-ray from my vet to show the doctor regarding my little dog's leg Immediately he said he could not read the x-ray and charged me over $400 for another x-ray that he took in his office he recommended the surgery later I found out was unnecessary and said that she might have to lose her leg because I looked on yelp I made an appointment with a second opinion doctor and immediately he looked at my first x-rays that I had From my vet He said could read them very clearly and that she did not have to have an operation this was something she was probably born with he gave me some anti-inflammatories and she was just fine in two days I would never ever recommend going to this clinic I would go down to Arroyo Grandy next to the 24 hour emergency hospital There is a wonderful specialist there that has a lot more experience and he saved my dog from an unnecessary operation that may have resulted in loosing her leg read more
