This is truly a special place. The cafe is wonderful and the coffee is really good (Rawr Cafe) and then there is the kitty viewing room where there are more than 20 cats for you to hang out and play with. Oh the feline goodness. There is a large playroom for group socialization and then private rooms in the back where kitties who need more privacy are kept. Be sure to visit both. The staff and volunteers here are wonderful and very knowledgable. I just loved this. My recent visit was my second time there and I will for sure be going again. I applied for one cat but cat town suggested a different cat that they thought may be a better fit for my family. After 4 months with our new cat I can confidently say the staff were right. I've been to cat town twice. Once before COVID and just recently. My little loves cats, but we can't have one yet. (Cats are little fuckers full of fur, and cuteness) my little loves this place. My husband went with us this last time and he fell in love with one of the cats. Although we cannot adopt, we love to visit the cats and play with them. Wanna play with some cats, and drink some coffee go here. It's across from Grocery Outlet, but go to the website first and make a reservation. It's not expensive, but if there's like 3 of you it gets pricey, but I believe it's worth it. The $$ goes to helping the cats, and maintaining the building. You can also volunteer too. read more

4 stars because I love Cat Town's mission: to give every cat a chance to find a loving home! I've visited Cat Town on two occasions, both walk-ins towards the end of the day. I'd suggest reserving your spots ahead of time if you're going on the weekends. There is plenty of street parking nearby. Walking in, you'll first see their cafe/shop area with tons of adorable cat t-shirts, bags, pins, etc. Cats are located in a separate room and they'll ask you to sanitize your hands before walking in. My first time here, I really enjoyed the experience. The cats were awake and playful. The second visit, however, I was left disappointed. Cats were all asleep and I felt like the staff were watching us like a hawk. They are very strict on the 1-hr timing. Totally understand if the cats are sleeping, but there are also a ton of rules here that don't seem to apply at other cat cafes (KitTea in SF). Kinda boring if you're just walking around looking at sleeping cats. Overall, love the idea, but I'm more excited to check out a cat cafe where I can hold/play with all the kitties!! read more

My wife and I have a tradition of visiting cat cafes in every city we visit. Cat Town was one of the best we've ever been to! The animals are well-treated, the staff is friendly and knowledgeable, the cafe is great, AND the shop sold us a toy that has become our cats favorite (and was made by a local). The only downside is that they don't sell their merch online. We love our cat but we're not going to fly across the country to get her another one of her favorite toy :) read more

I love this place and all the cats you get to pet and play with! The kitties are amazing and playful, all very taken care of with healthy shiny coats. You can purchase treats to bribe the cats and they all come running! Haven't been back here before Covid and so happy to be back and support this place! First visit today with my bestie, who donates quite a bit to Cat Town. I felt violated when told it was $10 per person to go in and see cats...that you cant even interact with, if they are sleeping. I have visited with my 5 and 7 year olds twice. The 7 year old loves cats, so we came here to get our fix. The first visit was at 3 pm, when a lot of cats were sleeping, so the second visit at 11 am was better. Because they have a lot of cats that need some space and aren't immediately social, we weren't able to pet a lot of cats. But that was alright, some were willing to play and just being around cats was nice. It also teaches children to respect animals if they don't want to be touched and that caring for sick cats is important. I like the mission of CatTown and am happy to support them. This is a cat adoption facility that specializes in rehabbing cats that are too shy or otherwise aren't considered easy to adopt. It also welcomes visitors of all ages to come (for a $10 donation) and gently play with cats in its care. We come visit whenever we need a cat fix (e.g. times when we weren't able to have cats, or times when we felt like time with MORE cats). We just visited here in May and found it's KITTEN SEASON! The staff is kind and knowledgeable, the facility well-run and noble in its mission. The cats are invariably adorable. This is our happy place. The art on the walls throughout is captivating and clever. The cats were content and seem very well cared for. Especially in the Cat Zone "apartments", the cats that may need a bit more time to warm up, or get acclimated, get some slightly more controlled one on one. Don't come here if what you have in mind is a cat cafe in Japan. Cat Town Cafe is more like cat adoption center with a coffee counter on the side. I find the name misleading but I should have done more research before hand. However, even as an adoption center the execution could surely have gone gone better. There's a small cafe where you can purchase coffee and simple food, and there's a room where you can play with cats - 8 people at a time. You can pay $10 to make a reservation online to play with some cats for an hour, or you could wait there for last minute openings (which rarely happens). The whole atmosphere wasn't relaxing at all. When I went, there were only 5 cats and 3 of them were napping. Hoards of people were waiting outside of the cat zone for a long time only to be told that there's no opening for drop-ins You should come here if you are considering adopting a cat though. But if you just want to hang out in a coffee shop with a bunch of cats, this isn't the place for you. read more

#14 What a cool place! I have visited Cat Town a couple times before, bringing various friends each time. I love the concept as I am a cat lover myself. I was trying to talk my friend into a cat adoption yesterday, so I said, "Simon, let's go to Cat Town and just look around." He agreed and off we went. We walked into the building and there were so many people there either waiting to play with the cats, already playing with the cats or just looking at the cats through the huge glass window. Simon asked me if he could just go in to see the cats behind the glass, "No, Simon, you need to make an appointment." There were at least 5 people ahead of us as well. We had a 20 minute wait, which is no big deal. Plenty to do to pass the time... The cafe offers little treats for people while they wait for the cat visitation. We enjoyed shortbread cookies shaped like cats with chocolate icing. Simon also ordered a hot chocolate. We had a great time chatting it up while we awaited our cat play time. When all was said and done, Simon did not decide on a cat yesterday; however, I feel like if I continue to work on him he will return and adopt a cat to raise in his loving home. A year ago, I walked into Oakland Animal Services and though there were many lovely kitties there, became aware of one shy 10 year-old cat who for some reason, just seemed to be calling out to me. She had been at OAS for several months. I really liked her, but didn't feel quite ready to adopt. The fantastic volunteers there got in touch with Cat Town (the members of which also volunteer at OAS, so they are aware of all the kitties who have a little extra trouble getting adopted) and almost before I knew it, Willow was walking in the door with some foster supplies and the offer of a ride back home with this beautiful lady by the name of Chala. I jumped at the chance to foster her and looking back, realized that my heart had already made a decision in favor of her, even if the rational part of my head was holding back. I fostered Chala for a month or two before realizing that I didn't want to part with her. She had experienced a rough time out on the streets in her former life and at the age of 10, I wanted to be the one who ensured she was comfortable and cared for, for the rest of her life. We finalized the adoption and Cat Town made me the happiest guy on the planet. Throughout the fostering and adoption process - and afterwards, Willow, Katie and Ann were fantastic. They were very communicative and helpful, with advice and support every step of the way. The experience couldn't have been better. Shortly after, I took in a stray kitten, and Chala started exhibiting some troublesome behavioral issues. Cat Town put me in touch with Dilara, a cat behaviorist from Feline Minds who came over, gave some great advice and helped me clear up Chala's problems. Fast forward a year, and I have just adopted a 3rd kitty. All 3 cats are co-existing in my small apartment quite peacefully and much of that I attribute to the great support and help I received from Cat Town and Feline Minds when first adopting Chala a year ago. You know, we all love cats, but it is so wonderful to see people who give up large amounts of their free time to work hard, and with great commitment, to help improve and save the lives of many, many cats. My boyfriend backed the Indiegogo campaign so we enjoyed a private sitting with six other friends and a room full of playful kitties. I'm glad they had a few weeks to bond with their environment before we came out, because the cats were really relaxed and excited to play. They're all on the young side, so they're full of curiosity and seemingly endless energy. There were a few older cats that hung out in the side room, napping, so we didn't bother them too much. I had been hearing a lot about the challenges of bringing this new market to the US - while still keeping within food and beverage laws as it relates to sanitary conditions. So I was a little surprised that we were able to take our tea and coffee into the play area with us. Of course we had to keep the lids on at all times, but what a relief that we could enjoy two wonderful things at the same time: playful kitties and pour-over Bicycle Coffee ;). You are not allowed to pick up or grab at the kitties, but at their age, the feather teaser is really the kind of reach you want to have anyway. As tiny as they are, young cat claws and teeth are super-sharp. Cat Town is considering installing a climbing wall so that the cats can get a much-needed look-out, and a 24/7 webcam for people to peek in at the kitties anytime. But I would also suggest some laser pointers. They're thinking that the max capacity would be 20 people at once in the large room, but my opinion is that anything more than 10 would start to overwhelm even the most outgoing of kitties. The soft openings are good for these kind of A-B testings, so I'm sure they'll figure out what works best. I wish them the very best of luck in this emerging market, with very few bumps in the road. I will definitely be back, since this is also an adoption center, they have will have new kitties in as the old ones are adopted. I fully expect that super-playful orange tabby to find a warm and loving home on Day One of the public opening. read more

Walking by I saw this cool little city in the window so me being the curious cat I am I walked around to the entrance. Once in you hear nice jazz playing. the staff is super friendly very inviting . I ended up getting a cookie which is so yummy but they sell all kinds of goodies including coffee . If you would like to visit the cats you need to tell the cashier so they can set you up with a time. I didn't have the time to play with the kitties but next time for sure.. My second time visiting, this time with both my husband and mom, this past Saturday! We absolutely love the idea of a cat cafe where you can relax and interact with kitties, while sipping tea/coffee. The facility is absolutely adorable with tiny little mansions and different structures made out of cardboard for them to lounge, sleep or climb on. There are string toys for you to play with them and a back area to watch the cats napping. The cafe itself it separated by a glass door and contains a cafe as well as cat memorabilia, clothing items, stickers and figurines for sale. There's lovely cat art work up on the walls and a ton of humor everywhere you look. We plan to come every weekend or other weekend, in hopes of finding a good match. As someone who's been involved with various local animal rescue groups as a volunteer and foster, my heart is always with helping homeless and abused animals in anyway I can, even if that means feeding and caring for their needs before myself. I love what the non profit is doing by helping bring the neediest and perhaps not as socialized cats into an environment that encourages them to interact with humans and get further exposure. Whether or not you are ready or able to adopt, you can always help by offering to become a foster or even making a one time donation to help support these wonderful rescue organizations! Ah, cat cafés. The fantastical image of snoozing felines on the laps of coffee sippers and inquisitive golden eyes staring at your plate of cake, passes through your head as you enter Cat Town. From the outside, the place indeed looks like heaven for these darlings, which countless YouTube videos, blogs, photos, and comics have been devoted. An expansive play area with cat-sized versions of Oakland's landmarks, with two trippy cat-themed murals popping with colors rivaling Lisa Frank's work... "This is fantastic", you think. "A true paradise for cats and coffee-nuts to mingle and snuggle." Except that's not really the case. As soon as you enter the front door, it's immediately obvious that here, cats rule and humans...dribble a bit. The café aspect is just a counter with pre-baked goods, teas, and coffee, to keep your mouth busy while you wait to get in the Cat Zone. Two benches serve as seating, with one along the wall that affords a view into paradise. And...that's it for the café part. So no, it's not a café per se. The word is in the name to denote that yes, there's coffee. But that's it. So much for pulling out your laptop to work and getting a furry butt on your keyboard. Oh wait, you're here for the cats! To get in the Cat Zone, one may wait for an hour-long spot to open, or pay $10 to ensure a spot at a designated time. Afternoons are nap time for the kitties, so do your best to avoid that. In the mornings, they can snuggle up to you, hide, or give two craps about those furless bipeds. Well, Cat Town is new, and they made things clear throughout their building process that the cats will be separated from food service areas. It's clearly meant to be a spacious playground for cats as well as an adoption center. The café part is just tacked on, to raise some funds for the non-profit shelter while providing nibbles. Two kinds of people will come here. One kind - the ones who live for the experience of being and playing with cats - will walk out happy. The other - those who want a full café experience with the added bonus of cats on the side - will grumble. Cat Town may not be perfect, but the owners did their best for a noble cause: providing loving homes for stray and feral cats. Plus, the minute they moved into their new home with my sister, they had excellent manners with the litter box and the food/water bowls. I love my little rescued kitties and I'm glad to know that many others will find loving homes thanks to shelters like this one. The open-room atmosphere is great for getting a better look at a cat's personality outside of a metal cage. The café was busy because yesterday was their grand opening. I had a 3 pm appointment with my husband and a friend who volunteers as a foster mom for this group. I ordered a tea while we waited. ($2.50 for a small cup). It was served scalding hot so I had a hard time drinking it (even holding it was difficult). I didn't put a lid on it (trying not to be wasteful of plastic) so I just tossed most of it when it was time to go into the room with the cats. You can take your drink in with you, but only with a lid, and it needs to be set on trays while you interact with the cats. The decorations are wonderful and the cats seemed lazy and stress-free, like they should be. There were lots of nooks for sleeping, playing, and hiding. Hopefully the loving people running this place will find permanent homes for lots of pretty kitties. read more

I have never came in contact with cats before Cat Town and since the environment here felt so safe and calm, I wasn't worried at all! My friends and I were lucky enough score a date on the weekend for 8 people ($10 donation/person) and it was well worth it! We entered in through the gift shop area. They had coffee and cute treats! EVERTYHING WAS CAT THEMED! It was super adorable! From cat mugs to cat macarons, we wanted to get everything. They also had a very cute sticker coin machine where my friends and I went CRAZY over. We probably spent around $20 total (they cost 50cents a piece!). In the surprise column, it contain random stickers and goodies. My friend got a free drink coupon and got a hot tea :) Our appointment was at 2PM, and all the kitties were taking their afternoon nap. Only 2 cats were awake and playful. It didn't matter though! The kitties were still super cute and they told us we could gently pet them. It did feel a little stuffy inside the cat room and I had to step out from time to time. Overall, a great place to pet and adopt kitties! I probably won't be visiting again since I think I am a little bit allergic, but I recommend it to all the cat lovers! This is a great place to visit if you're thinking about adopting a cat. If you're thinking of a relaxing place where you can have afternoon tea and play with cats... probably not as good of an idea. The cafe part where you can buy coffee and snacks are separate from the cat area because of health regulations, so you would have to finish your drink/snack before going into the other room to see the cats. You need to make a reservation online. I would not recommend dropping in. When I came a few months ago, I went with 5 other friends. We had to book 2 weeks in advance since the weekends were popular, and they only let in 10 people per one hour time slot. TIP: Try to get a morning/earlier time slot if possible. Cats, by nature, sleep around 18-20 hours a day. The cafe is open from 11am to 6pm, do the math. My time slot was from 5pm-6pm. When we were in there, all the cats were pooped out. 2/3 of them were sleeping in the back, where you're not supposed to disturb them. The other 1/3 were napping inside the cat city towers. It's a bit awkward waiting around for your turn to walk up to the cat towers (since the opening is so small) to pet the napping cats, since none of them were in the mood to play. For the majority of the hour, everyone was just kind of sitting around and talking to each other, not much interaction with the napping cats. I'm sure if I have came at an earlier time, they would have all been a lot more active. I'll admit, I was expecting something closer along the lines of a Japanese cat cafe, so I was a little bit disappointed. read more

Me and my partner randomly strolled into the Cat Town Café on a sweltering Wednesday afternoon, just expecting to stroke a few fluffy cats. However, we fell in love with two little 6 month old cats with two eye infections, who were subsequently abandoned and thrown out on the side of the road. So they were automatically irresistible for us to take home. They're cats. They do what they want. Which means they might want to play with you and they might roll their eyes at you. Make a reservation. Try to go as early as possible so the cats aren't all tired out. Read the rules. Be quiet in the quiet room. You can buy treats inside the cat room to feed the cats (one per customer.) You'll feel like the pied piper as the cats follow you around to get the treats. Some are really shy so they hide in the cat city...but they still purr when you pet them. Seek the shy ones out - they've usually been there for a long time and need more love to get them out of their kitty shells so they can find good homes. There are two bathrooms - ones for people who have played with cats and ones for those who haven't. Make sure you use the right one so they can keep their food license. :) read more

Oh my goodness, this was a dream come true because I absolutely love cats. I've heard about this place for quite some time now and I was finally able to come here since I was in the area. I was so so happy and so so excited to come here. Upon arrival, you'll see their little cafe where you could purchase snacks, pastries, coffee and drinks. You can bring those into the cat zone as long as it's from their cafe. There is also a donation box for you to donate to the shelter, which I highly recommend! My friends and I came here at around 4:45pm and since the cat zone was full, we checked in for the 5pm session. When it was our turn, I was in awe. The cat zone was such a lovely place. I loved what they did to the walls, the paintings, the "playhouses," and the sleeping areas. It's such a care-free for the cats and for us humans! The cats were very friendly. We got to talk to one of the volunteers and she was so nice! She was very knowledgable about this place and very friendly to the kitties. Overall, I highly recommend this place! I guess only a handful of people can go in every hour. I got a coffee, which was actually a super legit pourover. NAICE. My first cat café experience. As an avid cat lover, will definitely go back and maybe even find one to adopt! I didn't know going in that you have to make appointments (which makes a lot of sense... Oops), but we were lucky enough to get in within 30 minutes because somebody didn't show up. I think you can just call in or do it online before you go! Donations are taken before you enter, with a set of rules to abide by before going into the cat room. They are all cats that are up for adoption and being in a cat cafe acclimates them to hoo-mans, other feline friends, and a stress-free atmosphere! Upon entering the room, you'll quickly find that it's a pretty good life for the cats -- there are houses, hammocks, toys, jazz music, and food for them all. When we got there, most of the cats were sleeping, but there was one feisty tabby that wanted to play. Pretty soon, others were awake and walking around. It was a very calming space and just being there felt therapeutic... As much as I wanted to pet them, a few cats are weary of people and take a long time to gain their trust. The staff are incredibly friendly and they have a great facility for the cats. The cats are clearly very well take care of and their safety and well being is prioritized. Cat Town is a delightful adoption center that has taken on a different way to introduce to their cats to you and let you get acquainted. What you can do is give them a call and make an appointment for an hour visit. What's great is they also have a cafe when you walk into the main entrance with treats for both you and the cats. The staff there are very friendly and you can tell they really care about their cats. You can play with them, pet them, ask questions and even if you're not interested in adoption, you can still go and visit just to spend time and socialize with them. The setup is pretty cute with lots of props to make it look like a small town with houses, buildings and even a taco truck. read more

What a fabulous place, and much needed community resource. Great nonprofit to find kitties a good, forever home. Loved the checklist at the door explaining how to best interact with the cats (Hint: if you have been lucky enough to have been owned by a cat, you already know the basics like letting sleeping cats alone and letting the cats come to you... Love and attention on their own terms :-) Had to wait a few minutes to get in because the number of visitors in the cat room is limited (again, thinking of kitty comfort), but didn't mind since you can get a snack/hot-cold beverage while you wait. Layout and design make the most of the space and even if you don't go inside there are great big windows in which you can see the kitties inside and all the cool modern cat furnishings. Clearly designed considering the comfort and happiness of the cats - kudos! Cafe staff as well as volunteers in the cat room were friendly and courteous, even at the very end of their shift after a long and busy day. Only thing to make it better would be more seating outside the cat room... Chairs outside next to windows? Based on this first visit, I would highly recommend checking it out...
