I was referred to this place by another cat place in San Jose. I set my reservation online and for 2 adults and 1 child it was $36 for an hour. I thought that was a pretty reasonable price for a lot of fun. We found street parking it's in an area where it's not busy. You walk in and it's a little cafe you check in there. If you did not set a reservation you can buy a drink and just see the cats they have a large window. It was pretty cool inside. Great pictures and you get to play with tons of cats. The woman who worked there was very friendly and helpful. There was another room that was a quiet area where the cats are sleeping. There was another area in the back with separate little room with cats in each room . You get more one on one time with the cats and get to know them. My kids really enjoyed coming here. This is such a cute place to come for an hour and play with cats. One thing that stood out to me was how sunny this space got. It has large floor to ceiling windows in the main room giving ample light and ideal for essential sun naps. The custom-made cat buildings in the main room are so cute and creative. It gives the place a lot of flair and If I was a cat I'd love to hang out in there and sleep or play. In addition to the main room there's another room area with small cubicle rooms where you can visit with certain cats individually. It's all very organized and color coded as to which cats can have visitors because some are not ready. I thought there were a good number of volunteers and employees always around monitoring the space and available to answer questions. Visited for the first time and loved it! It is recommended to make an RSVP online if you want to visit the cats for playing, but no need to for the cafe. I opted to do a visit and definitely enjoyed my time there. The staff are super helpful and talking you through any important information you may need to interact with the cats. The first main room is a play room and then in the back area there are kittens and a few cats who need more cautious care/interactions. It was clear from the moment we walked in that the people at Cat Town take their responsibility to care for and home cats seriously. They were all kind, knowledgeable about cat behavior, and sensitive to the individual needs of their furry charges. My daughter asked to go to a cat cafe for her 10th bday so CatTown it is. Volunteers was super friendly, cafe workers was too, but the cafe need to have more drink options to be called a cafe, they literally only had drip Coffee and canned drinks and at 4pm out of drip coffee. I went to meet the cats today because I've been really distressed lately, and I thought meeting and socializing with some feline sweethearts would help. It really did help. I also wanted to foster for literally years, and I was given a card. I also asked plenty of question, and the staff patiently answered every single one of my questions. Went today as a bday treat. I was alone adult with a group of cute kids, but I tried to flow with it. The cool part was that they have different vibes for different spaces, and could put me in a chiller space, to bond with the kitties. Came here with friends to visit some cats. Super easy to make a reservation online ahead of time! The workers/volunteers were kind and instructive. I've been to a cat cafe before but I think I enjoyed my experience here more--the studio, where you could do private "meet n greets" with the cats, was great for meeting and socializing with the kitties one on one. Of course, there's no predicting how the cats will feel at the time of your appointment, so every experience will vary (plus, there will be different cats all the time, as it also works as an adoption center!) but I think we interacted with a good roster of feline friends. Went with 3 friends and we all left feeling bubbly after our cat therapy. The cats seemed well taken care of and happy. Had rules that made sure the cats were not going to be harassed/ stressed by customers and so they can feel comfortable as this place was created first and foremost for cats, not humans. The kittens were ADORABLE (had 6 at the time of visit). Volunteers were nice, knowledgeable and clearly loved the cats. The mocha needed more sugar (but you can add it yourself), but the chai latte was delicious. The gift shop portion of the cafe had fun and quirky cat-themed items. Overall love the concept and execution. Made me really want to adopt Marnie, the gray cat in the studio that loves being a sweet lapcat. Definitely made my day better and hopefully we made the cats feel loved. Loved that it was only $10, fully non-profit (vs KitTea in SF which is for profit and much more expensive), and the cafe was reasonably priced. Tip: go during the mornings or evenings for more active cats. We went at 3pm which was when most of them were asleep. BUT had plenty of cats, so at least a few were awake. What are you waiting for? My fiancé and I went in to check out cats to possibly adopt in the future and we left adopting 2 cats. This place is a dream and has a team of people who truly love and care for these cats. We were given detailed information on how to care for them due to their past situation. Because of their amazing advice, our kitties are thriving! We adopted Hazel (now Basil) and Dali. Basil won our hearts by coming up to us for pets. Dali was very shy but super sweet so we could not say no. After weeks of hiding under the entertainment center then moving to the our stools tucked onto the counter, they are now huge couch potatoes. Dali surprised us most by becoming the biggest lap cat! Cat Town is the nation's first cat cafe and I can definitely tell! It's probably the largest one I've been too. There are three types of area, the main area that has all Oakland themed landmarks for the cat trees, and kitty area, and another area where other cats stay in rooms. You can go into these smaller rooms to play with these cats. There are so many cats and kitties, and they're very cute. For $10 an hour, you really can't beat it. I had visited this Cat Town location right when they first opened a few years ago. What had been intended to be a cat-loving girls date wound up becoming an adoption for one of us, me! Our visit to Cat Town was quick and easy. We made an reservation for our girls date on their website and paid the donation fee for each visitor. When we arrived, we were greeted by two of their staff, each super welcoming and friendly. They briefed us on rules of conduct (like how to treat the cats, what to do with our coffee & snacks etc), took our coffee order and we were on our way to hang out with the kittehs! The kitty room was so fun and well decorated. The walls were covered in cat-themed murals featuring famous cats with some Oakland flair and there were cat trees and beds throughout the area. We played with the cats and got to see where the resident fosters were staying. This was a very well maintained facility and you can tell the cats were happy staying here. There was one kitty that took a liking to me, so much in fact I decided to take him home! I had to fill out an application form and make an appointment with them to come back to pick up the kitty. There was an adoption fee, which for my cat at the time was $50. The process was seamless and I felt supported by Cat Town I had not had a cat in over a decade. The staff is passionate about what they do so whether or not you bring a cat home, you leave feeling happy you had come and experienced this cool place! I try to visit a cat cafe at every new city I visit (if they have one), so of course I had to visit the first cat cafe in the U.S, Cat Town, while in Oakland! This place is lovely. Make an appointment online ahead of time, $10 for a one hour slot. We arrived 15 minutes early as instructed and checked in, then snacked on a few goodies in the cafe part of the building before our time to enter the cat play area. Before entering a volunteer will come out and explain the rules and usher everyone in. The play area is spacious and has a ton of different structures for the cat to play and relax in. Most of the cats were in a separate little room relaxing, but the volunteers showed us in to them and told us about all of their personalities. If you're not a "cat person," please keep in mind when you visit that the cats are not there for entertainment. The cafe essentially functions as a shelter where you can interact with the cats, but remember that their welfare is the top priority, so don't be disappointed if most of them are just lounging around and not running and playing. They are cats, after all! I can tell that the staff and volunteers at Cat Town really love these animals and give them the best care before they find their forever homes. Grateful for the advanced medical treatments available and offered at great expense to cats who need it. Hibiscus will enjoy a more comfortable life because of it. She was very fortunate to have had trained staff who devoted days and months to help her through her fears and stress levels of a homeless cat. My first time at Cat Town, and it was a most enjoyable experience. We had a 10am appointment on a Sunday, so it was a perfect time. Free parking right out front, no traffic, no crowds, and best of all the cats were awake! We spent our 50 minutes playing with the cats with wand toys, and give an occasional scratch. These cats are a little more leery of human attention, and the goal is to get them acclimated for adoption. Cat Town does great work in that department, as we saw first hand cats coming out of their shells. The volunteers were all friendly, kind and patient. They were able to give information on each cat and impart their knowledge of cat care. Cat Town is a wonderful place to visit, and $10 is a reasonable amount to spend for the experience. read more

We visited Cat Town while vacationing in the San Francisco / Oakland area from Canada, where we volunteer for the MEOW Foundation, a no kill cat rescue in Calgary, Alberta. Cat Town is exactly what the title infers, lots of cats and lots of time to spend with cats. It was great to be able to interact with the cats in a safe and friendly setting. The cat condos and cat furniture are pretty cool and you never know where you will find a cat hanging out... This organization does a wonderful thing for these cats and with the chance to play with and pet these cats allows anyone interested in adopting to get close to the potential next member of their family. We had a good time visiting Cat Town. We reserved a time easily online. We arrived a few minutes early and got coffee in the adjacent Rawr Cafe. They give a short briefing on procedures. There are two rooms with lots of cats. The big room has lots of places for cats to climb and to play. Some cats want to play. Some want to watch and some want to sleep. The other room is smaller with glassed in I'll call them cat closets where people can go in to interact with some of the cats. These rooms have tags to indicate whether cats are ready to interact with people or not. The staff are very helpful and obviously care about each cat. It's a great place for cats to recover from prior difficulties and for people to get quality cat time. read more

I didn't expect to have to pay to enter ($10/person) but they later explained that it is needed to take care of cats and to basically not have them killed :O We waited 30 minutes to enter so in the meantime we got a banana bread from the Rawr Cafe right next to it. When we were finally able to go in, I was pretty excited! But most cats were asleep... and I'm like really?? $20 for this wasn't worth it. The volunteer even said that most cats wake up at the time we came (5pm). I feel like for at least 30 minutes we were kind of just sitting and starring at cats sleep. Disappointed at our first visit. Also, we parked 2 blocks away from the place and my car was later broken into. Although this didn't affect my review for this place, I don't think I will be coming back to this cat cafe. read more

This place was really therapeutic my girlfriend and I recently lost our cat in a very tragic manner so being able to come here and play with cats was amazing. Cat Town is in a really convenient part of town and there was plenty of street parking. We booked the 11:00am-12:00pm. The coffee shop was really cool and the coffee was tasty. We loved the cat space which is divided into three sections. The front space which is essentially the store front there is plenty of places for the cats to hide and there is toys scattered through out so you can interact with them. Then there is a quiet space where you can watch the cats but not bother them. Lastly are the cat studios which has cats inclosed in there own little area. These were cool because you can go into these rooms. The staff here were incredibly nice and extremely helpful they definitely know there cats! I am so surprised people are complaining about paying the 10.00 to come in and see the cats. Geez that money goes to keeping these programs alive and these cats alive. read more

Theres different colored tags for each room depending on the cats demeanor. So you will know which ones are friendly and which ones are still very skittish. You really get to know the cats during your visit so if you're looking to adopt, this is a great way to find the perfect cat. now for the boring stuff, street parking with meters. credit cards accepted. they sell raw food for cats if you feed your kitty a raw diet. Sometimes life can be stressful and hard. You need time to unwind and relax away from the cares of your day to day life. What better way to unwind than to have a cup of coffee while surrounded by adorable cats? I've been to Cat Town Cafe many times. The cats are very entertaining, and the space is relaxing. Most importantly, the staff are all very well attuned to the needs and particulars of each cat. Last year we visited and one of the cats stole our hearts with his lazy and carefree demeanor. "Romero" has FIV and was recovering from being beaten up by another cat when he came to Cat Town. We were not looking to adopt a cat that day, but a couple months later we visited again. It turns out he was still available, and we decided to adopt him. The process went very smoothly. The staff took the time to ensure we understood the ramifications of adopting a cat with FIV and answered all our questions thoroughly. Totally understand that America probably has more regulations when it comes to animals but staff can be a little nicer here. The coffee staff are cool but it's the cat lady inside that scares me. I came here with my friend to check out the cats because I love animals and she loves cats. We were told not to pet the cats when they are sleeping but a cat woke up for a minute and I went to pet it, only to have it go back to sleep. I got yelled at by one of the ladies there. She was rude and muttered stuff. She made it super hostile for me. I ended up just sitting in a chair in the back of the room to just watch the cats because they were all sleeping and I didn't wanna deal with that lady who literally watches you like a hawk. We didn't even stay for the whole hour, we left like 30 mins in because we basically couldn't pet or play with any of the cats & didn't wanna deal with the lady. read more

What a fun place to visit! They focus on cats that aren't adoptable, and try to socialize and treat them so that they can be adopted. By donating and visiting you are helping their rehabilitation. Staff were very friendly and kindly make sure children follow the rules, like cleaning hands between touching cats and not messing with sleeping kitties. Also no picking them up. You can bring in snacks and drinks that you purchased at the café. Reservation is required, I'm guessing because this helps keep the number of people reasonable. The cats were very active at 10 AM, and the kittens were a blast. There are cute T-shirts and cat supplies in the lobby. This is a great place to visit. read more

This is my first cat café experience but sad to say the least, I didn't find it worthwhile. My friend and I came here on a late Saturday Morning. She ordered a Mocha which was mediocre and off we went to play with the cats. In the large room, the cats were sleepy. But in the smaller ones, sort of like really clean kennels, they were very lively and awake. I had a good time there, but if I wanted to play with cats in tiny rooms, I could have gone to the shelter. I wanted an experience where I would be in a room with a lot of cats, having a good time. One of the workers who were leading my group said our time was up with kittens, and while I was trying to let the kittens go, heavily reprimanded me, saying that other people were waiting their turn. She later apologized but that experience and her tone really turned me off. We were in and out in 30 minutes so it didn't take long at all and not worth the payment. The silver lining would be their mission. Of having adoptable cats there. The website is very nicely designed as well. I don't think this experience was for me, but I think others could have a good time. read more
