I came to Catalina Island for a day trip and ended up deciding to stay overnight at the Catalina Island Inn in Avalon. The hotel has a nice vintage feel to it, which fits perfectly with the atmosphere of Catalina Island. It's a historic Victorian-style hotel located right in the heart of Avalon, making it convenient for walking around and enjoying the area. The hotel was clean, and the staff was friendly and provided good customer service. My biggest downside was the price. The rooms are a little on the smaller side for what you're paying, so I felt it was a bit pricey. Check-in is also around 4:00 PM, which can be a little inconvenient, especially if you arrive on the island earlier in the day. Other than that, I enjoyed my stay. It was clean, comfortable, conveniently located, and had plenty of character. My husband and I both work in the hotel industry, so we understand that mistakes can happen. However, what we uncovered after our four-night stay at Catalina Island Inn was absolutely horrifying. After removing the bedding, we discovered what appeared to be a large blood stain on the mattress that had clearly been covered up rather than properly addressed or the mattress replaced. This was not a small spot or minor issue -- this was human contamination hidden beneath the sheets where guests were expected to sleep. While the hotel did refund our entire stay, there truly was no other acceptable resolution given the severity of the situation. Refunding us does not erase how disturbing and unsanitary this experience was. As hospitality professionals ourselves, we know the standards that should be followed regarding guest safety, cleanliness, and biohazard protocols, which is exactly why this was so shocking to us. This was not simply an oversight in housekeeping -- it reflects a serious failure in hotel sanitation and management procedures. Guests should never have to question whether their sleeping environment has been properly cleaned and sanitized. We had a great stay last week! Abby at the front desk was pleasant and so helpful. We were able to leave our bags before our room was ready so we could explore and eat. After checkout, we left them again so we could enjoy the day exploring and relaxing on the beach. We had the king bed with patio room and thought the decor and furnishings were tastefully done. It was on the first floor so very easy with no stairs. There was no view but since it was only a one night stay, we figured we weren't there long enough to be able to enjoy that option. The location was great since it was near the main front street without being on it, which made it quieter. read more

The hotels in Catalina are very expensive so the Catalina Island Inn is a fairly good price compared to other options nearby. The location is excellent and is definitely one of the biggest pluses. My room was in the front of the building on the street side and it was extremely noisy. The golf carts pass through non-stop on the road and I was even hearing it throughout the night. Room was basic but cozy. Be prepared to walk up a lot of steps with your luggage if you are on the second or third floor. Definitely an old building with outdated features. And it's missing some helpful amenities, like a place to fill up water bottles, or a nightstand next to the bed, or a staff member outside of the hours of 9-9. I like the balcony on the second floor, really nice spot. If you are looking for a budget friendly place in a great location, then it's a good option. read more

We stayed in this hotel for one night after camping in Whites Landing and all I really needed was a hot shower and a good night sleep, didn't expect anything fancy. They changed my room without my consent , so I don't even know whether it was an upgrade or a downgrade. The room came with non working TV, non working AC, and they assured me I had a coffee maker but I guess it was hiding somewhere. The worst thing is at 1:30 am the smoke detector alarm started beeping and it was unbearable. I walked to the front desk and she brought a technician, they spoke Spanish to each other but from what I understood they didn't know how to reset it or make it stop beeping. They said they would be back with a new battery and they came back in about 15 minutes, replaced the battery and left. It was quiet for about 20 minutes, and then the beeping came back. I didn't go back to the front desk as it was clear that they had no idea what to do and another room was not offered... so I stayed up all night and when I asked for a refund in the morning there was a new front desk clerk and he didn't apologize for this horrible night and said he can only refund half of what I paid. I'm going to pursue with their upper management but just the lack of acknowledging is striking. Service here was very nice. Each person that had staffed at the front was welcoming and attentive. We got to the island around 11 and they held our bags for us until check in and after check out the next day until our boat back. Check in was suppose to be at 4 but they called me at 1:30 saying the room was ready and we got an early check in which was super nice. We stayed in the Ocean View Room. The room was clean when we walked in and the view was so pretty. The place was a little bit old but was walking distance to everything. Tv had poor connection and cut out a few times but worked for well for the rest of the time. I would definitely recommend this place and stay here again. 5/5 hotel for the price was we paid. read more

Just overall old and dirty. The carpet clearly hasn't been cleaned thoroughly in years, mold in the shower and the railing for the balcony was broken. For over $400/night, I really wish that this hotel room was better! The sliding door for the bathroom would not lock so it would always slide open which was really uncomfortable. We were 4 people staying in a room with 2 beds and it felt very small with only 2 open outlets to use. I'm glad that there was a bathroom downstairs, but there's no ventilation in it. It's a clean, reliable hotel in a good location, just a block from the beach. It's a quiet spot and the walls are thick. The carpet in our room was extremely old and needs to be replaced. The rooms have decent mini-fridges. Our room with two queen beds was one of the smaller hotel rooms of my existence, I think. The shower was so small, you couldn't rinse your whole body without spraying water all over the floor outside the shower space at the same time. That shower was not good. For some insane reason, the tiny bathroom had a sliding barn door instead of a normal door. It neither closed nor locked. I mean, that's not ideal. The staff was great. You can leave your luggage behind the front desk hours before and after check-in and check-out. That is awesome. Avalon hotels are simply very expensive. There's no way around it. We recently stayed here, they were able to provide us a slightly earlier check in which was nice, the partial ocean view we paid for was nice, and the bed was comfortable although the pillows need updating. The negatives to this place which would probably deter me from staying here again are that the bathroom amenities were not very nice and the soap felt chalky, our room door wouldn't close unless you forcefully closed it, the bed was stained with either sweat or urine (probably need new mattresses as someone else posted blood stains), and the cost for this place compared to others in the area that we walked through was over priced. I truly believe our room at $75 less per night would fit what we got. read more

My aunt asked for a ground floor room. However, when she asked, no one mentioned to her that there was a flight of stairs to the rooms that had two beds, for 3 people to sleep. I listened to the whole conversation and the reservation person assured her that the room was on the ground floor. When we got here, the woman at the front desk, was extremely non chalent about the fact that we had to go up stairs. My mom and aunt are over 80 yrs old. It's pretty upsetting to see them be taken advantage of by the reservation agent and then upon finding out, when we get here, there was nothing we could do. The front desk person was defensive and said she didn't make the reservation and so this wasn't her fault. I understand that. But at least some empathy, and possible saying she would let the owners know, would have been nice. She did however, carry our luggage up the stairs. But it still felt like she didn't care. The room is VERY small. We could not open the window to get fresh air. I didn't even shower because the shower stall looked claustrophobic to me. The only good thing is it is close to all the restaurants and shopping. We would not ever book a hotel room here again. The front desk leaves at 9 pm. No one was there to help us, when the power went out and this loud noise went off in our room. That woke us up. It would have been nice to have known that, when we checked in, that no one is there overnight and that the power on the island shuts off, often. read more

So I was a bit nervous to book here, but it was great! The room was clean, the decor was nice, and it was in the middle of the town! Traveling solo on a last-minute getaway, I found a great room rate online and booked. Keep in mind it was Monday-Wednesday, end of January, start of February. I traveled to Catalina with an idea; burn some vacation time (I maxed out my accrual) and ride my bike. Success! Now back to my review... I arrived in Catalina around ~11ish on a Monday in January. Wanting to change and drop some gear so I could get to riding my bike, I stopped by the hotel. They checked me in - thank you! Yes, I was able to get in to my room early and leave my belongings safely behind as well as sort my biking gear and head out feeling well-prepared. Side note: I booked a small bunk bed room since I was traveling by myself. It seemed prudent and turned out excellent! Funny, I had bunk beds growing up and later, had them for my kids. It lent a coziness to my trip and was awesome. Anyhow, the room was clean, nicely decorated and comfortable. Front desk was friendly. Location, yes - perfect! Oh, and they let me keep my bike in the room with me - I greatly appreciated that! Do not stay in room 201 That's the room we stayed in and its was miserable. Its located at the top of very old, creaky stairs so we were woken up several times during the night and early morning to the sound of people stomping up and down the stairs. This hotel does not have an elevator and is 4 stories, so everyone pass by using these stairs. Also, there are no workers on site at night or early morning. After a long sleepless night we got woken up again at 6am by street cleaners using leaf blowers in front of the hotel. It would have been nice if a guest services person was around to intervene and remind the leaf blowers that the people on vacation would probably like to sleep in. read more

Catalina Island Inn is a great location. Dawn was so nice at check in. She offered to store our luggage until our room was ready. She gave us information about the hotel and our keys. Dawn gets 5 stars! My review is based on the condition of the hotel. I know the buildings are older in Avalon, but the condition of the room was disappointing. We reserved a King Ocean View. Our room was on the 4th floor, and there is not an elevator. We don't mind at all, but it was definitely worth mentioning in case someone has physical limitations. It was not great carrying our luggage up, but other than that we welcome the extra steps. There isn't a lobby area at this hotel, but on the 2nd floor there is a lovely little patio area with a waterfall that seems to be a common area. The room, furniture and paint feels tired. It would be great to add a bed skirt, or cover to the exposed box springs. The kind size bed had 4 small kinda flat pillows. I appreciated the bedding was a duvet style with a fresh cover for every guest. The mattress comfort is only okay. I only included photos of the condition of the bed and exposed box spring, it set a feel for the rest of the room, and I also included our view of the ocean so you could decide if it's worth the stairs. We could hear live music from the Metropole shopping area at night. We enjoyed this and left our sliding door open for part of the night. We could still hear the music with it closed, so if you are sensitive to noise, bring ear plugs. We personally liked the vibrancy of the town noise. Catalina Coffee is right next door. Again, great location, nice staff, just the actual room was the disappointing part. I should mention the room has a mini fridge which is a nice tough, and a Keurig, but no water to use it. Bottled water would be a nice touch, even for a fee. There is an ice bucket and an ice maker on the 2nd floor. I came back to add the top floor has a musty smell, and when we first checked in, our room was definitely clean. We made a last-minute decision to visit Catalina Island for the first time, and wanted to stay close to where the ferry is. From the ferry terminal, the walk is about 15-20 minutes to the hotel. We were greeted by the front desk staff. Check in was easy and we proceeded to walk up the stairs to our room. As our booking was last minute, the only room available for our party of three adults was a small room with bunk beds. Our adult son slept at the top and my husband and I slept in the bottom bunk. The room is a little tight, but since we figure we'll be spending most of the time out, we managed. Room is clean, modern decor, complimentary shampoo, soaps, etc. There's a window you can open to let the breeze in. The bathroom is cramped a bit with a barn door for privacy. The shower is 3'x3', just enough room, and it is nice and recently remodeled. I suggest with the bunk beds, the room is best for only two adults; one in each bed. Two adults in one bunk is uncomfortable. There are light sconces on the wall by each bed and you can't help but hit them while trying to get comfortable! Check out was easy, and front desk was kind enough to hold our luggage behind the desk until it was time for us to get them to catch the ferry to return home. All in all, we liked our stay at this hotel and will definitely keep this on the list next time we visit Catalina.... But stay in a bigger room. read more

Our room was #333 , we had a balcony with ocean view. Room was clean, bed comfy,air conditioning cold. No elevator was difficult due to health problems. But the front desk clerk Lola made 2 trips to carry our bags up. She was an angel. We had a couple small issues that were immediately taken care of. All of the staff , housekeeping included are so nice and so helpful. It's in a prime location a block from the beach. The hallways are a bit dusty and outdated but the room was amazing and the staff was outstanding. We don't need a fancy hallway.We spent 3 nights here and I have no complaints at all. Its poop and view was of adjacent apartment windows and rooftop. When we checked in we were told that our toilet did not flush. PROS: -HUGE ROOM! Room 104 was clean, modern, and spacious. -Lovely patio with a bamboo background, lounge chairs, and table -The King bed was heavenly to sleep in...I think I need a new mattress for home! -Large (50 inch?) LCD TV -Bathroom has two sinks -Pub height dining table and stools -Coffee Machine -Mini-Fridge -Friendly service from everyone -Beach towels were always available -Walking distance to almost everything CONS: -The room initially lightly smelled of weed. The staff offered to clean the room again, but we didn't want any potential asymptomatic Covid carriers in our room again. We left the patio door open for a few hours, which got rid of most of the smell. -Due to Covid, they won't hold your luggage upon checkout. I found that strange, but I guess I could be an asymptomatic Covid carrier so they don't want to touch my dirty luggage. FYI for $5 you can store your small roller at the boat terminal. read more

My SO and I arrived at 4pm to check in on Dec 29 2023 and had to wait over 40 minutes for someone to arrive to the front desk. The phone number to the hotel rang and rang and no one answered. After a gal finally arrived, we went to our room to drop off our things and noticed that there was not any soap in the room (#223 king suite) and the trash was full. We tried to phone the front desk but the phone was not working, as we checked to see if it was plugged in correctly, we found that the phone wire was deliberately cut with scissors. I called the front desk via cell phone to notify her about the phone issue and she reassured us that maintenance would be over in 15 minutes or so to check out the problem. The maintenance guy that arrived didn't speak much of anything and took the phone with him replaced the phone but the second phone did not work too. We left to eat dinner and when we came back after a couple of hours we decided to turn down the bed and relax, as we did this we saw several ants and spiders under the blanket alive and well and I called the front desk immediately on my cell to bring this awareness to Jennifer at the front desk. Jennifer at the front desk responded that we could be moved rooms, which we did (#222 king suite) - it was a similar king suite we had right next door. We checked the room carefully making sure there was not a repeat of bug sightings in the bed and around the area. Though, when we opened the bathroom door, there was a large and alive cockroach crawling on the door. I was in absolute disbelief that there was yet another bug sighting in what I was told was a somewhat nice hotel to stay for the weekend. We phoned the front desk again and this time came down to talk with them. At this time, another room was available at the lower level 102 and the front desk gal, Jennifer assured us that there was nothing wrong with the room and we would be getting an upgrade even from the suite we originally had. After paying close and careful attention to the surroundings and checking everything we were highly disturbed to find black mold from the upper vent and were also very disturbed by the last two rooms to instill any other confidence in this hotel accommodation. At this time, it was about 8:40pm, we called other hotels to see if they had vacancy but the phone lines went straight to voicemail. We knew if we walked over to the next street over, we would have a better chance to speak with someone. So then, we asked Jennifer if we could leave our luggage in the room for now as we run over to a nearby hotel to ask if there is vacancy for 2 nights. Jennifer responded with attitude saying she was going to be off in 20 minutes and will leave exactly at 9 pm. We knew we had to be quick and back in time before 9pm, so we went across the way to Hotel Atwater and booked a stay for 2 nights quickly. We returned back to the Inn and made sure that we were back before 9pm so Jennifer could process a full refund for the unlivable conditions that the Inn provided as we were not willing to pay over 600 for the poor quality and lack of cleanliness that was provided. We made sure to get a documented receipt of the full refund on paper. I checked my bank account and I was given the refund of $646.34 on Dec 29, 2023. However there are two other charges that are in a new pending queue of charges $314.64 and $331.70 that were not approved by myself that are from the Catalina Island Inn. Do NOT come here! read more

The website does not divulge, but there is no elevator to get to the fourth floor. Therefore, guests are required to drag luggage up multiple flights of stairs. Just not OK. We get to the room in the channel changer suddenly doesn't work. The hotel tried resolve. However, this device still does not work. When I pulled down the bedding there was blood heavy blood on the comforter. The front desk person replaced it immediately but it messed with my brain. This hotel was a complete disappointment. First, the rate was around $650/ night so I was expecting it to be somewhat nice like similar priced hotels I've stay at in the past. Unfortunately the hotel was like a gross cheap motel. Upon entering, the room had a terrible smell like dirty feet and towels. Everything in the room was tired and gross. The mattresses were visibly stained, there were dirty marks all over the wall, the carpet where it met the bathroom was unraveling with exposed sharp nails poking out, pretty much everything was just gross. Even the hair dryer was falling apart, the buttons didn't work and the electrical parts were exposed which seemed super dangerous. Additionally the customer service was pretty terrible. I had called ahead for a crib for our baby. When we arrived it wasn't in the room, no big deal, but when we called down the desk attendant told us they had no cribs, which wasn't true. After several conversations and me pointing out that a crib was promised at booking he told me he was too busy to get the crib then finally after insisting numerous times we got a crib. We also discovered there was no maid service, which should be included at the $650/night rate. When we asked for new towels I was told they were too busy again yet went down to the lobby and no customers were there and the front desk person was sitting idol. From our experience the quality of the rooms and customer service was the same as staying at a cheap shitty motel at the price of a luxury hotel. So do yourself a favor and never stay here. read more

Overall, the hotel is very nice. Beautiful view, patio to enjoy some fresh air, live music that u can hear from the windows, good decor, small rooms but I knew that upon booking. Kind staff as well. It's when you look closer at things, when you start feeling ...gross. The sheets were covered in stains. I Almost didn't notice because they put an over sheet on the comforter. But it had sooo many stains. I do believe they washed them probably a dozen times but idk... I don't want to sleep on a sheet full of stains. The blow dryer was sticky. My phone fell under the bed, I had to kneel down to grab it and my white jeans were visibly dirty at the knees upon standing. That is not an exaggeration. I didn't even know that was possible. I know I am a bit late writing this review but, I want to start off by saying I had a great time on Catalina, since October is our wedding anniversary month. This was a last min trip to the island as we were not really sure what we were planning to do to celebrate. We check most hotels on the island and all were pretty much booked. In addition there was the Catalina Jazz Festival that weekend (Oct 14, 2023) that seems to add more pressure to find a place to stay. I will say that I was not impressed with the accommodations. I am 6'6" guy and my feet were over the foot of the bed. For a king size bed I felt it was more like a a darn queen. Plus, the $$$$+ we spent for the one night was not worth it and I would consider this price gouging. The room was not only very small but the bathroom was even smaller. I did notice a roach in the bathroom and that was a clear indication that there is pest control issue. I would never advise anyone to stay at this place as it was not a comfortable experience. All was well to begin with , however towards the end of our trip my bank sent me several messages that my card was charged 21 times all morning long with different amounts . They tried to scam me and my family thank God for having a good bank who immediately flagged it and was declining all attempts. I was told to go back to the hotel and was told they accidentally gave me 500$ and that I need to authorize for them to charge me more money . What a joke . The chase representative was on the line saying there was no amount credited to my account by them and in fact they attempted to charge me all morning and were successful in taking an additional 250$ on top of the 900$ I had paid for 2 nights. She then threatened to call the cops , I would have been happy to talk to them and report the situation however she never called them. I would've had no problem making things right or paying what I needed to pay but the chase representative advised me NOT to. He said this is fraud and he saw no credit to my account. On top of this the way she treated the poor young man in the front that was working hard was horrible. I would not recommend this place to anyone. Quaint country side charm hotel, no elevator but the stairs weren't bad at all. About a 10 minute walk from ferry . Located among restaurants gift shops and coffee shops . View of the mountains on the second floor deck located in front of hotel. Beds were comfortable and had a million pillows which I love. Nice size tv and dresser with lamp and small refrigerator, the unique ceiling fan kept the room nice and cool, it was a ac unit but I didn't adjust it. Small shelf to hold items with a hanger bar to hang clothes. Bathroom on the small side, shower felt like a coat closet . Kinda wish they removed the soap holder it takes up alot of space . I struggled to raise arms or turn , I was poked each time by it . Overall the room was lovely and I was satisfied. read more
