I chose this hotel, because the last time my husband and I went to Catalina, I stayed at another hotel and was not completely satisfied with everything that hotel offered. So, I walked around town by myself and explored all the hotels. I walked into this hotel and was invited to view the rooms by the owner. The minute I saw the rooms, I was in love. I booked this hotel and the Avalon Suite half a year ago. The moment my husband and I got off the boat and walked over to the hotel, the staff was amazing. An attendant saw me going up the stairs with my luggage and ran down to get my heavy luggage and carry it up the stairs for me. Check in was easy breezy. Our room was ready within minutes and we got to go into it at 11am. The Avalon suite was the room all the way down the hall on the left hand side. I believe we are one of the few rooms with an extra large jetted bathtub, the main reason why we chose this particular room at this hotel. I made sure to take photos of all the rooms the minute I walked in so I could write this review complete with photographs of the way we found it. The living room had a fireplace and a tv above the fireplace, a comfortable couch and a sofa. We had two small tables in the room. The room had excellent heating and air conditioning which we controlled at the touch of a button. We of course had a separate bathroom with jetted tub, two sinks, and a nice and large counter top. In the living room, we had another sink with a small refrigerator and two complimentary bottles of water. We had a safe next to the refrigerator which we did not use. The bathroom had a separate small room with just the toilet which we loved because after using the toilet and making a stink, we could turn on the light/ventilator which worked really well at clearing out the smell and close the door. The bedroom was a bit cramped, especially at the foot of the bed in front of the fireplace, but we had a large living room that made up for it. The bed itself was very comfortable and firm, the linens were clean. However, I got really cold on the first night I was there and had to request extra blankets which they promptly brought us. Also, the extra large pillows on the bed were extremely uncomfortable, forcing us to throw it to the side in the middle of the night. I think it's just there for decorative purposes. We found two extra regular pillows in the closet which we made good use of. The room had a small closet with plentiful hangers. There were dresser drawers we made good use of. There were two lamps, one by each side of the bed on top of a dresser with drawers. I loved the space on top of the dresser for me to place my medication and phone and watch chargers. There were plentiful chargers, USB and C type. Although the chargers on my husband's side of the bed wasn't working and I had to charge all of the electronic devices on my side. One thing about the jacuzzi tub. The wall next to it is really thick and we both had a really hard time getting into and out of it. We were both afraid of falling down and had to climb up slowing, stand on top of the little wall area, and climb into the tub and vice versa each time we used it. Other than that, I have no complaints about this hotel. The rooms are only made every third day we stay and we can tell them when is most convenient for them to do that for us. Everything else we need is brought to us by texting them. The hotel had warm Otis Spunkmeyer cookies each evening, though we only ate it one evening because we were out the other evenings. A member of the staff told me to call him so he could place the cookies in our room while we were gone, but I forgot to call each time. Someone came in our room and placed Ghirardelli chocolates with a cold bottle of water for each of us each evening we missed the cookies. Someone even came in one time and made our bed for us which was really sweet. The staff were all so wonderful and warm, making us feel right at home. And when we got tired, we sat in the chairs at the front of the hotel overlooking the beach below while sipping complementary coffee, tea, and lemon infused cold water. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of staying here. read more

Our room was fantastic with a the most comfy king bed, coffee maker, refrigerator. tv and a very clean shower. They left us milk and cookies at night and they had coffee and tea out in the morning. The fish tank is beautiful in the lobby. My favorite part was sitting in the lobby watching all the people below. The hotels location is right in the middle of everything which made it easy to come and go. If we ever end up in Catalina again we will stay here! I visit Catalina (Avalon specifically) fairly often and usually stay above the fray at Zane Grey or Mt Ada. I knew that if I were to ever stay along the "main drag" of Crescent Ave, I would try the Vista. The other lodging choices directly along Crescent Ave are: Edgewater, Mac Rae, Pavilion (closed for renovation), Metropole, Bellanca and Vista's sister property Snug Harbor. Vista is on the 3rd floor of the building that also houses Maggie's Blue Rose, the Brew House and shops on ground level and Steve's Steakhouse on the 2nd floor. There is no elevator. Most of Vista's rooms face a lovely interior courtyard/atrium, but the 2 front suites have terraces that overlook the boardwalk and the bay/harbour. I booked one of these rooms, which can be quite pricey in high season. The suite was fairly large and very well-equipped and maintained. There was a very comfy king bed, a large sitting area with sofa, chair, fireplace and wet bar with fridge, a jacuzzi tub, separate shower and double vanity. The terrace spanned the length of the room with 4 chairs and 2 side tables, separated from the lobby by a curtain. The TV had very limited basic channels plus music; there was a DVD player and library by the front desk. There is A/C if needed. My main concern was noise from the boardwalk. This was a minor issue since I had the windows open for fresh air, and surely it would be more of a concern in high season, on weekends or when cruise ships are docked. I would advise earplugs if you go to bed early. Until recently, the hotel offered a continental breakfast in the lobby. They still offer evening milk and warm (but not homemade) chocolate chip cookies delivered on a tray to your room. There was a coffee machine in the room (no tea). Service was very friendly from Juan and a woman whose name I didn't get. Do note that the desk is not staffed 24 hours, and they share desk duties at Snug Harbor. They contacted me prior to my stay for my ETA and left the 2nd floor door open. They also texted me before and during the stay to follow up. Overall a great stay. Close to the dock. So walking from the dock can take 5-10 minutes. The location is perfect. We had to climb three floors with our luggage but once we got to the top, it was worth every step. The patio view from there is amazing, calming , peaceful and makes you feel like you're in Hawaii or any island vacation. The rooms are quaint, comfortable and clean. The hallway is welcoming and warming. The service is amazing, and they serve hot chocolate chip cookies with milk every evening. Delicious and the aroma makes you feel like home. Absolutely not worth the $450+/ night price. We booked this based on the great reviews we read online and also the fact that they had a room with a king bed and a pullout queen for our four year old. When we went to check in we were informed that it was an extra $50/night per person despite our child's age. I did a check online of the rate of the room with an extra person and it charged $40 instead of $50, so they hiked the rate in person for extra occupancy. The room: First, the room was dated, couch with stains, ripped and stained carpeting, had dusty fixtures, coffee splashes on door, and worn in features. There was a big hole in the flooring right outside our room. Juan was nice but Laila was very impersonal. Was hoping for friendlier staff, especially for the price and the mention of celebrating a milestone birthday but didn't receive that kind of customer service here. When my husband went to take a shower, he saw a huge wad of hair on the shower wall from the previous customers. Disgusting. There was also hair in one of the bathroom drawers. Since it was in the evening, I informed Laila and showed her a picture of the hair and she apologized and said someone could come in the next morning to clean it. The next day someone did come in and brought fresh towels and made our bed but didn't touch the hair in the bathroom. That evening Laila mentioned cookies and milk at 8PM right outside our door. My husband told her we'd be asleep by then. If you have young kids, then you know how hard it can be to get a four year old down. That said, at 8PM Laila knocks on our door multiple times, right next to where our kid is sleeping to inform us of the cookies. SMH. Needless to say, we will not be staying here again and would not recommend to anyone else. Perfect location and view but no privacy. Only a curtain to separate the room next door and the check in desk. We were hanging out on the balcony when someone below started smoking marijuana. The staff quickly snatched back the curtain and accused us of smoking. We don't smoke marijuana!!!! This room with a balcony cost $820 a night. When the locals asked how much it cost, they gasp and told us about a lot of better options at a way cheaper price with a complementary golf cart. We will be doing that next time. read more

Currently day dreaming of Catalina Island and my visit here in late August. After much research I opted to stay one night in Hotel Vista Del Mar when visiting the island for a short 24 hour trip. The location of the hotel is central, making it accessible to countless restaurants and nearby shops. The aesthetic of the hotel is lovely and the rooms are comfortable and clean despite the size. While the hotel is on the smaller side and on a main tourist heavy street there was no issue with noise or privacy. The hotel felt safe and was overall easily accessible despite the lack of an elevator. Staff were friendly and check in and check out was smooth. First off this hotel has NO ELEVATOR and two long flights of steep stairs that you have to carry your bags up, if you can handle that it's a beautiful hotel. I did see that there is no refunds, when you book it you pay, and you have to go or you lose the money. This was one of the only hotels that would take one night booking in Catalina. We had such a great stay here for our anniversary. We opted for one of the two ocean view rooms. The hotel has an amazing view and conveniently located. It was refreshing to wake up and sit on the balcony and enjoy the fresh bread and fruit they bring to you then the fresh cookies at night were awesome. Nice clean room with big jacuzzi tub. A gas fireplace for those cold nights. Comfy bed. It was very quiet except at night but it wasn't bad at all. The gentlemen that was working the desk was amazing. He took care of all our needs and even helped us take our bags to our golf cart. I can't say enough good things about him. We had a fabulous weekend at this hotel. We stayed in the ocean view suite. The view is amazing, the room is beautiful and the service is impeccable. John checked us in and was so gracious. The women that brought up breakfast each morning and milk and cookies at night were very friendly. This hotel is central to everything. All restaurants were within a 5 minute walk if not right below. The Avalon casino is about a 10 minute walk (highly recommend taking the tour). The beach and pier are directly in front of the hotel. We enjoyed sitting on our patio in the morning drinking coffee and watching the boats come and go. It was very peaceful. Great stay! We will be back. read more

My boyfriend surprised me with a romantic getaway to Catalina island for my birthday and I am so happy we got to stay at this hotel. Firstly the hotel is beautiful and super close to everything, you could practically walk anywhere and you are right in front of the Ocean, I really liked the ocean view from the lobby, they have a few seats on the balcony where you can enjoy the view of the ocean. My pregnant wife and I were really looking forward to staying at this hotel. However due to unforeseen circumstances, my mother suddenly passed away at only 57 years old, we requested to simply have the dates moved (not a refund). My wife and I had already paid for the stay upfront through the hotels direct website, not a third party. The hotel manager tried to help but informed me that the owners of the property were unwilling to accommodate us and suggested we send a different couple. I would have thought that a death of a parent would maybe constitute some good will and sympathy but apparently the staff and ownership lack empathy. This is a top notch hotel. It's very clean, the location is near the harbor and view is great. They have an atrium with beautiful plants in the common area between the room. It's a nice place to sit and they make it comfortable. The staff is extremely helpful and want to make your vacation special. It's in the heart of all the amazing restaurants and Catalina has the best seafood! Lobsters are huge, calamari, salmon, tuna, ahi...it's all delicious! I had the opportunity to stay here right before Christmas with my husband as a mini honeymoon/Christmas vacation. I would highly recommend this place. It's a fairly small hotel located on the second floor. Their staff is very friendly, especially Alex who went out of his way to accommodate us. They are conveniently located on the beach by the pier. There is a nice aquarium in the lobby area with seating next to the window facing the beach. The rooms are very clean with a romantic fireplace and flat screen TV. There are even blu-ray players in each room and a DVD library in the lobby. The bathroom is spacious and clean. They also serve continental breakfast every morning. They also provide a library of DVDs (relatively newer movies and classics) for free rental. Accommodations: I love the interior design of the room. The creams, browns and modern wood details make it contemporary and clean. There was a fireplace, mini fridge, Keruig coffee maker, and DirectTV in our room. The beds were plush, and they gave us a total of 6 pillows! Bathrooms were very clean and kept. The shower had a seat inside and was very roomy. Location: Hotel Vista Del Mar was located right in the middle of town. Anything you want to do is walking distance and popular restaurants and bars were right downstairs. Staid Y Stayed at Hotel Vista Del Mar the night of August 6th, 2019. I went with my wife and 2 kids a rented an ocean view suite. Room was beautiful. I accidentally left my wedding ring in the desk drawer in the suite. I called the very next day and they told me that they didnt find the ring. So I went back in person to speak to someone in person. Again they just brushed me off and said that they had already spoken to the maids and that if the ring was found they would call me. How can this happen at such a luxurious and expensive hotel. I am sorry but their maids are not to be trusted. Beware if u stay here, dont leave any valuables behind. Received a phone call from hotel management on Sunday, August 11, 2019. They advised that maids had just located my ring on the maid cleaning cart. I just received my ring in the mail today Thursday August 15, 2019. Such a beautiful hotel! Stayed here for one night for a mother/daughter trip and we loved every minute of our stay. The staff were extremely kind and went out of their way to make us comfortable! Specifically a particular attendant (can't remember her name now) but I remember her being Colombian. The room we stayed in was the Courtyard Deluxe and it was spacious, clean and beautiful. When I was booking the room I told them we were celebrating my moms birthday and they had had a bottle of champagne and balloons there to greet us when we checked in. We didn't have the chance to drink the champagne that night but we took the bottle with us. After we had checked out, we were told by the staff that we could still enjoy sitting in their lobby which overlooks the marina. I asked if it was possible for us to drink our champagne while we waited for our ferry, and they offered us a new, chilled bottle - so kind of them to go out of their way to do this! Very disappointed how hotel handles accommodation problems that occur on their end. My boyfriend and I booked a two night stay for my birthday, which I was so happy and excited about until we received a call the next morning letting us know that the property was double booked! The options given to us included either paying MORE money to get the same days at their sister hotel or just spend one of the two nights that we originally booked! Very absurd choices as the issue is from the company's end! There was absolutely no attempt to try to accommodate for their mistake, you don't ask your customers to accommodate you by paying more or reducing their stay, so unprofessional. I came here for my 21st birthday a few years back. Being excited as I was, I boarded the first boat-- 6am-- to the Island not thinking about the fact that I may not be able to get the room that early. I walked up the stairs and sure enough even the hotel doors were closed until 8am. I left my suitcase up there and walked to the beach just to bask in the morning sunshine not allowing anything to ruin my day. Promptly at 8, I glanced back and saw an employee who had been basking in the same sun ascend the stairs. I clopped-- I was wearing boots-- and reached him letting him know I had a reservation. The sweet dear carried my suitcase up the remaining flight and told me to sit and relax as they would be starting the breakfast bar soon. I was in awe at the gorgeous view and almost regretted not getting an ocean view room. I was pleasantly surprised to find that my room was indeed ready so early and I eagerly entered the room to take my first nap. Imagine how shocked I was to find they had placed a bottle of champagne with two flutes and balloons and a birthday card. I poured into both flutes and clinked to myself as I was traveling solo. The room was beautiful. There was a skylight in the bathroom which streamed in light so wonderfully. There is a fireplace and a tv on a swivel affixed above which was nice since I could turn the tv depending on where I was in the room. There's a little coffee station with a Keurig and I obviously had my share. All in all, I can't wait to return here. The hallway to the rooms are decorated with plants which give the place a Caribbean feel. Will I return? Yes I will. Thank you wonderful staff who made my solo birthday amazing. read more

Awesome! For my birthday, I decided that I wanted to go to Catalina. I've never been and I've wanted to go since doing a school project on the island in the 5th grade where they sent me these huge silver coins.. so I had high expectations and the island certainly surpassed them! The island itself is beautiful... especially when you're coming from a place like Los Angeles. It's so picturesque and amazing. The Catalina Express has a port about a 3-5 minute walk away from the island. After reading all the positive reviews on Yelp, I decided on this place. It's sister hotel is the Snug Harbor Inn... but they were all booked on the day, but I was able to get the last room available here. I wouldn't stay anywhere else! We checked in at around 11:30 am. I would say we had to wait about an hour for our room to be ready. They took our luggage though so we could explore the island without having to tote that around (and hold the luggage for the following day too - after check out - which is definitely really nice) The inside is so lovely. It's located on the 3rd Floor right across from the beach. The stairs are a bit narrow but it's charming to be higher up. When you get up there there is an awesome view of the boats docked below and the Casino building. They also have a nice fish tank at the front with some fish and a puffer fish! Ahh! Too cute! Anyway, the unless you get the room with the balcony facing the beach (which I think there is only one), the rest of the rooms are located down a single corridor which is very tropical. It's very breezy in there and adorned with green leaves and tropical plants and all the windows have white plantation style shutters facing out into this corridor. There are also a lot of skylights which give the place a lot of natural light. We had room 114 which is the room at the end on the right hand side. The inside was adorable. It's boutique mixed with bed and breakfast. The inside of the room has a hdtv (they have some complimentary blueray dvds that you can use at the front but there was nothing that we particularly wanted to watch - but it was still nice). There is a gas fireplace which is not only romantic but also provides some warmth and a nice glow at night. (There is also heat in the rooms -which I wasn't sure of... but we kept our room nice and toasty). There is a skylight again in the bathroom and the natural light was nice. We didn't have a room with the jacuzzi tub but there was a nice two person shower, with a little bench. It was also nice and immaculately clean. Also, the bedding was lovely and also clean. I didn't feel worried about sleeping in the bed and it was nice and comfortable as well. Ahhh and I almost forgot! The Great Cookie Caper! At 8 pm, they have warm, fresh baked cookies in the lobby along with some milk. Yum! They were delicious and certainly hit the spot! :) Since it was my birthday, they offer a birthday package. There is a bit of a discount in the room and they take care of the Catalina Express reservations (aside from the birthday person's - these are free and you need to call and reserve them yourself). They also gave us a bottle of martinelli's. I'm pretty sure they give you some sort of champagne or wine if you drink. Then a little gift, which is nice. (which was a baseball type hat) and a couple balloons which I saved as souvenirs. :) The hotel was very awesome and I would highly recommend coming on your birthday. They really offer a lot of incentives to come on that day and it's just an awesome place to check out and I would highly recommend this place to stay! read more

This really is a 4.5 star hotel, but since Yelp doesn't allow that, you get four stars Hotel Vista Del Mar. Upon arriving in Avalon for our honeymoon, we went straight to the hotel to drop our bags off as we had reservations at the Zipline EcoTour (do that btw) about an hour and a half after arriving. They were very accommodating holding our bags for us and getting the room ready early. When the room was ready, they called my phone to let us know. When we checked in, they had a bottle of champagne waiting in the room for us. Quite a nice first impression on our honeymoon. The room was clean, nicely sized and well decorated. The bed was big soft and inviting. The shower stall was HUGE with a large seat. There was a fireplace with a nice flat screen tv over top of it. In the lobby, they have a decent selection of movies that you can borrow (for free!). Word has it they have milk and cookies for free in the evenings but we were out having adult beverages at all the various establishments. The small breakfast snacks were good to get something in your belly before going out for actual breakfast. The thing I liked the most about Hotel Vista Del Mar is right in it's name. It's on the second story and overlooks the small beach, the harbor and most of the main street in Avalon. We sat on the patio each evening with a glass of wine taking in the view. It was pretty great. The one negative about this hotel was the skylight in the bathroom. There wasn't anyway to block out the sun if you wanted to sleep in. I'm picky and not even I could find something wrong with this place. This was just a superb hotel that I will be recommending to anyone who vacations in Avalon. I couldn't have asked for any better. Quickie: + Only a 7-minute walk from Catalina Express drop-off (no taxi needed) + Smack dab in the middle of the boardwalk and right on the water + Grocery store only 2-minute walk around the corner + All activities/tours/rentals just minutes away on foot + Highly, highly, highly recommended --- Location: Best location I could've ever asked for on a vacation in Avalon - hands down. This hotel is planted right in the heart of Avalon's boardwalk. There are restaurants and bars down the street in both directions, a Von's grocery store just 2 minutes around the corner and the mini golf course, parasailing, golf carts rental, and pretty much everything a vacationer would want to do no more than 4 minutes away. We stayed for four days in Avalon and didn't need to rent any mode of transportation - everything was literally a few steps away. Room: There is only one floor of rooms in this hotel and only two suites that actually have an oceanside view. I paid the normal price for a regular non-oceanside suite and was extremely pleased. We stayed at the end of the hall so we rarely heard any noise from the surrounding rooms and guests milling about in the lobby. The deluxe room had a mini bar area with a counter, sink, and stocked fridge; an electric fireplace; large mounted flat screen TV, separate seating area with a chair and mini loveseat, queen-sized bed and bathroom with closet. There was ample amounts of storage for our clothes so we didn't have to live out our suitcases during our weekend. Also - there is a vending machine at the end of the hall for any late night drink cravings. A lot of people recommended to splurge for the big expensive suites but the regular rooms were just perfect and are highly recommended. Service: We arrived at 11 a.m. and checked right in - we didn't have to wait until the 3 p.m. check-in! Everyone we encountered at the hotel was just great. They were really helpful with our questions and food recommendations. The maids take care of the rooms really well... we were out for only an hour or so one afternoon and when we returned, our room was made up! Extras: + Continental breakfast served at 8 a.m. (bagels/cream cheese was my fave) + Warm chocolate chip cookies and milk at 8 p.m. + Diverse DVD collection for free rentals (uploaded a photo) + Free Wi-Fi Note: + No elevator so you have to walk up two flights of stairs from the street + No door to the bathroom so if you try to nap in the daytime, the skylight in the bathroom illuminates the room + The balconies for the oceanside suites are open to the hotel lobby... no privacy on those balconies and you'll see everyone/they'll see you when they arrive read more

The one star does not apply to the hotel. The hotel looks and sounds amazing as others describe it. The one star is for the one person who identified herself as the hotel's general manager. A lady by the name of Kelly. In my opinion, very poorly skilled when it comes to customer service. Rude and discourteous. Doesn't listen. Did not make the slightest effort to assist us with booking a room for a weekend. Quite the contrary. Mrs. Kelly made it seemed like she's bothered by guests and their needs in general. It is my opinion that Mrs. Kelly is in the wrong business. Good luck to those unfortunate enough to have to deal with her. read more

What a great little hotel. The staff is amazing, especially Gustavo at the front desk who went above and beyond for us many times. The rooms are cute and clean, and the location could not be more perfect on the waterfront. The breakfast is great (they even brought us an extra one when my wife was allergic to the first one), ambiance fantastic, and overall experience extremely lovely. The birthday package is also great, they gave us a full size bottle of champagne, a cute Catalina hat, and a bunch of coupons and vouchers for around town. Highly recommend. read more
