The ferries were thankfully running the next day and we caught the 9:50 one. We upgraded to the Commodore Lounge which included drinks and snacks. The hotel picked up or luggage at the ferry and transported it to the hotel to arrive at 12 noon. This was a first for me... S we pulled up I was transfixed by the beautiful shoreline and properties that rose up on cliffs before us. Oliver at the front desk was very accommodating since we had a change of what we wanted as far as beds go. The hotel had 3 floors and we both got the 2nd. And both of us had rooms right next to the stairway's. Our room was the tiniest room I'd ever had in my life we kept bumping into the corners of the bed frame, ouch. We moved things around so we had a place to open our suitcases. The continued noise from the guests upstairs was very, very unpleasant, it sounded like they were walking around in ski boots. My kids had the same issue but not as terrible as ours was. If you stay here be sure to book the 3rd floor!! I'm not kidding here. The housekeeper Claudia was super helpful and so sweet she was able to get me band aids and alcohol because I cut my toe. I made sure to take care of her! We played games down in the lobby at night and found it to be warm and welcoming with at least 5 areas for 5 or 6 to gather. They included 3 bottles of Evian water and 2 mini bottles of Perseco in each room which was a nice touch! I would stay here again but only on the 3rd floor!

Beautiful hotel, clean rooms, friendly staff. I wish we could've stayed more than one day. It's a very small room, but perfect for a short stay on the island. I've seen a lot of reviews about the walls being thin, but I am a light sleeper and had no issues. I really appreciated the birthday drink voucher they provided! And we lucked out with an ocean view! Don't forget to call to get a discount on activities- that was super helpful. Definitely recommend this hotel.

My husband and I stayed here over Memorial Day weekend and it was such a pleasant little getaway. We got a large king room facing the street, which gave us views of some of the businesses and trees. It was clean and enough space for the both of us, as we didn't spend too much time in the room. Our stay included two bottles of free prosecco and a $20 food and beverage credit for a selection of restaurants, which we ended up redeeming at Avalon Grille (great dinner option!). TV had cable and Netflix options, bathroom was spacious and bright with good water pressure in the shower. Bed was really soft and comfortable, and we slept well through the night without hearing disruptive sounds from any of the surrounding rooms or street. Our check-in was seamless and everyone at the front desk was really nice and accommodating. Our ferry arrived early in the morning, so we dropped our luggage off at the hotel, which they stored safely until our room was available. Complimentary cucumber water was also available in the lobby. The hotel itself has undergone a renovation in the last couple of years and the exterior and lobby is very well decorated and charming. I love the fun artwork in the hallways and the women's restroom in the lobby is one of the cleanest and cutest I've seen with playful cat printed wallpaper. The Bistro downstairs was great to grab a quick bite and drinks in the morning. My husband had an iced coffee, I had an iced matcha latte, and we shared the great white shark burrito. Very satisfying. The location was perfectly central and an easy short walk to everything. Pricing was not bad, compared to some of the other hotels that were more expensive and in need of an update. We really enjoyed our stay and we had no issues whatsoever. If you're ever in town, I highly recommend this hotel, as we've already deemed this place as our go-to stay whenever we visit.

Just left today after visiting Catalina for three nights, all staying at Hotel Atwater. It's a recently remodeled and extremely conveniently located hotel in the middle of the tiny city of Avalon. It's a very tiny block away from Avalon Bay and the centerpoint of downtown. It's actually a quite large hotel, larger than it looks from the front so they have a lot of different rooms available. Overall I would say our stay was a really nice experience. The staff was very polite and the air conditioning in the room was pleasantly strong. The bed was comfortable and each day we got free Evian water, which was very convenient. I will say that the rooms are a bit small but for the price and the hotel level, not enough to complain about, I understand that real estate on Catalina is very limited. We also didn't really have a view of anything but we were hardly in the room as is. I would stay at Hotel Atwater again in the future and would suggest it to others as well.

Hotel Atwater is a good size hotel located in the heart of Catalina near the harbor and Casino. The rooms are city small but modern and comfortable. Front desk staff were helpful and the ability to have baggage held before checkin and after checkout was incredibly useful. This is a more expensive hotel so we came here for a birthday. Our booking included a daily $20 credit to the hotel bistro which is a small coffee stand with good coffee and simple breakfast foods open part of the day near the lobby. The hotel and room were clean with nice linen, comfortable bed, great water temperature and pressure, and reliable air conditioning. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and for special occasions will stay again.

The room was fine but if you pick a classic king these are the views. It's not very private. Also you hear your neighbors above very easily.

    Disgusting filthy carpet

I stayed in two Junior Suites at the Atwater Hotel (April 22-23, 2026) and unfortunately the experience didn't match the rate or the description. Both rooms had noticeably dirty carpets, non‑functional coffee makers, and furnishings that didn't feel suite‑level. I reached out to management the same day and received a partial refund, but no apology, no name in the signature, and no personal follow‑up. I never learned who handled my complaint, and no one contacted me to understand the issues. For a premium‑priced room, the lack of cleanliness and communication was disappointing.

Very nice hotel and in the middle of everything Catalina has to offer. Hotel staff was nice , shout out to "LILY". I really liked they did have a fridge in the room. Direct TV on the television so there were a few channels to watch when we were winding down. Stand-up shower so no tub. Loved the complimentary chocolates and Champagne since we were here celebrating an anniversary. I would stay at this hotel again if there are rooms with bathtubs. I really wanted a bath my stay here but no biggie. I really liked the shower heads in the stand up shower. The lobby area was nice too. Very spacious with table charger outlets for your devices . Also the hotel had a nice selection of your classic board games. After checking out , if you need them to hold your luggage or bags so you don't have to haul them around for your last adventure before leaving the island, they got you covered. I would definitely stay here again if I'm visiting the island!

Ask the Community - Hotel Atwater

Are there coffee pots in the rooms? I like to drink warm water in the morning.

Thank you for your inquiry! Hotel Atwater provides coffee pots in the Suites. Otherwise, you may get warm water directly downstairs at our Bistro at the Atwater. Enjoy!

    How much / a day?

Too much! Over $300/night for crap suites during Winter! What a joke.

    Do they accept AMEX?

    Yes

    Are they still doing breakfast?

NOPE. You get $20 per night vouchers for HORRENDOUSLY microwaved 7-11 style "food" there i. The building at some dump called The Bistro.. Save your vouchers for the actual restaurants.

Is there a specific site to book a room directly in order to get the $40 credit, champagne, and free bike rentals/glass boat tour?

Its NOT $40 cred, ts $20 food voucher per night booked. NO free activities. Will never stay here again....horrible experience for $$$ stay.. its an over priced Motel 6. Can I get a witness??

Last year, Vista and Snug were under the same ownership, which is no longer the case. Snug now has closer affiliation with Hotel Aurora a bit up the hill. Snug is a cozy and charming 6-room inn. There is staff on duty during the day; welcome in-room wine and snacks are provided as well as daily continental breakfast. There is no staff on the premises at night, although someone is on-call. My stay was lovely and somewhat surreal. I visited during the February rains which caused the cancellation of all Catalina Express boats on 2 days during my Avalon visit. This forced guests here for the long Valentines/Presidents Day weekend to leave early or relocate. I ended up being the sole guest for my 2-night visit! And with minimal visitors on the island, evenings were also pretty quiet, despite being right above the main drag (Crescent). Snug does provide earplugs and eye masks if needed. I moved up my arrival date due to the weather and Snug was able to accommodate me, even offering the same room, which was the Santa Catalina room, the inn's "crown jewel" situated on the corner with two large bay windows, one facing Avalon Bay with Casino, Bay and pier views, the other with a built-in window seat facing Sumner and the hills above. All rooms have a fireplace and deep soaking jetted tub. The rooms are not particularly large but are full of charm, coziness and warmth. No robes or slippers, but there were 2 clock/music/alarm machines. Complimentary reusable water bottles are provided; there's a water/ice machine in the hall. The welcome snacks offered were olives, pretzels and high-end nuts (i.e., no peanuts). The continental breakfast was quite ample and includes a small loaf of warm banana bread, yogurt, fresh berries, granola, milk, juice and coffee or tea. You fill out an order slip as to what you want exactly and what time you want it delivered. There are 6 delivery times for the 6 rooms, which of course was not an issue for my stay. There is a common room with a sofa, fireplace and machine for coffee and tea. There is a closet for luggage storage, a public restroom and umbrellas. The front door is open 8-5, key access is needed in the off-hours. Shout-outs to the great staff I met--Jackie, Destiny and especially Johnny at the front desk and housekeeper/breakfast preparer Alicia. Overall a fabulous stay. So, I walked around town by myself and explored all the hotels. I walked into this hotel and was invited to view the rooms by the owner. The minute I saw the rooms, I was in love. I booked this hotel and the Avalon Suite half a year ago. The moment my husband and I got off the boat and walked over to the hotel, the staff was amazing. An attendant saw me going up the stairs with my luggage and ran down to get my heavy luggage and carry it up the stairs for me. Check in was easy breezy. Our room was ready within minutes and we got to go into it at 11am. The Avalon suite was the room all the way down the hall on the left hand side. I believe we are one of the few rooms with an extra large jetted bathtub, the main reason why we chose this particular room at this hotel. I made sure to take photos of all the rooms the minute I walked in so I could write this review complete with photographs of the way we found it. The living room had a fireplace and a tv above the fireplace, a comfortable couch and a sofa. We had two small tables in the room. The room had excellent heating and air conditioning which we controlled at the touch of a button. We of course had a separate bathroom with jetted tub, two sinks, and a nice and large counter top. In the living room, we had another sink with a small refrigerator and two complimentary bottles of water. We had a safe next to the refrigerator which we did not use. The bathroom had a separate small room with just the toilet which we loved because after using the toilet and making a stink, we could turn on the light/ventilator which worked really well at clearing out the smell and close the door. The bedroom was a bit cramped, especially at the foot of the bed in front of the fireplace, but we had a large living room that made up for it. The bed itself was very comfortable and firm, the linens were clean. However, I got really cold on the first night I was there and had to request extra blankets which they promptly brought us. Also, the extra large pillows on the bed were extremely uncomfortable, forcing us to throw it to the side in the middle of the night. I think it's just there for decorative purposes. We found two extra regular pillows in the closet which we made good use of. The room had a small closet with plentiful hangers. There were dresser drawers we made good use of. There were two lamps, one by each side of the bed on top of a dresser with drawers. I loved the space on top of the dresser for me to place my medication and phone and watch chargers. There were plentiful chargers, USB and C type. Although the chargers on my husband's side of the bed wasn't working and I had to charge all of the electronic devices on my side. One thing about the jacuzzi tub. The wall next to it is really thick and we both had a really hard time getting into and out of it. We were both afraid of falling down and had to climb up slowing, stand on top of the little wall area, and climb into the tub and vice versa each time we used it. Other than that, I have no complaints about this hotel. The rooms are only made every third day we stay and we can tell them when is most convenient for them to do that for us. Everything else we need is brought to us by texting them. The hotel had warm Otis Spunkmeyer cookies each evening, though we only ate it one evening because we were out the other evenings. A member of the staff told me to call him so he could place the cookies in our room while we were gone, but I forgot to call each time. Someone came in our room and placed Ghirardelli chocolates with a cold bottle of water for each of us each evening we missed the cookies. Someone even came in one time and made our bed for us which was really sweet. The staff were all so wonderful and warm, making us feel right at home. And when we got tired, we sat in the chairs at the front of the hotel overlooking the beach below while sipping complementary coffee, tea, and lemon infused cold water. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and highly recommend this hotel to anyone thinking of staying here.

We've stayed at many hotels that offer free breakfast that have WAY more items to choose from, including a pancake/waffle bar, eggs, sausage & hash browns. For the price of the rooms, you'd think the hotel would offer more like a simple Best Western does. The room itself was clean and had a pretty view of the docks. Absolutely loved the staff though!!

I'm a bit of a Mt Ada regular; this was my 6th stay and, due to the rainy/windy weather, the most…read moresurreal. I stayed just after the long Valentines/Presidents Day weekend. All boats to and from Catalina Island were cancelled on 2 days of my visit, forcing other guests to change their travel plans. I ended up being the sole guest for all 3 nights of my stay here! With some whispers of Mt Ada being haunted (but not as many as Banning House Lodge in Two Harbors), I was a bit concerned, but fortunately had no paranormal experiences. To briefly review Mt Ada's history, it was once the Catalina home of William Wrigley Jr. and family, of chewing gum and Chicago Cubs fame. He was instrumental in putting Catalina "on the map", and his descendants still own the Catalina Island Company, which runs Mt Ada, Hotel Atwater, Pavilion Hotel and Banning House Lodge, as well as other businesses. All my stays at Mt Ada have been with the Company, although it was previously run as a private B&B. Mt Ada still runs as a B&B, as opposed to a hotel. It's a pricey stay but has many many perks that justify the expense. These include transportation to and from the boat or helicopter terminals, use of a golf cart throughout your stay, daily made-to-order breakfast and lunch, pre-breakfast continental breakfast, afternoon wine/cheese/charcuterie, 24-hour butler's pantry with snacks like gelato, chips, cookies and popcorn plus alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks, discounts on Island Company tours and activities. Currently there are about 4 main people interacting with guests at Mt Ada, plus "behind the scenes" kitchen and housekeeping staff. My past reviews have mentioned a stay here is more like a visit to a home, as opposed to a hotel. There will be times when you may not see any staff (especially at night). But Pierre, Liz, Tim and Yoli (Yollie?) work their hardest to accommodate guest needs--they are the chauffeurs, front desk, waiters, luggage handlers, concierges, etc. I applaud them all. One of Mt Ada's pluses is its location on the hill (Mt Ada) above Avalon Bay, even above the main Bay viewpoint that all the rental golfcarts stop at (traffic jams are common here). It's quite peaceful, although in busy times the noise from "downtown" does carry uphill. Mt Ada has 6 rooms. The room I booked was the Grand Suite, Mr. Wrigley's former bedroom. It's the largest room, with a separate living and bedroom, a bathroom with a separate shower and tub, and a large terrace above the first floor terrace. It has a fireplace, as do 3 other rooms, and a raised bed that requires stairs to access, as does one other room. The living room has an antique "radio" that is seen in photos with Mr. Wrigley. There are radio stations hand-written on it; I was appalled to see "graffiti" defacing this historic relic. The terrace is fabulous, but alas the weather prohibited much use; I feared the high winds would blow the cushions on the chaise lounges over the railing. Even the dining tables on the first floor terrace were stored; in more temperate weather it's the loveliest place to enjoy breakfast or lunch. The breakfast and lunch menus have some new items and some old faves. Once again a fabulous and peaceful stay. Thanks again to all the staff. With the Pavilion Hotel reopening soon, Mt Ada may be the next property to undergo renovations. I hope it does not lose its charm or homey character.

The Queen's Aviary (Mrs. Wrigley's room!). It has a separate sitting room with two huge comfortable chairs and ottomans and an amazing view of Avalon, walk in closet, nice sized bathroom and a large bedroom (both with amazing Avalon views too!) Pierre, Tim, Liz and staff are welcoming and provide great services to make sure your stay is comfortable. The breakfasts and lunches are top notch meals: tasty, fresh, and nice presentations. Happy hour is wonderful with cheese, meats and variety of crackers, wines, beers and champagne. We can't wait to visit again SOON!

Great LOCATION, 3-7 minutes walk to beach and restaurants - but then, Catalina is very small so you can say that any other place would offer the same thing. The "Cottage" looked cute and promising from the outside. It had a cute fridge that proved helpful. The inside .... Old, sad, super basic with no attempts whatsoever to lighten it up. The beds were comfy there was AC, so that was good. But you truly felt as if you were inside a bad make shift box with two beds , a tiny tiny moldy shower. A tiny vanity with a tiny mirror. The bedroom space was clean, but the tiny shower was very uncomfortable. If I was the owner of that place I would add a cheap full length mirror, add some shelving for bags , a picture, I dunno something to make it more comfortable and mostly important clean that shower mold lines. The lobby offered good coffee. This place has potential to be better, but does it want to?
