I think Catalonia Royal Tulum is a solid 3.5 star experience. It is definitely not some amazing resort but for what it is and how much it is, I think it does the job. I would like to shout out how clean this resort is. The room was very clean and the rest of the resort is very clean as well, including the beach and the pool. The food though is not great. There are some items that are better than others but the food is pretty mid otherwise so don't come here if you really really care about that. Although the food is not the best, no one got sick and that's all that really matters! The portion sizes were also weird -- some things were tiny and some were averaged sized. It was hard to gauge how much food you're ordering. Some things to note -- I do think it's worth it to pay up for the privileged room. It gains you access to the Bloved restaurant which without it means you can only eat breakfast and lunch at the buffet (which is fine but that would drive me crazy). read more

I came here with a group of 7 friends to celebrate a 40th birthday and had the best time! It is a beautiful resort with lots of restaurants, bars, activities, animals and friendly staff. The staff was amazing. So friendly and helpful. It seemed like they enjoyed what they did and made our experience special. The restaurants were each very different. You are given a QR code when you check in and use it for your stay including making reservations. Definitely make your reservations in advance because it will fill up. Some restaurants were better than others, but B-Loved was by far the best! You have to have a "privileged" or "exclusive" reservation to dine here but it is worth it. The seafood is amazing. The rooms are clean but you do experience occasion power outages. The pool is beautiful and the beach is right at the end of the resort so you can go back and forth. I liked how the resort had day and evening activities including dancing, music, athletics, trivia, volleyball, etc. We had a great time and would recommend! read more

When it comes to All Inclusive I feel like this would be a wonderful place. It's known for the surrounding wildlife and super close to so much and yet so far away from all the things that could make this place go to the next level. Let's start with the good: very clean rooms, fresh towels and it wasn't stuffy in the slightest! The walkways that lead you to the buildings were gorgeous and the bridge that leads you to the pool that opens to the beach lights up at night (just look at the photos I have posted... The performances were great! And the entertainment staff knows how to do their job Now the bad: it really felt like a swingers club there seemed to be everyone coming from all sorts of directions. On the walk path there seemed to have quite a few quotes and sayings as you walked through the pathway laid out to you like it was very "Love Driven" with a hint of well if you know you know. The food was alright in some areas and needs work in other ones but for an all inclusive, one really can't complain too much. I went to have coffee or get coffee twice and it was always unavailable... we asked if there was a hot tub and they said no, I asked if they had several different things and they said no but we later found out that they do... so I guess that's the main reason I don't give a 5 star rating, if I choose to go back I will update the review at that time read more

My sister and I went here for my birthday. We were there for 7 days and had the best time of our lives honestly. We have traveled to many beautiful resorts but this one was just amazing. We took so many beautiful pictures and videos of our experience. The staff were super friendly and interacted with us. Most people we met were there on their honeymoon and anniversary. It is a great spot for that. I can go on and on about how much we loved everything but this review would be way too long. I would like to thank them for a wonderful birthday. My sister had told them early we were coming there for a birthday celebration. On that day, they put a happy birthday sign on our door. They gave me a free spa day and my sis was half off. We were pampered, massages were great. Everything was great. Then that night, where we chose to have dinner was by the beach. The staff sang happy birthday for me and brought me cake. It was amazing. My sis and I still talk about how much we loved it there. We wanna go back. When we didn't feel like waking up earlier for breakfast, room service would be us a great breakfast, exactly what we asked for. I know I said I wasn't going to go on forever about our experience but I really don't wanna leave some important things out. There were a lot of restaurants so you choose where you want to eat and we enjoyed all the places. It was never boring, there were always shows, games, dances, etc going on. Sometimes a staff would be walking around with beautiful birds so people can take pictures or play with them. I love this place so much I went twice within three months. Once in March 2021 and once in June 2021. I've been with a friend and by myself and have never felt unsafe. The staff is so friendly and chill. You're offered a welcome drink and fresh towel. The walk from the pool/beach area to the lobby is 5mins or less, walking normally, not a "speed walk" so I'm very confused as to the reviews which say otherwise. If you fly into Cancun I highly recommend booking a private van through USA transfers. It's inexpensive and once you see the lines of people waiting for buses and companies trying to scam you, you'll definitely love the personalized experience. We visited a cenote 2 miles down the road from the resort and it was $30 roundtrip in a taxi. There is a van which stops across the street from the resort. It's $2 PP and is a small local van so it's super packed. If you want to stop at a specific place let the driver know or you'll end up on a street corner in downtown Playa like we did the first time. I highly recommend going to Playa because the food and entertainment is amazing! The first time I went in March there was no seaweed, but if you take your time to do research you would know summer time the Rivera Maya has seaweed wash up upon shore. The second time I went all day everyday from dusk till dawn the employees were out there shoveling and using heavy machinery to get rid of it. The effort they put in, in the blazing sun, in full uniform, is something you should be thankful for. Nevertheless the views are still beautiful. The resort is adults only and really romantic so it seems like its geared towards couples, but there are plenty of single people. There are several different buildings and the walkway to the pool/beach is like walking through a rainforest. At night they have beautiful lights on the walkway. There are several restaurants to choose from with no reservation required. My favorite is "The Bloved". It's only offered to guest who book the "privileged package". The price difference between that and a regular room is not much of a difference so I highly recommend it. All the food is good, but Bloved is over the top. The stuffed cheese rolls, pesto pasta and picanta steak are my favorite. Bloved is situated so you have a amazing view of the beach so at night there are lights going all the way down. It's absolutely beautiful. You can pay extra for a romantic experience to dine alone on the actually beach. Privileged also gets you a reserved section of the beach with speciality chairs and hammocks. Besides Bloved my next go to is the steakhouse, although I really enjoyed all of them. As with anywhere dishes can be a hit or miss, but it's an all inclusive resort so you can order something else and the staff is happy to accommodate you. Both times the room was extremely clean, the view of the jungle on your outside balcony is exquisite. Housekeeping is on point. If you've ever been on a cruise they make those cute animals out of towels to put at the edge of the bed and make designs with the curtains (see photo). There's 24 hour room service. Both times the wait was about 45mins so plan accordingly. The second time I went there was a DJ at the pool and there is a swim up bar. The higher quality liquor like speciality whiskeys, vodka etc. are only for members of the resort, but get in good with the bartender and they'll make an exception. The hot tub is pretty large and overlooks the beach. There is a restaurant next to the outside walk up pool bar that is kind of hidden. I didn't notice it the first time, but this last time I went there and they have amazing "bar style" food. Hamburgers, hot dogs etc. During lunch they'll also have a set up by the pool with employees cooking fresh food like hamburgers and tacos. I highly recommend visiting the spa. I prefer a hot stone and with privileged you get 10% off. The massage was absolutely amazing. They have an outdoor area for you to relax while waiting. There is NOT an option to leave a tip when you pay so BRING cash to tip your masseuse after the massage. The lobby night scene is ok. The shows the dancers put on are amazing but if you're looking for more of a younger atmosphere hit up the bar outside the Mexican restaurant. This resort is on the smaller side compared to the other larger resorts, which I LOVE. It provides a more intimate experience. They do Covid tests on site, which as of right now is required to go back to the US. Just go to the front desk to schedule and it must be 72hrs or less prior to departure. The workers keeps the grounds maintained beautifully, the drinks are a little weak but tasty, and the food was good...not great, but I can't complain. The resort is nice, but it's not a 5 star resort. If you book here, do not book anything less than privilege. As a privilege guest, it's gives you access to B Loved a restaurant that serves premium liquor and seemingly fresh food. The other restaurants are honestly just okay. The quality of meat is not what I expected and the drinks are so sugary I opted for water for the remainder of the trip. Pros: the staff with the exception of the rental car attendant and the late night desk staff guy are super nice and accommodating. They check on you constantly when you're in the public spaces and they're always willing to help you. The spa services were nice, check daily for specials to take advantage of. The fun committee always has shows, games and contests to participate in. The circus show at Rauxa and the water circus is a must see! Cons: if you're renting a car, do it at the airport. The cost is $10 a day vs the 70 dollars cash I was charged after telling me over the phone it was $30. In addition to that, he also wrote down my credit card information but would not give me the option to pay for the rental using the card and then refused to give me the paper or shred it. He's also schedule to be at the desk starting at 9am and not once was there even after I spoke to him and he mentioned he was on the way, was super late. The rooms on the Terrance level have lots of small ants, I had ants all in my bags from them crawling on the floor. Tips: bring bug spray for mosquitoes, especially if you're eating at the tapas restaurants. The bugs are relentless- had to go to the doctor because I was sick from all the big bites. Under no circumstance should you feed the wild life on the resort, it's common sense but I saw lots of guest feeding the coati. Get your covid test within the 3 day window at 8. read more

Let's start with the good: The staff was pleasant and mostly knowledgeable (with a few language barriers involving KEY items NOT included that cost us extra) The rooms were clean and comfortable. (Though the bed was SUPER noisy every time we moved!) The overall scenery is beautiful. There were lots of options for things to do. The tour options they offered were affordable and relatively easy to navigate. The not good: The food was overall, just ok. Really bland. Felt like boring American food ONLY. We wanted flavorful local food! The drinks were inconsistent - same drink made within hours of the last would be COMPLETELY different mix. The pool was FREEZING The deck and pool chairs need some serious replacing/fixing. Some staff really were not clear about what was or wasn't included - which ended up costing us a bit extra. not a huge deal, but something to pay attention to. I could not recommend this place more. I have been to this resort on 3 separate occasions, and my experience is even better every single time. This resort is located on the most beautiful beach, with a phenomenal pool & bar. The resorts offers a wide variety of food choices, all of which you can't go wrong with. My favorite place to eat was Beloved. My room was amazing, always stocked with towels, drinks, and snacks, But at the end of the day, it is the staff that truly make your experience here. As an ETC member, I had a great experience with staff such as Alejandro and Karla, they truly made it their mission for me to enjoy my stay. They treat you as family; I loved getting to know members of concierge, bartenders, servers, and especially loved the entertainment staff. There are different activities held every single day by the entertainment staff that are so unique and truly make your time extremely fun. I loved beach volleyball, every event held at night by the pool, pool games/trivia, and so much more. My favorite staff member had to be Abraham; he has amazing energy, is so friendly and fun, and you can tell he truly loves what he does. I also have to give a shoutout to the others who made my time amazing such as Charlie, Diego, Tita, and Gonzalo. The entertainment staff truly provide such a fun aspect to this resort and uplift everyones energy every single day. I just arrived AND FROM THE START Arturo at the front desk, Miguel for dinner reservations and Jesus at the pool bar are the absolute best! The customer service from all three are off the charts. Five nights of luxury here I come! Arturo made sure we understood all the resort had to offer. The room we wanted was not available so he sweetened the deal. We are happy campers. Miguel made sure we wete able to reserve dinner at the restaurant of our choice. Choices were limited die to COVID-19. However. After he described what was available, we made an inormed and preferred choice. Jesus made sure our drinks were perfect. And he knew our favorites amd particulars instantly. This resort was alright. Easy hour drive from CUN Airport to this resort. The staff were all very friendly and welcoming. They followed covid protocols and made sure temperatures were checked and hands/ feet are sanitized. Arrived a little early and didn't have to wait because they had a room ready in the 5th building on the 1st floor. Tbh, I do not know if it was actually ready. When we went into the room, we saw dead bugs everywhere. On the floor, table and even the bed. And throughout the stay, more bugs invaded our room. For being a high 4 Star I had higher expectation for the room. 3/5 for the room. The resort had about 5 restaurants. However, the Beloved restaurant was for the privileged guests who paid extra. We managed to eat at the breakfast place when we woke up. And managed to try out the restaurants at night. The foods were a hit or a miss. You just don't know what will be good and what wouldn't. Tried ordering room service, but instead of telling us that they didn't have certain items on the menu, they just gave us extra cake and didn't tell the room service server anything so everyone was confused. 3/5 on the food overall. I do have to say that the drinks were spot on though. Never had a problem with the drinks being too watered down or not enough alcohol. The lines at the bar were quite some wait though. I noticed numerous quests were being getting impatient waiting in line. But what can you do. They have to do their job. 5/5 on drinks. They had different events at night time for this resort, however, I wish they made a hall or a theatre to host events. It was weird how the stage was in the main lobby and guests had to scatter everywhere to find a seat to listen to the music and dance. Most of the chairs were not even facing the stage. 3/5 for events. The beach was nice. The sand did not hurt and the water was so warm. My friends stayed in the water for so long it was fun a great time. I think due to covid, we were unable to use the free amenities such as the kayaks, snorkel gear, and the paddle boards. The pool/ jacuzzi was nice too. The water was a bit cold but nice for pictures. It was great that my group always found seats. The pool area was never really crowded so that was amazing. Staff is wonderful. Francisco kept our room so nice, clean, and organized and our fridge fully stocked. Quetzabel and Maria were amazing at breakfast every day. The selection of items was quite large. Try the conchitas. They are the best and so fresh, made on-site. The beach was lovely and relaxing. Georgina was our beach waitress and super incredible. Adelita is the best place for dinner. Try the ceviche, fajitas, enchiladas. The Caesar salad at The Grill was amazing, as well. We walked across the street, aka highway, and caught a Collectivo (cab - white van) for $2.50 each and rode to Tulum town one day and Tulum Ruins the next. It was lovely walking around. We discovered a row of street taco vendors a block or two behind the main drag in town. We wish we had known about it. On our way back to the airport, we stopped at El Fogon for tacos in Playa del Carmen. It was so wonderful! I'd stay here again for some quiet time. It is relaxing and the grounds are kept so nice. For people talking about no oceanfront rooms, we have to remember wildlife. It's their home. We build around them. I was glad to see everyone respecting the animals and their space. It's more 3.5 than 4. This was my first time in Mexico, and also my first time staying at an all-inclusive resort. We opted for the "privileged" upgrade because it has a few interesting perks, including newly remodeled rooms, and according to other reviews, these rooms were located closer to the beach. We found out when we got there that yes, the rooms were upgraded, but they were some of the ones furthest away from the beach. The rooms themselves were alright and the beds were comfortable. The pillows were pretty mediocre. They were half the size of a normal pillow, and almost totally flat. All the staff we encountered were super nice and always helpful. The beach is GORGEOUS! The team responsible for maintaining it were always working very hard to clean up the seaweed that was washing ashore. There was always plenty of lounge chairs at the beach. We never ever had an issue finding a good spot. The waiter would come around every 15 mintues or so taking drink orders, which was lovely. And now on to the food. There were a number of restaurants on site, and we tried all of them. International Buffet: If you needed to get a quick meal, then this was the go-to place. Their breakfast had a pretty good selection of stereotypical foods (muffins, fruit, sausages, eggs, etc). I did not try their lunch, but I did try their dinner offerings once. They were fine. It was a pretty good selection of entrees and sides. Their dessert area was my favorite. Tapas & Bar: We only ate here once. Their dishes are actually quite good. Tried the guacamole, ceviche, and calamari. Service was always pretty fast, and the dishes were super tasty. This was also where we went to get drinks if we were at the pool. The bartenders were all very nice and helpful. The drinks selection is rather limited. For beer, you have a choice between Corona and Modelo...kinda pathetic. Their pina colada was pretty good, as was their margarita. Just an fyi, the booze is definitely watered down. You are going to think I'm crazy, but legit the best thing they made was lemonade. It was so damn refreshing when you are out in 90F weather and 80% humidity. The Grill: Their food was pretty much the same as the International Buffet. Very little difference. I only had lunch there twice. Service was by far the worse that this buffet. Both times the serves never returned to even refill our water glasses, let alone ask how the food was. Toscana: This was the Italian restaurant. We ate here once. We had just come back from a trip to downtown Tulum, and frankly, I was kinda tired and not that hungry. Service was great. Our waiter was very attentive. I had the seafood risotto. I believe they may be using generic rice instead of arborio rice for the risotto. It was the 2nd time I had the risotto at this resort, and it just lacked the smoothness the dish is supposed to have. It tasted more like overcooked rice, than risotto. The dessert was really good, though. I had the tiramisu, and it was quite delicious. Asian Restaurant (I forgot the name): I am going to guess that Asian cuisine is not very popular in Mexico, and also that this restaurant is a relatively new addition to the resort. If you go to an Asian restaurant, the first thing they bring out is usually soy sauce. Not here. A few of their appetizers were Maki rolls and Sushi. I'm not a huge fan of soy sauce, but I do like to dip sushi a little bit in it. We waited for nearly 15 min after our appetizers were brought out for the soy sauce to finally be brought to the table. The entrees were basically noodles LOADED with a sauce that was so salty you could chug a gallon of water after eating the dish. I could not finish it. I ate the bits of chicken that was mixed with the noodles, which were cooked very well. Suffice to say, we did not return again to this restaurant. BeLoved: This place was so amazingly delicious I left a separate review on their yelp page. You can only eat at this restaurant/bar if you upgrade to "privileged" and I highly recommend it. As for the remainder of the services, housekeeping was truly disappointing. All they did was make the bed. That's it. I ate a pack of the Oreos, and thought I had thrown the wrapper in the trash but had missed and it was on the floor right next to the trash can...they left it there, but they had changed out the trash bag so there was no way they had not seen it. I left the wrapper on the floor for three days, just to see if they would ever notice...they didn't. After three days of basically them doing nothing, we just put the "do not disturb" sign on the door. They also only refilled the minibar once. My main issue was the fact that there actually was not that much to do at the resort except eat, drink, and chill at the beach/pool. They had random shows at night, but they were kinda pathetic. read more

All inclusive. Adults only. Prestige white sand beach. SOLD! It's not the typical big box resorts lining up along the Riviera Maya but a more intimate boutique resort built through the jungle and right on the shore. The resort isn't large but big enough to avoid feeling crowded and cramped. Our room was spacious, and since we were here celebrating our anniversary the staff brought us a bottle of champagne and a basket of fruit with a decorated front door. There wasn't a bathtub but a large Roman shower with two shower heads, one directly on top and the other a handheld unit. The hot water turned on immediately so there wasn't a long wait for it. Our room also had a king size bed which was decent. The food - it was pretty good at the individual restaurants as well as the main buffet stations. However, one of the buffets (La Selva) played Celine Dion constantly! I'm not a fan and honestly I hate her music, so to avoid hearing it we went during peak times when the restaurant was crowded. Overall, the restaurants never had long wait lines, at most we had to wait 5-10 minutes at one buffet that was located by the beach. The drinks - they flowed like a river and never stopped! Woke up and drank Mimosas. Had beer with lunch. Tropical drinks while at the beach or at the pool, and cocktails before, during and after dinner. I'm convinced they may have been watered down as I can't explain why I never got drunk! The beach - just awesome. Every morning a crew cleaned up the seaweed off the shore and the beach recliners were set up. Service was a bit slow out there but the bar was pretty close with a short walk. There's only one pool but it was pretty big and never crowded and the hotel offered plenty of activities and entertainment throughout the day. It's a great place, about 80 minutes from the airport but well worth it. read more

I visited Catalonia Royal Tulum with a group of other family members. The resort itself is very nice with nice rooms and beautiful landscaping. The rooms are a good size and have stocked fridges that are replenished daily. The AC and fan inside the room help to make for a comfortable climate inside. The bed and other furniture are comfortable as well. The path to the beach/lobby is lined with native trees, plants, and animals, with a few small ponds along the way as well. The lobby is very open and has fresh air blowing through at all times. The staff is constantly cleaning the outdoor areas to make sure the resort is clean and presentable at all times. All members of the staff are polite and accommodating. Depending on the time of day you will be greeted with "buen dia," or "buenas tardes," and always a smile. This applies to all people we encountered working at the resort, from maintenance staff, to wait staff, and bartenders. Be sure to tip them well for their services as they rely on tips for a living. Those with special dietary needs will find solace in knowing the restaurants and buffets are very accommodating. Eduardo, the dining room captain for the breakfast and lunch buffets, made sure my husband and I were taken care of with our dietary preferences. He would also send the restaurants a heads up for us in the evening so the chefs were expecting us and were able to prepare special dishes to accommodate our needs. The pool and beach areas were also very clean and relaxing. The bartenders at the outdoor bar were friendly and accommodating as well. The resort itself is located between Playa Del Carmen and Tulum, which makes it a great location for day trips to either town, or the surrounding adventure parks. My only complaint, is the people walking around the resort trying to sell you timeshares or passes to the adventure parks. I want to relax and enjoy myself, not be pressured into spending money while in my swimwear. Also, be advised that there are vendors that sell souvenirs on the property a couple nights a week. These items are drastically overpriced and can be found for cheaper in Tulum and Playa Del Carmen. read more

We were greeted very nicely and settled extremely quickly. We were pleasantly surprised by the large and spacious room( was always clean and fridge was always full). Beautiful resort, the interesting and unique design of walking paths, romantic bridges, generously illuminated with Christmas lights, everything inspires romance. All employees of the resort are extremely friendly and kind, always smiling and helping when needed, with the exception of Eugenia- one person whose direct duty is to help guests. Unfortunately, our stay was spoiled by the fact that our suitcases were lost during the Christmas trip, which we immediately informed the resort about. Therefore, when one of the long-awaited suitcases finally arrived on the third day of our stay, we were both pleased and saddened at the same time. The suitcase arrived with a document that did not say a word that the luggage arrived late, and there was no date of arrival. Since we had to spend our own money to buy everything we needed at the resort, these documents were super important for us in terms of getting compensation for delayed/lost luggage. All we asked at the reception was to witness and confirm that the luggage arrived late (we showed them right away) and with a letter and seal from the hotel for the insurance company. As it turned out, it was not so simple: sometimes there was no seal available, then there was no manager, then there were no guest service representatives on-site. A lot of time was spent looking for help. Instead of enjoying a few sunny days, we stressed ourselves out by crying for help. Therefore, when on the third day of searching for the right person we found one of the main representatives of guest service, we were happy, because we expected that this is the person who will help us! Eugenia made the impression of an extremely unpleasant, high-and-mighty and arrogant person. It seemed that she was annoyed and forced to help us, spending her precious time on an ordinary couple like us. Without even looking at our luggage documents, she haughtily declared that we had to prove that we had luggage with us at all, accusing us of lying. I'm sorry, but this attitude is absolutely unacceptable for a guest service representative, who is supposed to be attentive , helpful, sensitive and understanding. At this point no wonder, we lost our patience(who wouldn't?!!) and Evgenia was unable to do anything but call the general manager (we did ask for this from the very beginning!). As a result, he patiently listened to us and helped us. So in the future, if you have any problems, don't even waste your time on Eugenia (or get ready to be humiliated, unless you are a privileged guest, then yes, you might be treated differently) and contact Daniel - thankfully, there is another guest service representative, an extremely kind, polite, always smiling, and easygoing person. Regarding other criteria. All the restaurants are good, "Terrace" was my favorite! If you didn't book a reservation for a dinner, good luck with that! The only restaurant that allowed us to step in without the reservation was "Grill", the closest to the lobby area, we explained that we are new and didn't figure out that for a dinner you must book a reservation, as there's no buffet for dinner time. Highly recommend "Rauxa",it has very good food and an awesome night show. Good we booked it on a very last day of our stay, something wonderful to remember! The food is tasty, but a bit monotonous at buffet(not enough seafood though), with a lot of delicious fruits, and right on the beach you will be offered delicious healthy smoothies. The beach is AMAZING, with clean and white sand, water is amazing with no seaweed, just perfect. My husband enjoyed playing beachball everyday.The only thing I didn't like is that despite the rule not to occupy the lounges, people come, put towels on and go away, same by the pool. We observed this ritual every morning. What are the rules for if they are not followed? Entertainment could be better, it's adult resort, isn't it? I give this resort a 3.5. This was my first all-inclusive resort experience, so I don't really have anything to compare it to, but here's my take. It is a beautiful, jungle-themed adults-only resort with pretty good food, romantic setting, really nice pool and awesome sand beach. It is owned and operated by a Spanish company, and lots of Europeans stay here. There are seven restaurants available onsite with the basic package. However, the upgraded Privilege plan comes with a nicer room (closer to the beach) and provides access to Bloved, which is the best restaurant/bar on the resort. Bloved is on the beach and provides delicious breakfast lunch and dinner, and is the closest bar from the beach. I think you can only get the full experience here if you upgrade. We upgraded when we arrived, and were able to negotiate a free massage and one private candle light dinner on the beach (which was absolutely amazing). The rooms are a bit dated but quite spacious, and the beds are comfortable. The service is really good here, but be weary of the customer relations people (in white shirts) who try to sell you excursions. They will also offer you free stuff to attend a presentation. Some of the presentations can last 4 hours, and are not worth it. Just tell them thanks, but no thanks. The food at the buffets and restaurant were pretty good. Some entrees were actually great. Other than Bloved, the Mexican and Italian restaurants were our favorite. I suggest keeping some pesos and tipping the servers. They tend to be more accommodating when you tip them. The mains problems with this place are the alcohol and the night life. They offer two beer options: Corona and Modelo. In the midst of a craft brewery revolution, this is insulting. I don't care for either of these beers because they are just not good. Plus, they are on draft and tasted flat. The liquor was bottom shelf. Even the "exclusive" liquors, which were only for "members" (yet another status above privilege) were medium shelf at best. I was able to get some of the exclusive items by offering the bartenders tips. However, all of the alcohol was watered down. No matter how much I drank, I could not get a nice buzz going. It just got me tired. And none of the alcohol tasted good. By day three, I didn't even feel like drinking on the resort anymore. That is one of the reasons why we started to venture out and leave the resort. The main reason why we decided to venture out of the resort was because the entertainment on the resort was so lacking it was shameful. They have one crappy "disco-tech" that is only open like three days a week. The DJ is terrible and plays mostly house music. There is no music at the pool. Everyone was complaining about the lack of music. At night they had some crappy rock cover bands at the pool. Throughout the day, they had some craft and activities that were no better than what you'd find at a senior citizens nursing home. They had one dinner show called Rauxa, which looked like a cheap knock-off of a Cirque de Soleil, and was an additional charge of $70 per person. We skipped that. After day three, laying out at the music-less pool got old and boring, so we ventured out into Tulum, Playa Del Carmen and Cozumel, and those days were the highlights of our trip. Even the food we had offsite was world's better than anything we had at the resort. Overall, if you are looking for a very quiet couple's getaway and you are not big drinkers, this is your place. However, if you like some nightlife, dancing and have a finer taste for the alcohol you consume, this is not your place. We loved the area and plan to go back to Tulum and Cozumel, but we will likely get a place through Air BnB and make our own experience. I think this trip taught us that we may not be all-inclusive resort people. We just get bored, and like to explore. The area did not seem unsafe. Just got back from Mexico and it was the longest 5 days of my life! I wished we picked a better hotel, but what can you expect from an all-inclusive hotel? Not much! Room- We got the superior room with two bed. First impression was not great. I was really disappointed in the way it looked. There's also a weird smell that won't go away. It looked clean, but it wasn't. I got bed bug bites on the first night! The next 4 days was just hell because I couldn't sleep at all. Food- We ONLY ate to survive. It was either dry, bland, or salty. I was hoping we got to experience authentic Mexican food. Sadly, that was not the case. I think I lost a few good pounds because I couldn't force myself to eat the food anymore after a few days. Alcohol- So glad we brought our own from the states! Their alcohol sucks! No matter how much you drink, you won't get drunk. It really makes you tired so you give up and just don't want to drink anymore. This place is more of a laid back/couples get away type of resort. As for activities, wasn't interested because there's not much. We just lounged around at the pool or beach. The only fun times we had was when we ventured off else where. So glad we survived this trip! *The mosquitoes are no joke! Make sure to stock up on bug spray! read more

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful time at the Catalonia Royal Tulum this past weekend. We stayed there for 4 nights total. The staff was extremely friendly and helpful through out our stay at the hotel, excellent service overall. The beach was absolutely breathtaking with crystal clear water and white sand. When we arrived we found out that with our package we were unable to eat at the restaurant called B loved located right off of the beach, and that a section of beach was blocked off just for those that bought the "exclusive" package. That was a little annoying since we felt like we paid a lot as it was. They don't advertise this when you book and we had no clue until we tried to eat at B loved and found out that our wrist bands weren't the appropriate color with the "exclusive" package. We did end up upgrading after day 1 because we really wanted to eat on the beach and be able to use the hot tub. We also got to upgrade to a better room which was nice. It ended up being an additional $200 to do so. It was definitely worth it though because the food was much better at the restaurant on the beach, serving breakfast, lunch and dinner with a full bar. I also highly recommend the Tapas restaurant called the Terrace. That being my 2nd favorite to B loved. It was also nice because you did not need to make any dinner reservations prior to your stay. Overall, we loved the resort and Mexico as a whole. It was our first time visiting. We will definitely be back! I already miss the beach! read more

I had high hopes for this hotel. Reviews had this as a 5 star hotel. However, upon check in we knew it was not. This is an adults only resort but the Pool and hot tub closed at 7!!!???? The bar closes at 6??!! Snack bar food is awful. Juice bar is closed indefinitely. Restaurants are hit or miss. Mostly miss. You have to order the appetizer, dinner and dessert just to make sure you get your food on time or you'll be there for 3 hrs waiting. ******You cannot really swim in the ocean because there is a wall of seaweed!!! It's disgusting and there's tons of sea lice. It's been like that for four years but they don't tell anyone that. The Staff is not friendly at all. They are rude and don't come back with your order. We waited for half hour for our drinks then were told the restaurant is closed while we were sitting there eating!?? ***Mosquitoes are out all night and day. We booked double beds for 2 adults, not a couple, but were given a king and told there really aren't any double beds. None of the rooms face the water just the surrounding jungle. Entertainment is severely lacking. Nothing to do after dinner. Everything ran way behind schedule. **The only ATM on premises was not working. We asked for a golf cart ride back from the beach to front desk because it's a 20 min walk and were told golf carts are for security only but that's not true since we were taken to the pool and to our room by golf cart more than once. If you ask 3 staff members the same question you will get 3 different answers. Front desk didn't explain any of the amenities or restaurant schedules. They are not open all the time. The tours are horrible. You spend more time on the shuttle bus than on the excursion. They told us the covid testing was at 8 but when we got there it started at 7am with about 100 people waiting on line already. For a $75 charge they do a preferred/privileged member pass. This seemed like complete segregation on the premises to me and completely pointless! The only part I liked was the breakfast buffet which had a huge variety of items and the pool when it was open. Drinks were well drinks with cheap liquor but the bartenders were good. I definitely would not recommend this hotel unless you had no other option. I travel for a living so I know what to expect from a 4/5 star hotel. This definitely lacked everything required for that rating. It was downhill the entire stay. read more

Beach: awesome, kept very clean, raked daily, attentive bar staff circulate, liked the la moo juice bar Room: a little damp when we arrived, a little musty smelling but we kept the slider open and it was fine as our stay progessed. Very clean room and nicely appointed. Food: overall disappointing. The breakfast buffet is good. Lunch buffet is often disappointing. The upside to lunch is there are always warm corn tortillas and "fixins" for little tacos, with some rotating protein cooked in banana leaves: we loved this. Downside at lunch: pasta station offers three pastas/sauces that are pretty good. But WHY, in the other 8 or so hot food selections would you offer ANOTHER pasta, french fries, rice and another potato?!?! Such a waste and a disappointment. How much starch of the same food can one eat?! Wish there was more local cuisine and their own twist on a larger variety of dishes. The restaurants: sadly, not impressed. The mole in the Mexican restaurant was, however, spot on and delicious! The apps were cold and inedible, dessert was terrible. I get amazing tres leches cake in Connecticut! Tapas bar was so-so. Seafood Paella cooked by the beach on Sunday was really good! Wish they did more fun meals like this! Entertainment: Rauxa show was awesome! Also the best meal we had! Nightly shows by the pool were just ok. Daily activities are pretty basic. Staff: very courteous, always helpful and they go above and beyond to help you. A staff member even took my husband into town to Walmart on a hunt for distilled water! Excursions in the area are a nice variety: we loved the Coba sunset tour which included a great tour of the Coba ruin (last year to climb it we heard), zip-lining and a cenote! Xcaret was ok.... no need to return, personally. We probably will return to the area for sure but will try a different resort. read more

I really enjoyed this resort. My visit was the end of September into early October. It is beautiful and clean and the food is excellent in comparison to other all-inclsuives. The beach - gorgeous crystal clear blue waters. One day around late afternoon some seaweed washed in to shore causing the water to look brownish but all the other of my 7 days there the water was sooo crystal clear beautiful and almost as calm as a swimming pool. There is a good amount of beach chairs. The ones in front closest to the water go first but you can always find a chair. I always got a seat up front on one of the "privlege " chairs. The pool - almost all chairs occupied with Towels. I think half of the chairs actually had people on them. Beautiful pool though. The restaurants at night were really nice. My favorite was B Loved. The seared tuna and crab ravioli are so good! Next favorite was the tapas restaurant - order at least 6 plates p/p if you're really hungry. The decor as the tapas and BLOVED were the best, so chill and relaxed. Next fav is the steak house then thai food. Didn't try the Italian/mexican restaurants because heard it's not that good. The entertainment staff are nice. There weren't that many of them. The Nightly shows were a bit cheesy. The best night was variety night where they had acrobatics. Leaving resort - very easy to catch collectivo right outside hotel. It was only 35 to 40 pesos each way p/p. We used it to go to tulum ruins, xplor park, and playa del Carmen. The other vacationers were 95% couples. A fair mix of 30 somethings to middle aged. Our room was nice and modern. We stayed in bldg 6. Would definitely return. Catalonia Royal Tulum is an adults only, all inclusive hotel & spa on the beach of the Riviera Maya. They have seven restaurants on site (eight if you count the Privileged one) along with multiple bars. Our favorites were the open air Terrace tapas restaurant & Martini Bar. The service was fantastic! Evelio, the bartender, made me my new favorite drink, the Tamarindo Martini with a Tajin rim! For breakfast, it was buffet style, not my favorite but I did get the best omelette made by the happiest singing chef, Guadalupe! My omelette was made with love. The crepes, fruits, juices & yogurts were good too. You can lounge by the pool or on the sand under a palapa & a drink girl will keep you hydrated all day long. If you're more active you can learn to scuba dive, kayak, snorkel, do yoga, water aerobics, play ping pong or water volleyball. They have fun activity directors that truly enjoy their jobs. Rosarita kept coming around looking for our friend Randy who beat her once in a game of ping pong...she wanted a re-match. The rooms were clean, comfortable & the grounds were well kept. The only downside were the 24/7 Super Mosquitos. I used my organic mosquito repellant which they laughed at. I had to use my husband's super strength Deet to keep them away. They did have cute critters roaming the grounds although I forgot their name. We had a great time. Oh, I almost forgot...I had the best hour long massage between the pool & beach for $35.00 US! This is a very nice adult-only all inclusive resort. The rooms are nicely accommodated with all the necessities you will need...the beds are very comfortable. The location is in the jungle and the grounds are amazing! The staff is very professional and helpful...Rosa, an event coordinator is a lovely person with an infectious laugh and bubbly attitude...Ingrid, a server at the pool bar, is warm and inviting. The staff seem to love their jobs and they work hard to keep the patrons happy and comfortable. The beach here is pristine and natural...white Sand and warm water is just what one would imagine for an ultimate invironment for relaxation and seclusion....I compare the beach to Culebra on a small island off the coast of Puerto Rico... One area of improvement would be the cuisine...the buffet was nice, the Tapas bar was perhaps the best, but the Italian and Mexican restaurants were not very good, which is ironic since the resort is in the heart of Mexico LOL...I would advise that there should be a place to get a little something to eat at all times, just in case you wanna a snack between or after serving hours and not have to order room service, but that's barely a concern worth mentioning. The location of the Royal Catalonia is perfect for venturing out to do other things: eco parks, cenotes, Playa Del Carmen, Tulum and Chichen Itza are all nearby... My girlfriend and I went for our 5 year anniversary and had an amazing time. We did the Bloved upgrade and it was definitely worth it. The upgraded restaurant is pretty much the only one open all day and it's right by the pool and beach so it's worth it just for access to that. Drinks weren't super strong but they were yummy. Food was sort of hit or miss but always good enough to eat your fill, pretty typical of an all inclusive. The whole place was super clean and the staff was so friendly. Very chill vibe and not overcrowded. We did two separate days at the spa with a 90 minute treatment/hot stone massage one day and a 30min back/shoulder massage that was included with our upgrade. Both were fantastic and the atmosphere of the spa was so calm and quiet. Part of our upgrade included a romantic dinner on the beach, which was beautiful and delicious. We came back to rose petals all over our room to our surprise! Everyone was so nice and helpful and they went above and beyond what we expected to make the trip extra special for us. They also have a gift shop that has pretty much everything you could've possibly forgotten to pack. read more

Smokers paradise... Perhaps this resort would be considered 4 or more stars by someone who doesn't travel often or isn't fussy about cuisine. Buffet lines, smoking literally everywhere, and good portion of the staff who is nice but not very helpful is what we found here. When concierge tells you a Cenote is a 5 minute walk and it's really 30 minutes on a busy 4 lane highway, I consider that to be poor service. When you ask for change and they never seem to have any, or when they tell you conflicting information about where places are and how much a taxi will be to get there, that's poor service. The restaurant Beloved was excellent and the only place for a decent meal. The staff there was fantastic, especially Alexis. Worth paying extra for access to that restaurant, otherwise you will be eating inedible food at all the other restaurant options. The one red and one white wine they offer is so bad I wouldn't even use it to make sangria. Also i am quite certain the staff was embarrassed to serve the "Mexican" cuisine at the Mexican restaurant on site. It was horrible. They reserve tables at all the restaurants (except Beloved) for "Executive" guests. The Italian restaurant was 90% empty and we wanted to sit by a window, but we were told we could not because it was for "Executive" guests wearing a tortoise colored bracelet. We were there from 8-9:30 and no one ever came in to the restaurant, let alone sat at those reserves tables. The grounds are lovely. The jungle walk is beautiful and all the birds and Coati Mundi are adorable. The beach is beautiful except for the overcrowded chairs and smokers that litter it. Our room decor was a very sleek and cool-mid century modern but the view of just jungle and the other building was not. We paid extra for a "Privileged Suite" and it was not that impressive. All in all it was disjointed. The restaurant Beloved should be what the entire resort becomes. They need to remodel, rethink, and redo all the restaurants to be modeled after Beloved. We actually rented a car, drove to Tulum town, found a boutique hotel and paid to stay the night there. We ended up staying the last two days at the other boutique hotel returning to Catalonia just to bring the car back and check out. I do not recommend Catalonia Royal Tulum unless you are looking for the last place on earth where you can smoke your brains out or get second hand smoke. read more

Catalonia! We came here for my husbands birthday and I can say it was really amazing. The walk through to your rooms to start is beautiful it feels like your walking in the jungle with coatis and iguanas running around you being curious, you have signs all around to take cute pictures with. You also have awesome trees in the way for aesthetic, 2 cute little bridges to cross over which one turn on at night and change colors it's really fantastic. Rooms - clean, safe, and room service on some days were amazing on others not so much. Food - options were okay. Buffets were not the best, I've been to one other all inclusive and for the price Catalonia charges at least the buffet food could be hot to par. Fave restaurant we're the Mexican and Asian. Not so favorite was Italian food is bland and not yummy. Room service isn't good unless you get burgers! WARNING every where you go you feel like you must tip! Chilling spots! - Hammocks, pool chairs, mini coaches, they have it all supper como for table any where is close to the beach and pool. Alcohol - water down drink we're a yes, although we drank as much as we could because why not lol! We didn't always have cash on us because we didn't really want to lose it and when we didn't bartenders seemed a bit annoyed. Location - 1 hour away from Cancun airport, pricey shuttle $80 BUT close to 2 great cenotes (Jardín,Azul) cheap and easy can access for not more than $5 per person. About 15 min from the town of Tulum. Safe area and close convenient stor. Hotel ATM- was not working had to walk to gas station was safe. WARNING- they will try to sell you a member ship which you can decline but I didn't know because they basically invite you to this appointment and give you either breakfast ya beloved or a bottle. We got beloved and the food is okay nothing special, we spoke with one of the vendors while we ate and he was getting to know us. When we finished they walked us over to the office and sat us down and immediately and I'm assuming manager asked this vendor "what did you learn another them, please t me your homework." Which then me and my husband looked and each other awkwardly and knew a sell was going down. Fast forward the try to sell you a member ship to all Catalonia's and they give you prices and estimations and so on. At the end they asked us if it was money that's wasn't let us get it or just because we weren't interested which blew me off. Vendor had no fault this is his job but manager could've been more respectful. Took up about 2-3 hours of my morning, it just shouldn't be asked on some ones vacation. Probably the most thing I disliked about the whole trip. Staff - Some are great some are okay. Because Catalonia isn't so big you see the same people everyday and if you come on a budget and don't have much to spend when you start tipping less you'll see it in the service in some areas. Although they had JORGE a persons who roamed backed and forth who was full of knowledge of Mexico, approached us and helped us out how to get around and how to have fun! Stores- anything like shampoo or sunscreen is super expensive but little items to bring back home are super affordable and they always have sales which is amazing! It was honestly beautiful just could've been a bit better with hospitality. Great for people who enjoy WALKS AND ANIMALS. I was here 5 years ago for a mother daughter vacation and was so impressed, to the point that I suggested it for a getaway with my boyfriend. So disappointed with my return visit. While there are some lovely aspects, like the jungle vibe and walkways, beach area, and clean pool- so much went downhill. For starters, our room had (black) mold in the fabric lamp shades and on the woven tray the coffee maker sat on. The food quality significantly declined- the most disappointing aspect for me. I know AIs aren't typically known for their food, but the quality of the food on my first visit, is what made me decide to go back again. I'm not sure if the poor quality was due to ongoing renovations, Covid budget cuts, or just a lack of care, but it was below mediocre. With the mold and decline in food quality, we definitely won't be going back. read more

It's a cute resort set in nature but definitely not a 5 star resort as advertised. Definitely would not recommend if you are going as a group, they would not accomodate larger tables in most restaurants and would make you sit separately. The beach is very dirty, tons of seaweed that don't get cleaned up regularly will make you want to stay in the pool all day. The service is not great either, there seemed to be a skeleton crew everywhere so wait times for drinks or meals was pretty long. They don't have a buffet style dinner so you will need to go to one of the restaurants for dinner. The only good restaurant was Rauxa, but it was tough making reservations for it. All of the other restaurants were decent with OK food and tiny portions. I bought the dinner on the beach package advertised for $253 US dollars, everything is charged to the room so when I checked out ai noticed they had charged me $298 for another package that wasn't even listed. I booked the romantic dinner and I let them know that I was planning to propose. They set up the bamboo tent on the beach but had not cleaned up any of the seaweed from the beach. They had set up the tents next to beach chairs so the whole time we had people laying in chairs behind us as we were having dinner. Any photograph taken will cost you $20 per picture to buy. Entertainment leaves much to be desired, with nightly shows only lasting 1 hour. The pool closes at 7 and the pool bar at 6. I definitely expected a 5-star experience that we did not get at this resort. Do your research before going, hopefully my experience helps. P.S. Two of our shampoos went missing and we were told there was nothing they could do about it, that we should write the resort & notify them. read more
