I love the taxidermied animals and a great learning experience for kids for different terrains and the animals and plants that grown within them. There are tables to investigate more and many books and information! I have yet to be in the planetarium as they are limited in show times. My kids really enjoy the kids room too- kitchen area, puppets, blocks galore. A safe and fun space for kids of all ages (probably best for those under 6). Most employees very nice - one lady was getting on kids in kids area to clean up behind themselves in a strict manner. Cute gift shop for local gifts. I would love to see an upgrade to the outside of the building to be more welcoming and maybe something's done outside -- garden, bird houses, etc. For it to represent all of York County a few upgrades would be great!!

We recently visited for the first time during the members night Candlelight tours. It's a…read moreone-weekend thing during the holidays showing what Christmas was like in York County in the late 1700s. The tour guide led us by lantern to various scenes throughout the property. The actors were great and I learned some things I didn't know. I would recommend for older kids, my four year-old was getting a little restless towards the end but she still enjoyed it. After, there were vendors, a brass band playing Christmas carols, food (free on members night), and activities like drip candles and snowflake ornaments for the kids. And of course we met Father Christmas who was really interactive with the kids. They do have a fairly large site. Bring your walking shoes because there are trails. Restrooms are in the Visitors center. During special events watch for a posted detour. We'd like to go back on a non-event day and explore. We're also York County Cultural Heritage Museum members which includes this site and has been a great value.

I love history I love museums, I love learning. We went on a Sunday and had to do the self-guided tour. We walked around to each of the buildings and read the description on the back of the map. We watched the video afterwards I'm glad I did it in reverse. It helps bring the whole thing together. The grounds are well-kept. I agree with another reviewer you can spend as little or as much time as you would like. The cost is minimal. The reason i'm only giving four stars is because of the short staff on Sunday no reenactments or people at each of the buildings to talk about them.

Roots go back to the 1700's when the Catawba Indians moved South when they realized it was too cold in the winter, hunting & fishing was a challenge and there was plenty of prime property in the warmer region near the river. They found the soil fertile, the river a great source for food. This tribe made strong alliances with early American settlers and were key in their support to Colonials in the Revolution versus Cornwallis. I had a great tour with Mrs Libby Chambers who told me of her relationship with Mrs Ann Close Springs. The last known person in the US who rode on the zeppelin, Hindenburg. This is where you want to take your out of town, friends and family when they come visit. So many great photos of early Fort Mill and the buildings and business on Main Street. It's free! They simply ask for donations. Parking will be a challenge at prime time. You'll find the best option behind the Clebourne office building.
