This facility and doctors failed my family miserably. After a 5 day stay for pneumonia, my dad was sent home and continued to decline. We returned to the ER less than a week later with the same symptoms. The attending nurses treated my dad as if he wasn't critical and sent us out the door with no discharge instructions from a nurse or a doctor. They did take blood work and we wasn't called about the bloodwork at home till 3 days later by this time my dad had been admitted to Iredell in critical condition. The care and concern for him in the Emergency Department that night was atrocious. Besides all the unanswered questions from his week he was admitted, they would not readmit him. I could write pages long of how bad he was failed. Please advocate for your family and if at all possible avoid this facility. read more

Can I give a zero or a negative number please. Terrible!!! Missed diagnosis 3 times. Better than Frye but... they had a 2 notes on my door. To wear a mask the doctor came in without a mask nurse did and to top it off came in my room before diagnosed without a mask requesting how much I wanted to pay??? see they had my insurance card. I had paid ALL my out of pocket and all my deductible for the year! Had she checked it before she came into my room. She would have known that. Even after that she didn't listen to me and asked how I would like to pay, I said send me a bill. Called Humana. The next day. And I was right!!!! I was released by the Dr. although I didn't agree that he was right I was just ready to go home after waiting 9 hours for nothing. Still sick called Duke found out I had bad infection. Came in er at 1:20am my baby less than 1 year screaming crying I gave him tyenol right before we came we get him they check him get us in a room he calmed down. I have already been waiting 2 hr and 15min still no dr and he's went to his desk plenty of times sitting down. The ED staff are amazing, very friendly, professional, and attentive. They had taken care of me when I needed medical attention. The billing department staff are very friendly and nice as well, however regarding certain "protocol's " the hospital supposedly has for when patients try to pay their bill is absurd. It is very unfortunate that they would rather have & let the patients bill go into collections instead of setting up a payment plan so the bill would get paid. read more

On Monday, April 10th my mother had a catherization in the Cath Lab at Catawba Valley Medical Center. After the procedure, doctors informed us that she had multiple blockages. We were asked to decide if we wanted her transferred to Frye or Wake Forest. We chose Wake Forest in Winston Salem. We were told that the transfer request would be initiated, and that all reports and scans would be forwarded to the cardiac team at Baptist. Nearly 30 hours passed and no reports were sent from CVMC. The cardiac team at Baptist could not decide on a plan until they received the records. Finally my niece called the CVMC Cath Lab and was told the records had not be sent. Somebody in that department dropped the ball. Their inept job performance caused long delays and extreme anxiety for our family who were already stressed over mother's findings. (Reports were sent after my niece's call.) Why can't your staff do their job? Why weren't the reports sent in a timely manner? How difficult was it to do what was promised to us at approximately 10:30 am on 4/10 - no records sent until late afternoon on 4/11? Angry and frustrated, read more

This place needs it's doors closed! Welded shut even! IMMEDIATELY! Gave it one star because I couldn't give it ZERO! These Scumbags admitted my wife through the ER really for no reason,..but I was glad at first so we could get the hell out of the nastiest, dirtiest Emergency Dept I've ever seen (and I used to in a major inner-city Emergency Dept). BUT! When we arrived in room 435, escorted by the Admitting Nurse, she sat my wife on the freshly made bed and handed her the call device as she was explaining what was going on, as my wife suddenly exclaimed, " OH MY GOD", & dropped the device because it was covered in blood! Then we all realized that the bed railings, side of the bed, floor & other surfaces & equipment were covered in someone else's blood! Even the staff were running for hand sanitizer as we got the Hell out of the room. AND! From talking to others, it appears this is not an isolated incident. To add insult to injury, the administration has not offered any blood tests or monitoring of any kind, to see if there is any possibility of infection from blood borne pathogens, and basically advised us there is nothing they can do & are not going to do anything to remedy the situation & to have a nice life. PLEASE! PLEASE! Do not go to this slaughterhouse! Also, if you have had issues, the North Carolina Dept of Health and Human Services in Raleigh wants to hear from you at 919-855-4620, along with The Joint Commission on Hospitals at 800-944-6610. Cafeteria food was below average although pricing was affordable. I have a serious reservation about the extremely heavy use of plastic and styrofoam in the cafeteria. I had an amazing experience at the ER/hospital on 6/19 and 6/20. I arrived at the ER around 8 pm with appendix issues. I was given a room. Checked in. Blood drawn and IV port put in. Seen by the PA. Sent to get a CAT scan. And this was all done back to back with barely any wait time. The longest I waited was for the COVID test (45 mins required) prior to my surgery. I was in surgery by 11 pm. Following surgery, I was offered ice and then crackers. The nursing staff was extremely friendly. Breakfast and lunch was provided and I ate everything. The doctor came to check on me and I was released by 2 pm the next day. I have a 10 month old, and delivered at a different hospital. My husband and I both commented on what an amazing experience/customer service/care I received. I have ZERO complaints and only positive things to say. I would not hesitate to go back to this ER/hospital for any issue me or my family have. read more

They have terrible service. When I got here the nurse put the blood pressure monitor on so tight it left slight bruising and my hand went numb. This hospital has saved my life twice now. The 1st time was in 1985, I found out I had chronic ulcer disease, the doctor that was treating me was the only doctor we had in Claremont. I thought he knew what he was doing. But he didn't, I did everything he told me to do and I took my medicine on time everyday.. Two years later in 1987 I found myself bleeding to death and in the ER AT CATAWBA MEMORIAL HOSPITAL.. I started off at work and I could remember blood started coming out my mouth and the next thing I remembered I was on a bed being rushed down the hallway to surgery to save my life. They had called my husband he got they very quick and signed for me to have the surgery. If not for Catawba Memorial Hospital which they have changed their name now to Catawba Valley and my husband I would not be here today to tell you how they saved my life. read more

Waited hours in the ER just to see a doctor about my chest pains.. 6 hours to be exact. Took the day off from work just to go get checked. No meds were offered, told me everything checks out fine, x rays, blood samples.. Then boom, a bill for $4000 but luckily my insurance, which is with blue cross blue shield helped out a little bit bring it down to $1100, then another bill from wake forest baptist health for $336 for some reason, idk. DO NOT go to Catawba valley medical centers ER, they seem like they're just there for a job to get paid and not interested in the health of human beings. I would not have given this place even one star. I've been there three times on each occasion, I've been horrified. This place is completely incompetent and the employees (doctors, nurses, and all) are an incompetent bunch of fools. Here are my experiences: 1: July 25, 2007: I was attending my younger Brother's passing. He had been treated for cancer at this incompetent place and was given crap treatment and was handed back on a platter, literally, to our parents (I can't even get into the details; it upsets me). He was dying and only had 20 or 30 minutes and we were all there with his friends and our family. As we were crying and praying, the staff across the hall were talking loudly and laughing even louder as we were suffering. Now, I don't expect workers to not chat with each other, but I do expect them to have some f@cking respect and tact. When you have a group of people across the open hall mourning and waiting for a loved one to die (he was only 25), keep your stupid jokes to yourself and don't compete with the family by laughing as if you're in a comedy club. A joke of a staff. 2. Thanksgiving Day 2011: I was visiting Hickory for the holidays and I brought my Father in after discovering a cut on his shin a month previous had grown into a huge flesh-eating-like sore up to his mid-thigh and had spread to his back. We went to this place and ended up waiting FOUR hours until we were finally able to see a PA. Mind you, it was Thanksgiving Day and there was only two other people in the emergency room. I'm not joking or exaggerating. 3. March 2013: I was visiting Hickory and accompanied my older Brother for an emergency and again we headed to this emergency room. This time, we waited SIX hours in that emergency room before my Brother was seen. I feel we would have waited longer if I hadn't had said anything at the 5 hour and 30 minute mark. I was furious and I let the attending doctor know when we saw him. I'm from NYC and I know what crowded emergency rooms look like, and the room at this place was not even close. NOT even close. This place was so unorganized. We weren't the only people who had waited as long so we had support, but I was still shocked and horrified at the lack of organization and professionalism and competence of this place. Why did we keep going back? Because it's very close to us. But, needless to say, we will never go back. We will go to Frye instead and drive the extra 20 minutes. I recommend never going to this place if you want quality care or to even be seen in a somewhat normal amount of time. This place is a joke and the staff should be ashamed of themselves. read more

Been at the hospital for just around 2 hours. My mother has been seen by a nurse practitioner. Don't get me wrong. He was nice. But seriously? 2 fricken hours to be seen. Got told they were going to do a CAT Scan. Haven't seen anyone for 30 minutes to check up on that. Man just started a IV on her. Need to remind you. She's in the "Fast Track" or whatever it is. Haven't seen really any nurses or doctors roaming the halls doing rounds or anything. Are they that understaffed? What's the issue? Seriously. This hospital has downright horrible billing practices. They failed to send a bill for almost 8 months, then called demanding money I didn't know I owed. I asked why a bill was never sent - they claimed they lost my address. I asked for a paper bill - they sent an itemized bill with no option to pay by check. I called again asking for an actual bill - the rep claimed they sent the original bill in February (after claiming they didn't have my address anymore), but finally sent one out. I sent payment on receipt and the check still hasn't come out of my account almost a month later. I find it highly unlikely that it was lost in the mail. Trying to pay bills to this hospital is a nightmare. After calling to ask if the check has been received multiple times, today's rep "can't pull up the system and will have to call back." I was sent to the er by Catawba valley urgent care because they were concerned I had a ot in my leg due to sudden on set severe cramping in my leg with no injury. In tears I pain full leg contractures from ankle to hip. Took hours in Fast Track. Sent home on nominal medication barely took the pain down let alone stop the cramping. By morning both legs were involved. Worse pain than the previous day. Full body contracting because of both legs. Pcp sent me back to the er.... Again in fast track again took hours... Again sent home nominally medicated. Still no diagnosis. Only told to follow up with my doctor. Cramping resumed tonight even taking what they prescribed as prescribed. Worst hospital read more

01/05/2017- I was in a serious car accident. Thank go I walked away with a broken wrist and hand due to the air bag. My husband drove me to Catawba because it was close to the accident site. Anyway, they took me back right away but once I got back to a room I was left there. No one saw me for a good while. Was I in pain YES was I uncomfortable YES...next thing I know I'm finally wheeled out to only sit in the hallway for another few hrs before I was taken to get an X-ray and STILL NO PAIN MEDS. Anyway by this time I had been there about 3 hrs. The dr finally came around and said yep you have some bad breaks. I finally asked him can I please get some pain meds i'm in a lot of pain. He said OMG you haven't got anything yet. Anyway his excuse was well we didn't know if you needed surgery so that's why we didn't give you anything. What-ever. Finally at the 6hr mark I got my temp cast and sent on my way with a prescription. I understand they were busy, but to leave me sitting there crying because I was in pain was cruel I think. read more

I had a wonderful experience at this hospital when I delivered my child. Most of the nursing staff and especially the cleaning staff and techs, were extremely friendly. The women and children's center is absolutely beautiful, modern, and clean. When I came to town I wasn't sure how to compare Frye and CVMC but after being here for several years and learning more about both hospitals, I know I made the right choice. read more

I have been in the E.R. with my husband for close to six hours . 4 in the lobby and two in a room, Yet not once have we been apoken to by a nurse or doctor. He is passing kidney stones and in severe pain and yet not one nurse has checked anything other than the front desk .. Please explain that while people are suffering nurses are eating and talking and playing and doctors are just playing on the computers. I came into CVMC a week ago with a gunshot wound to my thigh and came out my calf I was in extreme pain and worried about my numb foot I voiced my worries over and over again and was told my paramedics and doctors they didn't have "X-ray vision" I was given a CT scan that showed the bullet hit no bones or arteries the doctor came in and said I was being released Dr. Powell told me to take Tylenol and ibuprofen and to start bending my knee in a week I kept asking ab my numb foot and got no response several times I was in and out In 45 minutes to an hour. They took my shoe off in the CT scan room where while I told them the band they had around my feet was putting me in extreme pain the nurses stood in the back laughing and gossiping they also took my shoes off which we called about several times which are now gone I assume thrown away instead of put in with patients belongings. I don't care if I'm bleeding out I will refuse care if I'm brought to CVMC ever again. read more

Catawba Valley Medical Center used to be an AMAZING hospital back when it was called Catawba Memorial Hospital and before it received it's Magnet Status. Ever since then the hospital's priorities seem to be more about appearance than patient care. Part of the problem with the ER is there are a number of what hospital employees call "drug seekers" that go to Catawba because they are not privately owned like FRMC. This puts the ER staff on high alert and anyone who comes in and asks for something for pain a lot of times their file gets flagged and they are considered a "possible drug seeker." For example: We called the ambulance for my 24 year old cousin who had fallen and completely messed up his back. We couldn't get him off the floor plus I knew we weren't supposed to move him because of possible back or neck trauma. The EMT's took him to CVMC's ER. My husband met him up there. 8 hours later they had done nothing but an xray. He still had the uncomfortable collar EMT's put on patients. He finally asked the doctor if he could get something for pain. He was told "If you're just looking for drugs then you came to the wrong place." When I heard about this I was outraged. I'm a nurse and would never treat someone this way. Shortly after the exchange with the doctor the nurse came in, gave him (1 ) 5mg Prednisone, and was released. The staff needs to learn the proper procedure on evaluating patients and determining if they are seriously in need of pain therapy or if they're really "drug seekers" The Patient's Bill of Rights basically states that patients who are in pain have the right to request medicine without fear of being judged and they have the right to be listened to and taken seriously while expressing their feelings, thoughts, and concerns. read more

The nursing staff and physicians at this medical facility are top notch. They did an amazing job taking care of my mom during an inpatient stay for over a week. They work together as a team and are always available for anything you need. They keep you informed of all medical decisions and keep the patient at the center. I would highly recommend this facility if you need a place to send your loved one or to get medical care for yourself in the Hickory area. read more

This is a terrible hospital. I've been here a few times, but do not plan on going back. My experiences with it: 1. Sometime in 2008 or 2009, I went there with a girlfriend about bloody stools she was having. So we waited, and I kid you not. 12 hours. Yeah. 12 hours. It wasn't that busy really. We showed up at night. The problem wasn't severe enough to get us in there anytime sooner. so after a long 12 freaking hours of waiting, we saw a doctor. they checked her stools. and then said to see a family doctor. They wouldn't do anything more. So we waited for 12 hours without any answer, advice, or even opinion. The doctor seemed to not care in the slightest and we barely saw him. He just wanted to get us out of there. 2. In June of 2013 I was having a constant headache for around 4 days in the row. It wouldn't go away. Was worried so went to the hospital. Didn't wait near as long as the previous time. Maybe 2-3 hours. The doctor gave me percocets which ended up irritating and giving me the worst physical pains I've probably ever had (in the stomach) Did absolutely nothing for my headache. Half a year later I finally got to see a good doctor who immediately found out it was a muscle spasm causing my headaches. Of course the doctor at this hospital (CVMC) wouldn't have known that since he didn't even touch me once and feel my neck like this much better doctor did immediately. Once again the doctor didn't really seem to care at all and just wanted me gone. 3. In January 2014 after having a lot of symptoms like lightheadedness, dizziness, shortness of breath, body weakness, and nausea I went to the hospital. I got in pretty fast here through their Fast Track service. The main nurse for me this time was good. She seemed new, but showed a care and even called back days later asking how I was doing. She was very nice. I was given an IV for normal salene and a CT scan. No blood was taken. They didn't even check my blood sugar. Yet again, the doctor seemed to not really care at all and he said my cat scan results were perfectly normal and sent me home without further looking into the issue even though I said I wasn't feeling much better. The problem turned out to most likely be either an overdose or an allergic reaction to Excedrin - a medicine for headaches. Despite telling everyone there I had taken it right before the symptoms showed up, they didn't even mention anything like this as being a possibility. Doctor sent me home right after even though I didn't have big improvements. None of my experiences with this hospital were good and it never seemed like anyone there cared in the slightest with the exception of one nurse. They just want to get you out of there. I've never had a problem resolved here. The experiences might not sound as bad as they were, but its something you'd have to really see when it comes to how the staff there acted and how unhelpful they are overall. Avoid this hospital, even if it means driving further away. read more
