Since we already have our favorite dishes at Cate Zone, we knew exactly what to order as soon as our server came by. Our go‑to appetizer is always the beef tripe -- non‑spicy -- and it never disappoints. We always enjoy it with a bowl of rice, and the combination is incredibly comforting and flavorful. We also ordered the crisp shrimp with egg yolk, which is my 6‑year‑old son's absolute favorite. It's unbelievably tasty -- rich, crispy, and just out‑of‑this‑world good. For our last dish, we tried the crisp sautéed pork for the first time. This one didn't quite hit the mark for us. The flavor leaned sweet and salty with no spice, and it didn't have the same wow factor as the crisp shrimp we love so much. Still, it was worth trying something new. I came here NEEDING chengdu spicy chicken because I love szechuan peppers and love that numbing taste and feel. And it wasn't spicy enough for me until I had to reheat it for lunch the next day. I walked in around 1ish and was immediately shown to my table and given water. The decor inside is really pretty and I liked how it was setup. Upon looking at the menu, I noticed it was grouped by meats and then the noodles and rice section were towards the back. I went with the vegan spring rolls as an appetizer and the shrimp fried rice as my entree. The restaurant wasn't busy, so I figured it wouldn't be long before my food came. While I told them I wanted the vegan spring rolls as an appetizer, meaning I thought it would be our first, they brought everything together. I was a bit annoyed as I wanted them separate but oh well. The spring rolls were piping hot (which isn't a bad thing) but it took a long time to cool off. Also, I was surprised to see 'duck sauce' in lieu of sweet and sour but it tasted the same. The rice was pretty good but I felt like it was missing that wow factor (maybe a little seasoning, pepper etc?) Things I loved: -the menu being grouped by meats and having pictures for each item -they only had chopsticks at the table. The star of the meal was the cumin lamb. Bold and fragrant, incredibly tender, and packed with flavor, it was one of those dishes I could not stop reaching back for. Meanwhile, the potstickers were such a hit that you would have had to pry them out of my daughter's hands. I'd heard a lot of great things about Cate Zone, but our experience was a little lack luster. We stopped in for dinner on a weekday and were seated quickly, then our drinks came out quickly as well. For a weekday, it was pretty busy, but the atmosphere was nice and enjoyable. Once we ordered our food and got it at our table, our server didn't come back once to check on us, but given how busy they were, the mau have been overwhelmed. Would have loved to order more beer if we had the chance! The food was good. The kung pao chicken was our favorite dish and had lots of flavor. The salt and pepper calamari had a great crunch and to it, but could have used more seasoning. It was a little bland. This location is a bigger space with a more modern feel. The food here is absolutely spectacular and perfect for sharing family style. My favorite place as of right now! This is their second location (I've been to both, the other is in University City on Olive) and it's so spacious! I hosted a friend's birthday party here and called ahead. We brought about 25 people and they accommodated every single one. The service is fast, the food is hot and delicious. I've been a few times to the newer Cate Zone location in Chesterfield and I will say that it is a much better experience than the one in Olive. The new location is spacious and has plenty of parking, so it is great for larger parties too. We ordered a bunch of dishes, but I especially enjoy the hot crisp fish and the Szechuan spicy shrimp (we eat it with the shell though so it might not be for everyone). The braised pork belly with noodles, sliced beef with enoki mushroom in spicy broth, and fish fillet in wine sauce were also hits for great flavor and really tender (especially the pork belly). My sister particularly enjoys the sweet and sour pork traditional style which does not use a ketchup base and is much tastier in our opinion. They did mess up our order this time but were great about fixing it quickly. Overall, the Chesterfield location tends to give larger portions and has a much more spacious atmosphere than the Olive location. I look forward to being back! I've made 36 trips to China and this is the most authentic Szechuan food that I have had outside of mainland China. The spicy crispy fish, more often made with chicken, is breathtakingly delicious. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with my food we tried the fried rice, Kung pow chicken and the black pepper chicken. The fried rice taste almost like just white rice with added vegetables to it. I had no idea Cate Zone opened a location closer to my house... but I came as soon as I found out!!! The new location is nicely decorated with modern vibe and great furniture! Lots of room for bigger groups. I came in kind of late for dinner, was seated right away. The food also came out very fast... maybe 15 mins?! I'm very impressed with the portion size of the dishes I ordered. My go to is Hot Crisp Fish. It tasted great, just like at the original location. Cumin lamb has more fillings than the meat but very flavorful. I ordered the special sautéed crispy pork cuz I think only this location has it and it was really good!!! If you're looking for a General Tso's chicken and crab rangoon kinda place, this ain't it. If you want punch-you-in-the-face flavors and dishes you can't get anywhere else in the area, give Cate Zone a try. Service is always great (and fast!), and their Mala tofu is so amazing it turned my chronically carnivorous husband into a tofu lover. We were able to be seated for our party of 10 and we did call in days before for a reservation on a Saturday night. I can't remember all of the names of the dishes, but the beef was one of my favorites. My least favorite was the egg yolk covered shrimps because of the texture it leaves in your mouth after each bite. I think the best place to get chinese food in the western STL area for a dine in experience, i actually think the restaurant feels a little bit strange. it's a bit too big, and i'm not sure how i feel about the dark interior. that said, for people who want a restaurant that's a little bit more spacious... this may be your place as for the food. I think it's really good. you will have fewer of the american chinese classics and more of what you'd typically get in China. some of the things that stand out in my opinion are the cumin lamb and the fish dishes, since the portion is pretty good, and also it's kind of rare that you'll get the opportunity to have fish dishes from a chinese place (since usually the options will be closer to pork or whatever) one thing that I feel like isn't quite right is the double cooked pork. it tastes a bit too strongly like bacon, and the slices are a bit too thin. I do think many places do the thin sliced pork, but it's kind of harder to taste if it's too thin and makes the dish feel like it have less substance. my recommendation for this dish in particular is to chop the pork and the vegetables in this case a bit more wide read more

I consider Cate Zone as one of the 3 Kings of Chinese Cuisine in St Louis (along with Corner17 and TaiKe). The food is always impeccable and the flavors authentic. With the addition of a second location further west on Olive, we are always able to get a table at either locations. In fact, we love the elevated decor at the second location, almost feels like a banquet chinese restaurant. We love the bbq lamb skewers, (super thin) sweet and sour pork, dumpling soup, cold noodle special, shrimp with salted egg yolk, hot plate tofu, cumin lamb, lamb with leek and beancurd, shredded pork with dried beancurd and calamari. My wife had been to the location in U City, but the Chesterfield location is close to our house. What sets this Chinese restaurant apart is the attention to detail. The Potstickers we ordered as an appetizer were perfectly done, steamed to perfect softness and then finished on the grill. The filling was perfectly seasoned and blended. I had the Cumin Lamb with Cilantro, and the flavors all combined beautifully- a blend of rich lamb flavor, some slight chewiness in the texture (but still sufficiently tender in a sauce that had savory characteristics, but allowed the cilantro to put a nice finishing tang. My wife had the braised pork meatballs, which had a nice, very slightly crunchy exterior and a flavorfully seasoned mixture, served with a delicious sauce over steamed vegetables. Even the rice was done perfectly. There are many more dishes I want to try, particularly the tripe dishes and the fish dishes. Based on the quality of the meal we enjoyed, I am sure they will not disappoint. The service is friendly, and the restaurant is very relaxing and spacious. Upon arrival you'll find Cate Zone unassumingly located next to a Dierbergs, don't let the location fool you, Cate Zone is not one of your standard Chinese takeouts, and offers significantly higher quality Chinese cuisine than one might expect. The staff are friendly and swift to greet and seat. Compared to the U City location, the Chesterfield location has a much roomier dining room that makes their decor pop. I ordered sweet and sour pork, braised pork belly, Chengdu chicken, Kung Pao chicken. The sweet and sour pork had a nice thick and light crisped fried layer and a healthy coat of sweet and sour sauce that paired well with the pork, the braised pork belley was succulent, well seasoned, and almost melted in my mouth, the Chengdu chicken also had a light crisp to the fry and was well seasoned and had mala chili oil aroma of Sichuan pepper and red chili pepper, the Kung Pao chicken was a little sweet and lighter on the mala than I would expect, but non the less far superior than many Kung Pao chicken dishes you'll find in the area.
