I was 36, single, and not even sure if I wanted kids, but I wanted the option to have them if Mr Right ever showed up. She was so compassionate, funny, down to earth and kind that I continued to see her for regular exams. Her all-female staff and spa-like exam rooms turn what is usually an uncomfortable doctor visit into a welcoming, supportive environment. At 38, I casually mentioned a dull, numb pain in my right breast. Even though I was two years away from the recommended age of mammograms and had no family history of breast cancer, Dr D sent me to get a mammogram. Two months after my wedding (Mr Right DID show up!), I was diagnosed with HER2+ Stage 2 breast cancer. Dr D not only called me lot tell me herself, but she told me that she'd already called the top breast cancer surgeon at UCLA and gotten me an appointment for the next day - on the surgeon's day off. Additionally, she'd already told the surgeon that she wanted to do an additional egg retrieval/embryo preservation before I started treatment. I got the news that I had cancer on Tuesday and I started my retrieval meds that Friday. Dr D also reached out on my behalf to non-profits that aid breast cancer patients with the high cost of fertility treatments since my insurance wouldn't cover any of it. For years, Dr D walked alongside me, supporting my women's health needs as well as my spirits. She continued to guide our fertility journey and made recommendations for acupuncturists and non-traditional methods. Of course, she used the most recent data from the scientific fertility world as well. When the time came to face the reality that my body just had been through too much and that we could only have a baby via surrogate, she was caring, nurturing and honest. She guided us through the complicated process during the even more complicated time of covid. I'm thrilled to share that, at 45, I am cancer-free, healthy and the mother of a perfect baby boy, made from one of those eggs we froze back in 2014. Dr D made a speech at our baby shower that still gets people emotional when we talk about it. We are now starting our sibling journey with the same surrogate and with Dr D's guidance and friendship. We know that we would not have our family without Dr D. I've had many massages, including prenatal ones, so I know my expectations are reasonable. What made it worse was how my requests were handled. At one point the therapist told me that "if you haven't had a massage in a while your nerves might be asleep," which felt dismissive and didn't really make sense. She then said she would "just press and hold in places" rather than actually massage. That's not what I paid for, especially at this price point. It was clear she was inexperienced, and while everyone starts somewhere, a specialized prenatal setting with premium pricing isn't the place for that learning curve. When I followed up afterward, I was quickly passed off to a business manager via text with very little acknowledgment of my concerns. Their own receptionist had already admitted the therapist was new and less experienced, so the lack of follow-through felt tone-deaf. The owner did eventually offer a full refund, but the way it was handled felt even more dismissive, basically making it clear I wasn't welcome back. Here's what actually happen and yes I did go into spontaneous labor and I attribute it to lots and lots of body work. I had so much pelvic pain I sought out massage therapy at 31 weeks and got regular massages every 2-3 weeks then at 37 weeks started reflexology and induction messages. The day before I went into labor I had an induction massage and went on a long walk the next day that uphill walk did it, I went into labor and had a magical unmedicated birth. Eternally grateful for all my therapists at Sparrows Nest including the receptionist who always welcomed me with open arms and chatted with me giving me encouragement and warm wishes.
