I was made to arrive to my appointment an hour early to meet with an…read moreon-site Patient Benefits Representative to discuss how they would help me with bills since I am a self pay patient. Very kumbaya. I had the appointment and the doctor ordered bloodwork, which I had done on-site immediately following the appointment. Everyone in that office knew I was a self pay patient. Weeks later I received bills from several different labs totaling over $3,000. For blood work. I called the labs directly to tell them I am self pay and asked to pay the self pay rate. They both told me they do not offer self pay rates. The doctor sent the samples to labs that do not offer self pay rates! I was never informed of the expected cost and they did not give me an opportunity to decline, ask for less expensive testing, or shop around. A reasonable person would not expect blood work to cost thousands of dollars. The federal No Surprises Act generally requires health care providers to give uninsured or self-pay patients a Good Faith Estimate of expected charges before scheduled services. This was not done at all. After I received the bills I reached out to the doctor's office directly to try to get help from them to reduce the bills or negotiate on my behalf. E-mails and calls went unanswered. When I finally did track down an actual person who is a "Patient Benefits Representative" she was absolutely no help. She ignored my calls and e-mails to the point that I drove to her office and demanded to meet with her in person. She acted like she had no knowledge of my situation before I met with her in person, months after I had been reaching out. After that her only responses to me were, "I tried calling but no one answered". Had I known the cost I would have declined the blood work because it was cautionary and mainly to make me feel better that nothing major was going on. Both of the labs have now sent me to collections and I assume that I will be dealing with them on my own, as the "Patient Benefits Representative" at the doctor's office doesn't seem to do anything useful for anyone. IF YOU ARE SELF PAY AND GO TO THIS DOCTOR, MAKE SURE YOU KNOW UP FRONT WHAT THE COSTS WILL BE.

Within 3 minutes it was obvious he was a genius...and I don't just throw that word around. I'm so happy to have found Dr. Kocs. He's incredible. I'd trust the care of any member of my family to him - no matter the severity of the disease - without hesitation. I truly think he is in the top 0.5% of doctors in terms of skill, intelligence, and charisma. Last thing. He takes a probabilistic (evidence-based) approach to treatment. That's what all doctors are supposed to do nowadays. He actually does it.

The people who answer the scheduling phones say they can't schedule you because they don't have correct computer permissions and that a scheduler will have to call you back in 24-48 hours. If you ask them to leave you a voice message with your appointment date and time, when they call you back, they won't do it. They'll just hang up and not even leave you a message. Then you get to start the whole scheduling process over again, like you never called the first time and like they never screwed up, and this is regarding cancer, so we're all actively dying while waiting for an appointment. I highly recommend finding a different cancer clinic. This one is the worst!

I sure hope her cancer is "slow-growing" with the time that trying to connect with this person is taking. If you visit Tx Onc Central, you will realize that they have way too many patients, it is always crowded, and the employees are grumpy, understandably. The checkout people don't want to help you and will just let you stand there until one of their co-workers is available. The oncologist actually asked me "did I order that test?" when I asked about the grim results. He had to pull them up on his computer and review them for the first time with us standing there in the exam room at the follow-up appointment. Would not recommend.

I'm on Medicare with a Part G supplemental policy, which means that after my annual deductible (around $232), I should have no out-of-pocket costs--what Medicare doesn't cover, my supplemental insurance does. Over the course of my care--including ultrasound, CT scan, PET scan, biopsy, and a 10-day hospital stay totaling nearly $500,000--I had zero billing issues with any provider except this one. My GI doctor, ARA, primary care physician, St. David's Medical Center, and multiple specialists all billed correctly with no problems. Nearly a year later, this practice billed me about $18. After spending significant time on the phone with them, Medicare, and my supplemental insurer, that amount was revised to about $14--which I ultimately paid out of frustration after hours of back-and-forth. Now I've received a new bill for $640 (from March 2025). When I called, I was given unclear explanations about "co-insurance" and told to contact my supplemental insurance company--but the bill itself is difficult to interpret and includes vague line items like "Adjustment SEQUESTRATION W/0," with no meaningful explanation. At this point, I've lost confidence in the billing process. I will be filing complaints with the Texas Department of Consumer Affairs and the Better Business Bureau. There's only so much time and energy a patient should have to spend trying to resolve what appears to be a billing issue. PREVIOUS REVIEW, WRITTEN APPROX. 3/25 After determining I had a lesion on my liver from an ultrasound, I had a CT scan and then a biopsy. I was referred to Texas Oncology by my GI Doctor and got an appointment with Dr. Chadha within a few days. Dr. Chadha was great. Calm, confident and very knowledgeable. We were pretty scared but although he didn't minimize the danger of this cancer, he said that it looked as if it was localized. He ordered a PET scan to see if this cancer had spread anyplace. Then set up an appointment with Dr. McKenzie, the surgeon, for a week later. I also had several vials of blood taken in the office before I left. I was pretty impressed with the efficiency of the office. I went to see Dr. McKenzie the same day as my PET scan. He said he'd glanced at the results and it looked as if nothing had spread, but it still had to be evaluated by the radiologist. He scheduled surgery to remove part of my liver for a short time later. I went in for surgery at St. David's Medical Center. I have to give a shout out to that hospital. I ended up spending 10 days in the hospital as my digestive system didn't "wake up" properly after the surgery. I had been told that there was a very good chance this would happen and he wouldn't send me home until it was working. The people who treated me at that hospital were marvelous. Every single nurse, tech and cleaning person was just terrific! Two days after the surgery Dr. McKenzie told me that the results couldn't have been better. He had removed all of it, there was no spread anyplace and I was cancer free. I was thrilled that I wouldn't need radiation or chemo either. Dr. McKenzie is such a warm, empathetic gentleman. He takes pride in his work and who wouldn't be proud of performing life-saving surgery? Marvelous Doctors!

After calling Dr Martinez's office with continued complaints her annoyed secretary relayed that I should take some Advil. After 4 more days of constant agony, Dr Martinez was finally able to see me. She walked in the room, kept her back to me and said "I hear you're experiencing some discomfort" to which I replied "I've never experienced more crippling agony in my life" she spent approximately 5 minutes with me, wrote me an script, advised me against going to the ER and sent me on my way. That night was the worst of my life. (Valentines day) I called again in the morning, the secretary took a message and never called me back. Finally I went to the ER where I was hospitalized all weekend and needed emergency surgery. The first doctor I saw said I looked like I had inflammatory breast cancer. My surgeon said you could fill a coffee cup with what came out of my breast. Dr Martinez clearly lacks compassion and bedside manner. It's evident that she's just checking off her days till retirement. I am traumatized after what I endured due to Dr Martinez's negligence.

I can't express my gratitude enough to him and to Dr. Martinez. She is very professional and businesslike, but also warm and patient and kind. Her office staff are BEYOND COMPARE when it comes to making you feel comfortable, welcome, even getting a laugh in here and there. She did an ultrasound in the office, and though she'd just done the biopsy, she told me she felt pretty sure it was malignant (which I appreciated because I wanted the straight story and I wanted to not be in suspense a moment longer. And she was right because she is that experienced and expert.) Although I was told that the biopsy of my lymph node might take two days to get results, her staff called me the NEXT DAY to let me know it was negative. Another big plus for me and a small sigh of relief. She guided me at every step, helped me with understanding the research, and when it came time to decide what to do, she didn't just lay out the options, she gave me wise advice and counsel... again, much appreciated. I wanted an expert to tell me what they would do if it were them... and the mass was sufficiently large in comparison to my B cup breast that she suggested I choose (if possible) a skin-nipple sparing mastectomy on that side, not a lumpectomy. That's what I opted for. Here's what you get with her-- she is SO skillful at what she does, that she was able to get me a clean margin and save the skin and nipple. How close were we??? ****.48 mm**** yes that's less than half of a millimeter. The difference between oops, sorry, we can't save the skin, you'll have to have so much other surgery to create a breast using your stomach or back skin and it will take months and never look anything like your breast.... and oops sorry, we saved the skin but there's a tiny bit of cancer still there so we have to do it again. She also recommended me to a wonderful, kind, skillful plastic surgeon (John Eggleston) and between the two of them I am.... grateful, and as happy as you can be having had a mastectomy. Today is my one year mammogram checkup, I've been on tamoxifen (no chemo, no radiation) all this last year, and I wanted to give a huge cheer for Dr M and her staff in case anyone else out there needed some insight on who to choose for the saving of their life.

What??? Then we call to schedule the MRI at the 3rd party testing facility after getting a call that insurance had approved the test. Texas Oncology calls several hours later and tells us to make the appointment for an MRI. Apparently there are serious communication issues at this facility. Seriously question having this facility treat either of us since they don't appear to get the signals straight. We were impressed teased by Dr Cox or we wouldn't be going back.
