Have received great care from the Catoctin Veterinary Clinic in Thurmont. Unfortunately, we needed to make end of life decisions and the clinic staff couldn't have been more compassionate and helpful. After paying around $700 to have my cat seen recently it was suggested I bring in a fecal sample from my dog as well which I did today ~ the cost approximately $45... I asked if I could pay later since I get paid in two days and have been out of work due to a broken foot and have been having to put payments for things on my credit cards the last 3 months... they "unfortunately" declined the request. Keep in mind that I have been a customer for over 10 years and spent THOUSANDS of dollars over the years for my animals to be seen at this facility. A long review but worth the read . . . Dr Bramson and Dr. Keane of Catoctin Veterinary Clinic are the BEST, most CARING Vets I've ever encountered. My husband and I have had animals all of our lives, so we've had lots of contact with veterinarians over the years. We currently have 3 cats and 2 dogs. About a year ago, one of our cats developed some health problems. Our previous Vet was unable to diagnose and treat the cat after several visits and numerous expensive tests. During this time, we never actually saw the vets, just talked to them on the phone. So we decided to try a different Vet. A friend recommended Catoctin Veterinary Clinic in Thurmont. When we called, the staff was kind and made an appointment for us the same day. We saw Susan Keane. She spent close to an hour with me and my kids as we discussed our cat's condition, and she did tests. She asked many questions about the cat's health, food, habits, and lifestyle. We stayed until after the test results came back (very quickly). And she was able to put together what was going on with our cat. She was kind, understanding, patient, and great with my kids (one has an interest in becoming a vet). Dr. Keane prescribed meds and recommended some lifestyle changes. We now have a healthy and happy cat, thanks to Dr. Keane. About 6 months later, our youngest cat became suddenly ill. We were able to get an appointment within less than 2 hours with Catoctin Vet Clinic. We saw Dr. Jonathan Bramson. He had a very similar demeanor as his colleague. He examined the cat, asked many questions, and listened to our questions and concerns. He decided that our cat needed a test that the required equipment that they didn't have. So he made arrangements to use another local Vet's equipment. The other Vet wanted Dr Bramson to accompany our cat for the test (not sure why). But much to my astonishment, Dr. Bramson agreed, and he met us at the other clinic for the test. When these and some other test results came back, Dr. Bramson recommended surgery that needed a specialist. So he personally called the specialist and made the surgical arrangements for the next day, a Saturday. And then he said he would meet us at his office the morning of surgery for us to pick up our cat. He said he wanted to make sure our cat was stable enough to travel. And again, what I found astounding was that it was Dr. Bramson's day off. Yes, he came in on his day off for my little cat. Fortunately, the surgery was successful and our cat is doing well, thanks to Dr. Bramson. In all my years of having pets, I've never come across a Veterinary practice with Vets who are so dedicated to caring for animals AND for their human family. It seems clear that for Dr. Keane and Dr. Bramson and for their entire staff, veterinary medicine is not just a job, not just a way to make a living, but a true calling. Both vets have helped us tremendously with our diabetic cat. They originally made time to see us after being faced with a 10k emergency visit bill that we declined treatment with. They fit us in and have saved us tons of money. They care. We love our pet like a child and I am grateful for this practice. I have read previous reviews on price gouging and we did not have this experience. They have our loyalty. read more

Revising my previous 4 star review as this appears to be just another maximize the revenue pet care provider. This place totally gouges customers for any prescriptions needed and has made it super difficult to avoid their price gouging RX prectices by requiring customers to get a written prescription and mail into any on line provider for fullfillment. I just left there last week and they charged $20.70 for a 7.5ml tube of Animax oinment - same item anywhere on line is $10!! Thats an absurd markup and frankly this place should be ashamed of themselves. BRUTAL and they back it up by inconveniencing their customers trying to use other more reasonable options to support their brutal mark ups. Looks like just another conglomerate big business vet mainly focused on maximizing revenue at their customers expense. read more

They are compassionate, knowlegable, wonderful people and I would not hesitate to recommend them! I love everyone there. They go above and beyond. Dr B. came out in wee hours of the night to check on my boy when he was there sick. And he reported right to me, knowing I was sitting on pins and needles, worrying. This isn't the first time he has gone above and beyond. He came to my house when it was my Bentley's time. I was able to lay in his dog bed with him and hold his paw. It made the unthinkable manageable. I have used Dr Keane and Dr. B for the past 10 years and I absolutely love them and their staff. STAY AWAY from this place. I go in about 8:55 in the morning with my very sick little Maltese dog. I ask to see the vet, was told they were waiting on a 9:00 o'clock emergency appointment. There was NOT one animal patient in the clinic and they don't have time for the vet to take a quick look at my sick little dog. I was told I could get an appointment the next day. Three vet assistants sitting around and a rude desk person, too busy to help me, myself and the rest of my family will never use this clinic again. read more

So glad I found this clinic! I've been bringing my pets here since I moved to Thurmont a few years ago and have never had an issue. I've found their prices to be very reasonable, the staff is always wonderful, and the veterinarians are knowledgeable and caring. I've dealt with all three of their vets and they're all great. When I had to put down my ill cat two years ago, Dr. Bramson was kind enough to come to our apartment to euthanize her so she didn't have to spend the last moments of her life terrified in the clinic. Dr. B and Dr. Keane have been wonderful with our furbabies! We don't trust them with anybody else. Their kindness with us during some of the toughest choices we needed to make has been unbelievable. In the 12 or more years that we have been going to them they have never once advised us on something that would cost additional money, in fact they have always advised that we could spend the money but that it may not help the outcome. My favorite thing about Dr. B and Dr. Keane is even if we are out and about they know who we are and never go without saying hello....TRUE small town vets. We have several cats we've brought to The Catoctin Vet Clinic over the years. It is with much praise that we recommend Dr. Keane & Dr. Bramson and their staff. They are professional, responsive, and do whatever they can to take proper care of our beloved pets. Vet bills can surely be high at times as that is typical in the industry - but I have never felt that this group is exploiting customers & trying to run up the bills through testing as another reviewer claimed. This is not my regular vet anymore, but I used to take my pets to this office when they were in their old location near Goodwill. When they moved to their current location they raised their rates and became too expensive for me. This coincided with a time when my family had taken in a number of strays, and we had to look for cheaper options. For anyone who needs it, the Petco in Hagerstown MD (and other locations) has regular pet vaccination services (vetcoclinics.com), or apromise.org offers low cost spay/neuter and vaccination services in Hagerstown. Tractor Supply also has regular pet vaccination clinics. My regular vet now is Gettysburg Animal Hospital. For routine services like vaccinations, their fees are less than half those at Catoctin Vet Clinic. The last stray male cat I had neutered and vaccinated at CVC was over $300; at Gettysburg it was under $100. I simply could not afford to take care of the number of pets that I do if my only option was Catoctin Vet Clinic. Overall I've had good experiences with the vets at CVC and never felt that they were going hog wild with my money. They are expensive compared to Gettysburg, but I think their fees are in line with most vets in Frederick. When I switched to Gettysburg, my plan was to use Catoctin Vet when my pets had medical issues, and use Gettysburg for routine things. Maybe 5 years ago one of my dogs was acting sick and developed a fever. I took her to CVC and the bill ended up being $400. Blood work $100, another $100 to have the results asap, but then not sure where the other $200 came from. The lab results were normal and we decided to just wait and see how my dog was the next day. She ended up being fine, no medication or further work necessary. Had I taken her to Gettysburg, the bill probably would have been $50-$60. So that was the last time I used CVC for a medical call. Since then I have used CVC a few times, when I had a dying pet that needed to be euthanized and I couldn't bear the wait to get an appointment at Gettysburg. The CVC fee for this ends up being in the $175 range somehow - just for an office visit and euthanasia. I'm disturbed to read the review from Janine C., about her dog with giardia. I can't speak to that directly, but have discussed giardia with our regular vets. A few years ago we adopted a dog from the animal shelter, and when we took him to Gettysburg for his first exam the vet told us that giardia was common in the shelters, so we should treat him for it. The vet told us that the tests for giardia could be inconclusive, but it's simple to treat for it - Panacur for 5 days instead of the 3 day treatment for worms. I'd be upset to spend $700 on a giardia diagnosis when you can buy Panacur very cheaply on Amazon. For me, Gettysburg is only another 15 minute drive vs CVC, and is definitely worth it for the savings. Gettysburg is ALWAYS busy though and even with an appointment I often have to wait for 20 minutes or more. If you only have a pet or two, Catoctin might be a good option. I like the vets there, it's a nice office and there's usually not a wait to get an appointment. read more

I have been receiving excellent care for my cat (who has Inflammatory Bowel disease) for over a year now, I wish I had found this practice sooner. I've had to interact with each of the veterinarians there at different times, and they have been more than helpful, and very caring. Do not use this veterinary clinic. The vet Jon Bramson uses any excuse to jack up the bill and to do unnecessary tests. For a Giardia diagnosis (which wasn't definitive despite the fact that the dog was positive for giardia) he ran the bill up to over $700. Instead of doing common things first, Jon wanted to do x-rays and an ultrasound. He made us believe the x-rays were necessary and then did not disclose that he was sending them off-site for reading. I demanded that be removed from the bill and he did (because that is a blatant license violation), but overall standard of care is seriously lacking. Instead of looking for the most common diagnosis (which would be common for most animals), Jon is looking to do every test known to man and dog-kind to unnecessarily inflate the bill. On the telephone as I was being told that the dog was positive for giardia, Jon was trying to convince me to test the dog for pancreatitis (a super rare ailment). Why on earth would a reputable or ethical veterinarian do this when we should be eliminating the giardia first? I will never ever use this clinic again and I advise everyone not to either, unless you want to do every possible test and pay $1000 for a $100 ailment. read more
