I will say it is on the pricey side, but I feel that sometimes you pay for the service you get. Not sure about some of these crappy reviews but I'm the real deal, a local resident of Frederick who didn't worry about price shopping for my sick pet. I called Yellow Springs last Friday morning after being in the ER the night before, Dr K called me back promptly and advised me to come in ASAP. Daisy was there all day, catheterized, given IV fluids and blood work, and diagnosed with pancreatitis. The entire staff stayed late, helped carry my 75 pound dog to my car, and Dr K called the vet at the hospital, sent records and helped navigate my dogs admission. They didn't do all of this for free, but they were efficient, compassionate and quick to help in my time of vet emergency. My sweet girl Daisy is now at home and doing great. Your pet will be treated and cared for any issues as needed, so the bare minimum is covered. Business purpose accomplished. That said, they take and treat your pet outside your field of view so it's hard to tell if your pet is being treated well and humanely. I am used to clinics where I can go in and be with my pet while they are being treated (which I prefer). They also tend to just say what they did for treatment before discussing with you what needs to be done, why, and if you agree to proceed or want to discuss alternatives (if any). So it feels like they remove your control over the decisions over your pet's health. I will always choose the best for them but would prefer to be in the loop, personally. To be fair, this varies by which vet or vet-tech you get serviced by, but shows that there is no SOP of service from the business. Lastly, agree that this is one of the most expensive clinics in the area. Their prices are most definitely higher than any other vet clinic that I have been and they may delude themselves if they think the contrary. For example, before coming here (from a clinic 35miles away near my former home) a wellness check for my 85lbs dog was $75 plus $25 for fecal sample test. Here it's $150 wellness check with no fecal sample test, and if I want to see the vet specifically I have to schedule vet time separately then tech time. The other clinics I've been the vets always come by at no extra cost. The neighboring vet clinic quoted me a wellness check at $100, also no fecal sample but still cheaper than YSVC. read more

Everyone here is incredibly kind. We have only had positive experiences whether the visit be for an annual check, an emergency, or an allergy shot. If I could give zero stars I would. Do not take your animals here.? Vets rotate and turnover is high. They are also one of the most expensive vets in the area although they beg to differ. I did a comparison of 10 vets in Frederick County (after spending way too much money) and Yellow Springs come in at the Top 2 most expensive. Beware - make sure you ask about everything and which tests they will be performing on your pet- even if a wellness check - or any type of checkup or blood work as they will perform tests without asking and then charge you a fortune. Most vets go through everything and provide an estimate first and obtain your permission to proceed. Furthermore, the technicians are so rude that it is incomprehensible that they have a job. I acknowledge I was very irritated during my FOURTH visit to the vet when they insisted on drawing a blood panel AGAIN as my cat was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. Complete blood panel ran $500 first visit. THREE ADDITIONAL visits thereafter @ $124 ea + fees - over and over- as they kept insisting I return that they had to get the dosing right. FOURTH follow up visit and they decided to charge me more and run panels that were never discussed nor did I ask for. This is recurring. I was clearly frustrated as the T4 panel was $124 and now $175. Why I asked? They decided to run additional blood tests without asking me. When I asked to speak to a doctor, another technician came in who thought she could bully me into accepting whatever they felt like doing - you know the type that thinks she is the only technician on the planet. Finally I INSISTED on just another T4 test (at the original $124 price) and to have all my medical records sent to me as I clearly need another vet. With that the technician SLAMMED THE DOOR SO HARD THE ROOM SHOOK! LOL. Really? And then they had the gall to say "I wasn't nice." I'm nice but I don't like be taken advantage of - do you? Whatever you do, find any other vet clinic other than Yellow Springs. It's not worth ruining your day! read more

2 visits, $700 for very little service- super friendly but a group of shysters. 1st visit $550 for a few shots and a required wellness check ( aka pure profit generator) Had to go back a week or so later ( no other short term options) and they whack me for another $150 for an antibiotic prescription. This gyp joint obviously focused on maximizing billing dollars at each and every opportunity. Don't let the fake reviews and bogus 'reputation management' ploys fool you- they will charge you up the Ying Yang for anything, everything and next to nothing that they can! Think twice, three times b4 going here!! Update- I needed an immediate refill for dogs thyroid prescription. Put order in to Chewy days after 2nd visit to Yellow Springs. Chewy called to advise the prescription approval was denied by Yellow Springs- noting 'I was no longer an active customer of theirs'-!? I called Y.S. and spoke with the clinic manager who immediately referenced the critical review when I asked about the prescription denial!! I mentioned this was completely unprofessional and more obvious that they don't truly care about my pets health, putting it in jeopardy out of spite! In a tight spot getting a refill elsewhere b4 she runs out. The Office Manager then reversed position and said the rx strength was incorrect-- I call bull****- that wasn't the reason noted to chewy on the denial! They finally agreed to approve the Rx with the understanding we would part ways- - that was my plan and honestly wish I never went here in the first place - steer clear of this 'Big Business' profit focused gyp joint! Also, she brought to my attention a few services I didn't note on this review- anal glands expressed and full spectrum blood work-- I NEVER asked for or requested Full Blood Work to be performed- just thyroid levels checked to ensure Rx strength was appropriate- SO they overcharged me for things I didn't ever request nor was this made clear to me at the visit! We have always loved Yellow Springs Vet for the almost ten years we have been coming here, but until last week, we had no idea how much we took this wonderful clinic for granted. Last Friday we had to bring in our beloved dog to be put down. We had been dreading it for days, obviously, and had so many feelings about this terrible appointment. Pulling up to the clinic filled me with dread, but my husband took my hand and we went inside with our dog, Gordon. The staff at the front desk recognized us immediately and took us straight to a beautiful and peaceful room. It was so nice to not have to sit in the waiting room with others. Dr. K and Molly, one of the techs, took such wonderful care of all of us. While this type of appointment will never, ever be easy, they were graceful and kind. They shared exactly what to expect and then gave us the space and time we needed to mentally process everything. We will be forever grateful. While I want the best for my animals for their yearly checkups, dental cleanings, and vaccinations, I want and need someone even better than that for end of life care. And that's what you get at Yellow Springs. Compassion, grace, love, and comfort. We started coming here after moving to the north side of Frederick and couldn't be happier with the care they provide to our dog. He is super nervous of vets from past experiences at other offices. This clinic took care of my Service dog Miranda when she was really Sick. When i called and explained the vet said he was heading home but would wait for me Upon my arrival he told me surgery would be needed ASAP he checked her in and was on phone when he came in the next morning and again after Surgery. Many years later I lost Miranda and they were a HUGE help in arranging her cremation and helping me deal with it that day. Dr. Ruppert took care of our elderly large dog when our usual mobile Vet was off the road. She was very sore and difficult to treat. His entire staff helped treat her daily for over a week until she was pain free and one person could treat her. She made a full recovery. The staff is very genuine and loved her. Yellow Springs is amazing!! I recently had a horrific experience at Banfield that caused me to search for a new vet. A friend sang the praises of Yellow Springs, so despite being 30 minutes from my house (more like 45 minutes to an hour in traffic) I gave them a try. I arrived 10 minutes late due to a car accident on the highway at 7pm on a Friday night. I was cheerily greeted and quickly taken back to an exam room. The vet tech was so kind and got down on the floor to pet and play with my dog to help make him feel less nervous. She was quick and gentle while taking blood. The coolest thing was they did an EKG of my dog's heart, printed out the results, and explained in depth what they meant. After taking blood the vet tech offered my dog a treat. He didn't like it, so I told him I'd give him peanutbutter when we got home. The nurse then went out of her way to find PB and gave my dog a spoonful. He was SO happy!! The vet we saw was Dr. Geoff Ruppert. I was very impressed with his gentle demeanor. He also got down on the floor to pet and play with my dog. He spent plenty of the with him and gave a very thorough exam. Both he and the vet tech reviewed the optional tests and vaccines. Never once did I feel pressure from either one to do an optional test or get a vaccine that wasn't required. When I was unsure, they gave me plenty of information to help me make my decision. After the exam and shots, the vet tech gave me a tour of the facilities-- so cool-- no vet has ever done that before! The employees are allowed to bring their pets to work and I thought that was adorable. The prices were very reasonable. $70-ish for the exam and $20-$30 for each vaccine, $40 for a fecal exam. All in all I'm incredibly impressed with this vet. I've found a vet that I trust and will recommend to all my friends! Update: I also brought my cat here. He was diagnosed with diabetes. The vets have been fabulous in telling us about various effective, affordable treatment options and helping us pick the best one for our situation. read more

I went to yellow springs recently because of a neighbor's recommendation. I went there for a second opinion on my dogs ACL tear. I had heard that sometimes they didn't need to be repaired right away or at all. My regular vet, Prospect, had already taken x-rays and the doctors exam confirmed that it was a partial acl tear. Upon entering the hospital, the first thing I noticed was that it was very clean and the front desk staff was very friendly. That good first impression quickly went away when I was brought back into the room by an assistance by the name of Natasha. She smelled like smoke and was very abrupt and rude. She kept cutting me off when I was trying to speak and she was very rough with my dog. I had never in all my years of going to veterinarians with my pets, seen an assistant man-handle my animal the way she did. The gentleman Doctor I saw, who I believe was the owner or head doctor, was very nice and gentle with my dog. After the exam and reviewing my previous vets records, he insisted on doing another x-ray. The assistant gave me an estimate for the xrays with sedation and bloodwork. My other vet had no problem getting the xrays without drugging my dog. My dog was also only 3 years old. I saw no need for bloodwork. When I declined these services, the doctor pushed me a little harder, emphasizing the importance of all of these things. When I declined again, he had a completely different attitude toward me. I felt like he was trying to guilt me. He kept saying "If it were my pet, I would do all of this". He also tried to push acupuncture on me, which I feel would not have helped my dog any. I took the estimate back to my normal vet, and they agreed with me that all of those things were unnecessary, especially considering the acl tear had already been diagnosed. This vet hospital seems really nice but it seems all these people care about is taking your money. I would never go here again! read more

Yellow Springs Vet is by far the most compassionate and accommodating group I have experienced. Our Abby, an Australian Cattle dog mix, was difficult at best. We, as old school (no babying) pet owners, were probably almost as difficult. The technicians and vets were flexible in the way they treated Abby. For example, she required muzzling if they performed any service in the examination room or near her face. Rather than muzzle Abby, they walked her on the leash as they performed these services. She behaved better without us, outside the confines of the exam room. They observed, flexed, and found a win / win. I am writing now because we recently had to put our old and sick Abby to sleep. True to our previous experiences, everyone at the vet's office was focused on how to make this as comfortable as possible for Abby, as well as for us. The personal feelings they felt toward Abby were genuine, they extended care and love that were equal to our feelings. I am grateful for the compassion they extended to Abby and us. read more

I am a first time puppy owner and called the clinic at 7:55PM worried about my pups heartrate. The office stayed open past their normal business hours and Dr. Barnard handled Woodrow with such patience and grace. To be honest, she handled me better than the dog! She was so kind and compassionate about my worries and anxieties. I had my well-pet checkup a day and a half later. When she walked into his exam room, he hopped right up to her! The office staff is incredible with Woodrow and made me feel completely at home! Thank you to Olivia and the staff for following up about Woodrow's issues with not only JUST me, but his dad too! Yellows Springs Veterinary Clinic is really good at squeezing every last penny out of you. The staff and vets are very friendly and the place is clean. But underneath it all, they are just used car salesmen. We recently moved towns, so we needed a new vet. I brought my dog in a few times, including for his annual checkup. At each visit, all they wanted to talk about were his teeth (his teeth are fine, by the way). I understand about dental hygiene, but it's clear they make a lot of money with their dental procedures because they push them endlessly and give you the "If you get it done within 30 days, it's x, y, z - so don't delay." WTF? It should cost what it costs! Don't pressure and rush me. Anyway, they guilt you if you refuse any of the gazillion things they want to do to your pet (a healthy pet). But, the real shocker was when I brought in my cat for the first time. The context is that my elderly cat had a chronic illness and was on his last days of a long battle with cancer. He was clearly close to his deathbed. He seemed so miserable, in pain and emaciated that I was finally considering putting him to rest. I scheduled an appointment to just discuss it with the vet, since I'd never done that before and I also wanted to to find out if there were other options for making him comfortable. Mind you, the cat had stopped grooming because he was feeling so badly, so I also bought them a very dirty looking cat. I explained the situation to the vet and tech. This cat had weighed 11 pounds when he was healthy - he was down to 5 !! Skin and bones. But the vet thought nothing of his weight and the assistant even said "his weight is normal." Umm, maybe some cats' normal weight is 5 pounds, but, if this is the first time you see him and I tell you he used to weigh 11 pounds before, you should see that having lost more than half of that is a BIG deal and NOT "normal" for this particular cat. So I bring up the issue of me struggling between putting him down or just finding something to make him comfortable. The vet pressured me into a bloodwork panel (over $200) before she could "consult" on the matter, even though I brought all his previous records that confirmed his chronic illness and the cancer. Even then, I decided fair enough that she needs to run a test before putting down a new pet to her practice, so I wasn't TOO upset about that. Then the vet decides she's not interested in that conversation anymore and instead wants to talk to me about my dying cat's teeth. I am not kidding!! She went on and on and on about his teeth and how I should schedule him for a cleaning. I was in absolute shock and wish I had a photo of his condition so that you could understand the absurdity of her giving a crap about his teeth at that moment. I was polite, but upset and left with my cat when the visit was over (minus well over $300 for the visit and the blood work) with no better grasp on my current dilemma than i had walked in with. The vet called me the next day with the abnormal blood results, told me I could give him some sort of liquid supplements and then brought up the teeth again. My cat died mere days later (with a terrible last 12 hours, which angered me to no end because he may not have suffered those hours had this vet done her job). Needless to say, I won't be going back there to bring them my dog again. It's not just important how they treat pets and owners when all is well, but end-of-life issues matter and they did not do right by me or my poor cat. It was truly absurd how they handled it. And, ultimately, it was cruel, because there is no way that she was under the delusion that a cat in that condition could even handle a tooth cleaning, much less that it mattered at that point. And, if she DID believe that, then she's totally incompetent. I've heard other people say they like this place. And, they do seem good on the surface. And maybe their skills are good once they get off the pressure tactics and perform a procedure. I wouldn't know. How could I ever trust anything they would tell me about my dog and any needed treatments when I experienced such an extreme case of them following their sales plan when it was grossly inappropriate to do so?!! They need to stop acting like used car salesmen and get back to a more caring stance and a non-financially abusive approach that their patients care. Sadly, I don't think this is an exception. It seems to be the way veterinary care is going. Beware! read more

This review is long overdue given the exceptional care my dog, Gus, received here for over 10 yrs. Gus was seen by each of the veterinarians on staff, although Dr. Barbour was his primary vet through the years. The YSVC staff are warm and caring, and the facilities were always clean and well maintained during our visits. Prices at this clinic are high, but as the saying goes, you get what you pay for. I married in 2013, and Gus and I moved to join my husband in southern MD. After having Gus to several veterinary clinics local to my new home, I became frustrated with what I felt was substandard care. Once it became clear that my pup wasn't just aging but possibly seriously ill, I decided to drive him back up to Frederick for a second opinion. Dr. Barbour was out on medical leave, so we saw Dr. Ruppert. I couldn't have been happier with the gentle yet thorough exam Gus received during this visit. It was confirmed that Gus had kidney failure. Dr. Ruppert thoroughly explained all of our options- change of diet, supplements and possibly an abdominal sonogram. We never felt pressured into any of the offered treatments. When I asked about Gus's teeth needing to be cleaned, Dr. Rupert indicated that given Gus's age and current health he would not recommend the procedure. Dr. Rupert also cautioned against what he felt were drastic (and prohibitively expensive) treatments for kidney disease in pets such as dialysis. We left fully understanding how the disease would progress and all of the options open to us. When it was time to say goodbye to sweet Gus, I was happy that staff at YSVC were available to help us through this difficult time.
