The complexity of this particular case started with Reacher not showing the textbook signs of gastric dilatation-volvulus, (GDV), or commonly known as Bloat: no distended belly, no retching, no drum-like sounds when tapped. Something to note, bloat is a life-threatening condition that often presents with vague signs and progresses rapidly. Instead, Reacher was drooling excessively, refusing food, and suffering from severe diarrhea. Sandy's intuition and evaluative judgment led to that crucial appointment. What followed was 48 hours of intense anxiety for our family, as we were out of town and Reacher's fate now rested in the hands of the exceptional team at Mason Dixon Animal Emergency Hospital. Surely, they are mistaken as the person they describe is not the Dr. Dodson we've come to know. My husband and I moved to Taneytown, MD, in 2016. We do feline rescue work, so we need an exceptionally good veterinarian who has affordable prices, is open long hours, and employs an outstanding support staff. After engaging the services of several unacceptable veterinarians in the local Maryland area, we tried the Gettysburg Animal Hospital. The Gettysburg Animal Hospital is owned by Dr. John Dodson, and he practices at it too along with five other highly skilled and talented veterinarians. Dr. Dodson has a wealth of experience and knowledge in treating both cats and dogs. We find him to be a kind man who truly cares about his clients and their pets. He often goes above and beyond treating our cats by explaining to us in great detail their medical ailments and how the prescribed therapy will help them. His practice is run efficiently, and he charges reasonable prices to his clients while offering top notch medical care. We've had the pleasure of Dr. Dodson and several of his veterinarians caring for our rescues these past three years. Based on our lifetime experiences with many veterinarians in several states, we find the Gettysburg Animal Hospital to be the best yet. I would not give this vet one star. My regular vet was out sick yesterday so I called Dr. Flake's…read moreoffice and they scheduled me immediately. Everyone was very nice and listened to everything I had to say regarding my dog's symptoms. Dr. Flake examined my dog including a rectal exam. She cleaned his anal glands and declared everything else seems fine but to make sure there was nothing going on we should do a blood draw. As I was concerned for my pet who had suddenly taken ill the day before I agreed. I was told I would receive a call plus an email with blood results to me and to my regular vet but the blood would take about two hours. Despite several calls I received nothing but the blood results - showing nothing wrong - after the office was closed for the day. I called this morning again leaving a message my dog was still no better and again I did not get a return call. Noontime when it was obvious he was having more difficulty I finally was able to reach my regular vet. Upon a rectal exam his comment was he could feel something in the gut and suspected a blockage. (The same exam Dr Flake did when she cleaned the anal glands.). A simple quick x-ray confirmed a blockage. From the moment I walked out of Flake's office I never received any communication except for the e-mailed blood result. My firm belief is it was far more profitable ($464.54) to do blood than take a quick and inexpensive x-ray. Her lack of communication with me, despite calls, only confirms my feeling. Shame on her. My dog suffered longer because of her poor care and she was most unconcerned plus I'm out a large chunk of money while I am on a fixed income. I do not mind paying for services rendered but I do resent feeling as if I were taken or a ride.
