Was in the mood to try something new and found this Salvadorean/Honduran restaurant. Has a nice welcoming feel and small store on the side to buy snacks , drinks. Got there around 12 and was easily sat. They have karaoke going which added a nice vibe to enjoy. Maybe it was our booth but it wasnt too comfortable, next time would opt for a table . Has a nice variety to try. Shared a pupusa Revulta and cheese was delicious and gooey. Also served salsa ,chips and beans w cheese to start while perusing the menu. I went with the camarones al mojo de ajo and also got the Cena de Bahia. I really enjoyed th e shrimp flavor . The rice was a little lumpy. Tortillas were great. The Cena had a alot to offer flavor wise. They do run a special monday -fri 4 pupusas -get 1 free pastelito. Would def return to try more and enjoy a cocktail . read more

I will say the restaurant is ALWAYS packed and so wait time is usually long as well as the service is hit or miss depending on who you get but THE PUPUSAS ARE SO GOOD AND WORTH IT!! Do yourself a favor and make sure you come here! While it is busy and loud, it is a welcoming environment with mouthwatering food. The portion sizes were much larger than my guy and I expected, and we couldn't get enough of any of it! I'm not sure how much impact this is going to make while reading this, but I LOVED the beans that the chips came with. I want you to understand that I have never in my life liked these kind of beans. I wish I knew what they do differently so that I could make this myself. Foodwise, my guy and I split a Cheese with Loroco Pupusa (flavorful and really stuffed, which was appreciated), Ceviche de Camaron (refreshing, citrusy and perfectly balanced in flavor. Honestly, it didn't even need the tostada to be enjoyable), and Plato Tipico Hondureno (I was obsessed with the chicharrones because it was very different than anything I've ever had before and I would honestly say better. And the plaintains were cooked perfectly.) I would absolutely get everything again! My guy and I couldn't stop raving after each new bite we had. Best pupusas I've ever had. Full Stop. But don't go on a night I want to go. I've yet to have a server who spoke English. No complaint, just a recommendation to brush up on your spanish. "Dos chicharron pupusas por favor" will get you by. They are very patient with my awful Spanish but I try my best. I order a chili and cheese and a chicharron. I like to get the arroz masa but traditional is great as well. They also have salsa that appeals more to my pallete than the traditional fair served with pupusas. I placed a pretty large order over the phone and was pleasantly surprised when the bill wasnt unreasonable. We really wanted pupusas and our regular place was closed on a Monday so took a chance coming here. So glad we did because the pupusas were huge, really tasty, and filling. The curtido has a unique taste with the oregano and sliced jalapeños and were the perfect topping. The salsa was also light but still flavorful. I had been on a small "no-food" diet for the past 2 weeks, so when my fast was over, I felt a strong craving for a certain food: papusas. While I have not ever had pupusas in my life, the craving was already there. Within a quick Yahoo search, this restaurant, Catrachos, came up. I got my clothes on (with a noticeably smaller waist) and headed out the door to satisfy my craving. This restaurant is located on a strip mall. Parking was easily found right in front of the entrance, something much needed when the weather is horrid. There were many items for sale in the front of the restaurant, but I skipped through, ready to end my starvation with a papusa or two. We were seated kindly by the wait staff. Since I do not appear hispanic, the waiter/waitress both gave us plenty of time to browse the menu. One man was considerate enough he came out with a picture menu so I knew what I was getting my stomach into. I decided on ordering not only a pupusa, but also some birria tacos with consume. Let me tell you, the tacos were WORTH IT. I have been to Los Tapatios before (well-known for their birria tacos), and this was much more affordable and well-made! The consume was a bit thick, but that just means more flavor less water...duh. When the pupusa came, I was already stuffed. I tried the chicharron, cheese, and bean pupusa. There was an option for corn or rice flour(?) for the outside of the pupusa. I preferred the corn. The rice was chewier and had a different flavor. They bring out a bucket of pickled vegetables (Curtido - as I learned from a Yahoo search) and a sauce for the pupusas that is not spicy. Really TASTY. To top off the happiness I experienced with this place, they gave chips, salsa, AND refried beans FOR FREE! The BEANS!!!!! Ugh, I have to come back soon. Well, this is now my new spot for pupusas and I will be coming back many, many, many times. While Salt Lake has fallen from the burgeoning food mecca pre-pandy and not quite made it back up, with surrounding areas drifting much more distantly (yay chains?), places like this are good reminders of how very fortunate we remain. Yes, it may require a bit more searching and more effort, but short of making the arduous trek to either Boise or Vegas, if you're wanting Honduran food, there is an amazing version of that right in our backyard...yes, the parking sucks and that strip mall has been borderline sketchy for the past 3 decades, at least. That's not really why you're going, though. Hopefully, you're going for the food, because you want to try something new and expand your horizons a bit and here, you can not only try Honduran food, but also that of El Salvador as well. For me, I had the super baleada, a couple of empanadas, and almost every single pupusa they had. The baleada was the real star, the chorizo and egg with an excellent flavor combination. The entire thing is like a gigantic soft taco, almost, if you use one of those larger tortillas from the molcasalsa places and you should absolutely get one of these if you're going. The pupusas varied a bit. The pork and the pork and beans were the ones I liked best, with the cheese being something that was ok, but not something I'd order again. The bean pupusa was also pretty solid. For the empanadas, they had banana in the batter (I imagine this is one of the regional differences respective to Honduran food), which was interesting with the cheese, but worked much better with the bean. The bean, interestingly, reminded me a bit of the sweet red bean paste you might find in a sesame ball by way of Japanese mochi or the Korean and/or Chinese spinoffs, but definitely had its own, much more savory, identity. It was definitely a delightful experience. Inside, there is also a selection of imported snacks and sundries, if you're interested in any of those. I got a few and didn't find them a huge departure from much of what we have normally, but it was still interesting to see the varying approach. While I tried a solid sampling, there is a lot more of the menu to work through. Overall, this was a highly enjoyable experience and if you're a food adventurer, this is a must on ye olde radar. First off, some advice- order ahead. I thought I'd just order takeout in person and wait a little and go but even with the restaurant nearly empty (I only saw customers at one table), it took 45 minutes to get my food after I ordered it. They said it would be 25 so keep that in mind as well. Besides that, everyone was nice. They had a chair for me so I got some reading time in. And the Pupusas were good. I got the shrimp and cheese and the bean and cheese and tried some of my friend's steak and cheese. I liked the flavors but I think they are intended to be eaten with some sort of topping because they were a little dry? I had a favorite Honduran place in Houston that I frequented but this place actually topped it! I came here with my sister inlaw from Honduras and brother who served in El Salvador. I got a pupusa, balleada, and pollo con Tajadas and it was all so good! The pupusas were some of my favorite! The balleada was very similar to my last favorite place but was much more expensive. I've been here quite a few times and love the pupusas and baleadas sooo much. The last time we went, we splurged on a parrillada . It said it served 4 but we didn't believe it. Can we say authentic? This place is delicious! I had to try a little bit of every. Don't judge me! lol Started with the Carne Asada Plus, continued with a Pupusa Revuelta, and finished with the Empanadas de crema. Everything was delicious! Now with that being said the beans had the most amazingly authentic flavor! The only thing I wasn't a fan of was the Butifaras sausage which were a little overcooked for my taste but I'm a not big fan of those regardless so I don't hold it against them... I spotted this eatery a month or two ago when I was in the neighborhood and made a note to come back and try it when I had the chance. Well, as luck would have it, the chance came up last week and found myself on the doorstep. As you walk it, you might not see the seating area for just a second. There were just a few moments before I was sure I was in a restaurant, as the front counter makes it look like a market, but then you look up and over to see the restaurant. I was seated immediately and given chips, salsa, and beans. My buddy was late joining me, so I got to explore the massive menu while I waited, and then check out the large assortment of hot sauces at each table. Soon enough, we were both there and ordered. He got the tacos and I got the Super Baleada. Think of a baleada as a lazy burrito---just folded over, not rolled. Or think of it as a very ambitious quesadilla, full of things and folder over on itself once. It's actually a traditional Honduran food and this one was full of goodies like avocado, cream, and I added chicken. Delish! I added an empanada (not the Argentina kind) that was made of banana outers and cream inners, with lots of sugar. I dug it. The tacos were more like taquitos, as we know them here in the US, but they were all eaten so I assume they were good. Service was friendly. Our server spoke perfect English, but there's lots of Spanish spoken in the place. It's actually a pretty nice spot--not fancy, but not a dive--and with such a menu full of seafood, Honduran food, El Salvadorian food, and lots of Latin flavor, you're going to have to try the spot several times before really getting feeling like you've gotten to know them. read more

We ordered a Parrillada, huge servings, enough to serve at least four people, it sure looked delicious. Unfortunately, it didn't taste delicious. The meat was very interesting, very chewy, tasted horrible almost like chemicals, shrimp was well done and tasted funny too. The pupusas were flavorful, but a little too greasy than what I am use to. Shout out to West Valley City, UT and all of your seriously grubbin' ethnic eats! Another hotspot I discovered is Catrachos Restaurant ( @catrachosrestaurant.utah ). They serve Salvadoran and Honduran food, from scratch. When you walk up to the restaurant, it almost looks like it's just a little store, so just walk inside and you'll be warmly greeted and seated. There is a bit of a language barrier, but don't fret, because several of the employees can speak English. They will help you out. The service is most excellent. The food is out of this world! I love how fresh it all tastes. It's all made from scratch, there's even a sign that reminds you to be patient, because their preparation takes time ~ yes! All about that life!!! There's also a bar and mini-shopping area, towards the front, where you buy some El Salvadoran mementos or desserts and drinks, to go. This is a really popular place, because I got there at close to 5pm, I was the only one there, then the whole place filled up instantly! The Pupusas used to be the best I have ever tasted in Salt Lake. I visited on August 16, 2023, and the pupusas were not the best anymore. They used another type of cheese. Additionally, beware, so you are not deceived, they charge you a tip already, but they don't give you your detailed receipt. They only give you the total and ask for a tip again. My group of 8 paid double tip and when I asked them about it, I had already paid. I don't mind that they already charged me for the tip but it is deceiving when they don't give you your detailed receipt, and ask for more tip again on the receipt that you sign. It doesn't get much more authentic than Catracho's. From the food to the décor to the staff, everything is genuine and wonderful. My friend and I were greeted promptly, offered hand sanitizer and led to a table. Our server appeared quickly and gave some suggestions and took our drink orders. We decided to try several appetizers so we could get a taste of everything, which I would recommend. There's so much to try, why lock yourself in to one selection? Over the course of our meal (food continued to pour in, it seemed), we enjoyed fired plantains, pastelitos (my favorite), a pork tamale, and papusas. I'm sensing some alliteration here, but that was not our intent. Anyway, everything we ate was remarkably good. Fresh ingredients, flavors that stood on their own, but also paired nicely with each other and it was all unique. Nothing bland or boring. My order was a takeout. I used to go to Pupusas el don, and it's not a great place, so I thought I'd try finsing somewhere new to eat pupusas. This place was sooo cool when I enetered. The ambiance felt authentic and fun! The staff was super nice. The lady at the register was your typical courteous Latina. I loved it. I don't know if they spoke much English bc we only communicated in Spanish. I got an order of 8 pupusas and a plate of plátanos (fried plantains). All of it was delicious. The pickled cabbage that came w the meal was OUTSTANDING!!! I could eat out alone it was soooo good! The plátanos were made just right!. The cheese used in the pupusas was different. I can't pinpoint what type it was, but I liked it! The sour cream that came w the plantains was Salvadoran and delish! Came here for a kind of brunch! My husband is familiar with Honduran food and we thought we'd give this a go. It was fairly busy on a Saturday around 11:15am. Nice table set up and a bar area, some of the kitchen prep area is visible. Our waiter was good, but he had a lot going on. It gave us plenty the of time to chat and stuff. We had an imported banana soda drink from Honduras. It's was good, very sweet! The menu is large, it's difficult to decide what to get. The chips and salsa and bean dip they serve is great. I truly loved the bean dip a lot, it was very flavorful and had plenty of salty taste! We ordered our food, the menu mentions it taking more time than other restaurants and such because of making things by hand, but the wait really didn't seem long. Food was delicious! I feel like the value is worth the price for sure. Baleadas were great, and the pupusas were as well. I enjoyed the salsa they served with the pupusas, but the cortido (pickled cabbage) was not my favorite. They have shirts and bags imported, chips, they do breads. This restaurant is more than just that. It's a party! There's always someone singing karaoke (Maybe they pay folks to do that? I'm not sure even to this day). Some may find this strange but to my family and I it makes the experience fun and exactly what we're looking for on a weekend night. Many more pupuserias are pegged as having the best pupusas in SLC and whoever is making those calls is very, very wrong. But maybe this is good because it means more 5-star pupusas for the rest of us. :) They truly are the best in the valley. Service is stellar and we always have a great time here. My husband lived in Honduras for a couple and years and since he has come back he has missed the food. We have tried many places even out of out of state and this has been by far his favorite. He has stated that the plain baleadas is the most authentic! They have great portion foods and not just Honduran food. Their menu consists of other latin american countries as well! The place was up to date and clean from what we could see! Also they had plugs on every table so if you needed to charge your phone you could! They also have live events so you should double check! The only reason why i didn't give them 5 starts is because our server was pretty slow and forgot some of the things we order. However though this will not stop us from coming again. read more
