THE BEST MOLE I EVER HAD. I got the mole coloradito and it was AMAZING. I never had anything like that mole sauce before. Wow, it was so smooth and all the flavors blended so well together. I ate more of the sauce than the carnitas itself. I could eat that mole sauce like soup. The corn tortillas were freshly made and the refried beans were really good. The portions were huge. I took some leftovers home and ate it the next day and it was still good. We got the guacamole as an appetizer and they give you A LOT. It looked like they used 3-4 avocados. It's also freshly made and the chips that came with it had some seasoning and it tasted good with the guac. This is a must go-to place if you are visiting SLC for the first time. You won't be disappointed!
Been here several times, great Mexican food, before heading up to park city make sure y oh stop by, friendly staff and great food.
We just was here while on vacation. Straight from the AirPort we drove here (maybe 15/20 minutes). The restaurant was very cute and surprisingly big interior. We felt very welcomed as the customer service was great. I had a table of 6 and we were all satisfied, including 2 kids. Only thing i wish was that my chimichanga was a little crispier but it could have been the sauce! All in all we said it was delicioso! :) thank you thank you
Very disappointed on second meal at this restaurant. Brenda our server was terrific but food not so much. My husband had tostadas, chili con queso he enjoyed both!! I had tacos à la Iguana and did not like them at all and strawberry lemonade. I also ordered my favorite dessert in the world fried ice cream and I was so disappointed.... It looked like an ice cream burrito and it came with a knife. All the correct ingredients but to hard to eat,.....I wasn't appealing. First time I have ever had to wait outside a restaurant and be escorted in
Old school, almost "dive bar" atmosphere. I am told there is always a wait to get in, so I will try to make reservations next time. The food was worth the wait. We had a fairly large group and nearly everyone loved their food. (One person was underwhelmed by the fish tacos, but I think that's because it was swordfish, and that's maybe a little unexpected in a fish taco. ) The mole sauces, I believe, are their specialty, and there are a number of choices, and all the ones we tried were very good. I will definitely keep them on my "to do" list next time I visit Salt Lake.
I honestly thought Red Iguana was overrated but I did give it a shot and honestly it's one of the best Mexican restaurants in Salt Lake. Highly recommend and will be back.
Still one of top 5 places to eat in the entire US...that I have visited to this point of course! This time I tried the Gringas, I mean the spice of the protein with the sweetness of the pineapple all wrapped up so snuggly and ready to pick up and eat...AMAZING! Still and will always be a go to for me when in SLC!
Get here early because this place has a waiting line on the weekends. We got there at 5 on a Friday and got seated immediately. The place gave off a family friendly casual vibe. The waiter was pleasant and took our orders. Before we could hardly finish our chips and salsa the food was being placed in front of us. I had the Enchiladas Suizas and it was very good. Different from the typical chicken enchiladas I get most places. The sauce is a bit sweet. I liked it. The portion was generous (2 large enchiladas) rice and beans. I left stuffed and smiling. Overall, I liked this place and would eat here again.
We have been going to the Red Iguana for years, then all sudden popularity grew as a little known show Dinners Drives and Dives showed up and pit this restaurant on the map. Now more than the locals know about this place. Also due to popularity the restaurant now has multiple locations. Unfortunately with popularity and growth, I feel the quality of their food has gone down hill. We ordered their guacamole and felt that it was just ok: we felt there was some fillers in it as it didn't have pure avocado taste plus lacked flavor. The mole is good as ever, but the amount of protein served with mole has dwindled. We had so much mole, that we needed more meat to accompany it. Given the restaurant was busy on a Thursday, we felt that lacked enough service. We had to wait so long that I didn't get dessert. As for Ambiance, the decor consists of bright colors, posters that have been on the wall for a while and tight tables. This is not a place that you come for a quiet romantic dinner.
Our first time in Salt Lake and we stopped by this place based on a recommendation from a friend. It did not disappoint! It was packed with people and a big wait to be seated which to us is a very good sign of a good restaurant. We loved everything we ordered! We are from SoCal so we're a little wary about trying o it Mexican food in Utah but it totally hit the spot! Would return!
This place was recommended... you pull up and it looks like a hole in the wall type place, which bodes well! The menu is vast! Lots of options, so I'd think anyone could find something they like!! Chips and salsa are provided! Salsa had a nice flavor and kick!! Wasn't sure what I wanted so I just took a gander at one of the favorited items! I got Puntas de Filete à la Nortena. Boy did it hit the spot! The flavors are incredible! It's spicy, but so enjoyable. I'm not sure how you eat it, but I put it in the corn tortillas with refried beans. I would eat this dish again and again! Service was quick and friendly! Oh and the margarita, while small, was tasty! Not question if there was alcohol in it. Def a good compliment to the meal.
From the time we sat down, the vibes were amazing. The chips & salsa were delicious and are unlimited. I ordered the chicken fajitas and the portion size is amazing. I love how they were big strips of chicken breast and the marinade was delicious. The rice had good flavor as well. My only complaint is that the flour tortillas are very large in size. My friend ordered the cheese quesadilla and liked it and her bf got the cheese enchilada with red sauce.

After spending nearly a week on the river in Utah, Red Iguana was our last stop before heading to the airport and home--and what a way to finish the trip. I knew they were famous for their mole dishes, so there was no question that I was going to try one. It absolutely lived up to the reputation. Rich, complex, packed with flavor, and unlike the typical Mexican food you find just about anywhere. After six days of rafting, camping, and eating along the river, sitting down to a great meal at Red Iguana felt like the perfect return to civilization. Great food, great atmosphere, and a fitting Utah send-off before flying back home to Pennsylvania. If you're visiting Salt Lake City, especially if you've never really explored mole before, Red Iguana is absolutely worth the stop. I know it'll be on my list the next time I'm in town. read more
It's worth the hype for sure. We went around 3pm so there was not much of line but the restaurant did fill up quickly by the time we left around 4:15. Food was great, so different Han the Mexican food we had before. If you are overwhelmed with their giant menu options, trust the yelp "poplar dishes" tab. We did and were pleasantly surprised! read more

Well, this is a little gem of a restaurant in Salt Lake City. I never would have come here without my friend's recommendation. The yellow and red building adds to the authenticity of this lovely Mexican restaurant. I tried the Mole Negro, which is the highly recommended item. It was fantastic. The serving was extremely generous, and I had leftovers twice! Our server was so kind and friendly. There's a parking lot adjacent to the restaurant. Great place! read more

Popped in a few weeks ago for some grub while driving across the country. Grabbed a mole sampler to try them, cool they fo that for free. Planned to get a special but the idea of extra fees to substitute moles was enough for me to just order the Killer Nachos. Saved me $$10 and filled me up just the same. Heaping scoop of guacamole was much appreciated. I enjoyed my visit, i arrived by 1115am and the place was full when i left at noon. read more
i've never seen a Red Iguana, nor a restaurant named after one, but it is one of Utah's best Mexican spots, and i peeped that through Yelp. we ordered takeout Day 1 here, and had it back at the Hotel i ordered online, through Toast system: i ordered Carne Asada à la Tampiqueña, while my boy got the Red Iguana plate! food was ready on time, 20 min after placing it, and i got a text confirmation too the inside ambiance is great and busy! you must wait outside once you arrive, and you'll be attended. the staff is nice and location itself does a great job keeping the Red Iguana theme seen throughout the Restaurant carne asada à la Tampiqueña (8.5/10) 10 oz steak, comes with cheese enchilada, side of beans, guac and your choice of tortillas. i got flour tortillas and medium well steak: food was amazing, steak little chewy: side spectacular. i enjoyed the fact we also got our own chips and salsa, and make sure you ask for all sets of utensils before you leave red iguana (6/10) popular dish, served with enchilada, a taco, a beef flauta topped with cream and guac, a chile relleno and a tostada. fasho, a large dish with a lot, but many misses: soggy flauta, salty meat on taco and food came very lob-sided. i actually enjoyed it more, but my boy wasn't the biggest fan overall, great experience to start off Utah, and we must come back to try their margarita slushies indoors! maybe Iguana makes good drinks too?? read more

I had heard a lot about this spot before we checked it out. This place is always packed lol We waited 40 mins for our table. The vibe of the place was very unique and fun! Every corner had something interesting to look at. Paintings, posters, stain glass lights, and more! The food was fresh and true to its description. I tried the days special Pistachio mole. It was wonderful! The chicken was slightly overcooked however it was forgivable. I did ask for hot sauce on the side but it was not spicy at all. If you are into non spicy aromatic foods, this is the go to spot. read more
I love it when a highly rated restaurant with over 5k reviews lives up to the hype!!!! This place is so cool! From the moment you walk up to the iconic sign, and you walk inside, you know you have arrived! At Mexican restaurants I usually order an Horchata to drink and that usually lets me know if the place is good or not. I ordered one and it might have been the BEST horchata I have ever had!!!! Perfect amount of cinnamon. Ordered the traditional Red Iguana enchiladas and went off menu. Asked for shrimp and they agreed to accommodate the request. They entered it as a cheese enchilada with a side of prawns and the server made sure they put them inside the enchiladas for me! Wife ordered the dinner salad with chicken and liked it. Love that they give you free chips and salsa as you are seated. Their salsa was really good, great spice level. Tony was our server and he was so attentive!!! Brought me a free horchata refill without even asking and came by another time with extra napkins. My only regret was we were too full for dessert! My girlfriend and I decided to visit Salt Lake City for a few days and came across this gem! We did our research before coming here so we knew a bit about the restaurant already. First off the food was wow! Absolutely delicious! This restaurant is known for their mole so coming here you have to try their famous mole dishes or else you would be doing yourself a disservice. Our waiter was so welcoming, attentive and friendly and even brought us over a sampler plate of their different mole for us to try before ordering! The restaurant outside may look small but once inside it is plenty spacious! Even with a full house it was not loud at all inside. Highly recommend this restaurant for anyone in the area! read more

I heard and read the great reviews Red Iguana has to offer. I believe they were also featured on Diners, Drive ins, & Dives. After we landed on SLC, the first place we had to try was here. We decided to get takeout on the following orders: Mango enchiladas Tacos don Ramon Caramel flan Cheesecake I ordered the Tacos don Ramon and it was not too bad. Unfortunately my wife did not enjoyed the Mango enchiladas. It was just too sweet for her. Only thing we enjoyed was the dessert. We came from CA and the taste of the food here was not as promising as we thought. Maybe if we ordered something else, the experience may be different. read more

Great Mexican food! Drinks are reasonably priced too. Service was excellent. Wait wasn't so bad, as it was a clear day. I wasn't a big fan of mole in the past, but I am now. Great that you can try different styles. I enjoyed my almond mole I think it was. Even better the next day! read more

My friend recommended Red Iguana so I tried it for myself. This place is where I had one of the best Mexican food ever. They have nice decors inside. Service was phenomenal. For some reason, we had two servers. The first one offered us a sample of each of the moles to help decide what to get. The second one was equally friendly and helpful. Peach margarita virgin was good. Puntas de filete a la norteña and chile relleno were both yummy. They serve these with your choice of flour or corn tortillas. I like their flour tortillas better. Their tres leches was different than what I am used to. Theirs looked like a cupcake and was drier than others that I've had. I was not a fan. Despite this, overall, this place offers great food and service. Would definitely recommend. read more
Service and food was all good. I suggest to make a reservation as this place gets very busy. We didn't make a reservation and waited 40 mins on a labor day Monday! We did see people with reservation get to be seated first. This was our first time trying the mole. Though we decided on the more orginal mole, the mole nergo, we found it a bit too sweet. Overall the mole for us was ok. It was not pur favorite. Everything else was great: burritos, chicken quesadilla, chicken fajita and guacamole was a bit of a kick. Get their deserts. The tre leches was really good. Not too sweet but very milky and flavorful. Also the flan. Firm and not too sweet. Do not skip desert. Our server was super nice and friendly. Coming from Southern California, I am spoiled by having many good and some great Mexican restaurants available to me. There are plenty of mediocre and bad Mexican restaurants in SoCal, too. But I never thought I'd find a good Mexican restaurant, or a great one, or an authentic one, in SLC. But here we are. I strongly recommend making a reservation. We arrived, stupidly, without a reservation, and there were probably 20 people waiting outside. Fortunately, it only took about 30 minutes to be seated. The drinks are delicious. I tried a margarita made with mezcal and it was smoky and delicious. But if smoke isn't your thing, skip this one. I also tried a Paloma and it was obviously freshly-made. It was very refreshing. They also offer non-alcoholic margaritas, with flavors such as mango and peach, and they are fantastic. The chips are really good. The salsa that comes with the chips is only mildly spicy but it has a great, roasted flavor. The guacamole is chunky and terrific (but pricey, as all guac is these days). There was no way I was not going to try one of the mole dishes and I went with the signature Mole Coloradito which comes with an absolute mountain of carnitas. I am not ashamed to say, I cleaned my plate. It is a great dish and full of flavor. The mango enchiladas come with a sweeter mole that tastes--surprise--like mango. It's sweet but not too sweet and it is another great dish. The enchiladas suizas, which come with chicken, sour cream, and avocado, is also on the sweeter side but still excellent. Honestly, I would be happy with almost anything on the menu. That is a sign of a solid restaurant. You want to return and try new things. Our server was terrific. He knew the menu inside and out and steered us toward the good stuff. Hey, there is great and authentic Mexican food in SLC. I'm a big fan. read more
The staff at Red Iguana was very friendly and patient. We asked a lot of questions about the different moles, and they answered them all--even brought us the mole sampler. We decided on the Mole Amarillo (almond mole, non-spicy) with carnitas. The portion was huge and packed with flavor. We also ordered the Tacos Don Ramon and a mango margarita. The tacos were perfectly seasoned, and I especially loved the shell, which paired beautifully with the slightly spicy steak. The mango margarita was outstanding, very fruit-forward, but with the tequila still shining through. For the amount of food served, the prices feel very reasonable. I also appreciated that the food didn't feel overly heavy. Many Mexican dishes we've had in SoCal, while delicious, tend to sit with you all day. Here, the flavors were bold but the meal felt much lighter. Overall, both of us really enjoyed this place and would absolutely come back! read more

It has quite a lot of gluten free options. There are dairy free options and the dishes that include dairy(mostly cheese) you could ask for it to not be added.

Yes, it is. They have a counter with stools. The staff takes real good care of you since they all walk right by behind the counter. Good team.
