We had a fairly large group and nearly everyone loved their food. (One person was underwhelmed by the fish tacos, but I think that's because it was swordfish, and that's maybe a little unexpected in a fish taco. ) The mole sauces, I believe, are their specialty, and there are a number of choices, and all the ones we tried were very good. We have been going to the Red Iguana for years, then all sudden popularity grew as a little known show Dinners Drives and Dives showed up and pit this restaurant on the map. Now more than the locals know about this place. Also due to popularity the restaurant now has multiple locations. Unfortunately with popularity and growth, I feel the quality of their food has gone down hill. We ordered their guacamole and felt that it was just ok: we felt there was some fillers in it as it didn't have pure avocado taste plus lacked flavor. The mole is good as ever, but the amount of protein served with mole has dwindled. We had so much mole, that we needed more meat to accompany it. Given the restaurant was busy on a Thursday, we felt that lacked enough service. We had to wait so long that I didn't get dessert. Chicken Enchiladas are a go too. The carne asada tacos--simply delicious. Shrimp Quesadilla was quite delightful. We had lunch at Red Iguana today in Salt Lake City. I picked this place strictly using Yelp and checking reviews. When I saw it had so many excellent reviews, we decided we had to try it. MY husband and I love great Mexican food and Red Iguana did not disappoint! MY husband had the chili verde with a side of rice. He said it was excellent. I got two chicken tostadas with shredded chicken. I loved my meal and honestly, there was so much chicken on them I should have only ordered one. The star of the meal for me was their homemade salsa! They sell it so you can take it home and if you go there, get some salsa to take home! I would have given them 5 stars but honestly I didn't for a couple minor things. We were not crazy about their guacamole and although our server was very good, there were a couple small things she did that made me lower my rating to a 4 star. I know this is minor but, I always order iced tea with very light ice. My tea came with more ice than tea and I asked her for more salsa for my tostadas which she never brought. Found this place from researching places to eat in SLC and Red Iguana did not disappoint! I asked for the mole sampler and enjoyed trying all the moles! I was there on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't crowded. Service was pretty quick and our server was really nice and explained all the mole samples to us. On a work trip my coworker brought me here, one of his favorite spots in Utah. The staff were immediately friendly, warm and welcoming. The bright colorful walls made me feel comfortable and I knew I was going to enjoy my meal. Brenda was absolutely the best! She was so knowledgeable and very attentive to everyone she was assisting. Coming from Southern California, I am spoiled by having many good and some great Mexican restaurants available to me. There are plenty of mediocre and bad Mexican restaurants in SoCal, too. But I never thought I'd find a good Mexican restaurant, or a great one, or an authentic one, in SLC. But here we are. I strongly recommend making a reservation. We arrived, stupidly, without a reservation, and there were probably 20 people waiting outside. Fortunately, it only took about 30 minutes to be seated. The drinks are delicious. I tried a margarita made with mezcal and it was smoky and delicious. But if smoke isn't your thing, skip this one. I also tried a Paloma and it was obviously freshly-made. It was very refreshing. They also offer non-alcoholic margaritas, with flavors such as mango and peach, and they are fantastic. The chips are really good. The salsa that comes with the chips is only mildly spicy but it has a great, roasted flavor. The guacamole is chunky and terrific (but pricey, as all guac is these days). There was no way I was not going to try one of the mole dishes and I went with the signature Mole Coloradito which comes with an absolute mountain of carnitas. I am not ashamed to say, I cleaned my plate. It is a great dish and full of flavor. The mango enchiladas come with a sweeter mole that tastes--surprise--like mango. It's sweet but not too sweet and it is another great dish. The enchiladas suizas, which come with chicken, sour cream, and avocado, is also on the sweeter side but still excellent. Honestly, I would be happy with almost anything on the menu. That is a sign of a solid restaurant. You want to return and try new things. Our server was terrific. We decided on the Mole Amarillo (almond mole, non-spicy) with carnitas. The portion was huge and packed with flavor. We also ordered the Tacos Don Ramon and a mango margarita. The tacos were perfectly seasoned, and I especially loved the shell, which paired beautifully with the slightly spicy steak. The mango margarita was outstanding, very fruit-forward, but with the tequila still shining through. For the amount of food served, the prices feel very reasonable. I think we got ours for 5pm 2 days before but then I stalked from time to time and luckily a normal dinner time res appeared so we switched to that. They seated us at a cozy table for two tucked away in its own little room, which was such a cute and intimate touch. Our perennial favorite for quality Mexican food in SLC. We started with killer nachos with great variety of chips, guacamole, salsa, beens and tomatoes, and especially the jalapeños. Then had the chicken chimichanga with mole Amarillo. The non-spicy chicken tostada and the enchiladas mole Amarillo. The daily special was the taquitos don doable with very rich Smokey flavor and spicy sauce. Service is always attentive and friendly.
