We went to Cattleman's to celebrate my brother's birthday and had a wonderful time. Our sever Robin was amazing and very informative. This was one of the best prime ribs I've ever had. Juicy and cooked to a perfect medium rare. My husband had the steak which was also great. They have an excellent whiskey selection and we all loved the baked potatoes and side salads. I had great service at the bar since I was alone as a traveler. Had the ribeye med-rare and cooked and seasoned perfectly. Side salad was nothing special but good. I stop at Cattleman's whenever I pass through and have tried everything on the menu. First, this is a steakhouse, South Dakota style! It has reasonable prices, few spices, and large portions. Veggies are an afterthought but are fresh and tasty. Second, the steaks are great and well worth the wait. Be prepared to wait. Third, service is not so great, it is reasonably ok but not great. You might feel forgotten. There are plenty of servers but they do not help each other out and are somewhat disengaged from patrons. Sit at the bar for slightly faster service, a fair share of restaurant gossip, and a view of employees standing around behind the bar. They would do well to improve bar service to be more customer focused, maybe have at least one person actively be a bartender? Fourth, I freaking love this place! Sure it has standard South Dakota service but the atmosphere is what a good reasonably priced steak house should be like: friendly, delicious, and reasonably priced! I don't mind the wait for a GREAT piece of meat! This should be a four or maybe five star review...But for the service. We were passing thru town yesterday and our hotel recommended this restaurant. We tried the Bacon Blue Burger and the Patty Melt. Neither were great. The Party Melt was on Texas toast, overloaded with onions and was so soggy that it slide off the patty. The bacon on the Bacon Blue burger was thick but rubbery. Made it impossible to chew. Worlds worst experience... Austin the "manager/owner" needs to be replaced. Out for an anniversary dinner with my wife and she ordered the Walleye Fingers and after taking 1 bite she pulled 4 long bones out of her mouth from the fish. We called the waitress over to ask to swap out for something else and she politely said that would be fine but they would still be charging us for the Walleye even though she had only taken 1 bite. We called Austin over and he basically argued with us saying that's the way they serve their walleye and all fish have bones. With our company, we're in the service and food industry ourselves and know that mistakes happen but he treated us like we were incompetent.... A much simpler solution would of been to just exchange for a different menu item and take the fish off the bill. We said we were happy to pay for a different menu item but he wanted to charge us for the nasty walleye that was filled with bones and not take it off the bill. We ended up paying the entire bill and walking out after Austin refused to compromise. We own a company and thrive on excellent customer service and have never treated any of our customers this way and would never of expected this from a local small town steakhouse. Very disappointing guys!! - we know a lot of people in this town and bad food service experiences spread like wildfire through this small town. Robin was an excellent waitress. We were seated right away at 5:30 on a Saturday by 5:30 it was full with people waiting. The salad was good and could add cabbage, carrots, onions off a tray they brought you. My husband had the prime rib which he said was good. He would prefer no au jour sitting in the plate. The Buffalo fries were crunch and good served with ranch. The best part was having a great waitress thank you Robin for making our meal extra special! read more

They do not take reservations so we had a thirty minute wait for a table. Then there was a large group so the service from the kitchen was very slow and our meals were not served at the right temperature. That said, our server was a gem. Best. Steak. Ever. Love this place! I visit whenever I am in Pierre for bird hunting and go a few nights in a row. They have awesome beef and execute perfectly. The beer list is great - 21 one cold ones to choose from and long list of bourbons and whiskeys. Sides are good, but the beef is second to none. read more

Basic steakhouse. Basic menu. Husband ordered the ribeye special, which was supposed to be fed a special corn diet to make the beef more tender. It was stringy and hard to cut and not very good. Taste was bland. They used very little if any type of seasoning. Basic baked potato was OK. It was a baked potato potato. Wine was good. husband had a bourbon and asked for bourbon and Gingerale and they sent up bourbon and ginger beer. Then was told they did not carry Gingerale at all. My sirloin was over cooked and unseasoned. My daughters was undercooked and had some seasoning. The others in my party said their food was okay. Sweet potato fries are soggy and mushy-I don't recommend. The build your own salads were nice. The waitress wasn't great. I had to hunt her down to get ketchup and steak sauce. I was driving across country. Tired. Hungry. And desiring an awesome steak and a glass of wine. I kept checking Yelp along 90 headed east and eventually Cattleman's showed up. I called ans Kelsey one of the owners answered the phone. I shared I was driving and asked if they would be open and willing to serve me if I arrived right as they were closing. Her answer nearly astounded me. Not only did she say yes, but she asked me to call back when I was 15-20 minutes out and she'd had the kitchen start my order. Incredible. About 10 minutes past their posted closing time I walked into the door and was greeted warmly but not just Kelsey but the entire staff. Fed an amazing filet. Food was bland and not good. We waited an hour and 15 minutes after we ordered to get our food. It came out wrong and had to be redone. Waitress was friendly but was slow to serve us. She didn't bring items as requested. We had to flag her down several times to get water refills etc. She did not check in with us on the wait time for our food and only told us they were busy when we asked. Not worth the time or money! We stopped here while traveling. We ordered burgers with sides. We waited over an hour for our food to come, and most of it was lukewarm. The person in charge offered one free dessert for our table of four for the slow service (although it did'n't make sense that they couldn't get it out when it was ready!). We declined as we really couldn't afford to waste more of our evening and needed to get back on the road. The ladies bathroom also smelled like a bathroom - not a fresh scent.
