When I adopted my dog I was so impressed with the lengths they went to before the actual adoption. They actually contacted my veterinarian to make sure the dog I used to have was current on all his vaccinations. There was a question about his Simparica Trio so they reached out to me for clarification. Then one of their volunteers came to my house to make sure it passed the dog friendly test. We had a visit with the dog we ended up adopting. It was all very thorough and I couldn't be more pleased with the whole process. They know their foster dog went to a loving home and I felt good knowing they wouldn't adopt out if it wasn't the right fit. Without a doubt and unequivocally the best dog rescue I've had the pleasure of working with in my life. they truly care about the well being of the dogs and making sure that each pup is placed in a forever home that is perfect for both parties. They are diligent and make sure that the pups go into the best homes. The volunteers and board members are all easy to get a hold of and interpersonally wonderful. Often times dog rescues have....some problematic personalities (I've noticed this over the years in working with multiple). That is not the case with CfC. This rescue spent weeks processing our application. We always immediately responded but there were several different 'coordinators' that had to reach out to us. We applied for a dog that had not yet been publicly listed because I knew the foster. We applied on 2/14, notified by email that our application was approved on 3/7 and found out on 3/11 that the dog was adopted on 3/8 or 3/9. He last round of shots were on 3/7. Every person we talked to said we were the first applicant and we would get to meet her first, then others would have the opportunity after us because once she was available and posted online, they expected many applications. I adopted Riley in September, 2020. The only reason I'm giving four stars instead of five is, I do believe that from the time of application submission to hearing from someone, should be shorter. That being said, it's clearly stated on the application that it may take 10 days to hear from a volunteer and that's exactly how long it took for me. Once I did hear back I was then put in touch with the foster mom, who was absolutely wonderful! We communicated on a regular basis. We met at a park, we then scheduled a home visit, and we then adopted the most AMAZING boy! All of that happened over the course of a few weeks, but that's not out of the ordinary at all. I was also told by the foster mom, right up front, there was another family interested in him and going through the process as well. So if they would have won out, that's just life, regardless of how far I was in the process. My husband and I finally decided to look into adopting a dog after losing both our Chihuahua's after they lived healthy happy lives for 15 & 18 years. We came across Cause for Canines on Facebook and thought it seemed like a good organization to adopt from based on all their posts. (Wish I would've found all these reviews before starting the whole process.) I submitted the application, completed the phone interview, passed the house inspection, and even had a meet and greet with the dog we were interested in adopting the day before Thanksgiving. At our meet and greet, the foster brought the dog to our house. When they arrived, my heart exploded because he was even cuter in person than in his pictures. My sister who happens to live in the same city we live in, stopped by with her dog to meet the dog we were wanting to adopt. As most people know who have had dogs, it can take time for dogs to warm up to each other. If we were outside of my home, the dogs got along great with each other. We took them on several walks around my neighborhood with no issues. However, my sisters dog became somewhat territorial once we were in the house and did growl and bark at the dog we wanted to adopt. My sister's dog who is a 14-pound Shih Tzu was kept on a leash the whole time. At no time during our meet and greet did the dogs have physical contact in an aggressive way with one another. When the meet and greet was over, the foster (Jen) gave us information on the next steps and what we would need to do to submit payment should we decide to move forward with adopting this dog. The next day (Thanksgiving), I received a text message from Jen saying we could set up and second meet and greet if we wanted. She said she did not want us to rush our decision because the organization takes pride in making sure the animals find their forever homes. She also asked if it would be a deal breaker if my sister's dog does not get along with the dog we are wanting to adopt. I let her know this was NOT a deal breaker because my sister and her dog don't reside in our home. Jen did explain that unfortunately you can't force dogs to get along. Again, this isn't something that I had any concern with because my sister and her dog do not live with us. She finished out the text message stating when we are done discussing this and again there was no pressure to move forward that we could chat about the next steps of the adoption process. At this point we were feeling good about everything and planned on setting up a second meet and greet. That same day, I sent Jen a text letting her know this. The very next day, I received an email from cause for canines stating there was an update made to our application. I opened the email and it stated "After reviewing your application for adoption and the notes from our volunteer, we do not feel this dog is a good fit for your home and due to the notes about the behavior of your sister's dog, we feel it may be a safety issue to place any of our animals in your home and we do not feel comfortable continuing the adopting process. We appreciate your understanding." After reading the email, I WAS COMPLETELY SHOCKED!! I immediately sent a text message to Jen the foster and of course I never received a response. I don't understand why Jen would discuss the next steps of adoption with us like we were going to get to adopt this dog only to then get an email saying there are supposed safety issues in our home because of a dog that doesn't even live at our house. Not only can we not adopt this dog, but they won't let us adopt any dog in their rescue. I sent email(s) to causeforcaninesrescue@gmail.com and info@causeforcanines.org hoping to get a response with some clarity. It's been 2 weeks since I've emailed the rescue and I still haven't received a response from them. So, I decided to send them a message via Messenger on Facebook. I answered questions I received very quickly but there was no further communication until a week later when I was contacted to schedule the home visit. We received glowing compliments from the volunteer who conducted it, who said she would submit her report that afternoon. A week and a half later, nothing, so I emailed to politely request status. Nothing. I emailed again today, still polite but more direct. Five minutes later, I received the following, "Thank you for your message. "Dog's Name" has been placed with another family". My follow up asking if we would've been informed if I hadn't continued emailing and the reason we were eliminated hasn't been answered. I doubt it ever will be. I've had two rescue dogs and a rescue cat. Despite having multiple health issues, both dogs lived to 14 because I provided them excellent care. The cat lived to 15. When she got cancer at 13, I paid thousands for surgery and treatment. She lived pain-free and happy for 2 more years before it came back. I love my animals to distraction and treat them like family. The application process can take some time since it's solely volunteer based and Covid has made things tricky, but they make sure dogs are perfectly matched with their furever family. Feel like this is some sort of scam. We applied to rescue a puppy. We have had animals our whole life and we care for them. They denied our application to recuse without a call, reason or conversation. We believe they must be funded based on the number of dogs they have and do not actually allow adoption, when dog counts are low. I wish I had read some of the reviews before bothering to apply. I've been wanting to adopt a dog and happened to find one that would be a good fit through Cause for Canines. They took weeks to even respond to my application, and their response asked me to provide a copy of my lease for proof that my building allows dogs. Even after explaining that my lease agreement does not include any information about what pets are allowed, they insisted they needed written proof. I also mentioned I planned to register this dog as an ESA so that dog restrictions would not apply anyway. I went out of my way to call my leasing office to make sure dogs were okay, and they told me to give the rescue the office number so they could call and confirm that. I forwarded the number to Cause for Canines hoping it would resolve the issue. Haven't heard anything since. After reading other reviews, it genuinely seems like this "rescue" has no interest in adopting out their dogs. There is no reason they would be this unhelpful and selective (childrens toys as a choking hazard? really?) if their intentions are to give dogs a good home. I have an amazing home, a huge yard to play in, and an incredible loving family who would love to adopt a dog in need but they denied me because they said I could not have purchased Heartguard for my previous dogs from an outside source other than a vet! Put in a heartfelt application for one of their pups and didn't hear anything for almost 2 weeks. They sent a canned email saying thanks, but no thanks without any explanation why. We included information about how much we are willing to invest in our pets (not just financially but we did have a cat with renal failure which required thousands of dollars for treatment. We gave her IV fluids everyday for almost 2 years). I did email them several times and no one ever did get back to me- which is completely unprofessional. They should not alienate good people who just want to help, especially for an organization who requires support from the community. Like many of the other reviewers, I would give this organization zero stars if I could. We wasted almost 6 weeks trying to adopt a dog from their organization, only to be denied due to "assumptions" after the home visit with the dog (we had a previous home visit with a member of the organization and passed with flying colors). The foster was at our home for over an hour and lead my husband and myself to believe we were good to go. 10 days after the visit, we received a denial. One of their reasons was due to my husband unlocking (and cracking open) our sliding door to our backyard so that the foster could take the dog out to use the bathroom. I didn't realize good manners insinuated a safety risk, due to an unfenced backyard. Shame on us to "assume" the foster would use a leash (which of course she did). Another reason was due to the foster spotting a potential unsafe item on a table that could cause harm to the dog, although this item was not in reach. This organization is the reason people shop instead of adopt. They treat you as 100% guilty until proven innocent. Only 1% would be lucky to pass. Save yourself time and heartbreak and go elsewhere. Wow. I wish I had researched this organization prior to wasting so much time with it. From all of these bad reviews, it's clear I'm not the only person who had a negative experience. After applying to adopt "the chillest dog in the world" (per the description on their website) and successfully completing the home visit, I was told that this particular dog requires an 8 foot fence (!). There were a few questions that came to mind (like why isn't this dog in the circus), but I chose to bite my tongue as I watched the dog appear all over the organization's social media accounts. (Maybe he was a mascot?) A few weeks of trying to find another suitable dog later, I started receiving condescending, passive aggressive, and unprofessional emails and text messages from representatives at Cause for Canines. I wanted to alert everyone else who's attempting to give a dog a good home. Look elsewhere. Anyone can make a website and pull dogs from the shelter and have a "non-profit". DO NOT waste your time or emotional energy with this rescue. They are unprofessional, unreasonable, and I do not believe they take the potential adopters feelings into consideration. My husband and I have 2 senior dogs (14 and 10) and wanted to adopt a senior dog both as a companion for our current dogs and add another dog to love and cherish into our home. We had never tried to adopt an older dog and never went through a rescue. A couple day's after I applied online for a 8 year old golden retriever/shepherd mix I received a text from the dogs foster mom. We decided to set up the meet and greet and we were so excited. My husband was busy closing off the acre fenced in back yard and it seemed like everything was going well. I should have realized looking back, when you can't speak to someone over the phone and all of the interaction has to be done by text or email so there is a "paper trail", there is something seriously wrong with how things are being done at this organization. I then get 2 emails that consisted of brief "we called your vet and you do not have a record of giving your dogs heart worm". In April of last year, I admittedly told the rescue by email, we had missed 2 heart worm applications in the winter and had our vet test our larger dog for heart worm and then purchased the heart worm Med at a local pet store because we had a coupon. Confused, I told them I didn't have a reciept for back in April from the pet store so I couldn't provide the proof they wanted. I receive an email the next day saying sorry you do not meet our standards good luck. Baffled, I contact my vet, and they said they had not written down in the chart that the vet gave us a hand written script to purchase the heart worm wherever we wanted. I then contacted the rescue again to say, hey I have proof of heart worm it was just an error and literally nothing...no response. Not even a "sorry it's too late" or a courtesy email. I contacted the foster mom again to see if she could tell me why no one was responding and I have proof that my vet just made an error in the chart....she chastised me for contacting her and said "it is inappropriate for u to contact me. Please contact the rescue". There are millions of dogs waiting for homes in this country and all parties within this organization was acting as though it is federal offense to miss a month or 2 of heartworm. It's not like we weren't concerned. We had frank tested and then the vet made an error and didn't write it down. Please do not adopt from this rescue. It will just hurt your heart. The sad thing is...the dogs are the ones that will suffer from this rescues incompetence. Since this incident I have spoke to a handful of people that used to volunteer for this rescue and they said they were the strictest and most unreasonable rescue they had ever worked with. Now my husband and I question even going the adoption route. I make my dogs food every day due to their health problems and I even grind vitamins with a mortal and pestal to put in my dogs food. We can walk to our vet and I take our dogs so often to make sure they are ok health wise. Everyday, rain or shine we walk our dogs around our cute little town. I have just had the exact experience as all of these other reviewers. I won't go into details, but I have been the proud parent of two other rescue dogs who both lived to be over 13 years old. This agency kept sending me question after question regarding my application. I answered all of their questions but apparently not to their satisfaction. I haven't been turned down yet but have realized that there are plenty of other rescue places and shelters around the central Ohio area that I don't need to go through Cause for Canines. I really feel sorry for the animals that are in the care of this organization. I strongly discourage anyone from wasting their time with this organization. This review is based on my experience looking for an adoptable puppy. While I was not able to adopt a puppy that I wanted, the experience that I had warranted me leaving a review. The website is very easy to navigate and is very understandable. The adoptable dogs have more than enough information to decide whether that puppy would be a good fit for your family. However, a home visit is completed just in case. Adoption fees are standard and they do not appear to be inflated for the small dogs like you see with some companies. Prices seem fair. My references were contacted immediately after my application was submitted. It was a very easy and comprehensive process that went very quickly. The puppies that I had wanted ended up being a restricted breed by my apartment complex, but the company offered to help me find a better fit for my family. A family member applied for a dog and received an email not even 24 hours later (which is not enough time a rescue should spend reviewing an application, contacting references, reviewing vet records, etc.) saying that they are moving to different applicants because our home "doesn't meet one or more of the requirements" and then listed about seven possible explanations but did not clarify which one. We have many rescue pets and also volunteer with a pet rescue organization. When reached our for further explanation, they failed to respond. There are so many other rescues that are professional and will speak to you directly instead of sending a general pre-written email with no other contact. I adopted a dog from Cause for Canines in the fall of 2019. After meeting my future pup at a meet and greet, I submitted my application for review. I received a phone call within the week from the adoption liaison, who also happened to be the foster parent for the dog I was interested in. She asked me some initial screening questions and was extremely pleasant and honest about the dog. The next day, I had my home visit. Again, the volunteer who visited was kind and clearly passionate about helping dogs find good homes. I was thrilled to hear later that week that I had been approved to move forward with the adoption. Throughout the entire process, the foster parents were so great to work with. It was evident they loved their fosters and wanted to place their dogs in the best homes possible. They were patient with me (I had recently lost a dog and was hesitant about whether or not I was ready to adopt another.) and went out of their way to help my dog feel comfortable in her new surroundings. Did I mentioned she was SO well trained by them? Once the adoption was complete, they continued to be resources to me, and I am so grateful. My dog is a perfect match for me. We don't know, because they didn't do us the courtesy of telling us why, despite that in their acknowledgement of our application they say "We will contact you with any questions or concerns." You receive a form "denied" email, and they give you a list of the most common reasons for denial. But they don't tell you what your specific reason was. You don't get the chance to clear up any misunderstandings, or to correct any false information they think they've found on you. We had a horrible experience with this dog rescue. After initially approving our application and doing a home visit, things quickly went downhill. The whole process became convoluted and unprofessional. They harass you via text and almost act like they're not even trying to get their dogs adopted. We finally decided to cut ties with trying to adopt from this rescue. We're going to go through the Franklin Co Animal Shelter (www.franklincountydogs.com) or Columbus Humane. I have a poor review of Cause for Canines. I want to make it very clear, the fact I was not provided a dog from this organization is not my complaint. I put in an adoption application via the encouragement of my veterinarian on 6/27/2018 fir a dog via a rescue group. I followed the instructions in a canned e-mail to send an additional e-mail to the specified e-mail address and let them know the name of the dog. That lead to a one world response e-mail that same day saying, "OK". No mention of the foster parent or additional contact information. I attended their adoption event at COSI that same evening. The dog I was interested in was not there, but I got to speak to someone about her and learned more. I expressed my sincere interest in being given an opportunity and to meet her. On July 3rd, I received another canned e-mail from the organization advising My application had been approved and to expect contact for a home visit. Dog had since been posted to their webpage as well as "available for adoption." The e-mail indicated it could be hours or days to hear someone. On 7/6/2018 after the July 4th holiday, known for an influx of dogs to rescues and shelters, asking if there is any word on the dog and my ability to meet her as this process is a two-way street? I heard NOTHING! Keep in mind, I have not worked with this rescue to understand their process. I go by what I read on their website and the canned e-mailes. I realize, I could be 1/100 applicants, but it would be nice to know where I did stand because my search for a companion was on hold until I knew the status of this dog. It's unfair to look into another dog if I had a chance of giving this one a home. I heard nothing back from the rescue. Not even a "going to look into it and get back to you." On 7/14/2018, 17 days after the initial contact, I went to another adoption event by the same rescue. At the time I was there, They had only one dog there and rest were via photos and their laptop. I asked for an updated on the dog. I also expressed how frustrating it has been to not have heard from anyone about meeting the dog. I was then advised a home inspection is required first, but yet, no one had even contacted me about that either which did surprise the volunteer working at the table that day since I was approved. She took down my contact information and advised she would look into it and have someone contact me. Again, NOTHING! On Tuesday, July 17th, it was posted to their social media page the dog I was interested in had found its fur-ever family. I cannot fully express the emotions, anger being one, as I felt as if I had been strung along this entire time. I didn't actually see the post until a week after it had been posted. Still waiting on someone to get back to me. Potential Adopters have feelings too. I was doing my part thru this process and to not get any tangible contact back from the rescue, was beyond frustrating. Had they told me the odds were unlikely due to the number of applicants, fine. But they told me nothing! I wasted all that time! Where is the consideration for the family in making that decision to adopt and what it takes on our end? The wait is a killer. I'm sorry, but this was totally unacceptable! There should be a very timely and tangible communication strategy in place, regardless of the outcome is good or bad for the applicant. Oh, I did check my e-mail, voicemail and text messages and I had no notification that the dog I put an actual application in for had been adopted. We all have lives, jobs and events that make our lives busy. It's part of the process and it is the organization's responsibility to see that their reputation is not at stake thru their foster parents and their inability to communicate with potential adopters. I recently applied to adopt a certain dog from this organization. Mainly because I feel in love with his picture and he needed a home with another dog and he loves to run and play. we live in the country with 5 acres and my 1-year dog loves to play with other dogs. After waiting 10 days the replied wanting to know exact details of my veterinarian record from my 15-year-old dog that had recently passed away and our current vet info. After I forwarded the info immediately. I again reached out 6 days later because I heard nothing. And then I was told he would not be a good fit because we don't have a fenced yard... No home visit no reference check. My heart was broken. Please go elsewhere. My dog now was a shelter dog and we were treated so well because they appreciated us for adopting. read more

So I would like everyone to know that wants to adopt from this organization is tough on applications. Most likely you will be turned down. Let me tell you a little about myself. I am 62 years young. have one dog a 6 year old Labrador, two cats age 10 and 9, two horses age 22 and 19, and two mini donkeys both age 11. I live on 20 acres have three dog runs, make my dogs food from fresh vegetables and turkey. She has all her shots up to date. She is heart wormed every month on Heartguard and Frontlined every month. She sleeps with me in my bed and we are home just about 24/7 And I was denied. My heart was broken when I heard this because I love animals and a dog has been denied a good home. Shame on you Cause for Canines. I hope you will re-evaluate your future applications a little better and give these dogs a chance at a good life. read more
