I'm talking about a favorite pet speciality shop, Captivating Canines. (See pictures) For about a year we'd noticed that the store was no longer at the corner of Main St. and Westerville in downtown Westerville. We were saddened to see it go because it had been a favorite shop to pick up unique Christmas and birthday gifts for pet owner friends and family. So, when we walked out the back door of Old Bag of Bones, we could see this new shop and decided to check it out. Ron, the new owner had bought the store but relocated just a short distance down Main St. Although he told me he wasn't a huge "BUCKEYE" fan, I was willing to forgive him of that small indiscretion as we continued to talk about the store and new inventory he had on display. He was very gracious and allowed us to walk around and take pictures of him and specialized, fun merchandise he had in the store to share with you. It is a very relaxed environment so you can casually take your time to look around. Many items are marked down 50%. I was equally impressed and appreciative that the shop was designed to be handicap friendly with ample aisle space that allowed me to take my walker to any place I wanted to go.

Every time we go in Captivating Canines, the owner is so friendly and helpful. We have a puppy and go there for most of his basic needs and some more we didn't know about. Today we had to get his second collar and a new harness. They have a great selection of bright and colorful and fun designed collars and harnesses. We always come away from there happy and in a good mood. Such a sweet little place. It's fun to shop in and not overwhelming, like the big pet supply stores. Definitely make a stop, it's fun just to stroll and I guarantee you'll find something unique!

Love this shelter. we got one of our first dogs here and have been back a couple times ever since!…read more this time there was a man in the cat part of the shelter that wasn't very friendly and just made us feel like we weren't really welcomed in there. my friend didn't know the rules and was having a cat sniff her hand and he very rudely told her not to do that and to ask the staff before touching them. which the reasoning was understandable, but the tone. a lot of people don't know which it's the workers job to remind them, not be rude about it. i love this place forever. my fur baby is from here. this one man will not change my opinion. They are one of the cleanest shelter around. all dogs and cats look very happy and healthy.

I wanted to go into one of the rooms to see a cat, when i asked he rolled his eyes and let me go into the room but made it very clear he didn't want my friends kid in there. what if she was looking for a cat? Do you want these cats to find loving homes or not???!! Lastly, what happened before we were just done. I had walked in the shy room twice, once by myself and once with my boyfriend. The first time i went in they left me alone i was just looking at the cats, didn't pet them if they didn't want to be pet. I respect animals and i can tell if a cat wants me to not touch them. the second time i walked in with my boyfriend and one of the workers followed us in there and got in my boyfriend's face saying "this is the shy cats room don't get in their faces" mind you we weren't even that close to them just looking to see everyone that was in there. he then gets closer and says "Im serious" like bro we weren't even doing anything besides looking and letting them sniff us. anyways, whoever was working at 12 today with the mask you were amazing and helpful. the other guy up front a little older with curly hair you were extremely rude and disrespectful to all of us that walked in. They make it absurdly hard to get a kitten. It honestly feels like they prefer the cats stay there…read moreforever rather than go to loving homes. The process was unnecessarily long, complicated, and frustrating from start to end. We were asked to fill out a form and provide an excessive amount of personal information, only for them to reach out 2 days later to schedule a meeting... which they canceled. Not once. Not twice. Three times. By the fourth attempt, we honestly should've taken that as a sign. When we finally made it to the Zoom call, we mentioned that we already have a cat, which we thought would help speed things up. Somehow, it did the opposite. We were told we had to submit our cat's vaccination records, and IF AND ONLY IF those were approved, we might be allowed to meet the kitten two weeks later, since she was in a foster home. At that point, we were done. We didn't send anything. Instead, we drove straight to the Humane Society. And what a difference. We walked in, met the most adorable kitten on the planet, petted her, filled out some basic paperwork, and were treated like normal, trustworthy people, not suspects under investigation. We walked out with our kitten in under two hours. This place was completely unserious, wildly inefficient, and a total waste of time.

I was given paperwork stating that Charlie was safe to be around children. Based on what ultimately occurred, I believe that paperwork was inadequate and misleading. At the time of adoption, Charlie was sent home on four Trazodone pills per day. I was told by the shelter's veterinarian Zac, that this medication was for depression and anxiety, and that it was okay to wean him off of the medication. When I followed that guidance and began tapering the medication, Charlie's behavior changed dramatically. He exhibited clear behavioral issues, became aggressive, and ultimately bit my daughter. Based on how quickly his behavior escalated once the medication was reduced, I believe the Trazodone may have been used to mask underlying aggression rather than disclose a serious behavioral risk to a household with a child. The police were called immediately. When officers contacted Franklin County Animal Control, the response was deeply concerning. The agency argued with the responding police officer and initially refused to send anyone out, even after being informed that a dog had bitten a child. Only after a supervisor was requested and the officer insisted that the dog be picked up immediately did they take action. This situation was mishandled at every level--behavioral disclosure, medication guidance, paperwork accuracy, and emergency response. Families rely on shelters to be honest and transparent so they can make informed decisions that protect their children and homes. That did not happen here. Charlie was euthanized. Based on this experience, I strongly do not recommend using this shelter.

We found a dog we wanted to meet and were told to complete an application unless we.were to go to a sponsored meet and greet, which there was one scheduled the next day, only be told the dog we inquired about doesn't do well around other dogs in that environment. Then why post that dog "gets along well with other dogs.." The post should clearly say " doesn't do well in highly stimulative environment" in order to attract the right adopter. Maybe that explains why they can't understand why the dog hasn't been adopted after 3 years.

These people donate their time and homes to these dogs. They're nice people with a great background in animals. This means though that they're doing this on their own time. So, yes, communication can be tricky sometimes. It took us a few weeks to get our pup. But once we got the ball rolling, they were very helpful and moved to get us our dog as quickly as possible. To start, you fill out an application online. Once approved, you can do a home visit. After the home visit, you decide whether it's a fit. Then, you just have to make sure the pup is neutered/spayed and up to date on vaccinations. They do all this for you, which is great! The fee is $250 which I think is very reasonable. They give you all the paperwork then and a full report on your dog to ensure success. Overall, so glad we found our dog through PAWS!
