If you want apple picking without the crowds and you don't enjoy overpaying for apples, you need to visit this beautiful farm. We were driving by on our way to another farm and we saw the sign that said .99 for a pound of apples. We decided to check it out and we call to get more information about times and days. It just so happened that a truck was driving by and encouraged us to drive up the road where this lovely lady welcomed us and showed us the way to Apple picking. We were told and observed that they also sell Christmas trees and they have reopened the apple picking this year. Long story short we had an entire orchard just for ourselves and a great time picking Golden delicious and Gala apples. They had more varieties but these were our favorites. Cash only but a great value! We got a bushel of apples for $20! You can't beat that! read more

Cavanna's Farm is a working farm and orchard that opened in South Glastonbury, Connecticut in 1903. It was founded by husband and wife Italian immigrants Paolo "Paul" and Madalena Cavanna. The Cavanna family immigrated to the United States from northern Italy in 1890. They originally settled in Brooklyn, New York. After saving up enough money, they relocated to Connecticut where they purchased the same piece of farmland that still belongs to their family today. The farm originally raised animals and farmed tobacco and hay. Beginning around 1960, Cavanna's Farm switched their focus to farming fruit. Throughout different times of the year, customers can pick their own strawberries, raspberries, blackberries, apples, pumpkins and even Christmas trees during the winter months. Today the farm is run by husband and wife Paul and Cathy Cavanna, their police officer sons John and Andrew, and daughters Kate and Liz. In 2018, the family started the Gray Granite Railroad on the farm property. Unlike other vintage steam engine railroad experiences found in the northeast, the GGRR is not located on a historic railway but rather a brand new one. There is currently one mile of new railway track on the farm where customers can ride restored vintage steam engines. Customers can ride different themed rides during the Easter, Halloween, and Christmas seasons. There are currently plans to extend the railway track even further. My family and I visited Cavanna's Farm yesterday for the first time. We wanted to pick some strawberries and we heard that Cavanna's had excellent ones. We spoke with owner Cathy Cavanna when we arrived. She told us that in the 60+ years that Cavanna's has been farming strawberries, this was one of the best harvests they ever had. As we walked through the field, we could actually smell the delicious berries. These were some of the biggest, ripest, juiciest strawberries that we've ever tasted. The field was so plentiful too! Within a very short amount of time, we had already collected four pounds of delicious strawberries. Although the trains aren't currently running rides, we all enjoyed looking at the beautiful vintage locomotives. We had such a fun experience at Cavanna's and we plan to come back when they're running train rides. Due to the current heat wave, this will be the last good week to get strawberries, so get to Cavanna's as soon as you can! Just remember it's CASH ONLY. read more

Always love the strawberry picking experience here. One thing that sets this farm apart is that they're open until 6pm which is awesome if you want to get your strawberry fix after work. The owners are kind and the strawberries were plentiful this week. There were so many ripe, juicy ones. The flavor is incredible--seriously so much different from the ones at the grocery store. I can't wait to have them for a healthy snack (and bake with them too)! read more

We've been there before and our first experience was fine so we thought another visit wouldnt hurt. Sadly, we uncovered some very uncomfortable behavior. We just started picking strawberries and all of the sudden the owner starts zooming to the entrance to tell a set of asian folks that they cannot pick strawberries due to the size of their group. There was only like 7 of them. Later, we find out the owner claims "those kinds of people rob strawberries" (which is crazy to profile any race) but the folks clearly were just tourist looking to spend money for a friendly activity. We politely tried to explain why this is a problematic comment and he proceeded to say "I don't give a shit" If you want to pay $$$ for mid-level strawberries to a racist owner. Go for it. There are better farms around. The strawberries at Belltown down the road were so much better anyway. read more

After coming to Cavanna's several times, I discovered that this business runs on racism and unkindness. Yesterday I witnessed John Cavanna turn Asian customers away from his business under the pretense of a "large group" policy. There were multiple groups of white customers picking strawberries when he rudely told the Asian group that they were not welcome at his establishment. He said that he "knows groups like that" and profiled them to be "thieves who robbed him blind." It was obvious that he was discriminating against these non-white customers. When other customers spoke up against what he was doing, he began swearing and making threats. After reading other reviews, I can see that this is a long-standing problem. You would be better off going to a farm that appreciates and accepts all of their customers. read more

Shout out to Cavana's Farm! We went strawberry picking there today and the strawberries were plentiful, large and luscious! Plus, the staff/owners were so friendly and helpful. I've never picked and had someone ask to make sure I was finding enough strawberries. This was a great experience and we will be back this week and in the years to come! Just read other reviews and all I can say is that I am Asian and the owner/staff could not be nicer or more welcoming. read more

Some of my favorite people! We bought our christmas tree from them, the price was amazing for the selection they have. All their trees are great. They also have the cutest family ran train. The people that own it are older so they do all sales over facebook. read more

Between the tree, 10-minute train ride with a stop at the "north pole", some snacks, and hot chocolate we dropped $276 in about 1 hours' time. Couldn't also help but notice that the owner is a bit rude with some of the responses to negative reviews and he likes to attack people on social media who question his pricing. Hate to break it to you bud, but your customer service skills are lacking and you're way too expensive. That's simply the truth. Price breakdown: $79 Cut your own Tree- standard tree nothing fancy $175- family of 5 to ride on the train $22- drinks and snacks- provided by a food truck, not Cavanna farms. You're also going to need to bring your own Vaseline as they don't seem to sell any on the property. In closing, we all can see the posts where you tell everyone how expensive it is to run and build a train. We understand. Just know that we also know that you chose to build the train, but the consumer gets to Choo-Choo-Choose (see what I did there?) where to spend our money. Next year, it won't be here. read more

It was such amazing experience to aboard the train to see Santa at his cabin. Everyone was wearing masks. They took a full precautions to prevent Covid. I can't wait to go to them next year. Went here for some strawberry picking. It might be a bit late in the season, or maybe not a good season this year, but there weren't very many GOOD strawberries. Lots of smaller strawberries. Reasonably priced, small and the staff is very friendly. read more

This place never fails to steal my Christmas cheer! Two years now I've tried to support local and have come here only to discover we arrived as they were closing for the season -- both times it was midday and Christmas was still two weeks away! So forgive me for not "checking the phone recording" as I was told. Not everyone wants a tree the day before Thanksgiving that comes down December 26. So I'm done trying with this place, and our support will go to another local community -- Colchester -- and Greg at Evergreen Acres. At least then I'll be sure to leave in the same holly jolly mood as when I arrived, and with a beautiful tree for the season! read more

Great amount of trees to select from but very expensive if you are looking for a small tree. I need 6 ft or smaller and they are the same price as an 8 ft tree. $69 dollars is way too much for any small 6ft tree! I only went here because they were open the weekend before Thanksgiving to beat crowds, and it'll be the last time I go there for this purpose. The woman taking money was kind but did not even consider negotiating a better price. read more

First time strawberry picking and I would say the experience wasn't bad. We stumbled across this place because another location was closed. The farm is in a terrible location. When driving in, you are unsure if you are berry picking or at a junk yard/construction site. However, the people were very nice. I thought there would be bigger strawberries but we got a nice variety. read more

Great experience picking berries here with friendly staff. My daughter loves the smaller berries in the front field as the flavor is more concentrated than in the larger berries near the back. I was looking for a fun activity with my 5 year old grandson and decided to go pick a few pounds of strawberries for a couple fresh strawberry pies. Four pounds to be precise as each recipe calls for 2 pounds. This was our first trip to this location. Very pretty spot however the owners/management don't seem comfortable having kids on the premises. I heard many admonishments from staff directed at kids such as " if you're done picking get out of the field, stay away from the train, keep your kids close to you". Anyway, I prepaid $16 for two containers that I was told would hold 2 lbs each. I filled each container to overflowing under the watchful eye of the man who sold me the " 2 lb" containers. I had the feeling sampling was frowned on but I could be wrong. On my way to my car a blonde woman asked me had I already paid which I found offputting. I was omw to the car so maybe she thought I was making my getaway with the goods or something. Got home and weighed my berries - one weighed 1 lb 11 ounces and the other weighed 1 lb 12 ounces. So after all we had enough for 1 pie and some for snacking. I felt swindled. Why not weigh, folks? read more

We wanted to go strawberry picking but didn't want to fight the crowds at some of the bigger places around. A friend recommended Cavanna' s and I am so glad she did! We were met by a really friendly teen who gave us boxes and showed us to a row all to ourselves. The berries were plentiful and yummy. We filled up a huge box and had so much fun!
