Then we walked down to the lovely tulip field to pick our own tulips. While there are only about 6 rows of tulips, they are absolutely gorgeous. You're also allowed to pick the bulbs and bring them home with you, so I can't wait to try growing my own next year. It's a great way to spent an hour or so picking your own flowers and supporting a local business. I'll def have to come back for if they do other food picking later on in the year!

However, the stars finally aligned this summer after he finally realized two things 1) We eat a ton (not literally...ok maybe literally) of vegetables year round and 2) He saw the diversity of produce one of his co workers' received each week from a CSA at Bishop's Farm last year. CSA programs provide a great opportunity that links the farmer directly to the consumer It's a great way to cut out the middleman, develop a relationship with a local farm and get weekly or or twice monthly fresh produce during the spring and summer growing season. Over the winter we signed up and paid a membership fee to buy "shares" for the spring and summer growing season. These membership fees do vary by farm and depends on things like production costs, what produce you receive, and growing season. Beckett Farm had the option of an early Summer Share and a Regular Summer Share. The early Summer Share ran from May to the end of June. Pick up throughout the entire season was on Mondays from 4-7pm. If they had "left over or extra" we had the option to purchase additional items. From the first week we knew that we had made the right decision - fresh asparagus, lettuce, radishes and beets were filled our first box along with lemon basil - a new to me herb. The difference between fresh picked asparagus cooked on the grill and what you find in the grocery store is like night and day. During the summer we opted for the Summer Share where received a box of produce every other week. We chose this option instead of the weekly share since it is just Mark and I we were not sure 1) how much produce we would get each week and 2) how much of the food that we received we would actually eat and how much would go to waste. I am happy to report that only about 5% or less went to "waste". The rest was happily eaten and some itemzs (like the snap peas and green beans) have been frozen for winter use. The produce varied from week to week depending on what was ripe and ready to be harvested. Some weeks we had a variety of different fruits and vegetables and other weeks we had a lot of the same thing. This was trulely an adventure and definately got Mark and I out of our comfort zone. It forced us to try things (like mustard greens and japanese eggplant) that we would probably not bought on our own. That's one of the beauties of Becktt Farm and CSA program in general - the ability to get fresh fruits and vegetables and a chance to expand your culinary horizons. I also loved the fact that I received an email each Monday before our pick up to let us know what would be in our shares. I can honestly say this was an awesome experience for Mark and I and we can't wait until 2013 to sign up again!

The quality of the trees is great - 5-6 years and we've never had a bad tree. They're full, look green and healthy until the New Year and smell amazing. As a plus, there's complimentary hot cider and popcorn, which my kids love. Something I can say yes to after picking out our tree and it also provides a snack for the ride home.

Backdrop cutouts, the tractor, and a grow line are other photo stops that keep you coming back. One heads up that admission doubles on weekends, but $8 per person wasn't terrible, and there's a discount if you buy hayride and Pumpkin Town tickets together. Pumpkin facts are all over pumpkin town (pumpkins are hand-painted, costumed each year, and stored nightly, etc.) and it's a fun scavenger hunt for these facts. Jumping houses, tubes, and interactive houses were the best parts for our little one. Credit/debit users, remember to bring cash for postcards as you can send them postmarked from Pumpkin Town, autumn treats like cider donuts and popcorn at the snack stand, and the catapults over the pond aimed at Red Sox and Yankees targets (must be a Mets Family here!). Also remember a couple bucks to cash for the breast cancer donation box, in memory of Sandy herself. Having to bring cash isn't my favorite but there was a farm stand and snack bar with souvenirs where cards could be used. Pumpkin Town is part folk art installation, part amusement park, part harvest fair, and a fun tradition. I only wish they had a Santa Town each winter...

She continued to argue with me about the fact that I should have called when I was very calm telling her I'll take the pumpkin it doesn't matter. I was just telling her why i thought Pumpkins were wanted. ​ she ranted at me that I should have called first even though I had already told her multiple times I would take the pumpkin back and I wasn't trying to argue. Finally she yelled at me "get off my property!" Totally bizarre. Anyways don't try and give them pumpkins.

It is located in an old large farm building that provides a nice rustic farm atmosphere. There usually isn't a huge amount of produce to choose from, but what they do have is fresh and in season. During the fall I always get my apple cider from here and they even have hot samples on site. And we especially enjoy the garlic! It's much better than what you get in the grocery store. The woman who runs it also provides many free recipe cards! If you're in the area definitely check this place out. It's great to support small family run businesses like this one. While I've never done this here, I believe they allow apple picking during the the season.

Supermarket corn is ok, however, driving up to the farm stand & seeing someone walking in from the field with a basket of just harvested corn is the best. They have 3 kinds: silver queen ( that's what I call it), all light kernels - very delicate; butter-sugar which is a mix of the yellow & light color kernels ( my all-time favorite), and the all yellow - very good too. There are other veggies here too and flowers. Totally worth the ride over even if you live outside of Glastonbury.

You'll find the bargain you are looking for here since the prices are significantly lower than other markets. Better yet, this market ACCEPTS SNAP/EBT! So you can pay in a variety of ways. If you are a farmer or an aspiring farmer yourself, you can also purchase your seedlings and plants here in the spring. You'll find seasoned farmers at this market as well as local youth who have lots of good, fresh stuff to share. Sometimes you can even get samples of the things you are interested in purchasing. Nothing like trying before you buy! Stay tuned as this market may have a different location in the future. But until then, check out the sheltered structure near the Frog Bridge/Thread City Crossing in Downtown Romantic Willimantic. This market is part of the Arts and Eats District on Main Street.
