I know I have my own farm to pick at but never hurts to branch out and help support the other farming community! The lady handing out the apple bags was very informative about the property. There are 28 variety of apples which compared to the one I work at which has 13. 130 acers in comparison to to the 82 at ours. The bags are sold at 2$ a pound so a half bushel filled will be around $40 and a peck will be roughly $20. My opinion get the bang for your buck and go all out. Creston apples are phenomenal! Reminds me of a ginger gold, great crunch, awesome flavor! I told my buddy here needs to buy these for his farm. Love the fact that a lot of rows are done in trellis style which I never seen before and make a great deal of sense for tree to acreage. They are also very manageable for picking that everything for me (6'1" tall) is grabbing reach. So you smaller people do not have to do all that jumping ;) Being the weekend before Columbus weekend the trees are on their last stretch of apples but the middle of the rows still have plenty for picking. The farm itself has blueberries, peaches, plums and pears too but certainly now out of season. The store itself is a nice treat. I filled a bag full of goodies to accommodate my sweet tooth but also to support the farm. The store is open seven days a week seven months out of the year. read more

We have been here multiple times and they not only have good apples, depending on the season, they have AMAZING peaches and blueberries. To respond to the reviewer below, they have a dog running around because it belongs to the owners. I'm assuming that's why they don't allow them? I also didn't notice any gnats, but it could have been the time of year/day we were there. Yes, this certainly isn't the fanciest apple orchard I've been to, but it certainly does the job. A decent local orchard with a variety of offerings. The main attraction here seems to be the apple picking. They have a large swath of land with apple trees lined up. Outside of the fall, it's usually fairly quiet here. Inside, you will find some different fresh fruits and vegetables, depending on the season. They also have candy, jellies/jams and apple cider. The owners and staff are very friendly. The prices are moderate compared to other orchards. I used to come here in the early 2000's as a kid when they were Crooke's Orchards. The selection seems to be a bit scaled back a bit, but there could be many reasons for that. You could nitpick about the store interior, the layout and the age of the building. I think it actually has a nice nostalgic feel, that of a family-run local orchard that isn't over the top with trying to be fancy. We're talking about Ashford here, so it's out in the country. It brings back memories of my childhood knowing that the overall look of the place has not changed in 15-20 years. All in all, this is a decent place to stop, especially if apples are in season. read more

I used to love visiting this place many times each season with my family. Last visit, the cashiers were not wearing masks and their store was packed, with no guidelines for social distancing. All the customers were wearing masks -- I'm not sure why the cashiers decided they don't need to follow state guidelines. After they touched each of my apples at checkout, I decided I can't risk a return visit. It's too bad. read more

This is a really cute orchard not far from UCONN Storrs campus. It's good for large groups IF you call ahead - the line to check out can move slowly since there's only 1 register. There's a lot of different red and mixed apple varieties, no Granny Smith though. There were also a number of pumpkins and what looked like pears as well. If you don't want to pick your own apples, there are lots of pre-picked apples available inside. The mixes for different apple treats were hit or miss - the double apple muffin mix was not very sweet which I normally like, but the apple bread mix was absolutely delicious and I would highly recommend. The cider donuts were good too, but nothing special compared to what you can get at the grocery store this time of year. read more

I had heard bad things from friends about Horse Listener's but thought I would give them a try anyway. Wish I hadn't. I wanted some Macouns and got them and they were fine. But I also needed Cortlands for my Thanksgiving pies. The apples looked a bit iffy, but I was there and....bought them anyway. Sure enough, when I went to use my apple peeler/corer the cores were squishy and the peeler/corer wouldn't work. So it took me twice as long to peel and slice the apples. I did buy a couple of extra Cortlands at the grocery store (for half the price of Horse Listeners) and those were crisp and perfect! I don't mind paying extra to support a local business, but I do mind paying to buy compost! And to top it off, the woman in the farm store was unmasked. What makes her think she doesn't owe the public the courtesy of a mask? read more

Totally not impressed by this place for apple picking. We called ahead to see if they were dog-friendly, no was the answer we got. Got to the farm, there is a dog running all over. Walking through the orchard, there were gnats everywhere, fighting through bugs to get at apples was not cool. On the way to checkout, we see a big sign for fresh apple cider donuts. To me, fresh is made on the premises.. these were not. The shop was also dingy and poorly laid out. Strike, strike, strike.. you're out! read more

I came across this orchard while searching Groupon for local deals. It was only about 30 minutes from our house so we decided to try blueberry picking there. I figured it should be a decent place if they are offering a groupon, no? Well I was partially wrong. The blueberry season is still pretty early & most all of the blueberries were already picked over. I'm thankful I waited to purchase the groupon because it was for 2 people up to 5lbs of blueberries each. My husband and I spent over an hour searching the trees high and low & ended up with 2.5lbs combined. Their website stated they had a "store" with pies & cobblers etc... Hardly. They didn't have either & only a few jams... The store was pretty empty. Overall the orchard was just ok, very scarce for picking your own blueberries. Maybe their apple season will be better, but I'm not sure I'd take the drive back. read more

I heard about this place from a family friend and decided to head over on a Saturday to check it out. Not only are the grounds expansive and beautiful, but the fresh fruit was great and the staff warm and welcoming! Lot's to do here whether you're bringing the kids for a day out or just grabbing something from the farm shop. I definitely recommend checking it out. Might just head back there for my Christmas tree this year! read more

A beautiful location with fresh, local fruits and veggies. It's the only orchard we go to! The apples and peaches are amazing. The store is what I picture when I think of the quintessential New England orchard, plus the greenhouses in the back are really neat, especially for kids to learn how fruits and veggies are grown. It's a true hidden gem! We plan on visiting many, many times this season. read more
