Cedar Ledge Tree Farm - We have great Christmas Trees

We have been coming to this farm for about four years to cut down our own tree and I wouldn't go…read moreanywhere else. The family that owns the farm is just lovely and the other people who work there are just as friendly and helpful. They are definitely getting more popular ( it is easy to see why once you have been!) they ran out of trees to cut down a few weeks before Christmas this year! The owner says he has to plan 8 or 9 years in advance for the number of trees he thinks they'll need. My one criticism would be they don't update the website often ,so I would recommend calling ahead to make sure they still have trees available. Free hot chocolate inside the shop and pooches on leashes are welcomed:) everything about this farm gets me in the Christmas spirit!

They have plenty of parking, free hot chocolate, offer tree shaking (to get rid of loose needles) and tying included in the tree price, as well as providing a saw. They'll even help you put it on your car should you need a hand. This year they started to offer a wagon ride to the top of their farm (it is a very steep hill/ledge) if you aren't feeling up to the walk. That was disappointing since most people were too lazy to go to the top, leaving a bigger and better selection for me who was willing to walk! There are carts to walk your tree down the hill strategically placed all over the farm. They have a good selection of trees, many Norway Spruce, Blue Spruce, Canaan Fir, and many others. Most are priced at around $45. Also, this is one of the few places that welcomes dogs, as their own dog Ginger wanders around the tree prep area. Keep 'em leashed and pick up any poop so they continue to welcome dogs! All in all, a great family run tree farm.

The area is very cool. I parked roadside, but the entrance is around that side of the building and there was parking closer to the entrance. Out back, there is a great view of open land, grass and trees. There are a few chairs and benches and it's a peaceful spot to eat your food and let young kids run around. I bought an ice cream flight, two cookies, Silver Queen corn and heirloom tomatoes. I'm primarily reviewing the ice cream side of the business, but I'm factoring the other things in as well. Ice cream is always tasty, but I'd say the ice cream was about average for CT ice cream places making their own ice cream. I ordered a flight of Mint Chocolate Chip, Chocolate Peanut Butter, Blueberry Cheesecake and Cow Palace. The flight came in a cup, rather than some sort of flat container that would keep the flavors separate. I feel like I had a good chance to try the Chocolate Peanut Butter (which reminded me of a Fudgesicle) and the Mint CC (which was kind of standard). The flavors below the top two, kind of blended into each other by the time I got to them. I picked up some cheesecake flavor and berry flavor and chocolate chips. All good. A highlight was the two cookies (a chocolate chip and a peanut butter chip). The kind person who helped me with my ice cream said she made the cookies that morning. My wife ate most of the cookies, but I tried both and they were fresh and delicious. I used a tomato for a BLT. It was good. The Silver queen corn was also good. Red Barn had a reasonably good selection of in season produce, baked goods such as pies, butter, milk, jarred goods. A good place to shop for stuff like that. Four Stars

There was a time when I thought the front counters of country stores would make an interesting picture of rural america, maybe some one will make it and ... but on to Rucki's. What a cool find. A small country store with fresh vegetables from local gardens, a few canned goods, videos for rent, books to loan, a coffee area, fresh made morning cinnamon rolls, fresh meat, friendly people and more. After chatting with mom, (her daughters are moving things around the store and cashier - I am sure they do everything around the store as well) I learned that the tag line for the store is everything from Bibles to Bullets - and yes they sell bibles and bullets!. So I bought a fresh baked gooey cinnamon roll and gave the young lady a 2 dollar bill. One of my other well known quirks is to carry two dollar bills and use them for purchases and tips. She looked at the two dollar bill, held it up and yelled across the store, mom do we take these and she held it up. Her mom laughed and the young teenagers had her first encounter with a two dollar bill. What fun. Creating memories for her and me as the travels continue. Be sure to visit Frog Rock for another hoot when you are in the area.
