I have been a regular here for about a year. But the last two times I have visited I have been less than impressed. The attitude of the (I think) new manager is off putting. We had booked a table outside for our workcrew a month in advance, upon checking a few days before the day the manager pretended he knew nothing of an outside booking and made a big deal about it (even though we had it confirmed BY EMAIL!), blablabla, long story short, he was quite rude about it but because we were with so many, we couldn't really find another place short notice so went with the table inside. On the night itself, we found out why he had suddenly 'lost' our booking, as there was big 40th birthday party planned outside. whatevs, we enjoyed our meal and vinos. Bit strange when we all got one glass of vino for the road, they charged around a tenner a glass.
Now, we were with the workcrew, and i know some restaurants can find that frustrating/ annoying/intimidating/ whatnot....I understand. so I was still raving about the cavern..until tonight!
3 of us walked in early enough, checked with the waitress if there was space outside, yup no problem (place was empty), but their licence changed, we needed to order food with our drinks ...again, no problem, as we came for the food in the first place. We got our prosecco's upstairs, and walked back down straight to the outside garden. We looked around where we wanted to sit. Then the 'manager' who was sitting at a table with friends said in a condescending way without moving from his seat ' you want to wait until someone comes and gets you seated!' Excuse me? I said that the waitress already knew of our existence and it was okay for us to sit here. 'okay, well then you can wait till she brings you menu's'
What? bad start. He made a fool of out of us, with 6 pairs of his friends eyes staring at us and us feeling like we really don't belong there. we were feeling quite uncomfortable let me tell you.
Scanning the menu, looked like they upped their prices since this licence change as there was nothing on there under a tenner. We went for our usual sharing plates anyway, as they are divine. This time round, still amazing...but the bread was stale. Inedible basically. We asked for fresh bread. The waitress came back with fresh bread, but said' this is how the bread is meant to be, it's the style of bread' Are you f***** ing kidding me? obviously the replacement bread was lovely and soft and still warm from the oven as it was freshly baked. We might not be D4 but we do know the difference between fresh and stale bread. Once polished of, we asked for more bread.... we got a plate with the stale bread from the first round. I am not kidding! They really wanted to get rid of it I think. Obviously we sent it back again. We saw the same bread served to the tables beside us a few minutes later, poor souls.
all 3 of use are over and done with this place, a real shame, as it was in my top 5 Dublin places. But looking at their attitude I do not think they are too sorrowful to lose our custom. read more
