On our last day in Dublin, we had an early dinner at Platform 61, which we discovered through Yelp -- so not quite a best-kept secret, but certainly a terrific hangout on South William Street. Usually, the dining room comprises an underground hideaway that is quite sleek and intimate. However, due to the lockdown measures, we had to do outdoor seating directly on William Street while we were there. The experience was still beautiful, thanks to the surrounding scenery. The cocktails were grand between the P61 Signature Cocktail and the Hugo -- both prosecco-based cocktails. The former was delicious between the peach puree and prosecco, while the latter was a little more tart with the elderflower cordial. For dinner, we kicked things off with gluten-free bread with a trio of dips that were quite tasty. The Tortellini I ordered was exquisite and scrumptious with how it was prepared between the goat cheese, asparagus, red onion, wilted spinach, cream sauce, and bacon. I applauded this lovely dish with the last bite. I devoured the warm almond flour brownie for dessert, served with chocolate sauce and gelato, which my wife could also enjoy since the dish was gluten-free. Overall, Platform 61 was a great way to conclude our second Irish journey. We will return, especially to enjoy the underground dining area. read more

Our entire group absolutely loved everything we ordered (gnocchi, pesto pasta, risotto, cheese board, pork belly) and everyone agreed it was some of the best food we had on the entire trip! As always when exploring a new city, I needed to find a good brunch. Platform 61 has bottomless mimosas, which is exactly what I was looking for. At first, the refills were a bit slow, but once our server figured out what we were trying to accomplish (balls to the wall brunch), he started bringing them much more frequently. Bottomless mimosas for €15 !!! But that's not where the goodness ends. Came here or brunch on a Saturday afternoon without reservation and managed to get a table. The service was pretty flawless. I ordered the Stun Bun which is a grilled chicken fillet in a brioche bun with guacamole, tomato, onion, lettuce and tomato relish. This came with spicy sweet potato wedges. Delicious and perfectly cooked. The wedges are soooo nice! The bottomless mimosas for €15 applies when you order any main course and it lasts for 1.5 hours. They mean bottomless, my glass wasn't empty before a second one appeared on the table. I also had a dessert which was a white chocolate and raspberry creme brulee. It was lush! Very cutesy little restaurant tucked away on the basement level on South William Street. The staff were very welcoming and accommodating and the food was great. We got a free cocktail for checking in with Yelp and a complimentary coffee after our meal due to a mix - up with our booking, so happy customers all round! Can't speak for the prices/value of the menu as we were eating out on a voucher, which was excellent value for money. I had the chicken pate to start, which was delicious and served with a fruity/spicy compote and sea-bass with tomato risotto for my main, which managed to be virtuous while tasting very indulgent. I really enjoyed both courses and also the house red that was part of the voucher we were dining on. The dessert was definitely the weakest component of the meal, it was billed as a trio or medley of desserts but arrived to the table as three separate minuscule plates of brownie, Eton Mess and baklava. It just felt a bit cobbled together - not a cohesive dessert but rather a little taste of three separate sweets. Still, I really enjoyed the meal and thought the staff were really lovely so I'd recommend this place if you find yourself looking for a bite in this part of the city. read more

By the time we wandered up to Platform 61 it was probably 10:30 at night - had decided a little spontaneously to do late nibbles and drinks but were failing to find anywhere with a kitchen still open - and they were still doing their cheese and meat platter type things. After finding nothing at the last 6 or 7 places we popped into, this sounded great to us! Important to note is that this place only has a small sign outside of it and you have to walk down a narrow staircase to the door so it could be easy to miss if you didn't keep a sharp eye out. It's kind of modern inside, dark décor with a tiny bar area (staff only) separating the front and back rooms. The fact that the entrance is sunken down from street level makes it feel a bit more intimate and the bustle on the street doesn't distract from the cool atmosphere inside. We ordered one each of the cheese and meat platters - the cheese platter was decent (although there was an apple/onion chutney thing which was outrageously delish) but the meat platter - and specifically the olives on it - really blew us away! The wine recommendation from the server was spot-on as well, didn't break the bank for a bottle but went down really easily and (as a red) was great especially with the meats. Obviously can't comment on the main courses or desserts since we weren't there when the kitchen was actually open, but this did exactly the trick - great ambience, good nibbles, wine that was easy on the palate and the wallet, and good service, right in the area we needed it to be! Will definitely be back to try the desserts at least as the descriptions looked delectable. read more

This is a great little restaurant that is almost hidden in the basement level of one of the old Victorian buildings on South WIlliam Street. Being underground and tightly packed, it has much of the vibe of a restaurant you might find in the Village or the Lower East Side in New York, the city for which the restaurant is named. I went to Platform 61 for the first time this past weekend with a group of friends. I'll start by saying that the venue and the staff were wonderful throughout the evening. As for the food, we started by sharing a meat platter and a bread and dip platter. The bread and sun dried tomato dip were both particularly good and disappeared off the table in no time. The mains were the only weakness. I ordered the steak which was overly salted and was delivered to me well done despite asking for it medium rare. A number of my friends ordered burgers and they were also saying that they had over-cooked and over-salted the burgers as well.. The desserts did make up for it (thus the four stars) as we tried multiple desserts and all were delicious. Overall I would recommend the restaurant for a nice night out but I might recommend against ordering the beef based on our experience. read more

First of all, the menu is incorrect on their website. There is no pre set or early bird, so don't get deceived. This was the only reason we went. Secondly, I realized I've been here before and have mentally blocked it out of my mind because everything about it is so subpar. Thirdly, the restaurant had a complete disregard for government guidelines for outdoor dining. The tables are extremely close together, the guards had to come and warn them they had about twice the amount of patrons than allowed. There wasn't any hand sanitizer on the tables given the high menu prices and it's only available downstairs in the restaurant. Also, no hooks in the bathroom, why??? The service was good at first but then disappeared when it came time to pay for the check. Had to wait 45 minutes even after trying to get their attention. Food was miserable. My taste buds and stomach were totally unsatisfied. I had to make a second dinner when I got home because the food was bland and came in extremely tiny portions and it's not even michelin rated! Very much enjoyed this. We had a huge range of dietary needs (from a near-carniverous Greek to a vegan from California) and each of us had a beautiful meal and wine. I recommend the fish (hake I think it was?) which came in a beautiful sauce and a bed of veg and mussels. The bruschetta could be made vegan. The steak was cooked nicely and flavorful and came with some truly beautifully cooked oyster mushrooms (not chewy at all-- perfectly tender). Our waiter recommended a risotto from off the menu to our vegan diner. Not a magical or inventive vegan meal, but a solid risotto. We got a reservation for 10 people as soon as it opened and showed up a few minutes early. We were immediately welcomed in, offered lattes, and served mimosas. Good food at a fair price. I have a few quibbles: Friendly and efficient staff. They just need to learn that saying "no problem" to customers is inappropriate. When someone arrives and says they have a reservation or requests a glass of wine, there are better responses. It's a service profession, not a chat session with friends. Try "certainly" or "yes, of course". If you're serving tzatziki with the lamb, it shouldn't be ice cold. Find a way to get it close to room temperature. The front room -- all I saw--is designed to be noisy. It only takes one loud talker to make dining here unpleasant. And that's what happened when the room filled at dinner. Entry from the street is down a steep flight of stairs to a very small space in front of the entrance. That space should not be used by smokers, whether clients or anyone else. No non-smoker should have to put up with this. And the smokers I passed seemed to be friends of the staff. read more

After reading the positive reviews and checking out the menu online, we decided to make a reservation and try Platform 61 for dinner last night. The interior is really warm and intimate... so far, so good. Then, we looked at the menu. None of the things I wanted to try were listed! Instead of their regular menu, they only had a very limited Christmas set menu available. This is not mentioned on their website nor was it mentioned when we made our reservation! It's not even December yet! I was really disappointed! They did bring us complimentary cocktails though (check in with Yelp and you'll get one too). Regardless, we did go ahead and order the 3-course set menu (€35) and the food was fine. I started with the asparagus with parma ham. It's exactly what it sounds like - a couple spears of asparagus wrapped with ham. Nothing particularly exciting, but also nothing wrong with it either. For my main, I had the striploin steak. It was cooked nicely, with a good crust and medium rare like I asked. It wasn't seasoned, though, and the gravy it came with was very bland, but there was no salt & pepper at the table so I had to ask. Here's the tacky part: They came back a few minutes later and asked if I was done with it, as another table also needed salt & pepper. Come on, just buy enough salt & pepper grinders so every table has a set! This shouldn't have to be a special request. For dessert, we all went with the cherry strudel. This was really soggy and stodgy - I couldn't finish mine, to be honest. The wine list was very small, and our server was really pushing the Argentinian Malbec, so we went with her suggestion. It was really nice, we were happy with the choice and it wasn't too badly priced at €35 for the bottle. Looking around, though, it looked like every other table was drinking the same wine, so it must be the one they really try to sell. It's a new restaurant, so hopefully they're still working out the kinks because there's definitely room for improvement here. I'd like to come back and try their regular menu next year. read more

They advertised the dine in Dublin festival which normally means you get a Dine in Dublin special offer but when we turned up the waiter said they never received the ingredients to run with Dine in Dublin!! Pretty bizarre to be honest. I was with a group of 6 and we meet up once a month to dine out so we were very disappointed we had to pay full price. I've been living in Dublin for 3 months and this is my favorite place. Dublin has a lot of nice dining options but this is the only one that I found that feels intimate and undiscovered. Great food and atmosphere and the staff is knowledgeable and friendly. It's relatively affordable, the early bird special will run you around 20 euros for an appetizer and a main. I had a groupon voucher to try it out and it was brilliant. The voucher covered a main course and glass of wine each for two people. The wine of course is the house wine but they allow you to upgrade to something else and just pay the difference. We went for a bottle which costs €30 but they only charged us €16 for the upgrade. It was very accommodating. The menu itself is small but that can be a good thing. We went for cod and steak and shared each dish. The steak was absolutely delicious, like it was straight off a BBQ and it was cooked medium-rare to perfection as requested. The cod was melt in the mouth and the inclusion of smoked bacon pieces made for a delicious combo. We had a side of potatoes with chorizo. For dessert, we had the flour-less brownie and Crème brûlée. The brownie was interesting but I think I would prefer a normal brownie. The Crème brûlée was perfect. I would go back for the steak alone. read more

Went here to celebrate a friend's birthday. First impressions as you walk in off a dreary South William Street, is a warm modern nook that you feel lucky you've stumbled upon! The staff were very attentive and welcoming. For starter, I had the lamb meatballs, which were delcious with tzatziki and ribboned courgettes. My friends enjoyed their prawn and goat's cheese starters too. I had the pappardelle pasta with mushrooms and peas for my main, it was really delicious; but as an omnivore, I really missed meat in this unfortunately vegetarian dish....it would be nice if they offered a pasta dish with meat, eg: option of pappardelle with/without prosciutto/scallops. But anyway thats a personal thing, regardless it was tasty. My friend really liked her duck confit (special) with red wine jus. As dessert, I got the blackberry and apple crumble... get it! It is gorgeous, a nice balance of sweet and acidic. All in all, I would definitely come back here! read more
