Such good southern cooking! My stepmom loves fried catfish, so we were in town and took her for linch on Friday, which is catfish day. She enjoyed every bite of fish and her veggie sides, too. She said the rutabagas were the best she'd ever had! We loved our green beans, turnip greens, fried green tomatoes, and creamed corn. The service is friendly and attentive, and the large dining room is large enough to accommodate a crowd. This is good, because they are always busy. They aren't open on Saturdays but are now open on Thursday and Fridays for dinner. This place served authentic Southern fare with large portions and excellent service. Highly recommend! read more

CB's, formerly known as Zach's, is a wonderful buffet place that everyone can enjoy! The food is always kept to its appropriate temperatures and they constantly restock anything that goes out of stock very quickly! The staff is very friendly and helps you get sat quickly and constantly checks in for drink refills. The environment is very casual and gives a very sociable atmosphere for you to enjoy the southern decorative style with your friends and family! If you are ever in slocomb, come over to CB's! Downtown Slocomb, Alabama World renowned - Zack's is the magnet of all Houston and Geneva Counties. Catfish is scarce in these parts so we had to do without this time. The buffet has a never ending, bottomless abundance of southern cuisine. If I were raised here, I'm pretty sure I'd be sayin' "It's just like mama's cookin'" The waitresses were logging in their miles running back and forth, clearing tables and fetching drinks. Zack's has been open in Slocomb for approximately 20 years. It is known for cooking fresh from the farm and that is true. The Slocomb location is a buffet serve yourself, unlike the Dothan location that is cafeteria style. I am not one for buffets because the restaurant is more about quantity that quality. Zack's is more about good ole country cooking. Today, the buffet consisted of fried chicken, fried catfish, baked chicken, and hamburger steak. Vegetables available were mashed potatoes, peas, 2 types of butter beans, cream corn, cheese grits, sweet potato casserole, salad, and slaw. There were a variety of desserts that included chocolate pie, banana pudding, and coconut cake. My plate consisted of fried chicken, hamburger steak, mashed potatoes, butter beans, slaw, sweet potato casserole, hushpuppy, and cheese biscuit. The best items on my plate were the mashed potatoes and butter beans. The mashed potatoes were not your average white mashed potatoes. It seemed to be made from red-skin potatoes and was more thick. The butter beans probably had sugar added to them but they were some of the best I had ever had. All of it was good to me except I wasn't impressed with the hamburger steak. It tasted like a better, thicker, Burger King patty. Sweet tea was refreshingly sweet! My total was $11 so for a good price and value, you can stuff yourself silly at Zack's on country cooking. read more

Like family, without, you know, all that awkward family stuff. (1) Food: Blindfolded with a heaping plate in front of me, I'd think I'd travele 40 years back in time and 10 miles north to my grandmother's house in Wicksburg. Grandmother's sweet iced tea would have probably been sweeter, but my waistline demands unsweet tea these days anyway. (2) Ambiance: It's fine -- actually, it was in transition from Zack's to CB's when we had a big gathering there, but still it was fine. The tables were sturdy enough to hold up the massive plates of food of my Big Ol' Boy cousins. That was one on my bigger concerns. (3) People: 1st rate by any measure. On short notice, Sheila accommodated 60-ish of us on a day that the restaurant was scheduled to be closed. We were gathering after my father's funeral. It was easy for us to relax and reminisce about happy past meals when were being taken care of so thoughtfully. Eating here is on my must-do list for every trip back home now. read more

I've been to Slocomb 2 other times and couldn't wait to try it out. So here we are...all the way from Boston Ma lookin for some down home soul food. Zack's did not disappoint. Fried chicken (y) baked chicken (n) pork chops pot roast turnip collards mac n cheese (‍yes please) honey butter biscuits corn bread (not like you think) butter beans green beans cabbage and fried green tomatoes and that's everything I tried. there was so much more that I didn't try. O! My Word!! Zack's Restaurant is hands down has the best southern cooking I've eaten in a long time. Service was spot on, the dinning room was cozy, and the buffet maintained meticulously well. I'm not usually a fan of buffets because I don't like the idea of unwatched children playing in the food. This was not the case here. I had a pleasurable experience and will be back as often as I can when in Alabama. I had perfectly prepared and seasoned fried chicken, lima beans, orka, macaroni pie, hush puppies, and apple cobbler. In addition to what I listed above, the buffet offered several meats: fried catfish, meatloaf, country style steak, and roast beef. Also offered was cream corn, green beans, fried zucchini, mashed potatoes, turnip greens, rutabagas, and fried cornbread. There was a separate salad bar. Buffets generally have a few stand-out items, a few also-rans and the rest is just filler. NOT HERE! You can tell someone put thought, time and effort into each and every item on the line. Just for example, the fried chicken isn't just some chicken pieces dragged through flour and dropped in a deep fryer. This is the fried chicken you would find at a county fair competition. The pork chops are either brined or rubbed or something. The meatloaf has a barbecue quality. The catfish, beef tips, fried tenderized steak...all have a little something special. Maybe it's love. The vegetables are just the same and the variety..... Don't miss the fried green tomatoes, green beans, corn, zipper peas, Lima beans, mashed potatoes with the peels and both brown and white cream gravy, black-eyed peas, greens, boiled cabbage, fried okra, rice and fried cornbread. And all you can eat. I've only eaten there five times and have yet to visit the salad bar nor have I been able to save room for the pudding, cake or cobbler on the dessert bar. I drive 25 miles one way and I have to limit myself to once a week or 10 days. I don't know what I would weigh if they were open for dinner. Don't try to go early to beat the lunch crowd: there are people waiting when they unlock the doors. The crowd thins out around 1:30 or so but this is a busy establishment and the servers stay BUSY. If you're a fan of country, home-cookin' this will be one of your favorites too. read more
