Eli our server came to our table with a big smile and excellent table skills. This was my first visit here and it did not disappoint. The hostess seated us within 5-7 minutes of arriving but we did arrive around 5 pm and I suggest this unless you are prepared to wait. The place looked clean and the noise level was medium. The seafood platter I had was cooked to perfection and well balanced with taste. I will get again. One friend had the shrimp and grits and she said it was the best she had ever had. My other friend had the prime rib and he said it was moist and he would have it again. The crab claws we had as an appetizer were out of this world! Fried to perfection and hot. We visited this restaurant for a birthday and because someone reccomended it saying it was one of the best restaurants in town. Then we found out it use to be good like 15 years ago. Now, it's run down and not good at all. I ordered gumbo and it was filled with tiny crab claws, I fished out about 10 before giving up and not eating any more. The lettuce on Ceasar salad was old. We also ordered the chicken fettuccine and it came with frozen processed chicken, we knew the chicken wasn't grilled, it was chicken pieces from frozen packaging. The worst part is I got violently sick the moment we got home, and the next morning, my partner was also sick. I highly do NOT recommend this restaurant. read more

Went with a large party so some issues are more understandable than if it wasn't a large party but overall the experience was not good. The blackened shrimp had little blackening seasoning, was extremely dried out and took a considerable amount of time to make it to the table. The sides we ordered were no longer available after we ordered but instead of informing us and asking what we'd prefer instead they simply substituted with whatever they thought would work. Some of our food never even came out but at least it wasn't on the end bill, just expected better communication. This was a totally fine meal. The place looks & feels old. Nothing special, but solid for an old country-style restaurant. I was impressed by their bar selection, but the margarita was not very good; it was really sweet. The rolls were fine -- not bad, but not great. They were dense & sort of bland. The fried crab claws were terrific. I ordered the broiled seafood platter, and it was fine. The grouper was a little dry, but the rest of it was good. I got a side of sweet potato fries, which, like the rest of the meal, was fine. They're the fat, soft kind of fries though, which I don't like nearly as much as thin, crispy fries. Been living in the area for almost 6 years, we finally tried The Old Mill Restaurant. I visited with my husband for a date night for the first time at 8pm on a Saturday night, after visiting a haunted house event in October. The restaurant was not too busy , and the hostess sat us right away. At first it seemed lovely and homey with older carpet and comfortable booths. With a closer look I noticed artificial planters hanging from the ceiling covered in furry dust. There was one giant picture frame on the wall that listed steak temps and descriptions. When we were sat, on my table was a salt and pepper shaker and a wicker basket full of margarine. The salt shaker lid had some food--maybe baked potato---smeared on the lid and the margarine basket had a used open empty container of margarine with the lid still attached right on top of the rest of the unused ones. We ordered 2 waters and Cowboy bites for $9.99. They came out within 5 minutes. They were hot and fresh, but could have been perfect with a more flavorful less watery ranch than the one that was provided. For our entrees we both ordered 10 ounce Prime rib meals, it comes with a basket of rolls and two sides. Listed as market price on the menu, we didn't bother to ask what that was. We both chose medium rare preparations ,house salads with ranch, he ordered fries, I ordered a veggie skewer. Our salads came out first they looked fresh and lovely a basic house salad with iceburg lettuce, Roma tomato slices, cucumber slices, red onion ring slices, 3 croutons and finely shredded Colby jack. It was served chilled with the same weak-in-flavor, watery, ranch that came with the cowboy bites. About 10 minutes after our salads came out, our meals came out. The prime rib was served with aujus, our sides and I requested a side of creamy horseradish Both of our prime ribs were very tough. Hard to cut through with the steak knives provided. Hard to chew. So much I ended up just ripping the meat with my hands and teeth, It wasn't seasoned very well tasted like cafeteria or buffet quality roast beef. No salt no flavor. I was hungry and at this point wasn't going to waste protein. The aujus was pointless, had zero flavor, wasn't hot, wasn't even salty. The creamy horseradish hardly tasted like anything either, no pungent horseradish flavor at all, but was slightly sour, like it was expired. My veggie skewer had chunks of red onion, tomato, red bell pepper, mushroom and zucchini on it all my veggies were still cold and raw. My breath this morning is still very oniony from the raw onion on the skewer and is what reminded me when I woke up that I had to write a review. My husband's fries were the very big thick potatoey kind, they were not crispy at all and served lukewarm. He couldn't even eat half of them. The basket of rolls we were given, we didn't even try, when I picked one up it was cold, super heavy, dry and dense feeling and I did not trust the margarine basket. As we ate the two tables in our section finished and left. We were eating meals and right next to us we had two different waitress's, one behind him and one behind me (our waitress) sweeping the carpets. It was just not a pleasant ambience to hear for the entirety of your chewy bland prime rib dinner the clanking of a broom and a dust pan brushing over carpet over and over again. Whatever happened to the quiet rolling type sweepers they had in the 90's, places are to cheap to care about customer experience anymore. I know you close at 9, but still you should wait to sweep until your table leaves. My rubbery prime rib and raw veggies caused me to finish my water cup once. I couldn't take another bite until I had more water. So I waited for my waitress to get close enough with the broom and slurped my empty water really loud so they would put down the broom and refill it for me. I tried to finish my food but I couldn't. I left most of my vegetables on the plate they were raw raw raw. My prime rib was just hard to eat and it was not medium rare. I don't even think it was prime rib. I swear it was roast beef from Golden Corral. I've never had a prime rib that was so chewy. My husband did finish his prime rib but one whole side of his cut was fat. And he had to do a lot of chewing to get it down. The order total came to $94, I am giving the restaurant 2 stars because they offered a military discount. So it saved us $8.00. Although the waitress was sweeping right next to our table when I was trying to eat and left my water empty for a while. They ware very nice. And I'm just not a jerk, after leaving a $20 tip while my husband visited the bathroom.. $106 , When we got in the car my husband asked how much it ended up being and he was was floored. He said at that price everything should have been perfect. I told him, "Most expensive cafeteria food ever in my lifetime. now we know, and I won't ever say, let's go to Old Mill for dinner when you ask me where do I want to go." read more

Not only did we both get food poisoning, but the loud music from the kitchen staff gave McDonald's drive-thru at 1am vibes. I remember this place being considered fancy back in the day. The food was excellent. Food was cooked as expected with the steak being perfectly cooked at a medium as I requested. Prices are reasonable for what you get at a more expensive restaurant. Service was quick and fast, waiters being very friendly and constantly coming back to check on us and get refills without question from us. This one is a tough review for me (I would give 2 1/2 stars). I love to find and support local businesses and really had high expectations for The Old Mill. It is a long standing staple in Dothan, Alabama. We were in town for Christmas and got here a day early so we wanted to have a nice meal. We got there at an average time for a Saturday night. We weren't really greeted but since there were only two of us we were sat immediately. There isn't any ambiance and not sure that anything has been updated since 1986. There is a full bar behind the hostess station where you can get drinks while you wait. Our server was the highlight of the evening as she was so pleasant and provided lots of "southern hospitality". She got our drinks quickly and we ordered the Cowboy Bites appetizer. It is a fried combination of sweet corn, jalapeño, cream cheese, and bacon. These were delicious! It had just the right amount of pepper flavor and I could clearly taste all four ingredients. They do ask if you would like some rolls which are homemade yeast rolls. These were ok. The tops were nice and soft but the bottoms were a bit overdone. For our entrees I ordered the 10oz ribeye and crab cake combo with a baked potato and steamed broccoli. My wife ordered the grilled chicken with the same sides. The chicken is topped with Swiss and sautéed mushrooms and onions. She opted for the onions only. Unfortunately, the entrees is where things went downhill. The chicken was not very well seasoned and although cooked well to maintain the moisture it just didn't have much flavor. The sautéed onions were mostly the skin of the onion so that was disappointing. Both of our steamed broccoli sides were steamed well but on the cooler side of lukewarm. My crab cake had some good flavor but the lemon butter sauce was much too salty which was surprising as that shouldn't be the case. My steak was also lukewarm at best although I will give credit that it was cooked a perfect medium and had nice flavor. Amazingly, the best parts of our meals were the cheapest parts which were the baked potatoes. Both were hot and fresh. Our food came out pretty quickly which made the lack of hot / fresh temp more disappointing. Our server did thank us for coming in, welcomed us back and wished us a Merry Christmas. I was in town for a network meeting and wanted local fare and this Old Mill fit the bill for what i wanted. Amber was my server and she kept my water glass full. I ordered the 5oz cheeseburger and it was more than enough. The burger was juicy, the bun was toasted and a separate plate of toppings was provided so i could build my burger. I also had the bread pudding and it was very good. If I had one critique, it may be that the bread wasn't as soft as I like it, but the vanilla ice cream made up for it. If you want to support a local restaurant in Dothan, who makes great burgers, Old Mill is worthy of your money. One addition to this review, Amber brought me a to go water without me even asking and she used my first name when saying goodbye. I asked them if I walked in would you tell me that you were too busy to seat me and take my order and was told no of course not. Couldn't give them no stars so I had to select 1 star. Our waitress was excellent and never left us waiting for anything. They have an early bird menu so my wife got fried shrimp, salad, and a sweet potato. She enjoyed her meal. She really like the biscuits. I had the seafood lovers platter fried. The platter comes with fish, shrimp, and baby scallops. My two sides were a baked potato and a side salad. We ordered crab claws and the new corn fritters. The crab claws had zero seasoning in the batter. My mom and I split a chopped steak and it was good. My dad ordered one as well (we ordered both well done) and his was B. U. R. N. T. My dad expressed his concern to the waitress and she said "what would you like me to do about it?" EXCUSE ME?! How about you take your attitude back to your manager for an adjustment!? That sealed the deal for me. I'm done with Old Mill. You Jacked up my crab claws then when my dad says I know it's not your fault, but my steak is burnt and you give that response. Absolutely not acceptable. "The Old Mill" has, recently, changed/updated their menu, entirely! Honestly, haven't tried one thing I didn't absolutely Love ! Def, was the right call! Now, one of my favorite restaurants! We are in Dothan for a few days and I failed to plan my meals beforehand. A quick Google search and looking at a few menus brought us to the Old Mill Restaurant. We got there early as we were hungry! The host was super friendly and let us choose a booth. Waitress (Erin) was prompt with our drink order, gave us ample time to look at the menu and even offered me a few suggestions. My wife had grilled chicken with cheese , onions and mushrooms with broccoli and a sweet potato . I chose shrimp and grits with a salad. My salad was served along with a basket of some of the best rolls we've had! Both of our meals were very good! To finish we shared a bread pudding with a warm whisky sauce and vanilla ice cream. I've heard of Old Mill for years and never tried it. My husband's family had a get together so we chose OM for family dinner for our party of 9. The facility: It's nice - just nice. Clean, maintained. No frills, at all. The food: I had the chicken breast, which was fairly dry. It was topped with a slice of swiss cheese and mushrooms (no onions by request). The flavor was good. My sweet potato was under cooked; I was promptly brought broccoli (by request) as a replacement, which was good. My cousin's sweet potato was cook, he had no complaints. The YEAST ROLLS are the truth and the light!!! Yasss hun-tee!! A runner up for perfection is the ranch salad dress! The service was adequate but the food was cold and terrible. I ordered a blackened Grouper and it was rubbery and cold. The veggies were good but no one wanted to talk about the Grouper. The kitchen might have been backed up because there were two large groups meeting but that should be no excuse for 1 fish dinner being cold.
