I'm surprised I haven't reviewed The Blue Plate yet! We've been here several times when we've been down visiting my stepmom in Panama City. This place is a real gem if you enjoy really good Southern cooking. The service is as friendly as a small-town restaurant can be and the food is delicious. Regulars are greeted warmly and there is the general ambience of a family dinner. The restaurant is clean and comfortable and the wait, if there is one, is usually short. I often order the chicken-fried chicken and my husband varies his choices. On our last visit, he had the pork chop, as did my stepmom. We all loved our meals, especially the fresh vegetables. Their lima beans (or butter beans, if you're a true Southerner) are a must-have! We try to stop here on most of our trips down to P.C. It's such a dependable good meal! read more

The menu is not extensive, but also not expensive. On a given Sunday morning expect to wait a spell, but the wait was worth it. Despite the fact that I was alone I was not overlooked. This place is tucked in the back corner of the strip mall. So there's plenty of parking available. So I'm actually writing this as I sit here...dining in. Pandemic protocols are in place and the staff are adhering. I'm dining at the counter. I'm eating an early dinner so things are wide open as far as seating. At this early hour, it's"seat yourself." I love a good chicken fried steak and it's on the menu...your choice of a white gravy or brown. I chose the brown and it was fine. The CFS was a little chewy but tasted OK otherwise. For my two side I got mashed potatoes with more gravy and the dessert of the day. Today it was apple cobbler. Now the portion size of all three were a little on the small side, but not too small. The apple cobbler was good. At the counter, there are some TV monitors. But they're small. Oh, and yes. My food did in fact come on a blue plate! What's interesting is they also have a drive up window...but you have to call in your order ahead of time. So everything was pretty average in my opinion. Nothing to really complain about nor anything to rave about either. Since prices are reasonable, I have no objections to eating here again. read more

Was trying out new restaurants while visiting family. Read reviews on Blue Plate which were good so we thought we would try it. I tried the liver and onions and personally wouldn't recommend. The meat seemed like processed meat. Someone ordered the 1/2 and 1/2 liver and gizzards. Theres hope for this dish if you go early in the afternoon when they're probably fresh. My son ordered fried chicken and was totally satisfied. Mac and cheese was flavorless and mushy, the gabbage was bland, beans weee bland. Bland can be help with salt and pepper. The bigger issue I had was that our waitress said we had a smell that reminded her of a friend that has a horse farm!! We continued to joke about it amongst ourselves but I really wish I had had a side conversation with her. I would try the Blur Plate again, just wouldn't order the liver and onions. read more

Got in no waiting on a Sunday. I ordered the smoked chicken breast with Alabama white sauce, and the wife ordered grilled gulf shrimp. We also ordered fried pickles as an app. We received the pickles within 5 minutes. The pickles tasted good, and there were a lot of them. The issue I have is 45 seconds after we got our appetizer, here comes our entrées. I mean, really?? Do better. The shrimp were good. The smoked chicken was a terrible idea and executed poorly. It's a butterflied boneless breast, which is super easy to dry out, and this was dry as a bone. You would be better served by using a leg quarter. I sent the chicken back and got the liver instead. The liver is by far the thinnest liver you will ever see. This was cut on a slicer, and it was maybe 1/8" thin. The gravy was the goopy brown gravy that came out of a can or a pouch. It was not inspiring. We weren't really thrilled with this place. read more

Great place if you are looking for diner style food. Our server was amazing, personable and just the sweetest. We were Florida evacuees of Milton and really wanted to find a place pet friendly to eat that wasn't fast food or takeout to eat in a hotel room. The patio at this place was perfect. It was shaded and peaceful. Our server even brought a cup of water for our dog that we hadn't thought of. The ranch dressing is house made and fantastic! Great Southern comfort food.....lets start with nice friendly servers! Next good Southern Sweet Tea and a basket of fresh biscuits and little fried squares of cornbread! How can you improve on cornbread? Fry it!! I had he best meatloaf I have had in a long time (I am a big fan of meatloaf, it's my go-to food) and this place has it done right! A side of home-made mashed potatoes (still kind of lumpy!!) with brown gravy and a bowl of purple-hulled peas ( I think they are some kind of bean, but who am I to question that?) and the meal was finished! We had more of the cornbread/ biscuits with honey as our dessert, they were just that good! Great find! We would eat here again when in town! read more

I was too hungry and excited to see Country Fried Steak on the menu to take a picture, but it lived up to my expectations. I was happy going out of the way a few miles to eat here as I was passing through the area. The country fried steak was really good, with a good ratio of batter to steak. There was enough batter for it to be crispy without feeling like it's all batter. The mashed potatoes and white gravy could have used a bit more salt, but then some would complain about them being too salty. I ordered the fried okra crispy because it's too slimy for me otherwise. Again, there was a good balance between batter and okra. It was cooked perfectly and took care of the craving for my grandmother's. As another review mentioned, nothing comes out with the biscuits and other things didn't come with anything, like butter. Since I prefer the biscuit with my mashed potatoes, it was fine for me. If you want good, standard southern fare, this is definitely worth a stop. read more

Blue Plate used to be awesome but as of late the quality of the food has changed and not for the better. The food my wife and I had was swimming in grease and I expect a little when I eat fried food but the bottom of the plate was floating with grease. We both went home and took something to calm our upset stomachs. It's been this way on the past three trips so we are done. I highly recommend Annie Pearls over Blue Plate. Oh, Blue Plate. The classic Southern tradition that everyone loves to shower with praise. I have a differing opinion of this "down-home family restaurant". My Blue Plate adventure begins on an average Sunday during the dreaded Dothan Church Rush, a time where thousands of stuffy old people stampede like raging wildebeests into every available eatery, cafe, and drive-thru. The Blue Plate staff managed to cope with this sudden influx well, and I was seated within a few minutes of my arrival. After being seated, I was impressed by the friendly staff and casual atmosphere as I waited patiently for my food. Upon receiving my order, the renowned Smokehouse Burger, I dug in eagerly to find out for myself what made Blue Plate such a popular restaurant. However, to my surprise, my food was not at all worthy of the mountains of praise it normally got. The meat tasted undercooked and raw, like it was simply allowed to "cook" on the dirty Alabama sidewalk for a few hours as the cooks twiddled their thumbs idly. Despite my revulsion, I continued on in my quest and moved to my side item, a pretty decent serving of peach cobbler. The cobbler was a ray of hope in the dark, desolate tunnel known as The Blue Plate, and I was relieved to finally wash my palate clean of the cold, visceral taste of raw ground beef. After paying for my meal and leaving the restaurant, I was ready to simply curl up under a blanket and enjoy a classic novel. Despite my outer air of peace, I was utterly unprepared for the bloody battle that would soon ensue. The Smokehouse Burger was not content to simply ruining my meal; it was determined to ruin every other facet of my life. A piercing pain rocketed across my abdomen as I sprinted like Usain Bolt to the toilet. I braced for impact, but was caught completely off guard by the magnitude of this disaster. I gripped the rim and gasped in pain as the burger exploded outward with the force of a Peacekeeper missile, the searing pain breaking down my tolerance more and more with every squirt. After ten long minutes of absolute, unfathomable, excruciating agony, I picked myself up from the gelid porcelain and released a triumphant battle cry. The Smokehouse Burger had been defeated. To sum my experience up, I would not recommend this establishment to anyone. The service is satisfactory, but no consumer should have to pay for poor-quality food, only to be forced to drink Pepto-Bismol by the glass in an effort to avoid a prolapse afterward. read more

Had lunch here today with family. It. Was. Packed! (Which I view as a good thing) We had a short wait before a table was cleared for us. I ordered grilled chicken fingers, green beans and sweet potato fries. Everything was great. Chicken was moist, beans were seasoned well and sweet potato fries were crispy. The waitress was super sweet and friendly. She checked on us several times throughout our meal (I think her name was Jazlyn) a to-go tea got dropped and she was super helpful about getting it cleaned up and replacing it. It's really a shame how The Blue plate in Northport makes a Large Blute plate Chef salad. I just purchased this and I counted 10 small chunks of diced ham and 5 small shreds of chicken! For $9.67A Plate loaded with lettuce and thick onions. This is the 3rd time I've purchased a salad from there and it gets worse everytime! I will not be ordering from here again. A waste of money. On the downhill slide. Don't know if their problems are pandemic-related, but our latest experience was less than satisfactory. Service was marginal and food was marginal to poor. Good ol southern food and GREAT PRICES! Service is always superb here and at the newer locale on the circle south-side. Always packed out at lunch, so parking is a bit tricky especially if in a commercial truck looking to park for lunchtime. Compared to say...cracker barrel...at least Blue Plate doesnt run out of meatloaf, mashed potatoes, french fries, biscuits, and sweet tea like the one Cracker Barrel did in Mobile on the SAME VISIT! Been a loyal customer for over 5 years, looking forward to another 5 more! UPDATE: Went back Tuesday 11-13-12. Well, they have joined the cut back movement. They changed their menu last friday according to the employees. Drink glasses smaller, items removed from the menu. Portions are noticeably smaller. And at least HALF of all food listed on the menu was fried. Well it was fun while it lasted but I will not ever be returning. read more

Great southern food. A lot of fried items, so a little heavy for my tastes, but that's what you get with southern food. The fried pickles are delicious! (Eat them while they're hot, they do go soft quickly) I love that they have an option for a "vegetable" plate. More often than not it ends up being allot of starches and some veggies, but still great to have the choice. I'm sure I will be back if we visit this area more often. read more

Completely incompetent workers. I live 15 min away but husband works in Dothan so stops often to get pick up. Was really good at first, but the last few times have made me not want to go here anymore. Once we got a complete different order, called them as my husband was heading back.
