This was a fun and free activity to do. We have been to this multiple times in the past and I think it's really neat to see things I saw there then pop up on TV. In the past (pre-2020) there was also a store where you could buy stuff that was related to CBS/Showtime/Nick/CW. That store is now closed at our last visit. There is a person sitting at a desk to help get you situated for the viewings you can do. This area is located in the MGM Grand all the way back by their pool entrance. This is a great family activity. The staff member will let you know ahead of time if there is a rating for the viewing. I would absolutely go back again for a future trip. read more

'Madam Secretary' Did not know anything about this research television studio inside MGM Grand Casino. We were fascinated by the idea that we wll be participating in something where our opinion would count in what could drive the next TV show to be aired in the Fall season... not to mention all the freebie in coupons they gave after participating in the research. We were given tickets as we walked out of CSI:The Experience. We used the tickets to register at the counter in front of the center and line up about 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Once we were inside we were instructed on how to use the test pads and monitors to register our opinions. We had a chance to watch, screen, review, and rate a drama pilot show commercial-free! At the end of the 45 min preview we all had a chance to complete a 15-min questionnaire all computer screen based. Everything was done through touch screen. The whole process was approx an hour. Had we stayed another day we were invited to join a panel to critique the show. Wow! cool! Unfortunately, though, we were not able to participate on that one. Half the fun is the anticipation, curious to see if the show will make it this Fall. There are familiar faces on the drama pilot we saw. The show included Bebe Neuwirth as a co-star ("Frasier" and "Cheers"), Tea Leoni plays Madam Secretary (I remember her in "Tower Heist"), Tim Daly (from the sitcom "Wings")... and I could've sworn the young, loyal assistant was played by Erich Bergen, he played Bob Gaudio in the musical "The Jersey Boys". Let me preface this by stating that I hate TV. I'd rather waste my time on the internet (writing reviews on Yelp? :p) than watch most of the junk on TV. That being said, I was the one who suggested coming here to my boyfriend who gave me that "I can't tell if you're serious or not" look that I am oh so familiar with. She looked that surprised. Were I to base this review purely on the show we watched, this place would get 1 star. I did not like it at all. However, this review is on the over all experience, not the show, therefore it gets 5 stars. The people running the survey were Very nice & helpful. They guide you into a room and explain how you're supposed to take the survey & how you rate the show. You first start off by answering some demographics questions. You are then instructed on how to use the Neilsen Knob Box (my phrase, not theirs - though they are more than welcome to use it :D) in order to rate the show moment by moment. There's a scale from 0 to 100 where 0 means you hate it and 100 means television-induced orgasm. Yes, my meter reached 0 & sometimes even hit 100 (c'mon... it was Lilith from Cheers! Who doesn't love Lilith???). It was interesting knowing you were part of the television research process. Afterwards my boyfriend & I were approached to be a part of a focus group taking place the next day & offered $50 for our time. We agreed, but later they only picked my boyfriend because his opinion of the show was more in line with the general consensus - mine was... not. The next day I accompanied him to his focus group fully expecting to waste an hour in the casino losing money, but nope! They had a different research activity that offered $20. Neat. I passed the screening & got paid $20 to answer questions after listening to music while playing w/an iPad. In the end, I was surprised that my boyfriend & I enjoyed CBS Television City as much as we did. The $70 we got sure didn't hurt! I figured it would be one of those "one visit is enough" kind of places, but we agreed that when we go back to Vegas, we'll make an effort to go back. The guy at the desk said he might have let my 10 year in b/c she seemed ok (I assume by that he meant she would be able to sit quietly like an adult and not cause problems), but the 7 year old was definitely too young. Not that I would've wanted to let my 10 year old watch 14 year old + shows... So disappointed, and most of all, that it was impossible to tell from the website or reviews whether there was an age limit, so we walked all the way down there only to be turned away. Well this was fun! We were given the voucher when we walked into the MGM Hotel, however we had no idea how far we'd have to walk. If you enter off the Strip, the answer is A LONG way. We were supposed to see an un-aired pilot for a tv, however my friend hit the demographic for a marketing strategy so we got to be ushered into another room and seated while she watched and I kinda messed around on the net on my phone. Mike is literally the rudest person I have ever met. I used to do these surveys for fun back in 2014, I recently decided I wanted to do surveys with them again since I have some time to spare on certain days. However, when I go to the main podium outside of the survey rooms to ask if there are any (paid) study groups, Mike will always speak rudely to me and in a very angry tone of voice. I went by on Monday, and asked about the "paid study thingy" and he was like "I DON'T KNOW WHAT A THINGY IS! SPEAK ENGLISH!" His coworker Jordan was right next to me, and didn't say anything at all. On our last afternoon in Vegas I suggested my friend and I head to MGM since we hadn't been there yet, and because I'd heard about CBS Television City and figured it would be a fun way to kill an hour. This is the place where you get to be on a panelist that decides the fate of upcoming tv pilots. We were told the entire experience would take about an hour, but if you finish the survey quickly it might take less time for you (I was done in about 45 minutes). Essentially you watch a tv pilot, and while you do you turn this dial in front. It goes from 0 (you hate it) to 100 (you love it), and after the show you answer some survey questions on a computer. When you're done you're give an envelope with some coupon vouchers, including one for $10 off the CBS Gift Store (with no minimum purchase, so it's a good deal). With the inflated prices at the casino they are not a value at all, (unless you're unable to leave the casino.) Looking for a free activity to do in Vegas? Then come to CBS Television City! I went to Vegas for a business trip and was searching for free things to do since I was on a budget. Basically you sign up, do a survey, watch a TV show from CBS (a new pilot from a potential TV show or a new episode from a current show), do another survey and get awarded with coupons (and perhaps get paid in cash). My friend and I were passing through MGM in the morning and came across employees passing out free tickets. We came back later on during the day. We signed up as they took our names and checked our IDs. They had two groups around our scheduled time, with one group where you get paid in cash - you had to eligible to be in that group (fall under a certain age bracket). My friend and I qualified and chose to be in that group! Overall, it was a really good experience. The employees were friendly. The TV show my friend and I watch was really good. It was action/suspense/comedy. It's not something I would watch on a regular basis, but it was entertaining. Afterwards, we received our coupons and $50 in cash. Definitely a must-do in Vegas! Some tips and notes: - Make sure you are totally focused; no talking or falling asleep. Otherwise, they'll kick you out! We did watch a couple of shows and gave our opinion, but we came back and did it again and again. It's kind of cool to be on the cutting edge giving my opinion and then see how the shows do when they actually hit the market. For the most part, the general public has agreed with my feelings on shows. In addition, the CBS shop is full of fun CBS themed show merchandise. If you get the chance, you should, absolutely, spend a little time at CBS when you're in Vegas, especially if you need to get away from the casino and save some $$. read more

We looked up free things to do in Vegas and this came up and boy, it was right up my ally. As soon as we found out about it, we knew we had to hunt this place down before we left. So glad we made the trek over! CBS Television City is located inside of the shops/mall area of MGM Grand. It's not really that hard to find, as we assumed that's where it was, but the hotels are so massive that it's easy to get lost. The TV show we got to review was Episode 3 of The Carrie Diaries. For anyone that knows me, I have always been a huge Sex & the City fan and have been counting down the days until the premier of TCD. Once I saw Carrie's signature blonde hair, I knew what show we were watching and was extra excited -- my husband on the other hand, not as excited. While you watch, you're supposed to rate everything you see. For example, I really enjoyed the New York parts with Carrie's friend Larissa, so I would always move the dial up in the 70s-100s. There were some cheesy jokes, so I would scroll it back down to the 20s-30s. We noticed that the people in front of us didn't use their scrolly buttons AT ALL, so I'm not sure if their surveys were going to be thrown out or not, but that's the most important part! Make sure to do the scoring during the show and then you also have a survey after the show. I felt I was pretty detailed in my follow-up survey of the show. I told them what they could have made better, what was really good and what was only okay. Since I was in the "target" demographic -- chicks 25-39 -- I got asked if I wanted to come back the following day to discuss the show and make $50. That made me so excited! I'm so used to just losing tons of $$$ in Vegas, so I had to jump at the opportunity to make some cash. I went back the next day and did the Focus Group. The only thing that kinda sucked about it was it ended up taking about an hour and a half, even though they promised it would only be an hour. Since the men weren't allowed to participate, there were quite a few husbands and boyfriends that were told to come back in an hour standing there pacing and waiting. My husband was kinda miffed, but once I came out with a $50 bill, he shut up pretty quickly. One more side note: don't necessarily go if you're hoping for some sort of awesome coupons. We went for the experience but were hoping for the $5 Starbucks coupon everyone was talking about. No such luck. Not only is it free, but we got paid to do it! $20 for each of us and a hand full of coupons for restaurants mostly. Can't really argue with that! We got there and were brought into a room with several computer screens. They told us that we would be seeing some clips and then would take a survey. We watched clips from "How I Met Your Mother", "The Daily Show", and "The Pioneer Woman". The first 2 shows are already ones that I enjoy, so getting paid to sit and watch them was great! This will take up about an hour of your time, but I enjoyed myself, and the fact that you get free stuff at the end is great! Check it out if you have the time! read more

Whenever I am in Las Vegas, I will generally stop by here at least once. I generally pass by after my day is over and I'm tired from all the walking that I did on the Strip since it gives me a chance to rest my feet for free, no one will really bother you, and you get to watch some television. The way this place works for those of you who don't know is that you will screen some television shows (yet to be aired), generally new series (yet to be aired) and you will give your feedback of the television show. You will also continually turn a dial next to a computer depending on how interested you are at a particular time (never not turning your dial for a period of time so even minute adjustments to either side is suggested/recommended). For providing feedback (which lasts less than 7 minutes at the end via your computer screen), they will generally give you some coupons or money. During my week's stay in April 2016, I stopped by here once and wanted to stop by a second time before I left but didn't (reason will be stated below). The first time I passed by, they were giving some coupons for restaurants and a discount coupon to the CBS Television City store next door. They generally don't tell you what they are giving away (at least I didn't ask them) prior to lining up. I watched what appeared to be a drama not to distant in the future science fiction television show about genetics and genetic research. I found it interesting and hopefully it makes it to television. I didn't use the restaurant coupons (they were for certain restaurants in the MGM food court) but I did use the discount coupon at the CBS Television City store. The second time I passed by, they were giving away $20. They advertised this on the signs next to CBS Television City and there was a longer line-up. The line-up wasn't too long and I would have wanted to do it for $20 as well but unfortunately, it was only open to US residents. They continued to offer this $20 for the last 2 days that I was in Las Vegas during my 7 day stay in April 2016. I gave them 4 stars out of 5. I deducted 1 star just because I felt that the $20 gift should be open to everyone for their opinion. I do understand that these shows air in the US but a lot of American shows are televised in other parts of the world and in the age of the internet, these shows are often streamed as well (Netflix plays Arrow). I live in Canada and we are able to subscribe to the main American television stations (CBS, NBC, ABC, & PBS). We are also able to subscribe to CW for an additional/higher monthly fee. Even for those Canadians who don't subscribe to the American channels, the Canadian channels will often show/purchase the American shows. From the CBS/CW shows, we get Flash, Arrow, Supergirl, DC Legends of Tomorrow, Big Bang Theory, etc. which is televised on the same day/time as it is aired in the US. read more

My boyfriend and I showed up at CBS Television City, and we signed up to be a part of a focus group. They don't tell you what you are going to watch, but they give you a general idea of what genre you'll be reviewing. After we signed up, we got into line, and we didn't have to wait very long before we were taken into a room where we sat in front of our own computer. There was a big screen ahead of us, and our guide told us that during the show we were presented, we could evaluate whether we liked or disliked what we were seeing. You go into a room with say 10-12 other people and you sit at a computer and you take a survey about your tv habits and your knowledge about some upcoming new shows. Then you watch the pilot episode of one of these shows plus commercials for three others. Then, you take a survey about your likelihood to watch the show and also about what you think the other three shows are about based on the commercials. It was very entertaining and it felt fun to be "in the know" about a show that hasn't been released yet. read more

Just sign up for a screening and stand in line for what might be a few minutes, after which you are taken into a room to do fill in a form via a touch screen on a computer for what takes about 15 minutes. After that, it's about 15-20 minutes of watching a screening of a TV show, while using a controller to adjust a rating score for whenever you feel a portion of the show deserves it. For us, we got to watch a mature rated sports talk show which I thought was pretty funny and way entertaining, though I saw some of my fellow screeners weren't as thrilled and frowned at the swearing and clips of nudity shown. Guess "mature rating" didn't agree with them? Despite that, it was a good experience that was a welcome break from the mindless slots playing and was something I'd like to do again! read more

This trip to TV City consisted of one show I truly disliked and the other one which was surprisingly interesting. Our proctor, Maurice, was kind, clear in his instructions, and seemed like a genuinely cool guy to talk with. If you are a television fan, do not miss a 1hr stop at CBS's Television City. This free attraction gives you an opportunity to view an unaired pilot that CBS is testing out. I've done it twice and seen both a 20+ minute sitcom and a 40+ minute drama/action/suspense show. While watching, you have a dial in which you continually turn so it registers between a 0 and 100 (0 = you hate the show, 100 you love it). Afterwards, you fill out a short survey on your thoughts about the show and your general television viewing habits. Afterwards, you get several coupons for BOGO food in the MGM Grande (ice cream hot dogs, etc.). I was asked a few times in passing and finally relented on time I had left. I was told I would be watching a potential new TV show and give my thoughts on it. They then asked if I would be interested in another separate screening where they would compensate me $50. Seeing how I spent about that much on Uber's around Vegas I figured why not recoup that. This was a waste of time . We got free tickets walking into the MGM hotel looking for something . A nice older lady approached us and we agreed to stay and check it out. We waited in line and waited for thirty minutes I would say , walked us into the room and they have us sit with a computer right in front of you. The lady started having trouble working the dvd which delayed the showing about ten minutes . They played the show called "scorpion", show made no sense and half of the crowd was asleep ten minutes into it. A few walked out. It was ugh horrible it was so boring .
