Upon checking in my appointment, the front desk ask me to write down my name, date of birth and last 4 of my ssn. She then passed the same piece of paper to the next people and ask her to write down the same information on that same piece of paper. This is a violation of HIPPA! Maybe the Dr. Mui performed the eye exam well, but she's very impatient. She rush me during the process and commented that she has a lot of patients waiting for her. She also gave discrimination commented about people from certain demographic, which make me feel uncomfortable.That's definitely inappropriate for her to do that read more

You a good eye exam, ok. You want good customer service, no. Dr. Mui is a good optometrist and advised to see an Opthomologist for a possible eye issue beyond her expertise. Her staff, however, are terrible. A pair of glasses I ordered through them were off from the get-go. This was during the thick of the pandemic, so when I finally returned the staff "fixed" my glasses by tightening the screw and applying nail polish. This didn't last. To complicate things, the office is only open t/w/sat, so not super easy to get there with work. I returned today and asked if they would just return the glasses to be fixed. I specifically said it was not their fault. I was blamed for not bringing the glasses in sooner; I was blamed for not knowing it would be a problem; I was wrong. Now all customers aren't right but this one staffer didn't listen to me, continued to blamed me and talk over me even when the Doctor asked her to stop. Oh and she did this to a friend I referred, who was told to expect his glasses in two weeks; it took five and yes, it was his fault for not listening. I have been seeing Dr. Cecilia Mui since 2001 and she is the best optometrist yet. The prices are fair and she takes good care of her patients. She's got great staff and parking is quite convenient with the garages nearby. There are times that I can drive by and they'll drop off as no parking is available. As for the other reviews Dr. Mui might come off arrogant, but if you actually listen that isn't so. I have tried other optometrists in the area and that was a big mistake had to come back to have Dr. Mui fix correct the misdiagonitc from another optometrist. Also I thought my prescription was off or something was going on with my eyes. She will take time out of her busy schedule to ensure that I have the proper prescription and make recommendations on how to resolve my issue. She's been practicing for 20 years and she is highly experienced.. So if whether you are looking for contacts or just a pair of glasses this is the perfect place to stop by and get taken care of. If you're reading these reviews and thinking about whether or not you should make Cecilia Mui your optometrist, let me start off by saying that it's unfair if you take Selino V.'s review into consideration. What does the service he got from the Mission office? HE DIDN'T EVEN GO TO THE SAME OPTOMETRIST. The review is for the completely wrong business! --- Now that we have that out of the way, I recognise that Cecilia Mui's office is not for everybody. I mean, if you're a sensitive pansy of course who wants to believe they know better than an optometrist who has been in the business for years.... skip over this place. On the other hand, but if you want cheap prices for efficient service, I highly recommend this woman. Language: I first came here years ago with my grandpa on his recommendation because he wanted me to go to an optometrist who can speak to him as well (so he can understand what's going on). Her office is bilingual, mainly Cantonese and English. Her receptionists have passable English, but no worries - the doctor herself is 100% fluent. Customer Service: Like I said, they don't really try to cater to your sensitive emotions. They're not afraid to tell it to you like it is, so to speak. If you're trying on glasses, they won't be afraid to tell you if that pair doesn't complement your facial structure. I personally think it's hilarious, but some might think it's insulting. Like I said, not for everybody. Price-wise, it's 99 dollars for consultation as well as basic glasses and goes up for more expensive frames which is pretty good if you're like me and you don't have insurance. BEWARE!!! If possible, I would rate this a ZERO star. I'm a quite tolerant person, but this was a nightmare experience that is worth my time to share with others so they don't have to go through what I had to. First of all, I must agree with the previous review by Cingular Wire Less R. "The people there aren't very nice." Cecilia, if you ask me, comes off with quite an arrogant air. Like I said, I am quite tolerant, so I can let that go as long as I get what I need from them: my eye exam and contacts. So, they told me I can come back in 1-2 weeks for them. They told me it's usually just a couple of days, as in within the first week. I called a week later to see if they've arrived. They said it hasn't been shipped yet. I was patient, because they DID tell me one to TWO weeks. After week 2, I went into the office. They STILL aren't there. I waited another week, and apparently Cecilia wasn't there, because she was on vacation. My question: what does her being on vacation have to do with my contacts arriving in the mail, not to mention that it was an in-store pick up that I had to make anyways?!? Well, what can I do, right? I just had to wait. After Cecilia came back, which was another week, I dropped by the office again. They finally arrived. But guess what? I went home, trusting them to be professional, and responsible, so I didn't double check anything before I left the office. BIG MISTAKE! When I got home, about to open a box of the new contacts so I can finally see again, I realized they were WRONG! My left and right eye do not have identical prescriptions. I came home with one correct box, and the other wasn't even right for me! If I was careless enough to skip looking at the box and what not, I would have just been wearing the wrong contacts for my eyes. They're my EYES for golly sakes, so that was it! I was furious! I had to go back, raise my concern to them about their irresponsibility and guess what? wait another few days to get the correct ones back to me. Hm... let's see... that's over a month, nearly a month and a half for my contacts. Compensation? None. Service I received during my last visit? Terrible, and full of attitude. I'm sure they thought I was one of those difficult clients, but I feel that I had every right to raise my concern to them and lose my patience finally after a month's time. read more

Dr. Mui has been my optometrist since 2000? Anyways, she is a very friendly person with 20+ years of experience in this field making a knowledgeable eye doctor. Her prices are reasonable with a bigger selection of glasses and contacts. The glasses I'm wearing is either my 3rd or 4th pair of glasses that I've bought at her office. First time to see her. She is so smart and she knows her stuffs really well. OMG! For the first time in many years (since I have been seeing an eye doctor - since I was 10), I finally know what is meant by Peripheral vision. Who can beat that right? I can only review the service I got from the 5th Street office (71 5th @ Mission). I can't remember the man's name that examined me but I will never forget his hair... or whomever it belonged to. I have been there several times over the last three years and the office always seems to be on the brink of collapse. Always understaffed and overbooked. Often there is no one there except the guy doing the exams and he's doing everything... answering the phone, checking insurance, doing medical procedures. It's strange. On the last visit the guy said, "Your insurance only allows an exam every two years so I'll have to charge you for this one. If you want to wait I can bend the rules and give you another prescription without an exam". He then refused to hand over any records of my visits to his office. I called my insurance company later on and it turns out that he was "inaccurate" in his understanding of my benefits. Basically, he lied. I don't like this place. read more

I've been seeing Dr Mui for a very long time...maybe 30 years! Her prices are very fair and I enjoy my visits with her. She is very accommodating and easily dealt with my prescriptions when I was doing the Natural Vision thing where you get lenses less than 20/20 to exercise your eyes to improve your vision. Her selection of frames is varied and I always find a few that I like. She's very aware of the latest issues that people have with contacts...like she understood that I had become allergic to regular contact cleaning solutions and suggested the newer version with H2O2 and daily contacts (for long-term travel). I just love her and her staff, who are so friendly. Mind you, this is in Chinatown.....but I still love going there and then shop while in Chinatown. Thank goodness for Dr. Mui! I woke up this morning on the wrong side of the bed and to top it off my last pair of contacts cracked the moment I put them in my eyes. Damn it! So I had to rock my glasses (circa 2002) all day and it really irritated me. Went around to a couple of optometrists and no one could get me today except for Dr. Cecilia Mui. She scheduled me for this afternoon and considering I hadn't had an eye exam in a few years, it was definitely time! She did the exam and ordered my contacts within 40 minutes. Very painless! She then gave me a trial pair to rock out in for the next few days till my order comes in. Thank goodness! I was having weird problems with my vision and had a really amazing experience with Doctor Mui, I would absolutely recommend her to anyone who is fine with a no-frills optometry office. I have a tendency to be a bit of a hypochondriac and was worried something was seriously wrong; after calling 4 or 5 different optometrists that were covered by my insurance I was starting to lose faith that I would be able to get a same day appointment (most I would have needed to wait another week and I COULD NOT wait). Thankfully shortly thereafter I found Dr Mui and after checking the Yelp reviews (*shoutout to my yelp homies for helping me find an eye doctor*) I decided to go for it. The office is definitely not modern and the eye exam materials are mostly printed - nothing fancy. Dr Mui more than makes up for that with her competence and personality. She seemed genuinely interested in what I had to say and really took her time to get to the bottom of things, she also asked me questions about myself and my background and we ended up bonding over both going to Cal *go bears*. The eyeglass selection isn't fantastic and flashy, but I got a pair of cute modern/stylish glasses from a local manufacturer for around 130$ (very cheap!!). The office even contacted them to inquire about ordering a lighter color frame that would match my paler complexion better! Don't let the humble appearance of the office scare you away, she's really a quality Doctor and the care she has for her patients is hard to find these days. 10/10! read more

The people there aren't very nice. So I got my eye exam etc. Anyways, at the end, I picked out glasses, etc. The glasses were kind of expensive but only around 160ish. Well 159 exactly. So.....when I go over to pay, They charge me like 200, and I'm going how in the world is it 200? I understand that the eye exam and getting glasse is like 10 bucks and that there's tax but there's no way it's 200. So I asked, and she just told me I had to pay 200 and that was the end of it. I really don't like leaving a poor review for Dr. Mui, as I think she's a very smart, talented doctor, but the overall experience at her office is definitely lacking. I've been going to Dr. Mui for 6 month eye checkups for a few years now because of how close it is to my apartment (and I'm lazy). Aesthetically, the decor and general lack of upkeep is worrisome; it's easy to look in and assume that you won't get quality care. They could definitely use a new look AND a computer system. Yes, everything in the office is handwritten. All patient notes and files are just written on small pieces of paper held together with a rubber band. Not the most encouraging. The rest of the staff is rather deplorable. Not only can they barely speak English (making an appointment on the phone is practically impossible), but they tend to be rude, and have attempted to speak to me with food in their mouth during my lunchtime appointments. Dr. Mui, on the other hand, is a joy. She is quick, thorough, and informative. Her appointments are also rather quick, 20 min max for a checkup, which I really appreciate. Her lack of equipment, however, sometimes makes me wonder if she's missing something, as my previous eye doctor used many different pieces of machinery during my eye exam. Basically, if you're looking for quick and easy, and can overlook the rundown look of the office, check her out. If you're expecting a polished doctor's office, look elsewhere. read more

I've been going to Dr Mui for over 20 years. Only 3 of those years did I live in San Francisco, but when you find a Dr who is professional, kind and is easy to talk with, you stick with them. She will let you know if the glass frames you pick don't suit your face shape - that's a bonus in my book. Great service, great visits. It's a little disturbing reading some of the reviews for Dr. Mui's office. I am white man who is going to Chinatown to give my business to a Chinese owned business. I do this deliberately not outta white guilt, but because I believe in equal distribution of wealth, the same reason I go to the Mission, Japantown, or the Castro businesses. Being gay, I would rather give my cash to other sympathetic populations, rather than feed the "white privileged racist and homophobic corporate machine". It seems the complaints against Dr. Mui's receptionist's is based solely on cultural insensitivity, it's the same insensitivity that say's middle eastern men are rude, because they are verbally direct, these are illusion's of our white privileged American upbringings. I could say the receptionist is cold, but once I interact with them they respond very quickly smile, are very friendly, and some of the most helpful people I have dealt with in customer service. They were very helpful with me getting my insurance in order, and even offered for me to seek out my eyeglasses before I entered the appointment. I have been going to Dr. Mui for many year's, she is wonderful meticulous Doctor. She is kind, open to discussing my eyecare need's, good to talk too, and her office staff is very sweet and even remembered the time "I got those colored contacts" I didn't really need. This is a female owned and run business, the staff has staying power, like a family, the service by both Dr. Mui and her staff is the best at a value, that even without insurance anyone can afford. read more

Dr. Mui and her staff are lifesavers! My dear friend had a bad fall and broke his glasses. He's been in the hospital ever since. Unfortunately the hospital can't provide glasses (my friend is not able to travel to an optometrist.) Even without his prescription, Dr. Mui was able to work with the broken glasses and get him a modified pair. Because of her willingness, patience and sincere compassion for my friend's situation, he's able to see clearly as he works on his long recovery. Thank you, Dr. Mui! read more

During my exam, Dr. Mui was extremely personable and seemed quite knowledgeable. I was there for a new prescription and to be fitted with new contacts. She had a package deal for about $250 which included the eye exam and new contacts. She said that she would give me the contact prescription after I received the new contacts. As she explained, she wanted to be sure the contacts fit well before giving me the prescription. The contacts she gave me are not my exact prescription as somehow Acuvue doesn't make my exact prescription. When I told her that I'm not happy with the lenses, Dr. Mui was not interested at all in helping me. In the end, I think she just wanted to make a sale and not about customer service/satisfaction. I won't be going back to her and will not recommend her. When a friend of mine called about making an appointment, whoever answered the call asked him if he really wanted to go to the Chinatown/North Beach office since he's not Chinese.
