Cecil's was fantastic! We stayed on Balboa Island for Spring break 2026. We rented an electric bike for my 10-year old son. Cecil's staff showed him how to lock and recharge the bike, and advised him where he could bike and not bike. They made an after hours drop off easy, which helped with our uncertain vacation activities. Overall it was a perfect situation for our son to be independent in a safe environment. Saw this place on groupon, and decided to go check it out. I just had to call in to make a reservation. Everything was easy and Brandon was really nice. When I got there, there was several bikes I can choose, and all are the same price. My mother and I got the fat tire e-bikes, which were pretty cool looking. Brandon let us practice a little and we took the ferry across the peninsula. The bike pathway was a little more narrow compared to Santa Monica beach, but it was still empty enough to ride your bike (which we came at 10am on a weekday). Bikes were fast, no issues. If you take the pathway to the right when facing the beach, about 10 minutes in there is a basketball court and flat area you can bike freely on. It gets you closer to the ocean and fun to bike on. This bike shop is on Balboa island. We got there at 9:30am and were able to find free street parking about .3 miles away on a weekday in the summer. They also have nice bathrooms they allow customers to use, and are super nice. Can't wait to have another date. read more

Yesterday we were celebrating an 18th birthday down in Balboa and decided it would be fun to rent bikes and explore the island. We walked into Cecil's because it was the first place we saw considering it's right next to the auto ferry, and we were immediately greeted by the nicest people. The two men working yesterday (08/24) were amazing and super nice people. We rented two E-Bikes to ride around the island on, and had such a fantastic time. The bikes were great and super fun to get around on. Pricing was $25 an hour for the E-Bike, we took ours around for about an hour but definitely could've done it all day without losing interest. What a gem!! We had coupons to try out the ebikes but I wasn't sure if they allowed kids to ride. My nephew was thrilled that they were able to accomodate him! He is tall for his age as well. The 2 guys working were super helpful and friendly! You scan the barcode and fill out all the paperwork online. They found us 2 bikes to use and gave us instructions on how to use the bikes. Super easy and off we went! The bikes were charged, nice, and smooth. Needless to say, he LOVED it! We've rented from this place twice now. Super easy and you can't go wrong! EDIT: Great action and response taken by the owner to make sure the employee wears a mask. ------------------------------------------------- Stepping into this store is like going back in time: there are absolutely NO measures put in place to show we are trying to mitigate the pandemic. Cecil's Cyclery missed several opportunities to show a commitment to community health and mandatory public health guidelines. The store employee was not wearing a mask, there was no "clean" vs "dirty" pen distinction, and we were not offered any sort of hand sanitizer. And to top it off, the employee happily got too close to us to speak. I would have liked to see the transaction happen outside also. I can only imagine that employees' health/symptom reporting, is sub-par, too. Other businesses have successfully operated under guidelines, so it is possible for this one to, too. On the brightside, here are some good things: great customer service, electronic bikes are fully charged, good Groupon deal, ideal location. I will probably get a lot of hate for writing this, but as someone in epidemiology, I cannot be complacent with how this business is choosing to not implement MANDATORY guidelines designed to protect ALL of us. What a disgrace. I would happily come back and support this business provided that they actually follow public health guidelines. read more

As grandparents of a 14-year-old grandson, we wanted to have a special outing with him. Christian expressed a desire to go electric biking and thus we searched for the highest ranked cyclery in Newport Beach, and Cecil's Cyclery with all 5-star ratings more than filled the bill. "Brandon" was particularly patient with us geriatrics in selecting the most appropriate bike for our body types and ages. We were able to test-drive each one before taking them on the road and felt confident and safe under Brandon's careful instructions. Cecil's is perfectly situated just a half block from the ferry. Although we enjoyed the bike paths, we started to itch for greater freedom and speed, so we got venturous and drove up to 21 mph along sparsely populated residential and commercial streets and filled our lungs with the smell of the ocean and the brisk sea breezes against our faces. Stirring up an appetite, despite very little required peddling, we took our bikes to the end of Balboa Pier and had an enjoyable meal at Ruby's, all the while having an 180-degree view of the ocean with dolphins swimming within just a stone's throw from where we were seated.
