We rented bikes from Ray's Rental spontaneously with our two dogs. The friendly staff at the shop was incredibly helpful, and the pricing was very reasonable for a half-day rental. We paid $18 per bike, which included the dog trailer and a lock for just three dollars. After some research, we discovered that it was a better deal than some of the other rental places in the area on Balboa Island. The bikes were well-maintained and in great condition. Got 2 soft tops and 2 wetsuits and they were perfect for surfing! I paid around $70 total for 4 hours, which I think is a pretty reasonable price. The front desk people were two women and they were super nice and helpful. One of the wetsuits was a little too big, and they helped us find one that was snug. It's difficult to understand a business that doesn't strive to be COVID compliant and ultimately so haphazard with cleanliness and safety at this time! First, the employee was not wearing a mask. When I arrived she was close to other customers. She said she didn't have to wear a mask. Ok, so just F all of the customers then. However, my BIGGEST GRIPE is that I literally wiped what is probably mucus (boogers!) off of the kid bike seat before we got onto the bike. I could visibly see it and then began to wipe. I just couldn't believe the filth of that bike seat... especially during these times! I am not the type of yelper to take pictures and post with my review, but honestly, I will never use them again and really caution all who are concerned with spreading disease to avoid them at all costs. Long story short- I reserved two e-bikes ($60 total) on a Friday afternoon to be rented at 4pm and planned to ride for 3 hours.I live in the IE and due to traffic I had to cancel the reservation as I would have arrived too late for any ride worth the money. Per their policy I would eligible for a refund so I called to cancel and was told that the refund would need to be processed by a manager, and that my payment method would be refunded in a few days. Cool. Few days pass and not refund. So, I called the store explained my situation, the kid on the phone found my transaction and mentioned that no prior cancellation had been attempted but that he would inform a manager and that it would completed, another time, within a few days. This was my first time renting bikes from this place and I would not recommend it to anyone. I noticed the bikes weren't very pleasant looking when we arrived but since we just wanted to get a bike ride in without having to find parking again at another place we just settled for this spot (big mistake). Also asked for beach cruisers and they charge extra for the basket to be on it. My boyfriend also mentioned that his brakes didn't work well throughout the ride. A big personal thank you to Ray for carrying a beach cruiser small enough for my 4' 5" friend could fit on so she could ride Sunday. It's hard to find a place that has small cruisers or bikes for height challenged people. I could tell from the new-ish condition of the bike that it was not rented often. And another big personal thank you to Ray for only charging her $12.00 for the day. I thought this price was too low to be true--I was expecting that when she returned it, Ray would tell her, "Oh, it's only $12.00 if you don't get the tires dirty--now it's $30 because we have to clean the tires." And a final big personal thank you to Ray for staying open until 8pm! to return the bike so that we could enjoy the long day. Ray gave up his dinner with family to be there for us and we appreciate it! They did not have the free cold water when she Yelp checked in, so they only charged? her $1.00 instead of $3.00 for the use of a basket. (I would have just given her the basket.) Prices online are different then in store, the girl that seemed to be a manager of some sort probably should not be in customer service, she was very dry and borderline rude. Two Days ago, our daughters gave our family a surprise dolphin boat tour, so we stopped in for a quick Purchase of a sunhat just before it left the dock. I was told the woven hat was crushable and packed well and bought it. The next day, after wearing it on the tour and putting it in my bag, I noticed that there was a small tear where the hat met the brim when I put it on! Crushable? Indeed not. The confounding thing is that the entire hat proceeded to separate from the brim each time I touched it! We had never seen anything so crazy, so today we prepared to make the trek back to Balboa Bay to exchange this hat. I called ahead but was told by the clerk that all sales are final, regardless of my hats self-destruct mode. In essence, they would not have anything to do with it. In fact, I was told I should contact the manufacturer to boot! Long and short, rent your equipment but be mindful that you will Get the short end of the stick if a problem arises with your purchase of gear. read more
