(The onion rings are the best ever). The building is older and appliances are tired. But they work. I am content.

The caregiver said that there just wasn't enough people on the weekends and in the evening to take care of it right away so they had to sit in their assisted living apartment and smell the feces all morning and afternoon until I raised hell and finally it was cleaned up at 4:30 in the afternoon.....you can have this type of care too for 11,000+ a month!

Farmington's highly skilled and compassionate caregivers and staff provided outstanding care for my…read moremom until the end of her life. She came to live at Farmington after a difficult period. She had been in the hospital and then a rehabilitation center after suffering a hip fracture at a retirement community's memory unit in Portland's West Hills. That community looked like a high end hotel and was considered the best in the Portland area. It was expensive but I assumed it meant my mom would be receiving high quality care and that was extremely important to me. I quickly learned that a beautiful facility and high fees do not translate to good care. The staff were pleasant but did not seem connected to the residents and took care of their needs in a perfunctory manner. They were also unskilled when it came to working with memory impaired individuals. When I called to check in, they seemed to have no idea how my mom was doing and my mom was rarely bathed. This concerned me and so I ended up paying extra for personal caregivers several times a week. It was at this facility that my mom was intentionally pushed over by an 18 year-old unskilled caregiver and suffered a extremely painful and debilitating hip fracture. After rehabilitation, my mom arrived at Farmington Square. She was crying and clinging on to me as this was her third transition within a span of 2 months. I was not able to accompany her inside as Farmington was abiding by strict COVID protocols. The staff there went out of their way to help my mom feel at ease and helped her get to know other residents. They also reassured me. Whenever I called to check in on her, they clearly seemed to know and care about her and provided detailed updates. When I spoke with her on the phone, she seemed happy. Once limited visits were allowed, they were very accommodating. In June of 2021, my mom's health declined and she was placed in hospice. Initially, I was going to bring her to my home, but I realized her needs exceeded my capabilities. I felt like I was letting her down but after spending time at Farmington with her, I quickly realized that she had wonderful relationships with the residents and caregivers and it was home to her. My sisters and I stayed with my mom 24/7 during the last weeks of her life and we were able to observe the consistent high quality care that my mom as well as all the other residents received. These outstanding caregivers were all emotionally mature individuals who were naturally compassionate people. They were attuned to my mom's needs and she was receptive to their caregiving because they were well-trained and had developed a trusting relationship with her. The staff and administrators even took care of me and my sisters. They brought in trays with coffee, ice water, and snacks and sat beside us as we struggled to say goodbye to our mom. Through these experiences I have seen the very worst and the very best of care for a loved one. Farmington exemplifies the very best by focusing their efforts on hiring extraordinary caregivers, which meant that my mom was always clean and comfortable and experienced the joy of meaningful relationships and feeling loved at the end of her life.

Like the other two reviews, we too, were impressed by the tour, the friendly host/salesperson. However, upon move in, it was so disappointing. Then it got worse. The constant turnover was incredible. In the 2 years we had to deal with them, there were 4 different head nurses. 3-4 general managers, and countless changes of med techs and aids. I can count on one hand the people that actually treated my parents with kindness and respect. My mother was in a wheelchair, so aids would help with toileting. She would sometimes be left on the toilet for 15-30 minutes. She was also injured by an aid, with that incident being reported to the police/elder services. During a Covid outbreak, they were quarantined and left in their apartment for 3 days after they had been cleared. No one bothered to tell them they could resume going to the dining room. They did not start medications as directed by a Dr for 3 days, so my mother was very ill. Laundry "service" was a joke, as was the cleanliness of their space. They paid for cleaning and laundry services, and bed making. They were neat and tidy people, they did not live in a messy, chaotic environment. This was stressful, particularly for my mother. I could go on and on. Pricing went up every single time the Ackerly could legally raise them. The head nurse and the administration appear to have no interest in the care, or lives of their residents. Billing once took 4 months to receive an invoice. It costs thousands and thousands, for sub par care, in a very attractive setting. Once my father went in to hospice, we never saw the RN. The night he passed away, an aide and a med tech were in the room. They let us know he was gone, and left the room. We never saw anyone from the Ackerly again. Hospice had called a mortuary, we cleaned out the apartment over 3 days. On the last day, just as we were leaving, the acting general manager stopped us, offered condolences (she had walked right past us for the 2 prior days) and thanked me for "trusting the Ackerly" with my parents. I did not trust them with my parents. And, as mentioned before, will feel badly about it for the rest of my life. My parents were elderly, and in the assisted living community. They were also intelligent, social, and kind and funny. They deserved and paid for much more than they got. The cost is astronomical, and the care is sub par. Find your parents, loved ones a better place. This is not it.

Also when I had delays with Medicare delivering my moms medical bed Mary allowed us to use one of the beds at the facility. I was immediately surprised at the building architecture and surroundings and upon entering my room, I was greeted by sunlight, clean, fresh, and a great room, kitchenette and bedroom, large roll in shower and bathroom. I was greeted by name and even one of the residents was holding me a place for lunch. The executive staff is very professional but warm and kind. The support staff is equally amenable. I have never had anyone be short with me upon a request. The activities director is amazing in the number of activities she organizes. If you are looking for a place for a family member or yourself, this facility is a nice size. Not too small, not too big. I would definitely return here in the future if necessary for my well being. One of my best friends just retired as an ombudsman for retirement centers. Oswego Place did not know who she was of course and she said to me "the atmosphere here is positive and welcoming."
