Every summer, I look forward to the Traverse City Film Festival (often referred to fondly as TCFF…read morein my family). Without a doubt, this is one of the most amazing events of the year in an already beautiful city. Even though Michael Moore is one of the founders, this film festival has proven to be incredibly diverse in its selection. The movies range from comedy to drama, action to horror. There are documentaries that will open your eyes to a whole new walk of life, there are moves that make you think about where your life is going. Some movies will make you laugh one minute, and have you in tears the next. Some might think, so why TCFF over Cannes or Sundance? Traverse City is just a normal town, with normal people. You don't need to be a celebrity to get tickets, or even to see other celebrities. There are events all over town, including places for children to go while the adults attend movies. There are panels, consisting of some of the directors, producers and actors in the movies, helping answer some pressing questions. The first year of the film festival, there was a fear that it would have the theme of "Bowling for Columbine" or "Farenheit 911", but I have gone for 5 years and never seen a political film (by choice). Between the FREE movies at the Open Space (including the Dark Knight and Mrs. Doubtfire), and the vast array of movies, this festival is definitely a family fun vacation and an educational experience! Five stars isn't enough!

The Charlevoix Chamber of Commerce organizes the Apple Fest during October each year, and it takes…read moreplace along the main drag in downtown Charlevoix on Bridge Street, in the park along the shore of Round Lake. The main focus is the apples by the bushel load and other locally-grown items, but the art fair is also a great draw. There must be about 100 booths at this fair. Local farms were selling apples and freshly-made donuts. The local Lions Club was selling hot dogs and fries. I noticed that many of the craftspeople at this fair are from nearby towns, and that a lot of the items they were selling were very reasonably priced. I'm more likely to actually purchase something from an art fair when it doesn't cost hundreds of dollars. I love handcrafted, unique items and this seems like a great place to get them.

There is food, music, massage, painting en plein air, learning, pick your own, samples and shopping. Tips: 1. If you go, take the earliest car ferry from the main land that you can get. (4 hour wait if you don't) 2. Walk on the boat, don't take your car. 3. Pay the $7 for Lavender train ride and be prepared to wait around ALOT for the next train. I found this to be the most unorganized part of the festival. The boats ran every 20 min but the train sat around full waiting for no known reason. 4. Don't expect this to be a non stop activity laden festival. I think they want you to kick back and relax. 5. We spent approximately 4 hours and did/saw everything including lunch. It is not necessarily a full day activity, so plan to walk around the island or take one of their tours. 6. Bring cash and cards. I thought lunch was reasonable. $10 for a large green salad with chicken and dried cherries. $35 to paint en plein air and $50 for a massage. So get on the island early and relax in the fields of Lavender. See the whole island.

But even if you aren't there during that time stopping at the lavender field is worth the stop the smell in the shop is amazing. Lots of little lavender items to buy plus they have different chocolate some with lavender some without and some ice cream some of the lavender we tried the lavender ice cream which was Vanilla with a flowery aftertaste. You can definitely see if lit for free. I got to scoop because hey you're in lavender field why not? Good place to buy a souvenir to take home... Because he doesn't like lavender.

The pieces we enjoyed this wonderful afternoon were: Suite in G Minor, Op. 71 - Moritz Moszkowski, Trio on Chassidic Melodies by Paul Schoenfield, and Piano Quartet in C Minor, Op. 13 by Richard Strauss. The middle piece by Paul Schoenfield, was particularly enjoyable as it is in a unique and lively style which compliments the more traditional chamber music we usually hear. The Moszkowski piece was also very moving and awe inspiring, while Richard Strauss was the perfect way to end this concert, leaving us mystified by the talent of the musicians. The people of Midsummer's Music, from administrative staff, to the organizing vision of Jim Birkenstock, to the myriad gifted yet humble musicians, is what makes this series so special. We can often find concerts held in magnificent venues, from concert halls to library auditoriums, but seldom can you chat with the musicians to learn what inspires them to produce such beautiful music! Come to Door County, Wisconsin. Enjoy the nature, the restaurants, the galleries and the people. Come to Door County to take in some equally breath taking music!
