This is a VERY COOL venue! I have been to concerts,…read moresymphonies and small venue presentations all over the USA, but I have never been a venue like this. The Listening Room is truly for LISTENING. For a small donation of $20 you are allowed to listen to artists perform in a intimate venue. Prior to the concert, the owner Jim Pennington, informs you of the rules. To paraphrase Jim, "If you want to talk, drink and be rude, go down the street to a bar." I ADORE this concept of "no talking" while someone is performing. How often have you been to a venue where you couldn't hear the performer due to all the background noise? NOT happening here! Jim is the consummate host, selling assorted beverages and CD's of the performer with proceeds going to the artist. I highly recommend this venue to anyone in the Mobile or surrounding area. I do not live locally, only visiting once a year, but TLR has become a "must do" for our trips to Alabama.

What an awesome experience!!! I was invited to join some people for a show at the listening room…read morewhile I was driving through Mobile in June. I wasn't sure what to expect, but the feeling of the listening room was so unique and intimate- I loved it! The artist was a local star, but I knew nothing about him. Every song he played was so personal and wonderful. The crowd was respectful and everyone had their phones away during there concert. I was told that the Listening Room is special in this way, because people go there to listen- not to talk or stare at their phones. The set was almost 2 hours, but it felt much shorter due to the small and intimate space the music was being played in. I seriously loved going to a show at the Listening Room and I'd love to go back if I'm ever in Mobile!

It's a small but they have good entertainment. A selection of beer is available, but it's mostly for "listening". Sit back and enjoy!

I have been told by others they won't go there because of this bizarre practice. I went there with my wife. I didn't like being patted down hard at the front door like I was a convicted felon. Once inside, the bartenders are friendly and it's probably the fastest service in downtown Mobile I have seen. The bathrooms are nasty just like any bar. The low rating is for having to give all your personal information and pat down like a felon. The bar itself is 5 star.

It was my girl Rachel T.'s birthday and we did a day just for her. This is where we ended our night, on a high note, I might add. When we first walked in I was totally impressed with the band. They were laid back and chill, and actually played a few songs better than the original artists. I knew we had come to right place. There was quite a lively crowd of all ages, and they weren't staggering down drunk. There were a few tables, plenty of bar stools, and a large dance floor. They had a decent selection of beer and all the liquor necessary for any mixed drinks we might have wanted. The prices weren't bad. When the bartender found out it was Rachel's birthday, he bought her a shot. Way cool, Bartender Dude, way cool. Actually, the entire crowd there was pretty cool. My only complaint, and I know it was Saturday night in a bar, but the ladies room ran out of toilet paper, and that's just gross. Not to mention, it's also bad for the plumbing because they should know we're going to use hand towels. Other than that, if you want to go dance to live music in Mobile, this place would be my first (possibly only) choice of places to do just that.
