This is definitely my favorite rock show! It totally rocks! And there aren't even any bands. Just…read morerocks. It's gritty and real, far less commercialized than gem shows you typically find at fairgrounds. A large majority of the vendors here are true rockhounds, who have a passion for what they do. Many of these guys are the ones that found the rocks they are selling. So you will find much more raw material here, bulk rock, and other wholesale-type deals. There are giant amethyst stalagmites, barrels of agates, large quartz crystals, fossils, and every kind of stone you can imagine. Since the people are real and own the stuff they are selling, the prices can be negotiable, too. So if you like to haggle, haggle away. Especially if you are buying large amounts of stuff. The show is also huge, and it's unlikely that you could finish in one day. I know there's no way I could, and didn't when I passed by even though I wished for more time. Maybe it's because I have always marvelled at the amazing number of permutations that nature creates with what is essentially, dirt. Millions of years in the ground cooking and bam, awesome crystals, intricate patterns, beautiful colors. I only made it through about one third of the show in two hours. Overall, if you are up for an adventure and looking for something fun to do, the Desert Gardens Rock, Gem, and Mineral Show will definitely be worth the trip. Five stars all the way.

Tyson Wells can be best described as a swap meet focused on rocks and minerals. But unlike the Desert Gardens show ( down the road), which is focused only on rocks and minerals, the Tyson Wells show has many more vendors selling junk items made in China. That's probably the biggest negative about this show. You'll find everything here from animal skulls, to glass pipes ( like the ones you see on Live PD), and they even have a grocery store that sells mostly expired food items that were discarded from grocery stores. Perhaps one of the saddest things I saw was that one vendor was selling stalagmites and stalactites in one of the dark alleys. It's illegal to collect, buy, and sell stalagmites in several states. So should you still go here? If you're driving the 10 in January, definitely! It's free to park and visit and they have so many interesting things for sale here. You'll probably spend more than hour here, but it's worth it. Note - Earlier in the week we visited the Desert Gardens down the road and if you're looking for strictly rocks, minerals and fossils to add to your collection that's a better choice. The Desert Gardens show was family-friendly, Tyson Wells is like a true swap meet so you should treat it as such with your kids. Tip - You MUST visit the actual Tyson Wells Storefront. It's on the main street and you can't miss their sign. It's mostly a gift store and a MASSIVE selection of board games. The owners are soooo friendly to kids...

Here's one review that deserved a revisit…read more We trek to Arizona several times a year, and without fail, we stop in Quartzsite for gas both coming and going. Reader's Oasis is always deserving of a visit should we make it through town during the daylight hours (we rarely do, since we're usually hauling ass in the middle of the night.) Yes, the owner is a nudist so BEWARE if you are one with Victorian sensibilities or are bringing in kids you don't want exposed to the clothing optional world. Often, as we're pulling up, Paul Winer is out front, bare butt to the street, arranging the discount and free books on the tables in the sun. Last weekend he was sporting a vibrant, rainbow-colored codpiece that just draws the eye in. He's a really cool guy, down-to-earth. Of course, you've probably got to be. To speak of the shop itself, the place is completely legit. Paul and his wife stock a very wide variety of rare and used books and collectors' items that are well worth the treasure hunt. Reader's Oasis' strength is in its sci-fi/fantasy and non-fiction sections. If you've got an interest in the local indigenous people, paleontological finds, Old West, and such, you're definitely in luck. Be sure to buy a commemorative bookmark of Sweet Pie in all his tanned glory for 50 cents. While signs out front say he's photo-friendly, it feels weird asking him outright to pose for one.
