This review is specifically for Gonzo Tennis Academy, hosted by Longmont Athletic Club. We've…read moretried out a few kids tennis lessons and coaches in different surrounding cities, but Gonzo Tennis Academy is the BEST. Why? Because for my 5 year old and 7 year old kids, they get bored easily and act up, but Coach Gonzo and his brother Coach Diego are FUN and get the kids hitting! My 5 and 7 year old kids have dramatically improved with their technique in the 1 session we've been here and they always wind up laughing so much during their lesson. They talk to the side line parents for quick 10 second tips and advice during the lesson. Everything is broken down for the kids and easy to understand. We've had "tough guy" coaching techniques before, and they just aren't appropriate for this young age...usually my kids get discouraged with that kind of coach attitude. I travel all the way from Broomfield to Longmont because it's totally worth it and very reasonable prices for (non-member) tennis lessons. Oh, and did I mention lessons are *inside* a tennis bubble? Our last tennis session at Broomfield Tennis and Swim club was outside and we often had to cancel lessons due to poor weather, and I just didn't have the time to make up the lessons on alternative days. That, and my kids just hated the Colorado cold and windy days. They mentally gave up on playing before the lesson. We can play all year long and my boys don't have a huge lull between seasons. It's really the best overall place for little kid tennis lessons! Just don't take my 2 spots from my boys, okay? ;D

She is now 3 and can swim the length of a lap pool and absolutely blows everyone away when we take her swimming anywhere. I can't tell you how often we get asked where she learned to swim. Most importantly, she knows how to save herself if she falls in water. Turning to her back to float when she's tired is now second nature. My daughter has been with Kristen the entire time and I 100% recommend her, though I'm sure there isn't a bad instructor in the place as they use this facility as at least a nation wide training facility for instructors.

The older one progressed smoothly through the program with no challenges. He has higher functioning Autism and is strong and exceptionally coordinated. My second son has a more severe Autism diagnosis and progressed to a certain point, when the teacher informed me they wanted to take a break with him. That was fine with us but when we reached out to restart his lessons, Swim Float Swim told me that they would "pass on him". This meant they no longer wanted to work with him nor any willingness to discuss options for him. Having been a teacher in the arts for decades, my policy has been to welcome all populations in my classes, including those with disabilities. It was unthinkable to me that Swim Float Swim would tell any family they would work with one child in the family but "pass on" the other (sibling). However, that is exactly what happened to me at Swim Float Swim. With his more severe Autism, my second son needs a little longer than other children to learn. My offers of more money or to provide a therapist to assist the teacher with his goals, Swim Float Swim still declined to finish my son's swim lessons saying "if they didn't learn within the time frame then we have to discontinue with the student, that's just the way it is." The owner of Swim Float Swim must know this policy excludes learners with delays, excludes my son from equal access and opportunities, and is illegal according to the ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act.) My son was gaining skills but he didn't achieve a result within their arbitrary timeframe so he is no longer able to participate in any future classes there. After posting my experiences with Swim Float Swim on a Facebook group particular to parents of special needs children in Boulder County, other members of the group posted multiple stories of having the same terrible experience with the owner in slightly different versions. One story included the owner telling a mother "Something is wrong with your child, I can usually get them to float by now." Another family had their pediatrician call and remind the owner of the ADA law, but the policy was not changed. Each of these heartbreaking stories left the parents in tears and feeling ashamed. It is hard to believe that Swim Float Swim has remained in business with such a discriminatory and illegal policy in regards to rejecting special needs children, expelling them from swim lessons because they have special needs and take longer to learn.

Decades ago my younger son took gymnastic classes there. My husband has used their pool for Scuba trip prep swims to test out their equipment. Also my kids and many of their friends had birthday party events there in the 80s. A friend of mine invited me to stop in and try out their fitness classes for seniors. The program is free to us, though most of the participants have some form of support from their medicare supplement policy (Silver Sneakers membership) and I assume that benefit supports the program financially. Nothing is ever "free" in the sense that it is just like being out in nature. There is a large building and many staff to support. All the staff we met in the process of signing up and get information on programs were very pleasant, efficient and supportive. The teacher of the class was a very positive and talented young woman who clearly understood her participants very well. The music was such fun. Some was the a similar play list to what I had in classes in the late 80s & early 90s, when I last took an indoor fitness program at other locations under the Jazzercize label. Many disco dance songs, new in that era, retro classics now. Also some pop songs of the 60s for some of us and cool down relaxing folk and ballads focus too. I was surprised yet pleased to hear Joan Baez "Diamonds and Rust" unique to a class like this I think. Parking is a bit complicated at the center, as the lot out front has very small spaces and is filled quite early in the day, but there is more room along the sides with slightly larger spaces and now that we know that, we will try there first next week.
