Dr. Donald Hope refused to see me after a single appointment. Our first appointment was a very pleasant and he recommended injections for my back pain. Unfortunately that didn't help with my back pain. After that I needed a follow up appointment and his nurse said he can't see me. Why? No answer was provided. I am extremely disappointed with him since original I thought he was a good doctor. Very disappointed that he refused to see me for the 2nd appointment to discuss my condition. read more

Dr. Hope is a fantastic neurosurgeon and I have seen many successes on the operations he has performed. What I like about him the most is that he doesn't appear to be "cut happy" and only reserves those for either the last resort or for those with severe problems like extrusions. Dr. Hope performed lumbar surgery -- partial discectomy and lamenectomy at L4 L5 three years ago with moderate success. Surgery was open as opposed to micro and resulted in an infected incision which required a longer recovery period. Post surgical physical therapy was not recommended. I was told I'd be back to a normal lifestyle (gym routine, golf, etc.) after the surgery but never got there. Each time I'd attempt to strengthen or perform any reasonable exercise I'd experience a setback. I returned today to consult regarding newly ruptured L5 S1 and had the worst experience I've ever had with a doctor let alone any service oriented business. I waited an hour for an 8:45 am appointment. When seen, Dr. Hope barely glanced at my MRI before concluding I needed surgery (which I knew). He asked how I felt, but did not perform any reflex or range of motion tests nor did he did not address what I should expect post-surgery. His demeanor was curt, rushed and as if he couldn't be bothered. My questions regarding the pros and cons of open vs. micro surgery, physical therapy, scheduling a time for surgery, and obtaining a second opinion were all answered dismissively as if I was wasting my time and more importantly his. Given how I was treated by Dr. Hope for a scheduled office consultation I can't imagine having him perform my surgery again. If this is how he treats patients during his office consultations I can only imagine his demeanor in the O.R. Rushed, detached and completely impersonal. read more

After being seen in the emergency room in January 2017 it was recommended that I see Dr. Hope for follow up. After several visits and an MRI it was determined that I would need ACD with fusion. I had a bulging disc pressing on my spine. Dr. Hope explained everything. He listened and never made me feel rushed or pressured. When my husband had questions he took the time to meet with him and carefully explain my condition and answer all his questions. I owe EVERYTHING to Dr. Hope. For two and a half years I dealt with excruciating pain and numbness down my left arm that worsened to the point I was practically disabled. Doctor after doctor said to me "Go to PT", "Take this medicine", "Your MRI doesn't show anything severe so there's no reason to operate" - meanwhile, I progressively lost the use of my left arm. I couldn't drive, sleep, eat, cook, work, etc. My pain management doctor had tried cervical steroid injections, rhizotomies (burning the nerves in my neck), facet injections, trigger point injections - literally everything short of surgery. After failing two epidurals he said it's now time to go see a neurosurgeon. He recommended Dr. Hope. I always make it a point to get at least three opinions and go with the opinion that two docs share. The first doc at INOVA blew me off (Dr. Hamilton). The second doc reluctantly would do the surgery and he wanted to fuse three of my cervical vertebrae (C3 - C6) which was a big surgery and would leave me with somewhat limited movement in my neck. Dr. Hope was the final doctor I saw and said to me after hearing my saga of care for the past two years looked me straight in the eye and said "You poor thing - you're practically disabled and you're still trying to make the best of everything. I can fix you. I can help." He said there was no reason to do three levels and told me we would do the level that correlated the most to my symptoms, saying that if things worsened we could always go back in and do more. I got scheduled for surgery within three weeks and when my insurance company originally denied it because they said my MRI wasn't bad enough, Dr. Hope did a peer-to-peer review and got it overturned so I could have it done. I went into INOVA Fair Oaks Hospital on 2/22/17 a broken down, half useless person. I came out on 2/23 a woman who was put back together again. For the first time in two years I had total use of my arm. I could feel things with my fingers. I cried because I was so overcome with emotion. When I saw Dr. Hope for my 2 week checkup, he explained to me that my MRI didn't show all of the damage that was inside my neck - bone spurs that were wrapping around my spinal cord and fragments of blown disc everywhere. He told me I could've been put out of my misery months before if someone would've listened to my complaints. Within six weeks, I had total range of motion in my neck. Within three months, I was back to light exercise. Within five months, I was cleared to go back to full exercise and to go about my life a fully functional individual. Due to being rearended at 40 mph at the end of August (six months to the day after surgery) and the immediate return of presurgical nerve symptoms, I am pursuing care with Dr. Hope again because all of my symptoms came roaring back. They correlate to the vertebrae immediately beneath my surgery site. I may end up having to have my neck operated on again but that's okay - I trust Dr. Hope implicitly with my care. TL;DR version: Dr. Hope is a neurosurgical god amongst men. If you are broken, he will fix you the right way. He truly cares, which is rare to find someone of his caliber in today's healthcare community. read more

Dr. Hope is the most caring, competent and efficient physician with whom I have dealt in a long time. As a result of hereditary spinal issues, I have had three surgeries [by Dr. Hope] over a 20 yr period. Every case has been the same - gather info, discuss options, act and follow-up. Every case has turned out as well as my own pathology can allow, and even some follow-up pain does not reflect on the DOCTOR, it is just what happens. The person who wrote about KARMA was unnecessarily viscious. How could you DARE say that a tragic event in a doctor's life is fair through the [clearly misunderstood] belief in karma? What is your problem, you are truly some kind of sociopath who needs a therapist not a surgeon. Shame on you. I ruptured 4 disc in my neck and they were pushing on my spinal cord and pinching my nerves. I was referred to Dr Hope by my chiropractor , pain management doctor and physical therapist. I was in so much pain and no non-surgical procedures seemed to help me. I ended up having my C 4-7 fused, boy was i scared! His office staff, including his AWESOME surgical nurse and scheduler) went out of their way to ensure i was supported and comfortable, especially since i had no family nearby to assist. Dr Hope is so smart, patience, great bedside manner and he really CARES! After surgery I developed vertigo and between Dr Hope and his Surgical Nurse they were very responsive. Unfortunately, I was sent to the ER a few times about the vertigo symptoms and Dr Hope came up personally to check on me to ensure I wasn't having a stroke on Father's Day without hesitation!!! When we first went to see Dr. Hope he was very concerned about the amount of pain my husband was in and quickly diagnosed him as having a bulging cervical disk. Surgery was scheduled immediately and my husband and I were extremely grateful that Dr. Hope would be able to help. We had already been to a neurologist who concluded that the bulging disk was not significant and gave a vague diagnosis of a neurological disease causing the nerve pain that we would just have to wait out. Dr. Hope and all of his staff were extremely professional and helpful before surgery and put us at ease. I believe if things had ended there and the surgery had been the fix I would give Dr. Hope a higher mark. Following surgery, my husband was still in a great deal of pain, including nerve pain. Dr. Hope and Christine, his nurse practitioner, were very responsive and saw my husband for several followup appointments to try to determine if healing from the surgery was causing the pain. When Dr. Hope could not determine the source of the pain, he recommended that my husband return to the neurologist. This was certainly the right thing to do. The reason I am not giving Dr. Hope a higher grade is because of what happened at our last visit. Dr. Hope was out of ideas on why the pain was persisting and after a quick visual exam of my husband's upper body concluded that he likely had ALS and walked out of the room. This disease carries a death sentence of 3-5 years. This of course left my husband and I in tears on the ride home. There were never any followup phone calls following this visit. As it turned out, my husband did have a different neurological disease which will improve and did not require surgery. The surgery aggravated his condition. If you are going to Dr. Hope for surgery, be certain you need surgery. It is the patient's responsibility to make this decision and obtain multiple opinions. Dr. Hope may be an excellent surgeon, but a patient needs to be realistic about what to expect. read more

This Dr. did a very BAD surgery on me 13 years ago. I'll never forget it. Initially, everything started out great -- until the results of the surgery went awry. May G*d, help you IF you have a problem AFTER the surgery, and he's on vacation. He wouldn't give me the time a day, and even threatened me. ("If you don't stop calling me, I'm not going to work with you.") However, he DID have a boating accident after he messed up my neck. K-A-R-M-A-. I went thru H*LL after my surgery. Dr. Hope did my back surgery on New Year's Eve. He was recommended by a friend who is a nurse in Fauquier. I have had a few surgeries, but this was my 1st back surgery. Run as fast as you can from Dr. Hope, who is known by many surgeons as "speedy." He removed half of my L5 vertebra to remove a piece of a ruptured disc and didn't fuse the area, which lead to more pain. He didn't fuse because he does not have the training. Instead of warning me that I might be at risk for an unstable spine as a result he kept quite. As a result in less than 18 months my spine became unstable, the vertebra slipped out of place and I had to have a two-level lumbar fusion. What is important to know is that Dr. Hope operates at lightening fast speed, often taking the fastest route instead of the best. My operation typically takes two hours. He did it in 35 minutes and REFUSED TO ADMIT ME TO THE HOSPITAL. No matter how much my husband argued he said no. We later learned every patient who has a laminectomy, facetectomy and discectomy is always admitted. Our insurance is gold star so to this day we can not figure out why. BE WARNED after your operations your first visit will be with a nurse, not him. When you finally see him you'll be lucky if he spends more than a few minutes with you. At one visit while in the middle of asking my first question he got up to leave. Honestly he never spent more than four minutes with me. If you continue to have pain he usually avoids ordering additional scans because he does not want to deal with problems. I finally went to John Hopkins to learn why I had more pain and was diagnosed quickly. After my third follow-up visit a number of patients in his waiting room were all complaining about the same shabby treatment. Six years ago I was in horrible pain from my lower back down one leg. I saw Dr. Hope, and although I was terrified about having back surgery, I was very confident that he would be able to do the job. Not only was the laminotomy a complete success, but he was spot on about recovery timing and issues and everything healed perfectly. Saw Dr. Hope after suddenly having excruciating pain in my upper back, neck and down my arm. I spent one month sleeping in a recliner. My research on the internet gave me an indication of what the problem was. After an MRI confirmed the problem, I scheduled surgery with Dr. Hope. He performed what is known as an ACDF on C5, C6, and C7. Going into the surgery, I must admit I was a little nervous. What helped me tremendously was everyone I talked with at the hospital went out of their way to let me know he was the best at this. My friends, who recommended him, indicated the same. Dr. Hope-Arrogant-Rude-Condescending-Money Hungry-Dishonest-Liar! Dr. Hope Is a pocket doctor. That is a doctor who is in the pocket of the insurance company and the insurance lawyers for money. Serious money! Dr. Hope performs independent medical evaluation's, IME's, and will say anything to make more money. I witnessed him do and Independent medical review in just a half an hour and made probably $1500 or more. That's over $3000 an hour. That's Insane Money for a lying doctor who is hiding behind his credentials and not telling the truth about patients he has never treated. Whatever happened to the Hippocratic oath that doctors are supposed to live and work by? I was recently seen by Dr. hope for an independent medical evaluation. The appointment was scheduled for 9:45 AM. After filling out some paperwork I finally got to see the doctor, I was finished by 10:03 and in the parking lot texting my wife that I Was DONE. She said are you kidding me? No Way!!! Dr. Hope picked out and looked at only two of my old films from 2003 - these films are 10 years old. He chose 10 year old films from a stack of about 100 newer films to choose from. He just spent about 10 minutes dictating @ Himself in front of me and my daughter. Dr. Hope asked me some stupid questions, Watched me take 3 to 4 steps on the floor and measured my legs. Dr. Hope never examined my hands my feet my neck or my back. I have had four major surgeries in the past 10 years These major surgeries where done on my neck and my back. I have two incisions in the front of my neck from two C-spine surgeries and My back has been cut up like a fish for my neck to the middle of my back to the lower part down to my butt. I have serious scar tissue all over my back area and Dr. hope did not even have me take off my shirt. I have a Titanium cage placed in my neck and a Spinal implant in my c-spine and Thoracic spine area with wires running the length of my back with the stimulator and battery about the size of a pack of cigarettes under the skin in my lower back! He spent no more than five minutes with me and he was done with this independent medical evaluation ha ha! What a joke and a waste of my time driving and sitting in Washington D.C. Traffic! This was the second time I have seen Dr. Hope , again a five-minute review and the last review was grossly wrong, had many errors and they threw it out in court. I don't know if Dr. Hope is a comedian but his practice is a joke a major joke! Let's say I was not happy with his review! I am certainly not laughing at this practice of IME's this is MY LIFE! and MY CHRONIC PAIN! Dr Hope basiclly stated that all of the doctors that I've seen for the past 11 years were wrong? I have seen 3 of the top surgeons in the Washington D.C area who did surgery on me. I have been up to see a dozen doctors at John Hopkins Hospital. I have seen ten doctors at the National Spine and Pain centers around northern VA. He basically said I was a liar and faking my pain. He also wrote something strange about me like, I was going to commit suicide by the scratches he saw on my hands and lower arms! I had bite marks on my arms from a new puppy we had just gotten for Christmas who is teething now How Cute :). I spoke to the doctor about these marks and we even talked about dogs and growing up with the best dog ever the Chesapeake Bay Retriever, but he did not write any of this down in his report. He wrote this strange note instead: "He has traumatic skin changes to thumbs bilaterally. They look like they have been made by excessive use of a cutting instrument, such as a razor blade (using an X-ACTO knife or box cutter)." What kind of person or Doctor would make up Lies or tell misleading statements to discredit another respectable person or try to damage his family that he does not even know or even care about with regards to his own profession of other caring great doctors but only for $ MONEY! How Sad that in today's economy Doctors will steep lower then Lawyers and Issuance companies for Chartis - AIG to save some MONEY! Dr. Hope should be under State and Federal Agency investigations for his role in Independent Medical Evaluations (IME's) for insurance companies like Chartis - AIG these reviews are dangerous, misleading, not true, and bad for all patients rights!!! This practice is a great way for insurance companies to screw anyone out of medical benefits, medical coverage, and deny financial compensation thats needed of any kind. Dr. Hope actually wished me good luck with my case and had a smile on his face while stabbing me in the back, what a great sympathetic surgeon he is. Spending less than 2 min with a patient? I have been diagnosed with a herniated disk that may or may not need surgery. My primary physician referred me to Dr. Hope at his 3016 Williams Drive office in Fairfax VA. The courtesy of the receptionist is great, my waiting time was less than 5 minutes. I met with Dr. Hope for less than 2 minutes and the second minute was because of my questions. He looked at my MRI told me I have a small hernia that may not need surgery. He told me that he will send me for shots that may help with the hernia and in 1 year we should see the results in a new MRI. He said that the list of doctors will be at the reception. He opened the door and said good bye. What is going on with doctors that they don't longer spend any time at all with patients? I had to stop Dr. Hope's intention by presenting him with some question: can I exercise? Can I tell you what kind of physical activities I'm exposed to? Is there anything on my side I can do to help with this problem? Why I don't need surgery? What are the chances of full recovery? How do the shots work? It hurts while I stay seated, is there anything I can do to help with it? In each case he gave me very short answer and he seemed to be more than anxious for me to leave. Personally I think a great doctor is made out of two elements: his professional expertise and his ability to communicate and resolve questions with patients. I read that Dr. Hope has a great reputation and he was mentioned in several magazines. However today I was able to verify that he lacks of any humanitarian side. I saw Dr. Hope a little while back for pain in my lower back and shooting pain down my sciatic nerve. I was referred to a neurologist after visiting numerous other doctors for the pain. He spent a total of 10 minutes with me, making me do a number of "exercises" half of which involved moving my arms around - why? He basically dismissed me as faking it because I was "too flexible to be experiencing this kind of pain." I explained that I was taking yoga b/c that seems to help with some of the pain. And anyway, why would I spend money to go to a doctor if I'm not in pain? He was condescending and gave me no help at all. I would NOT recommend him. read more

I cannot say enough positive things about my experience with Dr. Hope and his staff, e.g., Christine, his nurse practioner, Theresa, surgery coordinator, Bobby, receptionist. This entire staff is a quality at the top of practices, not to mention the kindness and patience of the staff I have never experienced in any other medical office, and I have been to many. Dr. Hope and Christine have a confidence and reassurance in their presence and words that, after only a 15 minute, I was ready to put myself in their hands for a cervical disectomy and fusion. They were both very calm, very matter of fact and very confident. My reaction was, "Gee, if they are that confident, it must be something Dr. Hope is used to doing and I need not worry." After that appointment, throughout the surgery planning and preparation for surgery, I did not once question Dr. Hope's professional skill. I would like to add a special note about Christine. She was the backbone of support throughout the entire process - first appointment - pre-surgery - surgery - post-surgery appointment that I just had - until the next time, when I look forward to seeing her. She is the advocate for all of Dr. Hope's patients and it is, indeed, true that she will do whatever she needs to do to ensure that her patients get the best care possible ... and will fight with whoever stands in the way ... I had a head-on accident and injured my neck. Dr. Hope appraised my MRI and verbally told me in person there was both a pre-existing degenerative problem on one disc and a separate ruptured disc, likely from the accident. I asked "would you testify to this?" and he said yes. However when my lawyers got his report he only listed the pre-existing problem. I called and the office manager was quite rude, I e-mailed his assistant who was in the room when he told me his diagnosis - she referring me back to his office manager who finally said I had to submit an official change request form. I submitted their official form and requested the record state what I was told in person but he REFUSED to change his incomplete report. WHY? Because he wasn't paid enough? Makes no sense but it wasted a lot of my time. This was a year after he performed a microdiscectomy on my lower back so you'd think he would treat a returning patient better. But no. read more

I had surgery with Dr. Hope, and from a medical point of view, I was happy with the surgery and the pre- and post-operation care. My concern is that although I have comprehensive medical insurance (BCBS), Dr. Hope's office billed me for more than $1,000 above and beyond what my insurance covered. I had signed a paper with Dr. Hope's office that I would cover any and all additional charges beyond insurance. In retrospect, this was a mistake, and I wouldn't do it again, because it left me open to having to cover all the additional charges that my insurance company thought were too high. read more

I had a 3 level cervical fusion on December 31, 2012. I was having unbearable neck/shoulder pain with extreme weakness in my right arm. The day after the surgery, the pain was gone! I had pain from the incision, but that is a different pain. I started working to regain the muscle strength in my arm and within 2 months I was back to normal. I forget I even had the surgery now unless I notice the neck scar which is exactly in line with the line on my neck. I can't say enough positive things about Dr. Hope and his staff. read more

I was struck by a cab while in a crosswalk and suffered a neck injury which involved the C5-C6 verterbrae being embedded into my spinal cord. I ended up going to three different neuro surgeons for opinions and all three, who were excellent, strongly recommended a discectomy. I did substantial research and talked extensively to all three and ended up going with Dr. Hope. It was unquestionably one of the best medical decisions I have ever made. Dr. Hope explained every aspect of the surgery thoroughly, and answered all of my questions in detail. I also had the surgery at Reston Hospital, which was another great choice. At Reston Hospital, Dr. Hope was able to bring in his entire team, from anesthesiologist to OR nurse to OR techs and the surgery went like clockwork. (Reston Hospital gets very high marks from me as well, and staying overnight in a private room with excellent nurses allayed any fears I had about hospitals.) I have heard complaints about the bedside manner of some surgeons, and that was absolutely not the case with Dr. Hope. He was the last person I saw before I went under, and the first person I saw when I woke up from anesthesia, and his entire OR team was excellent. Dr. Hope checked on me the next day, and I followed up with his Neuro PA, Alfia, who was also excellent. I am nearly pain free and have significantly more mobility than I had previously. Obviously someone working on your spine is a very big deal, but I would recommend Dr. Hope without hesitation. read more

Dr. Hope performed ACDF (3 discs) surgery on me on Friday the 13th, 2013 for chronic disc disease. First let me tell you that over the years I've been to 4 Dr.'s about my disc problem; 3 ortho's and 1 neuro (Hope). I'd been getting cervical epidurals all year but they weren't lasting and the pain would come back often (the injections alone can run up to $1,800 each!!). I knew I was going to have to make a drastic decision soon. Dr. Hope used my 10 mo. old MRI (he didn't make me go through the expense of a new one) and then gave me CHOICES! This is what most people want to have - choices in their own care - he didn't scare me but told me the truth and then let me decide what to do and the timing as well. Even though I knew 2 people who personally had him as their surgeon (and highly recommended him), I was still very scared of this major surgery. Folks; remember - good surgeons are not supposed to be your best friend with warm, fuzzy approaches. They are supposed to be excellent at what they do. Dr. Hope has a warm but very confident approach to what he does best - and he is one of the best in Fairfax, VA. I spoke with 3 of my other physicians before the surgery and all of them were especially pleased that Dr. Hope was going to perform my surgery - that's a huge testament! The day of the surgery I even asked him if he would be able to make the incision in a specific fold on my neck to minimize scarring and he was - to put it simply - an artist. His NP, Monica, stitched me up so well that as a fair-skinned person who scars badly, I can already see how well this is going to heal. My recovery has been text-book so far with very minimal pain. His office is so friendly and caring and his team of nurses/anesthesiologists at Fair Oaks are top-notch. I was treated by everyone like I was a family member. Dr. Hope even came in to see me on Sat. morning (his day off) just to make sure I was doing OK - that is dedication and caring!! I'm anticipating a full recovery with no further complications but even if there were some, the human body is not perfect and things can go wrong but putting your life in someone's hands that you don't know can be very daunting. In spite of some negative reviews from what seem to be disgruntled former patients angry over the (mis) perception that Dr. Hope is overly associated with insurance companies, Dr. Hope and his entire practice is, by reputation, once of the finest in all of DC Metro if not the entire mid-Atlantic. And of course Dr. Hope, like all other physicians throughout the United States, must rely on insurance companies as his benefactor. That's unfortunately the way our health care system is (fully reliant on insurance companies). If someone has a problem with that, perhaps they should speak to their elected representative. Dr. Hope, like all other physicians, has to make a living as do the insurance companies that administer healthcare for its enrollees. In my years of business relations with medical practitioners and their staff members, Dr. Hope is by far the best physician I've dealt with on a professional basis. Further, he is regarded as the top of his profession as a spine surgeon who has provided the best of care and results to hundreds of patients. I can attest to this personally because I have had dealings with orthopedic and neurosurgeons, as well and physicians in all areas, for more than 17 years. It's unfortunate that seemingly only people who have had what they deem as a negative experience with a doctor, or a perceived negative experience, are the ones who do "write-ups" on such venues as Yelp. If all the people who I have had contact with who have had superb medical experiences and results from Dr. Hope would take the time to make comments on Yelp, most assuredly you would see pages and pages of five star reviews. Once again, Dr. Hope is one of the finest practitioners in this entire region and would be my first choice for back surgery if I were to need such myself. Without hesitation, I would recommend him enthusiastically to anyone. So long as you as a patient are motivated to do your part to recover from whatever ails you, Dr. Hope should be your first choice. read more
