Howard University Department of Dermatology has thee most GHETO, UNPROFESSIONAL front desk staff I have ever experienced. After several attempts to see a dermatologist here, the front desk experience Is horrific. They don't follow up with calls, return calls just HORRIBLE! Not to mention the nasty attitude of the little receptionist. I'll continue to take the drive to Rockville Md. where the service is impeccable from the entire practice. read more

I knew there were going to be issues when I had difficulty even trying to get through to make an appointment as a new patient. The staff does not answer the phone and you have to call multiple times! I had to get a friend, who is a current patient, to call and let them know I had been trying to call to set up an appointment. They finally called me back... the next day after she called them. I finally get an appointment and go on my scheduled date. I had to wait over an hour past my scheduled time to be seen because Dr. Burgess was apparently stuck in traffic, according to her staff. When she finally arrives, she only sees me for 10-15 minutes max! Her go to recommendation right off the bat was the very strong, anti-acne medication that dries you up like a raisin! No "let's check out a few options for you before we put you on this very strong prescription medicine." That really irked me. On top of that, I still had to pay her ridiculous fee of $500, since she doesn't accept insurance outside of Medicare, and then she recommended I try her proprietary formula of face wash and hyperpigmentation pads, which, including the visit cost, end up totaling over $600. Her staff is not very friendly or engaging, especially the front desk people. They seemed very disinterested and bothered if you asked them a question. I will NOT be going back and do not recommend her! read more

This practice makes you wait 6 weeks for an appointment, then calls 2 days before to say the doctor has to reschedule. Oh, and the next available appointment is another 4 to 6 weeks away. For actual medical issues, this smacks of malpractice. This wait and reschedule and wait has happened to me too many times with Dr. Burgess. I like her as a physician, once she finally actually keeps an appointment, but this lack of professionalism is unacceptable. I'm finding a new dermatologist. read more

My sole review is about the lack of communication in regards to this office not accepting insurance, the price and expensive medication. So hopefully this will help someone else know upfront before the visit. Granted, I may have overlooked the fact that this office does NOT accept any insurance, (perhaps in fine print) I was given the impression that they did by taking my insurance information and card, similar to all doctor visits. It wasn't until I was checking out where there is a little sign stating that they do not accept insurance (my first time learning this about the office), I would think this should be at the FRONT desk before someone is seen. After being seen its too late. Secondly, Dr. Burgess wanted me to use a cream that the office would provide, but no one stated that this cream costs and expensive at that. The receptionist proceeded to add the cream to my bill, however, I then asked how much did it cost. Once i learned this one short visit would cost me $400 out of pocket, I immediately asked about the price of the cream which was $105! I declined! Overall, Dr. Burgess was great and seemed very knowledgeable. My issue did not seem too serious so the visit was short. My only distaste was the fact that I found this office to be misleading about not accepting insurance and pushing expensive cream on me on top of a $400 bill! So just know up front and read the fine print, wherever it is located! read more

I was treated by this physician over a period of time and have been VERY DISSATISFIED with the poor quality of care that I have received. Since my termination of the professional relationship with Dr. Cheryl Burgess I have had my situation and condition evaluated by other dermatologists who have confirmed that whatever was injected into my face- and it is still questionable about what that was. This has left a permanent disfigurement on my face. It appears there was a breach between the patient-professional relationship. There are extremely long delays in her reception room and the private room before you see this doctor. The quality of medical records are inaccurate and poor. read more

Booked an initial appointment knowing what I needed, then they required me to book a second appointment before actually prescribing anything. Then after making the prescription lied about what the prescription would be and instead gave me an OTC drug. In total these appointments cost more than $700 and hours of my time for something I could have bought at the local drugstore. read more

This review is for the Annapolis location. Bittersweet. . . Everyone in the back was really nice. The office doesn't process insurance claims (except Medicare) the office is cash and carry. Dr. Burgess is Awesome and seems to know her stuff,very friendly. I'm looking forward to seeing her again. Also Erica is so friendly and helpful. The front desk staff might give the wrong impression for this practice. The front desk staff are just not overly inviting or customer friendly. One of the front desk ladies asked me to have a seat, then left me waiting and forgot I was there. When someone noticed I was just sitting there forever, I was finally checked out once they realized I was the last patient in the place. Bad first experience. read more

I had a fantastic experience with Dr. Burgess this morning. After suffering a bout of major perioral-periorifice dermatitis (read: red, itchy rash all over face and neck), I was referred by Dr. Burgess by the GW Student Health Center. Even though I was not an existing patient, her office gave me an 8:30a time slot for the next morning when I said it was urgent. When I arrived, I got there about 10 minutes early to leave time for paperwork, etc. The office is clean, very modern, excellent reading material. Her receptionist did not bat an eye at my rash when he handed me the new patient forms, and I was seen promptly at 8:30. The PA was friendly, warm, and attentive, and I saw Dr. Burgess after a brief history with the PA. Dr. Burgess was great -- very sweet, reassuring, and direct with her recommendations. They gave me samples of some sensitive-skin sunblock to use, and there is a CVS right across the street where I could get scripts filled. The office only accepts Medicare, but I got a detailed receipt for reimbursement to my private insurance. I will definitely return if I need dermatological care again. read more

Everyone here is awesome! I had a mole that started to really hurt, and I had a relative recently diagnosed with skin cancer. I did the stupid thing and try to diagnose the mole myself. I called the next morning freaked out. They were able to get me an appointment the next morning with one of other ladies. The women sat me down and kindly went through all my concerns and questions. She had the doctor take a look at the mole as well, and removed it right away. I am a big baby when it comes to pain, but they were extraordinarily kind. I looked like I was about to faint, and they went above and beyond to take care of me. When the results came in, the Doc called me personally to let me know everything came back in the clear. Again, patient and answering my questions. When I went to get my stitches out, I was again treated well. Everyone from the front staff to the top Doc was great. I went through a really scary few weeks thousands of miles away from family. These people made me feel safe and cared for. The ONLY downside is that they don't take insurance. It's not that big of a deal. Luckily because of ACA, I am still covered through my parents. I can send a bill that way. I would go back in a heart beat. read more

Sooo hate to have to write this review but it bears sharing. I have been a patient/customer of Dr Burgess' for well over 15 years. Love her, have numerous compliments on my skin and have referred countless people to her practice. Today I had an appt at 1230 and arrived at 1225 to a dark office. It wasn't closed but the receptionist promptly told me that my appt was for 1130 and everyone, including Burgess, was in process of leaving. I informed the receptionist politely but firmly that my appt was definitively at 1230 and she assertively said, "No, you had the time wrong. It's was 1130". Long story short, Friday afternoon, I received a vm message from the office reminding me I had an appt at 1230 on Monday but wanted to know if possible if they could move me up to 1130. I didn't get the message until today, so I never approved moving my appt to 1130 -- which the office must have automatically did. Despite no apology, I explained to the receptionist that I really needed to be seen. I experienced some deep tissue bruising and skin discoloration as a result of a recent surgery and my surgeons really wanted me to be seen by my dermatologist. I explained that I was having some addition medical treatments this Friday that would have me incapacitated for a while; therefore, if I couldn't get back in before then -- I didn't know when I would be able to get back within a reasonable time to have this condition examined. Receptionists response --- UNCONCERNED. I asked if dr was aware of what happened with my appt.and that it was an office mistake not mine and she assured me she was....... this condition is a serious matter for me. If it was just cosmetic, I could have waited and rescheduled --but this potentially had future medical implications related to my serious primary diagnosis and Burgess' office could have cared less. This is the treatment a loyal, 15+ year patient receives. Unbelievable and unacceptable. I will be finding another dermatologist that cares about their patients and whose office understands the meaning of customer service. read more

At first, I reached a very pleasant woman named Marie, and she informed me of some available dates. I told her I would check my calendar and call her back. Over the course of the next couple days, I put TEN calls into the center, at various times between 10AM - 2:30PM, left messages, and never got a call back. Don't know what type of sketch operation this is, taking my business somewhere else. read more

The two times I have gone to this office the receptionists have been very unhelpful and unfriendly. I have also had to wait over 45 minutes to see the doctor. This morning I left my house early (my husband missed a work appt to stay with our toddler) for an 8:45a appt. Though no other patients were there, I still had to wait about an hour to see the doctor for a five minute consultation. And the skin cancer detecting machine (which is what I went there for) wasn't working. So I paid $190 to miss hanging out with my daughter this morning, wait in a doctors office, and then be very late for work. Now I am supposed to go back for a follow up, but am seriously considering changing doctors. read more

Whatever your skin ailment Dr. Burgess has been able to fix it... at least for me and about 4 people I've recommended to her she has been able to offer prescriptions, remedies, advice or whatever to get to the root of the problem and clear it up in a short time... The only drawback is that she's just that good that she doesn't take health insurance so when you go the visit is around the $300-400 range... Typically I haven't had to go back for follow-up... She even has her own products like skin pads that are excellent on oily skin and if you need to hide things the fading cream is a miracle worker... She is highly recommended and she doesn't waste time on your visit and gets straight to the point - well worth the price you pay.... read more

I hate to write a negative review having never even seen the doctor, but this office needs to do more to show they care about their patients and potential patients. I made an appointment for a consultation and I was told over the phone that it wouldn't be with the actual doctor - just an assistant who can address my concerns and give me options. All good. Completely understand that. When I went to the appointment I was surprised to be followed into the room with 2 other young ladies, and I had to ask who they were. I was told they were in training. All good again - I get it, but it was a little uncomfortable sharing my concerns with 3 people, none of which were doctors or nurses. They proceeded to take some photos and I was told Dr. Burgess was out of town, but she would be back that Monday and would review my photos and the lady I was meeting with would put together prices and email me. I tend to be skeptical people will do what they say they are going to do, so I actually asked if I needed to call to remind them and she assured me she would email me personally. Well as I expected, I didn't hear from her, so I waited an extra couple days and called the office. I was told Dr. Burgess came back from her trip but left again on another trip and didn't have time to look at my photos. But I was assured again that someone definitely would contact me when she was back. Well I never heard from anyone of course. I think that's all the sign I need to look elsewhere for another doctor. read more

Besides the wait times - this practice was amazing. I got very nervous about them not taking insurance, since I was worried about raking up a huge bill, but it ended up being a reasonable $270. I felt for the cost that I got a lot of the doctor's time and attention. I think she's one of the few derms in DC that knows what she's doing and is a true expert in skin care/beauty and most importantly hair loss/growth. I recommend her services highly. read more

I had an appointment at the Annapolis office on Friday, February 7th with Dr. Burgess esthetician. I left work early in order to make my 4pm appointment. I arrived at the location at 3:50pm which is located in a strip mall on Jennifer Road. The office was closed. I immediately contacted the Washington, D.C office before 4pm and was bounced around the automated system. I just hung up with the receptionist this morning asking to speak with the office manager. She responded she was busy. I explained to her my disappointement from Friday. She asked me several times what was my name and informed me that they didn't have an updated phone number. She never once asked me for my current information and would not let me speak wiht the office manager. Finally, after sharing my disbelief in the way Dr. Cheryl Burgess conducts her business, she never once apologized or asked if someone could return the call the apologize. I will not make any more appointments with this office. I will share with everyone that I know my experience. read more

Dr. Burgess is simply the best. When I moved to the DC area from the Midwest, my skin flipped out. Ugly hives everywhere. She set me up with some prescription cream that eventually cured it. Later, when I got more hives, she helped me figure out I am allergic to chemical sunscreens. She's so good that I pay full price even though the office stopped taking my insurance. I just will not trust my skin in anyone else's hands. read more

I had such a great experience here I wanted to share. I was extremely itchy and miserable (turns out it's poison ivy) and called in this morning-I got an appointment for an hour later! The office is really beautiful and calming, like a spa, and everyone was so professional. Dr. Burgess is really great and obviously knows her stuff. Just a great experience-if I have any future issues or have a friend who does, I know where I'll be going/who I'll be recommending. They don't take insurance but to me that level of care is worth it. read more

This place was a breath of fresh air, I used a groupon for microdermabrasion, I've never been there and the location ended up being way farther away than I anticipated, so I was 20 mins late, no worries, not the slightest attitude from staff. Debbie was the medical Esthetician that performed my service, very friendly and comforting, she discussed many options to rejuvenate my skin, she did a great job of up selling products, sadly I was on a limited budget that day, but I will return. The only reason I gave 4 stars is because I feel like she could have been a bit more aggressive, but she was definitely thorough with Pre/post facial and cleansing! Treat yourself and go see Debbie, well worth the groupon price. Impressed with the entire office. read more

This is a tricky review to write. Dr Burgess is wonderful, knowledgable, and warm. I bring my daughter to her for acne and my daughter loves her. We have been to her for other issues with my daughter too and every time got great care. The staff are also really pleasant and polite. The downside is communication. It took almost 40 minutes for us to be seen recently After 15 minutes I asked whether there was going to be a long delay. We would have been glad to reschedule. But, no, we were told it wouldn't be long. it was quite long. After the visit (Tues) they were to have called in a prescription. That did not happen by Wed.(This happened last time we were there too, by the way) I emailed to ask them to call in the prescription and let me know when it was done. No response. The next Monday, I called and waited on hold for 16 minutes after which there was lots of back and forth, more waiting on hold, and they hung up on me once (unintentionally I assume). I called back (again) and asked them to confirm with the pharmacy that the prescription was received and to call me back. They managed to call it in to the pharmacy but failed to call me back. So irritating and yet, they are really really nice people. They seem to be hard-working, competent and caring, but know that you may have to follow up (a lot) to get information sent and received. read more

I wish I could rave about my experience with Dr. Burgess like some of the other reviews however my experience wasn't so excellent. First off, she's really expensive and doesn't take insurance, so I was hoping for optimal results since I would have to pay for everything out of pocket. I wanted some small moles removed from my face and although she removed about 5-10 small moles on my face, I ended up paying a whopping $645 for the procedure and consultation. Unfortunately, I realized that after the procedure, maybe 3 months after, that I had a mark on my face that wasn't there before that I realized came from the procedure. That was about six years ago and that mark is still there. It's uncomfortable to know that I paid all that money and instead of getting the results I expected a few moles removed, I have what seems to be a permanent mark on my face. read more

Dr Burgess and her staff are amazing! (I had so tired of seeing dermatologists who pushed botox treatments, dermabrasion, facelifts and/or their own line of expensive products rather than really listening to me and treating my skin issues.) I was so glad to find Dr Burgess! She clearly loves what she does---and truly understands the science and proper care of skin. She listens, explains, and answers questions . She treats patients as total equals ---hey, we all have skin--yet you always feel as if you are in the most professional hands. Her DC office suite is stunningly & creatively designed --- Dr Burgess understand the power of light and color. . I always feel calm the moment I walk in to the waiting room. There are no glaring fluorescent lights here! While she is not cheap ( this is DC,after all) she earns every cent. Her billing practices are straightforward and no-nonsense. Under her care, my improvement is rapid and apparent. I was so surprised by the outstanding help from Catherine when I called the office of Dr. Burgess that I felt compelled to write a Yelp Review. I had called a few offices before finding Dr. Burgess to make sure that my health insurance plan was accepted and that they were taking on new patients. Although Dr. Burgess does not take my health insurance, Catherine was kind enough to give me the name and contact information of two other dermatologists in the area that do accept my insurance plan. Not only did she go out of her way to be helpful, but it was so refreshing to get such a friendly person on the phone. I'm not even a patient and calling their office was much easier and pleasant than calling any of my current doctor's offices. read more

I've been to see Dr. Burgess twice in the last month and both experiences have been very postive. I came to see Dr. Burgess because I was told she is the expert when it comes to filler. I had been to another doctor that had injected too much filler into my tear trough area causing puffiness that would not go away. At the first appointment she dissolved the filler which was the only way to resolve the problem. She injected conservatively and suggested I give it a little time and then come back so see if more of the filler needed to be dissolved. I scheduled a follow-up and ended up having Dr. Burgess redo the filler. She did a fantastic job. I did get slightly bruised and there is a little swelling but nothing like I had with the previous doctor. Again, she injected conservatively and that was really key. She is very skilled and I will definitely go back when I need filler again. Dr. Burgess was very personable and I did not feel rushed. She took time to explain what she was doing. Her assistant Ericka is great too. Dr. Burgess is most definitely a more than capable doctor in my experience. read more
