    Our ceremony :)

We celebrated our wedding here on July 19, 2014 and it was wonderful. We went through their website and emailed their events staff and they responded in a timely manner. They gave us a list of potential days and times to look at the venue and we booked one. We went in and looked at it on a Friday evening. We met Luis (who is really nice and super cool). The building itself is beautiful and has a distinct reverent churchy vibe without being an actual, you know, church. It was a library and we are bibliophiles, so it was perfect for us. We did end up considering some other places, but we had completely fallen in love with the Center so we emailed and booked an appointment with Luis to get our contract in order. We actually booked our date a year in advance and that help us a lot as far as planning the rest of the event (because we were set on the venue). Everything else went according to plan. We booked caterers and bartenders, etc. and got our event insurance (the only real "additional" cost (under $200) and they helped us with finding an agency to get it through). As the day got nearer Brian took over and was great at booking and helping us through a walking through and making sure everything was in order for our big day. We had to add additional time last minute (like, the week before) and Brian handled that like it was no big deal at all. The day of the event the doors opened when they were supposed to and Luis was on hand to help us. He was awesome, and the venue was clean and ready to be set up. Overall the place is beautiful staff was really cool (chill, no pressure, but responsive). Some of the reviews mention communication problems, but that wasn't our experience at all (if anything as we got closer to the date they were a lot better at following up than we were). Awesome space, great people, and can't beat the price. Perfect for us!

(Volunteered 10/05/13 SA @ 9:00am): You had me at ARTS! As a new wrinkle for me, I decided to work as a volunteer at the 15th Annual Eagle Rock Music Festival, produced each year by the Center For The Arts - Eagle Rock. Outside of being the driving force behind this semi-influential music block party, the facility also held intimate concerts, art installations, fitness classes, an annual art auction, and can also be rented out for weddings, conferences, etc. http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=mMC9cRvpWEuomVI3OBMM5w&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw Check out their calendar of events for very affordable entertainment, and remember, all proceeds are reinvested into such community-driven offerings. http://cfaer.org/calendar/ Service - The staff I dealt with were completely friendly, helpful, and professional. Mad props to Henny Alamillo who was the Volunteer Coordinator for the event. Granted, it wasn't the staff whom I imagined were in charge of the various camps, exhibits, workshops, and various other programs. But in some cases, I felt you'd be safe to judge fellow associates to be cut from the same cloth. I definitely needed to make a return visit for another event. Parking - As far as I could tell, they didn't have their own parking lot, so there's non-metered parking on the cross-residential street of Rockland Ave. or metered parking along the main drag of Colorado Blvd. Atmosphere, décor, ambience - Formerly the original Eagle Rock Library, the architecture was of Spanish motif with some amazing saucer-looking lights that hung from the high ceiling. http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=SCLUGHDXE1KCmcJVBOZAug&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw Plenty of natural lighting shown through the many windows that covered this building. http://www.yelp.com/user_local_photos?select=c4mAcOKgWzPUIrMFIbhMng&userid=8jVT2inwc8GIQ6sH2UG9Vw On this particular day, the floorplan was completely opened, and there appeared to be an exhibit closed off from the public that filled the front alcove window. However, quaint was an apt way to describe this place. The walls were snow white, with a kitchen and office area towards the back. A thin staircase led upstairs to what I figured were more offices, and there was a check-in area of sorts at the base of the stairs. No TVs, and all I kept thinking was how this looked like when it was a library!? Attire - Generally speaking, all events in conjunction with this business were pretty casual, so I'd be in a t-shirt, boardshorts, and flip-flops. Overall, from what I could tell the Center For The Arts - Eagle Rock offered a wealth of programs that supported the community not only in the realm of the arts but so much more. As with most community centers, they were a non-profit organization where most of their funding came from donations and the kindness of volunteer hours. I found very good value based on the prices, service, and experience noted above (total experience was around $0.00; no tip required), but if you learned anything about me through my reviews, I'm a big proponent of helping local communities especially when the arts, children, fitness, and history were involved. People needed to take more pride in their surroundings and give back whenever they could. Although I couldn't say for sure if it was accepted for any onsite programs, my credit card of choice was accepted for online donations or membership...AMEX!

Here it is: my exhaustive review of my CFAER wedding. Tl;dr - this place is a gem and perfect, and I feel incredibly lucky to have found a space in LA that was: 1. gorgeous, 2. affordable (by wedding standards), 3. had minimal restrictions. With minimal restrictions come some trade offs. Depending on how you look at it, you have the freedom/burden of picking your own vendors, food, rentals, lighting, dessert... everything. It's a challenge to manage all of these details, even for a former event planner like myself, and there were a few times that I wished I'd picked some "wedding factory" hotel ballroom where I could pick from a checklist of chicken or fish, buffet or plated dinner, chocolate or vanilla, color schemes, etc. Here are some of the things that helped: COORDINATION: You will need to work with a coordinator. In my case, it was an organized family friend who was there to receive deliveries and "direct traffic." Some people have endless amounts of young, strapping friends totally stoked on showing up early to set up (not me). If you don't have that, please find room in your budget to hire a DoC. That's the only thing that ensures that you have a prayer of enjoying your wedding day pre-ceremony. FULL-SERVICE CATERING: I worked with an excellent full-service caterer who handled all the tables, chairs, flatware/silverware, linens, service, food, and setup/teardown. They were DJs catering. They had not worked at CFAER before but they did an expert job. DJs is priced VERY competitively - hire them. LETTING GO: I scrapped stuff that didn't speak to or resonate with us. I didn't see the need for bouquets, outdated rituals, or much decoration at all. This is probably good advice for weddings in general, but specific to CFAER - there are shelves in the walls and you can make yourself crazy filling them all - but why? Brian said "just focus on the top shelf because that's all people see" and we took that to heart. It worked well for us - you can let the room shine on its own without a ton of decoration. OTHER STUFF YOU MIGHT WANNA KNOW: *CFAER was really great to work with. We booked them pretty early (maybe 11 months in advance) and corresponded a few times in the intervening months. They responded to all our questions quickly and directly, for the most part. There may have been a couple times where they missed a question initially but, to be fair, we asked a lot of questions. *You get a 1-hr rehearsal for free, scheduled around whatever else they have going on (ours was the Thursday prior, which is what I wanted). *The one thing you "must" have is event insurance. If you are serving alcohol (which, you'd better be) you need alcohol insurance as well. I believe this ran us about $200 using one of their recommended vendors, Wedsafe. *My wedding was small - around 65 people - and we appeared to have filled the room. I think capacity is around 100 but it would be tight. We didn't want people on the far side of the columns, though it appears that people do that. *There's that huge-ass window - and you should beware of its superpowers. It can either: a. provide beautiful and even light looking like the gates of Heaven itself; or b. blind your guests and photographer with scorching power. For this reason, we chose to cover with a sheer curtain - then the day ended up being overcast and atmospheric June Gloom, so we didn't end up "needing" it. If you have a winter wedding at 5pm, it's probably ok to go uncovered, but 5pm in the summer with the light pouring in for hours? Yeah, cover that up. *There's a "holding room" downstairs, which is not exactly a glamorous bridal suite, but serves as a great place to hang out and drink beforehand. *There are three parking spots out in front, which you can reserve through the city - good for you folks that want a space for your food truck. *PARKING. This was the one area I felt mildly irritated about. When we booked the venue, CFAER had an agreement with the neighboring B of A parking lot that cars could park there on Saturdays after 4. Sometime after we booked, they emailed saying the arrangement had changed and guests could no longer use that lot. It worked out ok for us - everyone got there, I just assume people had to park a little ways away. *They're pet friendly! Our dog walked down the aisle in a tuxedo bow tie. (We're very white.) *You can have sparklers, open flame, confetti, etc! A friend of mine was commiserating that her venue didn't allow open flames, which means no candles - terrible! I shot off a confetti cannon at the end of my wedding. I am not a person that had always dreamed of a wedding, but if there was one hope I did have, it was that I'd always wanted a wedding that felt personal. For all the extra legwork of having to figure out things for ourselves, I was rewarded with a wedding that was incredibly meaningful/personal and really felt like us. You definitely don't get that at every venue.

Beautiful setting for a friend's wedding. It's a former library that looks like a church. Worth stopping in to see.

After losing our previous bunny unexpectedly, which totally wrecked us, we found immense comfort and support through this incredible community of rabbit lovers. Lejla, Jane, and the long-time volunteers are exceptionally knowledgeable about bunny care and wellness, and they truly care about every single animal. Bunnies are not "easy" pets, so having a whole community to lean on and ask questions around the clock makes the world of difference. Because of BWF, I've become a much better caretaker in providing a suitable environment, proper diet, and grooming. Fostering Popcorn and Zoe has been such a joy. It's unfortunate that people tend to overlook REWs (Ruby-Eyed Whites) because of their eyes, but Zoe is brilliant! She's a smart girl who has recently started zooming and binkying the second she hears the fridge open up until you set that nice plate of greens down. While she prefers her enclosure, if you step into her space, she'll happily demand pets and treats. Popcorn is a curious guy who explores the house every day as if it's his first time seeing it yet we can completely trust him not to chew on anything! He earned his name from the hilarious midair body shakes during his binkies, witnessing one will absolutely make your day. He is notorious for his afternoon nap flops as well. Zoe is definitely the dominant one, which means Popcorn grooms her every single day. We can always tell when Zoe tries to return the favor because she's... not great at it. Popcorn ends up looking like he just rolled out of bed! Both of them are incredibly well-behaved, used to being groomed, and will happily sit in your lap for hours during a grooming session. Hopefully Popcorn and Zoe can find their perfect forever home where they will have more space to binky and explore! If you are looking to adopt, foster, or support a rescue that truly knows and cares for rabbits, Bunny World Foundation is an amazing option.

Even a recent Yelp Beach Cleanup event, associated with Heal the Bay, required volunteers to sign up first with LA Works. For MLK's Day, LA Works planned a morning at Rosemont Elementary where hundreds of people, most of them a part of their employer company (ex. Target, Home Depot, JP Morgan, Accenture), showed up to help revitalize the campus. A radio station came prepared with dancing and music to jumpstart the day. Volunteers were assigned letters and numbers, then told to report to their assigned tasks. It was all very organized and efficient. They cleaned the computer labs, classrooms, storage room and rec room. Adults and kids alike transformed drab brown walls into a playground of rainbows and sunshine. Snacks, juice and water were available throughout the event. Following, food trucks showed up, some of which were either prepaid by the organization or declined to charge. You can become a volunteer by signing up for an account - and then going through their available search options for projects you would be interested in. I like looking through their calendar for a big picture of their activities. Some projects, like anything that has to do with animals, are hot and fill up faster than others. Clicking on the individual project listing will provide a detailed description and, more importantly, the geographical location/zip code.
