This little gem was found on Google maps near our AirBnb. It got great reviews so we wanted to get…read moresome food then walk to the park to have a picnic. It is CASH ONLY and the nearest ATM is a 20 minute walk back to town. The cooks and owners speak limited English. The menu is primarily Chinese with a few Malaysian and American Hot Dog style items. But they also offer other fried seafood, chips, and hamburgers. Also cook up large portions for families or groups. It is takeaway only...no seating. And per Google reviews, on busy nights like Friday or Saturday, you should call ahead or be willing to wait. There was a steady stream of customers while we waited only about 15 minutes for our plates. I can't speak for any other option but the fish and chips came highly recommended. The portion was enormous! We ordered 2 but only ate 3/4 of only one order and left the other for our AirBnb host. We had no idea. It was 2 very large filets, 2 potato patties, and 2 or 4 handfuls of fries. So much food for only 12 NZ dollars. The fish is light and flaky and although the breading is big, it doesn't feel heavy. In fact, it was very crispy and light and wasn't in excess. The fries were crispy and salty and way too plentiful. Other reviewers on Google loved the potato thing, but I could have done without. The place is a little dumpy but apparently the locals love them. I hear the Chinese portions are just as big and just as tasty. It's a bit from the main drive in town but well worth it! And very inexpensive...you'll definitely have leftovers!

The lemon salt they sprinkle on the crispy battered fish is Devine. It's just a shame that you gotta pay for vinegar at a fish and chip shop. But I suppose they do give you enough lemon to sour everything. ;-)

I love fish and chips, and since I heard NZ was famous for them, I was eager to try somewhere! I'm…read moresure there must be fish and chips closer to home, but sadly, if there are they aren't on Yelp yet, so I decided to go for a bit of a walk to the Ancient Mariner. I was a bit surprised to discover there was minimal seating indoors, although I'm not really sure why, since I've not dined in at many fish shops. The seating was small shippy-things (I'm a bit of a landlubber, so am not sure of their technical term) around large barrels. They were quite uncomfortable to sit on, but since we didn't want to walk all the way home with cold fish, sit on them we did. My husband and I shared two pieces of snapper and chips, with some malt vinegar. And oh god, it was delicious. The fish was amazing - fleshy and white and great flavour, and the batter was the perfect thickness and seasoned with lemon pepper (I think). Chips were chunky and crunchy on the outside, soft and fluffy on the inside. I'll definitely be back here - even if I have to perch on an uncomfortable piece of ship furniture to do so!

Luckily, most of the stores are undercover so we weren't troubled although anyone buying fresh fruit or veggies today would not need to rinse them as this stall is located on the market's edge. We came specifically for a breakfast catch up and shared a delicious bacon & egg gap, a chai from Cosset and some oh so sugary and delicious donuts from Scratch Bakers. Other treats on offer included bagels from Toasty Bagels paired with salads from a Deli stand, pies at scratch bakers and coffee & smoothies from Sprout, which is the permanent cafe on site. Shopping options included fresh & smoked seafoods, cured meats from Salash Delicatessen and some of the freshest fruits & veggies I've seen in a while. With Miss Maggies dog treats on sale and the lovely La Femme Fleur flower truck on site, the Mt Albert market has everything you need on Saturday morning, except the newspaper. Wish I lived closer!
