This review is for the Dietary Manager named Joanna Sucgang who works at Central Gardens where my father is a live-in resident there. I wanted to write a review to share how pleased and grateful I am for the dietary care he is receiving. My dad is a strict vegetarian with a very particular diet that he has been on his entire life and I was not sure if he would be able to sustain it after being moved into Central Gardens. So I made a special request on his behalf to make sure he got some of the dietary items he could eat and OMG, Johanna was an angel. She is who I spoke to about my dad's dietary needs and it's been almost a year now and she has steadily gone above and beyond to make sure my dad was taken care of. She goes ABOVE AND BEYOND to make his stay as comfortable and healthy as possible. Her attitude is so pleasant and joyful and that makes us feel good under the circumstances of having to be confined to a bed. How patients are treated is so important and we are filled with gratitude about their willingness to accommodate his dietary restrictions. We have many options for his nursing home care but I am keeping him put there because of caregivers like Joanna. I thank God every day for her because it makes all the difference in a patient's life. Overall, I have had pretty good experiences with most of the staff and nurses there and me and my dad are happy with his care. But I wanted to do a special review regarding the dietary person because that is crucial to a satisfactory stay at a nursing home. Unbelievable at this place Central Garden is the worse place ever is 10:37 PM I'm trying to go to sleep but I need some assistance, I called the nurse light around 9:25 and it's been more than 1 hour waiting for someone to come and help me. I can hear people laughing in the hallways walking around passing by my room the lights on and nobody cares to help anybody here I hear other residence yelling for help and nobody comes to see them either!!! if you are not on your CNA list or your RN nurse, no one will come and help you. Is very dirty and infested with cockroaches since I got here on Friday, I never seen anybody sweeping or mopping. All they do is just take the bag out of the garbage can no sweeping no mopping. This place is horrible. It's a real nightmare. I wish I can move out of here ASAP. I will leave some pictures of this place and a video. read more

Nora Im I have had the privilege of working with Nora my social worker at Central Gardens for the past five years, and I can confidently say that she is an exceptional professional. Her work ethic, compassion, and genuine dedication to her patients set a standard that is rare to find. She consistently goes above and beyond her duties. Whether it is advocating for patient needs, supporting families, or checking in on individuals even after they have been discharged to ensure their safety and comfort. Her follow through shows how deeply she cares about the people she serves. She also has a remarkable ability to connect with patients, including those who may be more challenging to reach. Her patience, empathy, and calm presence create an environment where people feel heard, supported, and respected. It truly is a gift, and one that reflects the heart of what every social worker should possess. People don't go to recover here--they go to die here. I was both physically & emotionally abused there. Due to their negligence I almost died there. I came there to recover from 2 subdural hematomas in the brain. At first it was okay, although my room was dirty, small & depressing, and very cold at night. The CNAs were always confused about my medications. I saw the doctor only once. Typical complaints like horrible food, etc but the complaints got worse. They didn't alert me about my doctor appointments, so I missed them. They didn't know who my Medical power of attorney was--they thought it was me! One horrible woman CNA yelled at me every morning 'we ain't got no oatmeal" (they did). Same woman give a gave a freezing cold shower (I hadn't bathed in more than a week) & blamed me for breaking the shower--when everyone knew the shower was already broken. 2 weeks later, they offered me a shower & acted surprised that I wanted a female (I'm a woman) to give me a shower. I finally gave up & let the man give me a shower. I asked the woman her name & she refused to gie it to me. Meanwhile my condition worsened. The Physical therapists told the nurses that I was in bad shape & getting worse, but they did nothing. Luckily my friends noticed I couldn't write text or walk & it was getting worse. They came & we waited 2 hours for transport to take me to the hospital. It never came. So lucky for me they took me. After the CT scan, the surgeon said I was in worse shape that I was than when I first came in. They operated immediately. The Central Gardens NURSES DID NOTHING. If my friends hadn't moved swiftly, there could have been permanent damage. Attorneys I knows are interest in pursuing this as a clear case of negligence. Harny--get out of there. It''s a hell-hole and it needs to be closed down. read more

My grandma entered their snf after covid. We couldnt visit her because of covid resrrictions. She ended up with covid and pneumonia. The clinician didnt give her antibiotics or take her to the hospital. They even withdrew her oxygen and we could see her fingertips had turned black. All the nurses were crying. I kept calling to speak to the clinician as a physician myself and he never returned my phone calls as my grandmas health spiraled over a 2 week period. The event was so traumatic it still gives me nightmares. In fact, I just woke up from one and that is why I am writing this review now. The review is mostly about the physician who killed my grandma. The nurses were caring, so it is hard to lump them in with that person. read more

My husband came here after 2 weeks in hospital. He is gravely ill. this place is dangerously negligent. He has vomited 2x from the food. There was s absolute chaos here- no scheduling, short staff, completely under staffed. The guy sharing my husband's room was walking with his catharta to the bathroom. He is not able to walk on his own, there was a male nurse 4 feet away from him, in the room, talking to a female nurse- they COMPLETELY ignored this poor guy. I stood up to help him! This place is unsafe and should be closed down!!!! surely there are "minimum standards" required for rehabilitation centers? NICEST staff ever! The kindest, most polite and flexible team: Nora, Brandon, Annabelle in leadership (they coordinate with the patient plan administrator--most likely Kaiser--on Tuesday morning team Zoom calls.) Jessica & Gia etc. in nursing. Super sweet daily care team. Website is www.CentralGardensPA.com (not centralgardenSPA) Very clean facility. Shared rooms--ZERO PRIVACY. They really need a dedicated room for sensitive conversations. Lovely back patio area. Warning: due to liability patients are not taken outside if they are unstable. Sunshine and fresh air is essential! Family/friends must be actively involved to catch any oversights that may need correcting as staff fluctuates daily. Our elderly friend stayed here for 6 weeks. PT/OT staff varies. Dietary requirements went uncorrected for 30 days (red meat burgers and sandwiches were served---no one asked why patient wasn't eating), clothing unregistered through the front desk went missing in laundry service--which means clothing is NOT washed separately. Medical charting records and updated contact information should be checked. $12 was charged for the patient to access records. Discharge and health coverage extension depends on these recorded parameters so make sure they are accurate. $500/day for self pay if coverage runs out. (Pacific Heights SNF is $800/day.) Kaiser will push a patient out of a hospital or SNF very quickly so learn HOW TO FILE AN APPEAL. Mobile notary is onsite, but she said it was 'too much work' to update her license. We had to go hunting for one for updated healthcare paperwork. Healthcare for seniors is absolutely horrifying in this country. You have to be either really wealthy, or Medi-Cal poor to survive. Long term care insurance helps--tough battle if you do not have any to offset costs! Kaiser did not cover transport from their Hospital to this SNF (Skilled Nursing Facility) so $86 was paid by the patient. We did complain to the Kaiser care team (RN, MD and Social Worker) so they organized a viable paid transport to the ALF (Assisted Living Facility) post SNF discharge. Bottom line: get to know EVERYONE involved in patient care inside and outside of this facility and make sure everyone is on the same page! It is A LOT of work helping elderly patients in this vulnerable situation. Have at least 2 people involved and use your time wisely. read more

My dear friend was there for over a month. While it's a difficult to reach anyone over the phone; going in person is the key. Jessica -- attentive and caring Nora - responded to e-mails with joint calls to include other caretakers and updates. Ogla -- very supportive and help with contacts to help. I saw a male caregiver who helped my friend with eating, clothing, etc. Anabel - head nurse who clearly helped me understand each time. Also, they keep very detailed records as to exercise, meds and progress. That was very impressive. It's a challenging time to deal with healing, care and patients. My mother stayed at Central Garden for over 2 months. I visited her often (at least 20 times), I've come to know the place quite well. I probably have a better comprehensive understanding of Central Garden than most other visitors. Environment: Good lighting, the opposite of dark and gloomy. Each room has two beds for 2 patients with a TV, desk drawer, and a closet. Patients are free to wander around the hall and recreational area if they get bored. From what I've observed, it's a positive work environment, everyone seem to know their roles and does it as best they could. There are times when I notice some staff who seem tired of their work, the repetitions. After all, a nursing home is one of the environments that could suck the energy out of you. Entertainment: Aside from the TV, there are scheduled events everyday, along with weekly religious sermons. There's a recreationals and exercise area where patient can go to use exercise equipments, watch TV with a group, or play board games. Food: Don't expect home cooked or restaurant level food. However, it's never lacking in variety. The food everyday is different. It's a hit or miss, few times pretty good, most times meh, sometimes kinda bad. My mom's roommate hates the food, she's always asking for something else, and to my surprise the staff always brings what she asks for. Anyway, all the nutritional bases are covered and the food is relatively healthy. I'll attach pictures of some dishes. If you don't like the food they serve, you're free to bring your own food like I do sometimes. CARE: This is the important part! So every patient has a call button they can press to notify staff for assistance. For the first month, I've documented the response times (I'll attach a picture) sometimes quick (1-2 mins), sometimes a bit longer (up to 20 mins), which is understandable because there are times when the facility is short staffed and the CNA is busy with another patient. The help required will fluctuate because some patients can be needy at times. Personally, I've never noticed any mistreatment of my mom or other patients. All concerns I brought up to the staff were addressed promptly. Staff: -Olga: The receptionist, I see her every time I visit. She's very helpful and nice the 2/3 times I asked for her help. -Zoila: She's a small bundle of joy, very affectionate and easy to talk to. My mom seem to like her. -Malasia: The event planner, didn't talk to her much but has quite the presence managing patients in the recreational area. -Armir: The PT, pretty nice guy, Reserved and well mannered. Helped my mom through a couple of PT sessions when I was there. -Peter: Didn't interact much but I remember him working with my mom once and helping me with the workout schedule. Seem like a cool dude. -Sophie: Traveling PT, very positive and friendly. A small slim body but apparently could really eat a lot. -Diana: CNA, I think I see her around the most, thankful for her timely assistances helping my mom. -Jessica: RN, I also see her around a lot. She seems like the calm under pressure type. -Marlo: RN, only met her once but she left an impression, was very helpful. -Cathy: CNA, friendly and had a good exchange with her about her trip and asked too many questions lol -Mama Tran? (I forgot cause I'm dumb) She seem like the Elder of the CNAs, old and wise like she's seen through the meaning of life. She always has a calm positive energy. Thankful to her care for my mom. -Rashna: RN, Noticed I wore the same jacket as her dad bought from Costco. She has such a cool name, love the way she says it with fiery aggression. -Annabelle: Front desk, Every Annabelle I've met is kinda "unique" She has unique hypnotic eyes. -Curtis: PT who worked with my mom the most. Really cool down to earth guy. I enjoy talking with him. Offered some helpful advice and exceptional care for my mom. -Lela: CNA, I like her hair, asked her name one day and she got nervous thinking I'm might make a complaint, huh? lol -Daniel: PT, Gentle giant, easy to talk to, insightful and great with people in general. -Maria: CNA, Very good with patients, has a positive energetic aura. Two patients there told me she's their favorite. -Gia: RN, Also good with patients, seem quiet and gentle but also secretly plotting something. -Marco: CNA, pretty chill respectable guy. Smart and seems like he has big plans for the future. -Alexandra: Speech Therapist, great 1st impression, very articulate and knowledgeable, lights up when talking with friends and colleagues. -Michael: OT or PT, I never talk to him, seen him around often but my brother said a lot of good things about him. -Batia: DOR, Oversees the place yet friendly with everyone. I remember a beautiful sight of her outside with a patient on a wheelchair. Brandon: DOA, I always talk with Brandon regarding any concerns. He is always professional, respectful, and helpful. If you value your family members life, DO NOT take them to this facility. Call lights are a 40-60 min. wait unless your family member works here. Nurses and CNA's often work double shifts. Patients can be heard getting snapped (yelled) at frequently, unless a family member is sitting by their side. Many nurses have an attitude when they have to change a soiled patient. Patients are rushed to use restroom, so they can be charged on a schedule. Often they have to remain in soiled diapers until there's time to squeeze them into the rotation. Patients are told daily by many staff that they don't want to hurt their backs turning the patients. Many staff members don't know proper body mechanics when turning patients. They are short staffed, so if your loved one can't walk to the restroom, it's an ordeal. This is more like a run-down nursing home than a rehabilitation. Many falls occur, but proper protocol isn't followed to assure patients are okay after. Diapers & Chucks are placed at the patients bedside with their room numbers written in sharpie on each item used. Some Nurses try to double diaper a patient to make it faster to change them the next time. Many individuals aren't thoroughly cleaned after being changed. Bed baths are a thing of the past. Patients are often given the wrong medications. Many of the patients can't move around well, if at all, yet their position in bed isn't rotated every 2 hours. It's difficult to get in touch with a doctor if a new condition occurs. IF labs are done, patients are never informed of the results, just given new medications, if at all. There is no follow through for care or concerns. God forbid a patient files a complaint. The complaint is shared with other staff in the hallway and attitudes change and flare (including treatment...bad attitudes, stares of disgust, & rude comments are hurled towards the person who complained. A sick patient with green phlegm wasn't given antibiotics and often sown to have difficulty expelling. Found chocking on phlegm, one staff member told them you're not my patient today, and they kept walking down the hallway. My heart aches for the patients that can't speak, don't have visitors, & we had to leave behind. This review doesn't reflect all staff, but many. One star is the lowest score I can give in order to write a review. read more

My mother-in-law stayed here for a few weeks and was to receive PT five days/wk to get back to walking. A family member was usually there during visiting hours everyday so we were able to observe a lot. Most of the PTs were great except for Nikita. I happened to be there when Nikita came to get my MIL for therapy and I was surprised that Nikita knew nothing about her condition. She didn't bother to check her chart prior to meeting my MIL for the first time. Usually PT lasts 30-45 mins, this particular appointment lasted 15 mins. Nikita tried to get my MIL to stand but her leg muscles were too weak- which is why she was in a SNF to begin with. Nikita gave up after one try. She did some beanbag throwing arm exercises for a few mins. The OT who was present asked her if they should put my MIL on the bike/pedal machine. Another patient was using it but the OT said that he didn't mind waiting for them to finish in order to put my MIL on. Nikita said it looked like my MIL was tired and that she wasn't sitting properly in her wheelchair to be put on the bike. They ended up bringing my MIL back to her bed. If she wasn't sitting properly in her chair, she or the 6'5 male OT could've adjusted her easily. It just gave the impression of laziness and not caring about the patient's progress. The nursing staff deserves 5 stars though, they were attentive, caring and made sure my MIL was well taken care of. They seemed appreciative that my MIL had family available to be there so that she was never alone. I'm sure it made their job a little easier. read more

A couple of weeks ago, we got a call saying we owe them money. Therapy for my mom ended on a Friday 12/20. By that point, she didn't get any equipment yet (walker, wheelchair, etc...) for her at home. They asked me when I wanted to take her home. I didn't feel safe sending my mom home without any equipment. I told them when my next day off was and asked if we could do it then. They said they'll talk to my mom's worker's comp and see if they can get authorization for her to stay those extra days and give me a call if not. I never got a call back about that, nor did they tell me or my mom how much it would cost to stay those extra days. It was also kind of bad timing with the holidays because her equipment didn't get delivered until after Christmas. When my mom got the call a couple of weeks ago, they were hoping they can use her medi-cal to pay for the extra days since worker's comp said no. My mom initially wanted to apply for medi-cal while she was there, but eventually decided not to apply. So she ended up having to pay out of pocket for those extra days after therapy ended. Honestly, my mom and I are not that mad about having to pay. The cost is pretty reasonable and we're lucky to have the funds to pay for it. I wish there was better communication. I would have liked to know how much it cost out of pocket and what my mom's other options were if worker's comp said no. If my mom and I had all the information, we could have planned things out better and maybe save some money. At the facilities I have worked at, the social workers plan things out ahead of time such as ordering equipment before the anticipated discharge date and telling the patient/family when their last day is. Towards the end, therapy kept telling my mom she might be discharged soon because of how she's progressing. It's not like social services were blindsided about her potential discharge. I thought about changing my rating, but I'm not that mad about it. This place got her walking again when she couldn't walk, and it's hard to get mad about that. read more

A month ago, my husband nearly died of kidney failure due to the neglect of nurses and doctors at this facility. His doctor said he was "okay." If I hadn't pushed for him to be taken to the hospital, he would have died. His kidneys were functioning at less than 10%. I'd never be a patient at Central Gardens or subject a loved one to the callous indifference, low quality and unsafe care there. read more

Based on my personal experiences and observations, please note that there are no "perfect" nursing facility and it is fair to have reasonable expectations that make a facility "livable." My mom was here for about 7 weeks after surgery and there were "hiccups" initially but it was resolved after bringing it to the facility attention. I do recommend checking in on your loved ones to ensure that your loved ones are getting the care and attention that they need. If you really love someone, you wouldn't just leave them there and not check on them. Then complain about the lack of care. Bring it to their attention and see how they respond. My concerns were addressed and resolved to my satisfaction. I was able to get to know the staff here and made an effort to remember their names. Based on my personal experiences and observations, I can share that they have a wonderful team here. I was nervous about leaving my mom here but gradually it felt the facility was "livable" to my mom. Thank you Spencer and Vincent for addressing my concerns! My father has been at Central Gardens for about 8 months, and we couldn't be happier with the care he has received. The nurses do a great job at communicating with us, giving us updates and allowing us to FaceTime him daily. The Director of Activity, Nora has been our saving grace. She has been such a huge support for my father, really getting to know him and understanding his temperament and building a strong relationship with us. Her aids Olga and Malasia have also played a huge part in my father's progress, always making sure he is okay, keeping him busy with activities the best of their ability during this difficult time. We FaceTimed him during Christmas time and saw that he was wrapping Christmas presents with the nurses. It made us so happy to see them involving him in every day activities no matter the resources available due to covid. We are so thankful for the care he has received from this facility, and being able to have a safe and loving environment to live in during this time. read more

My Aunt has unfortunately had a few falls lately and has stayed at Central Gardens twice in the past year. I just had to write a review because, especially this second time, the staff has been so helpful. We don't live near our Aunt, and her memory is also becoming an issue; so having excellent caretakers is essential. I want to mention in particular, Nora. She has been so very helpful and has really gone above and beyond in helping us to make sure that our Aunt's best interests are taken care of. This is so hard to do when you don't live nearby to your loved one and they need help, but Nora has put our minds at ease knowing she is in good hands and safe. Nora is amazing at her job, and it's clear that she truly cares about the patients that come through her doors and their families as well. We are very thankful to her and the rest of the kind staff at Central Gardens. read more

My review is about one of their employees, Chad, who I believe is head of nursing. He was wonderful, and did everything he could to make my stay there a pleasant one. My grandmother recently had a short term stay for her stroke. We were nervous about her going to rehab but the admissions team gave us a tour and introduced us to the rehab director Bohkti who reassured us that she would help improve her mobility. My 87 year old mother in law Nelly has been in Central Garden for several years now. I want to say the care that my mother in law gets there is excellent. She is always glad and when we ask her how does she likes it there and the staff, she says she likes it and she is good. My mother in law is an intelligent sharp lady, she is very sharp in the mind even though she is 87, so we trust her opinion. We love the nursing assistants there and staff, they care. I want to lift up particularly a staff named Nora, she is a Cambodian descent, during this pandemic she is very accommodating, she seems to be on top of things, when we do zoom or communicate and serve our mother, Nelly, she goes extra mile, when we speak to her over the phone she seems to care, we love her so much and she has a cheery and positive attitude, and she is dependable. We are glad of her excellent service and love for my mother in law. She is a keeper! read more

My mom had been there for three weeks, during the time, extremely hard to to call in, no one picked up the phone,or after picking up just leaving there for an hour. No one could answer the questions of the condition of the patient. After discharged, my mom physically got much weaker than before, I don't know how they provide the rehab. Hi having my grandma here on May 24th and it's have been 3 whole weeks and 2 days now and this experience isn't the greatest one ever she hated being here cause the nurses take forever to take care of her needs and want and as for me her granddaughter hearing her saying those things and also they don't even take care of her diaper when I heard from my grandma daughter that they left her with her old diaper on and did not even to bother to change it and it take forever for me to get someone on the line to even video chat with my grandma for once and see how she doing cause it seem like they are not doing there job right to help my grandma with healing her hurt back at least check up on her and see how she doing if she need anything not just sit there and do nothing read more

My father lived here for several years. Here's what I discovered. Staff were not following MD orders. He had a special chair that he was supposed to sit on because of his poor health and skin ulcers but I never saw him actually put in that customized chair that was told by MD to use. He ended up getting a bedsore. I liked the nurse Mercedes and the CNA Loren was amazing but there were some staff that simply didn't care. The social worker at this nursing home, Cletus, guilt tripped me about my father repeatedly and said allegations of abuse by my dad was not true and that my dad just needs more attention from family and I was encouraged not to file complaints. Long story short, my dad had huge bruises on his arm found twice within a month's time. I took my dad out to a safer nursing home. This place is huge and has almost 100 patients and the activity room was taken away and filled with physical therapy machines recently by the new management. This is not a nursing "home" but a factory to make money. read more

Central gardens did not care for my grandpa or my family well. Upon our welcoming all seemed great, but with time staff became argumentative, disrespectful and difficult. They threatened my mother and aunt after speaking their native tongue saying they'd kick them out after finally getting an 8 foot door distance meeting due to covid. Nursing care was extremely poor. My grandpa told them he was hungry because they weren't feeding him enough. They asked the nurse to feed him bananas and he ate two of them because he was so hungry. The nurse brought him a drink as well and he drank it like he hadn't had anything all day. They also noticed that his whole mouth was bloody, his dentures were taken away, and nursing staff wouldn't tell them what happened. Obviously this was elder neglect. To make things worse it was incredibly hard to get in touch with staff for updates. The week he passed away no one got back to our daily calls, even after leaving messages. The day before my grandpa passed away at the facility we got news that he wasn't doing so well. My mom called five times that day and no one got back to us. That next morning he passed away. It was a horrific experience. As a nurse, I know it's incredibly cruel to deny family the right to say goodbye or receive updates on the status of their loved one. When I called back later to get his belongings no one would call us back. They got rid of the blanket we got him for Christmas. Overall I'd give this place 0 stars. I understand it's a difficult job, but caring for elders shouldn't be taken lightly. I would never recommend this place for anyone you love regardless of availability. I've learned it's better to say no and do all you can to keep them at home. read more

She has made sure I've been in the loop every step of the way and has gone above and beyond in helping my grandma. These comments refer exclusively to meal service at this facility. During a current stay of twelve days (and ongoing), special accommodations needed to be made to my meals. I requested substitutions for specific items or for entire meals. The Dietary Manager met with me to discuss my needs and alternate arrangements to accommodate me were made. My grandma was recently discharged from Central Gardens. Shoutout to Nora, the Activities Director for making her so comfortable there. We had a great experience with Nora helping us set up calls and visits. We also noticed that she took her time to learn some Chinese to understand her patients more. I am giving this review to Central Gardens Activities Director Nora. She has been so helpful to our family. My grandpa always tells us how much she helps assist him with day to day needs. She's great at what she do and have a lot of compassion and it shows. It's been challenging trying to call but she has made it so easy for us. I was skeptical about rehab at first but I felt they really took the time to understand my loved ones specific needs and were able to accommodate them. The place overall is a dump! You can clearly see that the place hasn't been taken care of and it smells. The place looks like the last time it was painted was in the 60's. The floor tiles are peeling up. The garden doesn't look like it's been worked in, in years. There's nothing modern about the place. No TVs, radios, or phones in any of the patients rooms. The bathrooms are not handicap accessible. It's only saving grace are some of the staff. There are several staff members that truly care about the patients there. They go well beyond their job to do what's right for patients. read more

The facility is relatively small, on one floor, and it makes it easy to get around. You don't feel like you're lost in a large institution. All in all, quite pleased with this organization. Central Gardens staff are friendly, caring and attentive. They always have activities for the residents. They also have great social services. read more

Disappointed. My sister-in-law, father was admitted last week. This week we went to visit him again. The nurse did not even come by to check on him. My sister-in-law spoke to the director & the next nurse came back. She looked pissed & had the nerve to be disrespectful to my sister-in-law. She was extremely rude. If you don't want to work here...leave then. Why are you a nurse in the first place. The man was unable to care for himself. That is why he is here. Have some respect. Be a nurse or get lost. The Central Garden has been updated and has some beautiful trees and shade for the residents. The residents were very happy and clean. And one of the most caring staff. Very kind staff and approach the residents as family. CALNHS.ORG rates the facility as above average and with exceptional staffing ratio! It may not be the most elegant interior, but caring and kindness are the most important issues which are shown at the facility each day. I recommend kindness above all as the number one issue when considering placing a loved one. MKB read more

Central Gardens is a wonderful facility. I can't offer enough thanks or praise for the facility and the caring staff. My loved one (a stroke patient) was in a substandard nursing home up north for a while. It was dirty and depressing. I felt that he was neglected in the critical early months after his stroke and the staff there seemed like they could not care less. He was thankfully moved to Central Gardens, and the staff has worked wonders with him. He's been there eight months and his personality and motor skills are coming back. His attitude is completely changed for the better. The smiling faces of the skilled staff have made all the difference. But there are other things. Central Gardens has resident cats and sometimes dogs come by. They interact with the residents and keep the place cheery and homelike. There are generous human volunteers, too, helping residents pass the time in an active environment. I was deeply comforted in the beginning of my loved one's stay when I noticed that they have live plants ensconced in front of every patient's room. The plants are thriving, giving the clear impression that there is care and attention taking place here. The central gardens of the facility's name are simply lovely. Residents and guests can go sit outside at a covered table and enjoy the working fountain. The cats come out sometimes and keep us company. Central Gardens is also located right off of Geary which makes it easy to get to by bus. read more

A horrible place. A friend of mine with cancer was put there for a week, and died the first nite. They had no pain medication, and not even a commode for the bedside. I asked them, what if she has to go to the toilet. They said, we put her on a shower chair & roll her in. We should have taken her out immediately, because she was dead by morning. read more

I felt compelled to write this review, however I wanted to speak out for those and myself who had similar experiences. I applaud anyone who works in a nursing home because it is a very stressful and challenging job. It is even more difficult to have to deal with patients who no longer can care for themselves, still everyone has a choice when choosing what their career is. Majority of the 'nurses' that works here are reaching retirement. It seems that they are just bumming around to kill time. Each time I come to visit my grandpa, the nurses had frowns on their faces and lack any sort of emotions. I get it, no one should get attached to their patients but please give a bit of empathy or fake it when you see the patients family. My grandpa seemed to have adequate care here but often I question what happens afterwards when I leave. Something seems off and shady about this place because no one contacted me when my grandpa was extremely sick one night. I should have been notified. I speak perfect english and I always show respect for their hard work yet no one acknowledged me! However, I was not notified of a single word until I came for a surprise visit. We live in the 21th century. Everyone and I mean everyone knows how to dial a phone number. I will be seeking higher management. read more
