Takeaways from having to do business with CHD: Hiked up prices over $1,000 for a short 10 minute non-consented tow. Rude no explanation to questions. The rudeness of the employee could have been partially because of the snowstorm. I am an essential worker and had to work right after the snow storm so I get it. But they were rude nonetheless when they towed my car on Monday around 2am they failed to inform state or local police. So I was under the impression that my vehicle legal which is legally owned by my father was stolen. I contacted the towing company on Monday asking if they had my vehicle and if it could be released they said rudely that they were closed and refuse to answer questions I had about the price it they had towed my vehicle they were quick to get off the phone. I called again on Tuesday for updates and to figure out if they were open and to confirm if my vehicle was in the lot and available for pickup since my AirTag were now showing me my vehicle's location. Again I was met with a quick rude response that they going to be closed until Friday. At this point I wrote a review about my interaction with the company. Soon after their manager called me explaining the their situation and seemed to be empathetic to my situation he asked me to delete my review both on google and yelp. I edited my review positively since I thought I would be getting better customer service. They said they would open it was Tuesday morning around 9 when I receive the call from the manager. I was told I could retrieve my wallet. And my car.Everything seemed like they were turning around for me at that time but when I got there they charged me $1150.00 for having towed my vehicle 10 to 11 minutes away mind you they weren't open for two day from Monday when they towed my car around 2 am to Tuesday when I received a call that they would open around 9am Yet they've charged me $200 storage fee $100 per day. The most offensive problem came once I payed the money and I mistakenly viewed their liability waiver clause as a forced no contest compliance clause. I told them verbatim " I don't think I could sign it" I put the paper down and was thinking it over after a while I ask if I would see the invoice again the employee said no. Which made me think the clause in the invoice wasn't a liability waiver clause. I asked if I could take a photo of the clause he refused. I asked if he could hold it on the window and I'll simply reread it he refused. I then asked him if he could tell me what the clause was again he refused. Mind you all that time I had already paid . Then I received a call from the manager essentially calling me a thief, insinuating that I wanted to steal money from their company. He claimed he was being nice to me and opened the office today because of me. I appreciated being able to get my car but then he told be that I couldn't get the itemized receipt and I couldn't get my car unless I payed $1150 cash and not electronically. I went to an ATM and withdrew the money called a lawyer friend to come and check if the clause was indeed a liability waiver and not something else. It wasn't something else so that was good. This whole ordeal took about 5 hours. It could have been solved in 30 minutes with better customer service. Through the whole ordeal I was going to rate them a neutral 3 star but insinuating that I was a thief was rude and over the top. All though they've denied having taken me of a common thief in front of a bigger audience the fact that I was forced to pay through cash or money order is proof enough when others payed through Zelle Cash App or other electronic means. read more

You should be allowed to give this place negative stars. My car was "towed" directly across the street from the tow yard, and the catch is my car was driven by the tow man yet I still have to get charged a $315 tow fee because it's "in their contract". Mind you it's $4 a gallon right now if anything I should get about ¢0.30 taken off of my bill. You should literally pick your car up with your bare hands and put it in your back pocket before EVER thinking about this place. They work with state and local police which is actually shocking do to the fact that the cost was several thousand for a 10 minute tow and 4/5 days of storage. Also, when you arrive at the yard, you're talking to them through a fully tinted window with a speaker, passing paperwork through a slot, ridiculous. Run from this business! read more

THIS COMPANY IS CRIMINAL! They are highway robbers! I was flat-towing a truck I won at auction from the University of Maryland, but the brakes of my flat-towing rig failed, and I jack-knifed on the 495 Beltway; the truck I was driving was flipped on its side and I slid about 300 feet into the middle of the highway; my apologies to all who had to wait. A MDOT wrecker righted my flipped truck and pulled them both to the shoulder and to safety. While I was still in shock and collecting my belongings from the shoulder, these tow trucks from Central Heavy Duty Towing arrived, and said they were going to take the trucks to a safe place; I thought they meant a repair place. What they meant was they were taking them to an impound lot. They refused to give me a ride. The police officer who was there said they had to give me a ride, but they refused to take me to wherever they were taking my trucks. I am not from Maryland, and have no one to give me a ride; I asked them if they could at least drop me off at a rental car place, which they agreed to do, probably because they wanted to have time to go through my trucks and take anything of value that wasn't lost or broken on the highway, and likely, to siphon out my gasoline. The rental car company did not have any cars available, and I did not have an appointment, obviously. It took three hours before they were able to find another car for me and take me to that location. By the time I got to Central Heavy Duty Towing, they would not allow me to retrieve my personal property from the vehicles as required by Maryland Law. They insisted I pay them for the two pickups they towed, but they wanted more money for the one truck (the lower mileage one that didn't roll on it's side) than the other. They wanted $1350 for both truck, PLUS $100 daily storage for both trucks, even though they'd had them for less than four hours, and they would not give me a breakdown of the cost or any written documentation. Maryland law says they're only allowed to charge $113 for a vehicle with a Gross Vehicle Weight Rating of under 10,001 lbs, and these were an F-150 and an F-350, so both of them together wouldn't weigh that much. Plus, it was 15 minutes before they closed the yard, so if I paid them at least $600, I would have only had perhaps 20-30 minutes to retrieve anything they had not already stolen out of the beds and cabs, which had broken windows from the wreck. They would not let me inspect the vehicles without payment. I called the next day after my state of shock had reduced, and the person who answered (who sounded like he was drunk at 8am) refused to negotiate on the price, refused to tell me his name, the name of his manager, the name of the owner, to give me their number or anything. I kept my cool and did not berate or insult him, but he hung up on me several times; he mocked me and said "You can't drive! You can't drive!" in his drunken, slurred way, and hung up on me again. It was only by calling back that he finally gave me a fake name and told me to call back after noon which was useless as i would be halfway to Georgia by then. I later called the police and told them that they refused to allow me to retrieve my personal effects from the vehicles; after I spoke to at least three separate officers, I finally spoke to a sergeant who told me that they are not, in fact, allowed to deny you access to your personal effects if you are the owner on the title. This did me little good as I was already back in Georgia, and now I have to drive back to Maryland to get the police to escort me to retrieve my property. My car was in need of a simple tow. It's a 2024 Cadillac Escalade. Brand new with 10,000 miles. I was a damsel in distress . I thought I was doing business with an honest company. I had my truck towed Monday , September 22, 2024 at approximately 4am. Their business card stated they close at 12noon on the weekends. When I called them at 10:30 am same day to let them know I was on my way there and to get the cost the guy said they closed at 11am. This company dabbles in illegal business practices . They refuse to release my car that same day and demanded that I come the following day to accrue more money from me . When I arrived my truck looked like it had been in a car crash . They went through the glove box and other compartments, they deliberately opened the sun roof and left it open and allowed water inside destroying the leather seats . I have no idea why they were so rude and nasty . Perhaps because I'm a black woman driving a 100k dollar truck . The owner refused to give me his name or insurance information. We broke down late at night while towing a trailer. We called our insurance, and they had no luck finding someone to help us. Our situation was complicated by the fact we had a trailer, which we didn't want left on the side of the road. So, after several hours calling various tow services that couldn't help us, we finally called the Highway Patrol. The officer was super helpful and gave us the number for Central Towing. Steve H. showed up with his rollback, and within a few minutes we were on our way to a hotel. Steve then took the Excursion to the Ford dealer early the next morning. When my car had a major failure, I called Central Heavy Duty to have it towed to a shop. A driver was dispatched and arrived actually earlier than I expected. He loaded my car, taking special effort to make sure that it was not damaged by the rear bumper dragging. The car was delivered to the shop quickly and professionally, and the bill was much less than I expected. Having to have a car towed is never a pleasant thing. The entire staff at Central Heavy Duty made the experience much better that it could have been. I highly recommend them. read more

I called and asked about a scheduled tow and I asked a simple question about how I could schedule it. To my fellow BUS Companies and car owners. I do not recommend this company they are heartless and over price. On Friday January 22nd 2016 my Brother's Car broke down on 50 East before the snow hit. Unfortunately the snow did hit this night but what is really alarming with this company. My brother went to pick up his car and was told he need to pay $400 plus to get his car or if he can't afford it bring back the title and $175 and they will call it even. I know this company need to make money and have overhead, you would think that they would have at lease gave him a brake on price but instead they wanted him to give them the car. What kind of company will hit you when you are down. I spoke with a guy who said he was the Owner of central. I asked him if he can work with him on price and of course got know where. He even asked if I work with groups (I am a Travel agent) on price and when I told yes I did and there are other companies that also work with groups on price if it was in reason. That's when he told me to call state troops why? I don't know. I know if I ever had a bus or a vehicle go down in this area I would not be using them.
