I just wanted to communicate that my experiences within the past year have exceeded my expectations because of Miss Alex Rodriguez. I have been homeless since last March due to a fire within my apartment complex and have been living in a shelter since the incident. Moreover, I've suffered from a chronic back injury due to an attack. Throughout this chapter of my life, it has been a very positive and productive experience having her assist me with such efficiency, professionalism, and kindness. This location has been a tremendous and uplifting experience, due to the overwhelming care and productive manner in which things are handled. I highly recommend visiting this location. =)

At the time it contained 6,000 books. Architect Frederick M Ashley designed the original Classical Revival style building. In 1960 a new, bigger ultra-modern building replaced it and featured rooftop parking. Eventually the weight of the cars caused structural damage and in 2003 a new building was erected featuring a rustic Craftsman aesthetics fused with traditional building techniques. Even though it is a new build it does emulate the historic features of the neighborhood. The cobblestone exterior is reminiscent of the Abbey San Encino, which is Jackson Browne's childhood home that was designed built by his grandfather Clyde Brown. The Abbey San Encino is just down the street from the Library. My grammar school was nearby and we would often take field trips to this library. It was also a few blocks from my childhood home so I would walk there on the weekends and spend hours reading. Reading is something that I enjoy but don't have the time for anymore. The only time I get to read a book is when I'm on a plane. I'll typically purchase something from Amazon to bring with me but don't know what to do with the book when I'm done. Tossing it seems wasteful so I decided to come here and get a new library card. Now I can check out books for my travels and return them when I'm done. I was surprised by how much this library has changed. In addition to books and magazines they also have CDs & DVDs as well as weekly community events. They are even open for a few hours on Sunday. *Parking lot in the back & street parking.

He is a puppy who just got his kennel shots about 2 weeks ago and had his neuter apt set for next week. They told us we could get him out unless they neuter him, even though we had our vet talk to their vet services, to ensure them we had a care plan and apt ready. We just wanted him back. It was $125 for the shelter to neuter him and release him back to us, his parents, and we agreed. We left and they told us to be back tomorrow at 2 pm to pick him up. We showed back up today and they told us there was nothing in Blu's notes about the neuter plan and release, and nobody from the day before was there. We spent two hours at the shelter planning the entire neuter and pickup procedure, even though we really did not want to be without our boy for one more night. I even spoke to the supervisor again to confirm after my husband went to go see our boy in his cage. The next day when we went to the shelter, as informed at 2 pm, they told us they had not neutered him and it was not in the system notes. That is not our fault. That is their fault and their negliance. They told us yesterday we could also pay $300 to get him out same day if we got a breeders certificate. We agreed he'd stay over night and do the neuter as it was cheaper and we just were married on the 3rd and a lot of our funds went towards our wedding. We showed up today, as told to do so, and they told us he has not been neutered and he'd need to be picked up again the next day, meaning another whole night without him, even though it was their incompetence on not completing our neuter plan, which we spent two hours discussing with them the day prior. This was all because they said they failed to add it to his notes. Too bad they aren't even open on Monday's. (Yea, get a loud of that) The staff had no idea what they were doing or talking about, and we were past from pillar to post with each staff member giving us a different story. We ended up paying $450 to get him out today as we did not want him there at that awful facility one more night. He was outside, laying in his own pee, it was raining, freezing, he had no blanket, jacket, not even a cubby hole for shelter. Which my husband pointed out and their response was "oh we thought he had one", but still not action was taken, no blankets, no shelter, nothing as we returned the next day. I am attaching photos of him in his kennel, and side by side of him home and in the shelter. We showed the photo of our abused puppy to the customers waiting in the reception area, waiting to adopt, and about 4 of the waiting customers walked out in disgust with us. We are working on filing a report with the county. I'm hoping as a community we can work together and make sure our shelters are geared towards saving dogs lives, and giving them good homes, not for money scams, and not for money making schemes, and not animal cruelty. For anyone who has lost their beloved doggy friend, or for anyone who loves their doggy friend as much as we do, you can understand how traumatic this experience was, and sadly this sorry excuse for a shelter made our traumatic experience even more traumatic. We are so happy to have him home and I would love to help out with anyone else who is in need of finding their baby. I am now very fond of these groups and I pledge to be an active member and helpful servant, as I am so happy to have my baby back home. Xo all. If you have a inmate loved one it would be a good idea to send them store on Thursday so they would have a bite to eat. The hole is not a fun place!

The yard could use some maintenance, trimming bushes, pruning things, etc. BUT, I know that the parks dept has like ZERO dollars budgeted for them. The city just screws them over constantly, and by default, really screws over the citizens who should be able to enjoy these places. Anyway, the docent was a lovely young woman. She had been there all morning actually cleaning the inside of this magnificent old house. It really is a beautiful sight to see. The craftsmanship is just spectacular. The docent was so nice and answered all our questions and told us interesting facts and stories about the Lummis family, etc. It was a really lovely brief outing and I highly recommend it.

Now the area has nice restaurants, trendy shops, and hip bars. Back in the day there was only one bar on Figueroa. Now there are 8 that I can think of at the top of my head. There was a time when no one had ever heard of HLP. Now when I mention it they say, "I know that place. Such & such is there!" Located 10 miles from Downtown LA and adjacent to South Pasadena, HLP was one of the first subdivisions of Los Angeles. The neighborhood is 3.42 sq miles and Paleo-Indians were the first inhabitants. In 1895 it was annexed to Los Angeles and become home to aspiring artists in the early 20th century. Lovely Victorian and Craftsman homes were everywhere. Developers started tearing them down until the city stepped in and declared the neighborhood historic. (Some of these homes are preserved at Heritage Square Museum.) Now, when a business is sold the original sign must remain, which is why you'll see the El Arco Iris sign at Barcade's location. The few Victorian homes that are remaining and historic buildings have become Historic Cultural Monuments and can no longer be torn down and house remodels must follow strict design plans. Notable people have called HLP home: Maggie Baird, Jackie Beat, Beck, Jackson Browne, Billie Eilish, Finneas O'Connell, Zach de la Rocha, & Diane Keaton. A number of famous movies have been shot here: Reservoir Dogs, Cyrus, Gangster Squad, Yes Man - to name a few. It is also home to Chicken Boy. Believe it or not, he has his own National Day, September 1st. Anyway, HLP is my hometown. I'm grateful it's safe to walk around the neighborhood now. I'm grateful there are a number of cool shops, restaurants, & bars that I can go to. I'm very grateful my grandfather left me his home, which he bought in the '70s, because there is no way I could afford to buy a house in this neighborhood now.
