I had the pleasure of working with Bob Nicholson and Nicholson Builders on my Novato bathroom…read moreremodeling project a few years ago, and the experience exceeded my every expectation. Bob commenced the project exactly on schedule and completed the remodel within the three-week timeframe he originally quoted, all while maintaining exceptional attention to detail, craftsmanship, quality, and safety. From the outset, Bob provided a clear and fair estimate for the scope of work and completed the project fully on budget. As someone who values the highest standards of craftsmanship and construction integrity, I was extremely impressed by both Bob and his crew. The finished bathroom turned out absolutely designer-gorgeous and remains one of the most admired spaces in the home. Equally important, Bob was exceptionally professional and accommodating throughout the process, particularly when unforeseen conditions arose and when I requested numerous change orders and upgrades. He approached every challenge with practicality, creativity, and a solutions-oriented attitude. Because of that outstanding experience, I again turned to Bob and Nicholson Builders for a major remodel of my Belvedere home. This extensive project included updating the electrical, plumbing, and heating systems, adding air conditioning, strengthening the roof support structure, installing new Low-E windows, adding an additional bathroom, and thoughtfully modernizing the overall 1952-era home. Once again, Bob brought outstanding ideas, design improvements, and construction expertise that transformed the property into a true dream home. His ability to combine structural knowledge, aesthetic judgment, and hands-on craftsmanship is rare. I recommend Bob Nicholson and Nicholson Builders highly and without reservation. Bob is honest, dependable, talented, safety-conscious, highly skilled and deeply committed to delivering exceptional work.

Everything turned out great and they even spent extra time on the panels to get them just how we wanted even though it took them longer to do. Impressive work and wonderful collaboration!…read more Make It Right Carpentry helped us replace our 30-year-old, 30 sq ft rotting wood landing with a 75 sq ft steel-frame deck of our own design. From initial consultation to final completion, we were impressed with how co-owners Wilber Sr & Jr worked with us to understand our options and to resolve challenges as they emerged (as they always do!). We were wowed when the crew took down our old landing in 25 minutes and planted solid footings for the new one in a matter of hours! We appreciated both Wilbers making sure we got the ideal railing for enjoying the view of our backyard. Wilber Sr is a true craftsman and our new Fortress steel frame deck with Cypress Timbertech (boards) exceeds all our expectations. It's beautiful! We now have a comfortable and inviting outdoor space to eat, relax, read, nap, hang out with friends and literally smell the roses. Thank you, Wilber Sr, Jr, and crew, for adding this wonderful outdoor room to our home! We enthusiastically recommend Make It Right Carpentry!

Larry just finished my renovations and did an amazing job. All I ever hear about is the horror…read morestories of working with contractors - over budget, over time, rip you off, mess up your house. Nothing of that happened whatsoever with Larry. He created a bedroom, bathroom, laundry, storage and corridor for me so a pretty decent size job. He's a general contractor but one that works too, in fact does all the work except for the specialist stuff like plumbing, electrical, tiling. For all that stuff he has a fantastic crew that he brings in. I didn't have a problem with any of them at all, and importantly they all did first class work. Not only am I super happy with the end result, but it's really the little things that made a big difference like cleaning up the site at the end of each day which minimized the amount of dust settling in the house, arriving on time and on the days he said he would, when I wasn't happy with some part of the job (which wasn't very often at all) he would fix it straight away and on top of all that, was just so polite and considerate to deal with. I can't recommend him highly enough. It was a pleasure working with him. In fact, this is the third time he's worked on a project for me so that says something about his quality and work ethic.

Within a few hours of contacting him, Larry was at our door to appraise the job and give us a rough estimate. Larry always showed up when he said he would, and was always within the timeline of when he said a phase of the work would be completed. Our job was a kitchen and bath renovation. Larry is a perfectionist in how he expects his work to look. Larry took care of all the details, for example: he applied for building permits, and made sure all work was done within city "codes". Each phase of his work easily passed inspection. He had an excellent knowledge of which materials to use and we were always pleased with the finished product. Overall if you are looking for a good and reliable general contractor, Larry is your man. He is one honest and hardworking guy. We have and will continue to recommend him to any friend or family member who is looking to have any contracting work done.

I saw the response from Homeguard in Novato, CA, and one thing I am not nor ever will be is…read more"confused". 1. I have never spoken to or dealt with the woman who responded on their behalf. She is only speaking with the assumption of what she heard from her co-workers. She is missing context. 2. As a CUSTOMER, I shouldn't have to ask for something to be resolved four and five times to no avail. The fact that my concerns passed through at least 3 - 4 levels of management and THEN and ONLY THEN was I offered the chance to have them come back out again and resolve the issue speaks volumes to how this company conducts business. Even the QC Inspector that returned said, "UGHH! Why did they do it THAT way?!", when I showed him pics of the repaired work. I'd be a fool to let them get back on my roof a third time and leave without fixing the issues. 3. If you are a potential customer, please pay attention to the majority of the other positive Yelp reviews. They have absolutely nothing to do with actual repair work; but instead heavily deal with realtors or homesellers participating in the initial inspections to sell a home. Inspection and repair are two separate aspects in their operation. 4. If a business you pay money to has to escalate any concerns outside the parameter of "conducting good customer service" to multiple people at multiple times during a project, then the structure of that business is being mishandled and they are wasting time. Homeguard did not meet our needs and did not seek to resolve anything in a professional or timely manner. The very first person should have handled this and moved on. 5. I immediately got second opinions via online pictures of the work they performed and other roofers were actually going to charge me to repair the repairs. Imagine that! 6. I will continue to periodically give bad reviews of this company, through word of mouth, at conferences, in school, online, in forums, and anywhere else this topic comes up for me. I haven't written a bad review of any other company in over a decade.

He overheard me sharing my project, and introduced himself. From there, he had a simple and straight-forward bid process, showed up to meetings on time prepared, and is a very good communicator. He's friendly, fun to work with, and no-nonsense. More than anything, he cares to get everything right and safe. Through our months of work together he would listen to my ideas, always working with me to make my dream home. All of my questions were treated with respect, and nothing was left undone. His team was creative and positive as they navigated any unforeseen hiccups. Most of all, every member of the team showed up with an open mind and integrity in their work. In working with a contractor, one has to be adaptable to their schedules. From the top-down, these are blue-collar guys, giving 100% everyday physically. As owners, it is our job to treat them as the peers they are: they should be allowed to take family vacations, pivot to other clients while subcontracting takes place, and they can get sick just like anyone. Marin is a very wealthy area, and I did not take for granted that these gentlemen would get up at the crack of dawn to be cognizant of commute traffic, to be most efficient with their time on the job. Similar to other counties, the permit process stinks. But the permit process should be no reflection of the contractors. Both contractor and owner have to be highly proactive in the permit process, given the broken system we are forced to use. I have already referred Brownstein Construction to family and neighbors. And I will certainly use them for future projects.

Unfortunately I would not recommend Brownstein Construction nor would I choose to work with them again. We had to wait 2 months for the County of Marin to issue the permit. The project started in July. We had a deadline for the project of October 15. Then we moved the deadline to October 30 then to November 1 then to November 15th. Despite the apartment not being ready I had to move in about November 20th. The guys had made a big show of coming down and working for a couple of days before i moved in but to my surprise they left without installing the shelves in any of the largest cabinets, not the kitchen or the linen cabinets. I wrote Clark and said the rolling retractable shelves aren't installed and he wrote me back saying watch a You Tube video and do it yourself. I lived here in the apartment with all the boxes containing kitchen items piled in my living room for well over a month. Also I couldn't put anything away into the linen closet. They did not come back to work for a long time after that. They did not come back to work for a long time after that. Then just 1 man would show up to work for some hours and then week or 2 later some other guy would come and work a little. There were meetings Clark scheduled with me for which he did not show up. One time I waited for 45 minutes before texting him and about 45 minutes later he called to say he is not coming to the meeting he is doing something else. I was ghosted by Clark more than once. Luckily I came to the apartment the day they were laying the floors and they were laying the floor crosswise the way you walk in the apartment. When we talked about the job Clark told what they could and would do and then did not do it. They said we can put that cable box in the closet behind the tv and no one will ever see it and then did not do that. Oh we will have a cleaning person come and clean it up before you move in and then took that back.. From the beginning of talking about the project i said i want cedar shelves in the linen closet and into the project he said no. I wanted a ceiling fan and had bought it and he said no after saying yes. As Christmas approached I said whatever is left to do please do it before i go out of town on December 18 and as the day approached Clark said they, or 1 of them, could only come on December 18 so I changed my plans for sake of getting the project done. Still it was i think January the 23 when I was finally able to shut the door behind Clark. That day he kept saying "It's always a rough road. It's always a rough road." and made a big deal about shaking hands. The work is ok. There was nothing complicated. It was completely straight forward. The tile in the primary bathroom is a little uneven and around the shower they did the seams with some silver joiner. It looks cheap and I would not have chosen that look and have never seen that silver capping used anywhere before. The grout on either edge of the silver capping is at uneven depths and needs to be cleaned all the time or it looks bad.
