Lately one of my favorite dishes has been the shredded beef, and for sides gallo pinto, sweet plantains, and fried cheese. They also have a variety of drinks, my favorite being cacao. Centroamericana has been there decades, but it's easy to forget because it's down on Hessmer off the beaten track, unless you're going to Maurice Bakery. I had the shrimp with some kind of sauce that was delicious, with beans and rice and sweet plaintains. I would get it again tomorrow. I also had a chicken taquito from someone else's plate that was just right, crunchy and flavorful. Everything was served fresh and hot. I should go back and take photos. read more

It is definitely authentic made to order Latin food. A family owned hole in the wall place and every customer was Latino. Enormous glasses of fresh tea! They brought a bowl of pickled jalapeno veggies rather than chips and salsa. We had the fried chicken tacos (taquitos), fried cheese plate & papusas. Each plate comes with side of a coleslaw type salad. I'm realising that authentic Latin food has very basic seasoning, so I ALWAYS need to add hot sauce or fresh jalapenos. My Louisiana palate demands it. I was excited to have papusas again. These were good....not great. The fried plantains were very good tho. Everything else was just ok. read more

I've been to this business multiple times and enjoyed the pupusas, the rice and beans, the plantains, the shrimp in jalapeño cream sauce, the chorizo con huevo, the fried pork, and the drinks. One of my favorite restaurants! I have been going there for years! It's small and cozy and the food never disappoints!

The food was hit or miss. The carne asada plate was delicious but the conch soup was nasty. Their juices are excessively sweet. I did not like the ambiance at all. The owner was sitting at the bar talking loudly about sports with a guy seating 3 tables away. Then another guy came in and he was on the phone cursing very loudly. It made me feel unsafe and ruined my meal. I will not go back. read more

The food here is pretty good but it really leaves a sour taste and ruins the experience when you go back within 20 minutes to get an umbrella you left And it's not there. It isn't even a matter of not getting the umbrella back but the way the owner spoke to me about it. He was very harsh in his tone and acted like I was complaining. He's not pleasant to deal with at all. I'm excited been going here for a good number of years and fortunately I've never had to speak to him. Cost him 2 stars. read more

My family is originally from Panama and whenever we want to eat Latin food that feels like homecooked we come here! One of my #1 reasons is to drink agua fe guanabana which you can barely even get it much in Panama now a days. Its one of those childhood 'chichas' that never gets old. The food is also really good- the pupusas, el plato centroamericano que trae de todo, las chuletas, los maduros etc. You can't go wrong!! Service is def not 5 stars, maybe 3.5? but I've learned to be patient in life and go with the flow, so when you come eat here just be patient and try not to be starving. I returned this morning and got a plateful of fatty garbage This illustrates a problem I've found with the type of restaurant that looks like a rat trap Sometimes you may get something really good but if you keep coming you are sure to get something really bad. I had the eggs and chorizo and it was delicious. Ordered the fried plantains as well, and I would definitely recommend.

Our first time here--we were driving past and stopped on a whim. We are so happy we did! We both ordered the combination plate and it is incredible. So many different foods on one plate, and every bite revealed some other treasure below. Limited on time so this review has to be short, but suffice to say, this place is fantastic. I never give out 5 stars but this place comes pretty close. It's a random tucked away restaurant with many random things decorated on the walls (from Christmas reindeers to Saints memorabilia to Posters of Shakira and tropical fishes) but don't you usually find the most good/authentic food in these eccentric hole in the wall places. I always get carne asada but not saying the other plates aren't up to par and the service here is always personable and nice. I haven't been here during dinner but definitely a great lunch spot. read more

This is another spot that you may never know about unless you are looking specifically for it. It's tucked away in a little spot in a less-traveled part of Fat City. Centro is a more low-ball restaurant/bar, but PLEASE do not allow the appearance to put you off too much. There is an obvious central American predilection here, but the staff show hospitality and treat you well no matter who you are. Centro has a relatively small menu, but it's pure with a more authentic Nicaraguan feel. Some version of a "sampler" is offered as an entree (don't remember the very long name of the dish - sorry!), which is a great big plate of almost everything. Honestly, Centro is recommended more for lunch, as there isn't much going on in this part of town during dinner hours, and it can be a little uncomfortable. Little hole in the wall joint with a variety of central american fare. You must try the carrot-orange drink, it is hands down the best i have had. I have eaten central american food in Miami and the juice doesn't taste as fresh as this one. It had pulp in it and tasted freshly squeezed. I ordered the appetizer dish of beans, tortilllas and ensalada, which filled me up. read more

We've come to have dinner here before and the food & service are always great....BUT, tonight my husband was wearing his black fedora. As soon as the manager saw him he got motioned to the hostess to ask my husband to please remove the hat. We thought nothing of it since we're sure it's just policy since this is a nicer restaurant. A while later a black gentleman walked in with a hat on. He was asked to remove his hat, but apparently you can refuse to take your hat off in this establishment. What's the point of having a policy if you're not going to enforce it. Doug the manager just didn't want to fuss with the black gentleman so he allowed him to keep his head on. read more

My favorite Central American food yet! The whole talapia is unbelievable. Get the sauce on the side to enjoy it crispy. Delicious steak dishes and grilled pork too. Stay away from this place! Im central American and THIS FOOD and restaurant is an unworthy place to go. The restaurant gave me a bad impression, after using the restroom I really wanted to get the hell out of there. My friends and I weren't really hungry, therefore I just asked for one plate of food. The owner was sitting right by the bar really near us, and when he realized we just ordered one entree he said; "If it was me I wold be really ashamed of JUST ordering one plate". After my flavorless and uncomfortable meal I paid the check and left more than the 15% Tip, and asked to talk to him. He said he wasn't even talking to us, but then said he perhaps wanted us to hear him. I was calm, trying to explain it was an unnecessary comment. He never apologized, he was stubborn, and very disrespectful. His last words were; "F.... U".... Enough said.... no one should be treated like this, specially by the OWNER of the restaurant.
