Based on those recommendations, I got six estimates ranging from $1,600 to $2,100 for licensed and insured companies, and from $400 to $2,500 for unlicensed companies. It was suggested that I ask each company if their crews are employees or day laborers. I asked them how they would dispose of the tree trimmings. I selected Pinnacle, a local company owned by Javier, who lives in Saugus (but has a Valley phone number: 818-624-5939). Javier was at the job for the entire time that his one-man crew, George, was up in my trees. Javier and George worked together and did a great job trimming two bottlebrush and five Podocarpus. They brought their shredder and reduced the trimmings to mulch. I like this way of doing business because some of the bidders would have taken the cuttings to the dump. I highly recommend Pinnacle Tree Care, Inc., and will invite them back in a couple of years.

I was very reluctant to have tree trimmers on the property again because some years ago I was sued when a worker was injured and his company refused to take care of him, so as the homeowner, I was on the hook. Ernesto called and texted, came by and gave a very good estimate and even said he'd include removing a roof-high weed tree that had grown up along the rear of the house that the insurance hadn't even mentioned.
