I explained my athleticism when asked and what I do regularly for exercise. The phlebotomist Amanda told me that I did not meet the standards for being athletic and having a pulse at 49. We then discussed further what I do and how rigorous my workouts are that are 4 to 6 times per week. Ultimately, I asked for a manager and she said there was not one there and I said well, so who is the supervisor and she says well she's here. I said well that's what I wanted. She says well that's not what you asked. This person was mincing words and she knew what I wanted but again was very unusual. Crissy and RN comes in a few minutes later and we had conversation about what had transpired. She asked me about my workouts and how much I exercise and I told her that I do at least an hour a day 4 to 6 times a week very rigorous weight and cardio training. By the way, neither of them at this point wanted to look at my body and physique, which I have a muscular bill and add that to the equation. Crissy says well it sounds like you meet the standards to donate today, but the untrained phlebotomist had already prompted their computer system to not allow me to donate. At this point in time, I will find another organization that will hopefully have personnel with better interpersonal skills to manage the intake and blood draws!

I waited a few minutes and the technician in the first processing station finally came over and took me to his station. It went okay but I was rejected after the finger prick indicated low iron level. My rating would have been 4-star. This was not the same for my husband who had a 10:50 appointment. It was a complete disaster-- thus the 1-star rating. He arrived on time and waited at the reception desk 25 minutes before anyone acknowledged him. He made it through the initial processing and blood prick. He was then told to go to a booth to complete an EXTENSIVE questionnaire on a computer. The software was so bad my husband had to repeatedly keep tapping buttons to record his answers and move on. It took him nearly and hour because of the awful software issues, which were acknowledged by one of the staff. He was finally referred to the nurse for the physical and had to wait in a line that wrapped around almost the entire interior perimeter of the clinic. It took him back to the reception desk where a staff member told him to start over. He protested and then was taken to the nurse station where he waited again in a long line. The nurse rejected him due to a conflict with his medications. This was after two hours of being sent in circles, dealing with a barely functioning computer/software system, and a totally disorganized staff. We will never go back to this clinic. An appointment means nothing.

Extremely Disappointing Experience…read more I arrived at this plasma center at 12:40 PM as a returning donor, and I am still waiting well over an hour later. What makes this especially frustrating is watching new donors repeatedly being moved ahead of people who have already been waiting, while returning donors are left sitting. When I asked about the delay, I was told they were short-staffed. I understand staffing issues happen, but that explanation was difficult to accept when I could visibly see employees sitting around talking and an entire section of the facility was not being utilized. If you are going to have donors waiting this long, there should at least be clear communication, efficient staffing, and a fair system for processing people who arrived before others. This isn't just about being impatient. Plasma donation involves people giving their time and undergoing a medical screening/procedure. Donors deserve to be treated with respect and professionalism. Management needs to seriously investigate what is happening at this location, including staffing, wait times, and how returning donors are being prioritized. If this is how the facility is routinely being operated, corporate needs to step in and address it. I would strongly encourage management to review the cameras, staffing levels, donor wait times, and employee conduct during operating hours. This experience was unacceptable.

First time to this location…read more My normal Vitalant, Fairway Roseville, apparently had an ant infestation so they called everyone that day to cancel their appts. Since I had diligently taken my Flintstones vitamins for a few weeks and also had a chance to win a new car, I decided to see if another location could take me for my blood donation that day. This Granite Bay location had plenty of open slots and wasn't too much farther. Smaller place than Fairway. Employees were friendly and I learned a lot from the RN who took my donation (I think her name was Christy or some derivative of that). Squeezed out a pint of blood quickly and then it was time for the best part of blood donation--the snacks! Walked over to the refreshment area and there were plenty of great drinks--cranberry, orange, apples juices, water and I think they had some Shasta soda too. But when it came to selecting a snack, I was so disappointed. I don't think I'm a super picky person but these snacks just did not interest me at all! At Fairway, I usually gravitate to the Cheetos but Granite Bay has zero Cheetos! The volunteer said they didn't order those because nobody would choose them and they would just go bad. ?!?! What kind of clientele do they have at this location that would go for icky Vickie's chips over Cheetos or Doritos? They didn't even have BBQ for Vickie's! Just sea salt and vinegar, ugh. I sat there for a good while, trying to find a snack that looked appetizing. Pretty disappointing. It's bad enough Vitalant did away with Famous Amos cookies a few years back but to have no Cheetos or Doritos at this location was pretty sad. But maybe their clientele is older here, so they go for different snacks. Guess it works for them. For me, I will stick to doing my donations at Fairway or maybe other locations but I'm going to skip this one in the future. The staff acknowledged that this was my first time and were careful to answer all of my questions. The actual process of giving the blood was smooth... it just took 10-15 minutes (whole blood donation - other methods take longer). I didn't feel faint or anything like that, so smooth sailing there too - I hung out at the snack bar for a while (they require 15 mins) had a drink and a snack and moved on! The PPA in Berkeley procures blood and bone marrow for research with payment "for your time". They…read moreschedule donors during the mornings on Monday-Thursday so the products can be shipped fresh to the contracting laboratories. Plan to spend quite a while at the first visit filling out your medical history, including any prescriptions you take. If you pass the written screening, small samples of blood will be taken and tested for HIV and hepatitis. Once they are screened, which takes a business day, they will call to schedule your donation. A great thing: if you had questionable historyy from your distant past such that the Red Cross will not accept your blood, it will not disqualify you from donating as long as you never contracted anything. Nawid at the front desk and Barbie who explains and takes the blood are both very personable and effective. A doctor takes the bone marrow from two points in the hip bones. PPA prefers consistent donors, and will call you to ask if you'd like to come in again at the time blood or bone marrow has been replenished in your body. Payment is made in cash immediately afterwards, and was much more than the amount listed on the agreement form which must be signed at each donation. That amount may have been for plasma donation in their TN office. Rather than donate plasma, if you want to help medical science and yourself financially as well, I highly recommend PPA!
