We've gone through the Brain Highways program twice now... The first time with my older son several…read moreyears ago, and now with my younger son. Both boys have Autism (one mild Asperger's type, and the other more severe). And it's been a good experience for both boys. You really need to understand what you're signing up for though... This is a series of TWO eight-week courses ("Pons" and "Midbrain") and you're going to be asked to do physical exercises with your child EVERY day (for 30+ minutes). Some days you're not going to feel like doing it, and your child is going to push back a lot. The BH staff will help you through this though, and it will eventually become a habit. This habit will also need to continue beyond the 16 weeks... until they can demonstrate mastery of the body movements. You're looking at a pretty big commitment time-wise. Are the results worth it? I tend to be really skeptical, and I've wondered many times which results I've seen in my older child came from BH and which were the result of natural maturation. But I can say he made HUGE strides from before & after we did the BH program. He thinks more logically (less emotionally), processes instructions better, and is more compliant. The younger child (who has more "severe" autism) is still going through the program, but we've already seen improvements in his ability to reason and calm himself down. What's interesting to me is that I can monitor his progress somewhat by watching how he "creeps" (one of the movements asked of participants). Right now he heavily favors one leg over the other (the one controlled by his right brain), and there is a distinct pause when moving from one side of his body to the other. Out of curiosity, I put his (non special-needs) sister on the floor to try "creeping" and she naturally switches from one leg to the other (because her brain functions more smoothly). My older son used to have a very awkward "creep", but can now move between left & right sides smoothly. I joked with my husband that if nothing else, the program improved our older son's physical coordination... but I really do believe it helped him intellectually and emotionally as well (which is why we were willing to do it a second time with our other son). For my younger (more autistic) son, we understand it's going to take a LOT of time on the floor practicing moving between his left & right brain. We're basically trying to reprogram his brain - which takes time. But I'm slowly seeing improvements (an occasional kick from his other foot for example). I'm going to keep doing the daily exercises until he (finally) gets that left brain / right brain interaction going - which should help his overall brain development. Everyone I've talked to who has been through the Brain Highways program (and did the exercises daily) has told me they've seen benefits for their child. These people apparently don't Yelp though, so I felt like I should post my thoughts. Hope this helps someone with their decision on whether or not the BH program is a good fit for their child.

So yes, it's been a LONG time and this review probably is not relevant, but I want to give my 2 cents. At the time I did brain highways, I remember having to creep/crawl on the floor there and at home, and do certain exercises. Honestly, as a 9-year-old, I did it because I "had to," but it felt unnecessary and humiliating (to crawl on the floor...). I personally did not take anything beneficial out of the program - I'm sure my parents did, but as a kid, I did not see any reason to be there. I did not have any behavioral issues or learning disabilities, and I just felt like a fish out of water. I did have undiagnosed OCD, which did not get diagnosed until I sought out therapy as an adult. This probably explained some of the things my parents were trying to get help with from brain highways, and I understand that this was an attempt at that. Now that I'm older, I honestly think if there was just a parent class back then, it would have been better. A 9 year old shouldn't be forced to crawl on the floor every day - that's just my opinion. It did not benefit my relationship with my parents, and it was a bit of a mess.

Rather than chance the regular routine I asked if I could go to Church (Mass) with them on Sunday. I was Catholic for a brief period probably 50 years ago but for the most part, have been either Episcopalian or Methodist. Here in the South, the running joke about Episcopalians was that we were Catholics who flunked Latin. Latin is on longer practice but the Catholic Service and the related Episcopal Service are among the most beautiful affirmations of faith out there. Went with my Daughter and Son-in-Law and the service was excellent. The music was great and the Homily or Sermon was to the point and very relevant. Enjoyed it and looking for inspiration in the Carlsbad CA, this is a good place to consider.

The church itself was welcoming enough, and I was able to have a real spiritual experience in spite of my concerns. Unfortunately, the priest's message was deeply disappointing and spiritually troubling to me. He repeatedly emphasized identity, cumulative personal experience, and the idea that there is no real transformation, which to me completely misses the heart of resurrection. I also found the repeated emphasis on Satan, the devil, and prayers framed around first responders and "our troops" to feel more political and fear-based than Christ-centered or universal. For me, the message felt narrow, backward, and out of alignment with love, transformation, and the deeper spiritual truth Easter is supposed to represent. So while there was real beauty in the sacramental part of the Mass, the homily and overall framing left me disturbed rather than uplifted. Your mileage may vary,

The parents are all friendly, I enjoy attending all the events and fundraisers. My children have matured socially through this program and learned basic pre-k skills. They have music class weekly and offer fee based optional extra-curricular activities. Choose St. Mark for you child and you will not be disappointed.

The outdoor play area has so different and fun areas for the kids - a messy kitchen, playground, garden, ship in the sand, water station, track for tricycles... The classrooms have the same appeal. There are sensory areas, little libraries, a playhouse, doll/home sections... We love the Regio Emilia approach - kids guide the learning. I have seen a step up in teaching this preK year getting kids ready for school. I am amazed by how much my son has been interested in letters, sounds and word formation. And the teachers make it fun! I have no doubt he'll be adequate prepared. There has been a transformation this year with a new director and teachers this year. All positive! Communication, enthusiasm and the love for our children has only gotten better. They have been extremely accommating to our family's needs. My children have "extra needs" which they are more than supportive of. At this point, the flexibility in schedule has been very helpful. I plan on spending my youngest there when he's two. have no reservations about this program. I only wish I would have found it sooner.

This is just disgusting and outrageous you go to complain about unruly people only to have staff treat you very poorly shame on this church and why don't you have more staff to monitor what's going on and have a talk with Dan and tell him you don't come at people aggressively and in a threatening way I don't care if you don't like what you're hearing if people weren't acting up I wouldn't have had to complain two thumbs down for this so called church!!!!

Outdoor coffee hour. Beautiful worship. They provide a hot meal and showers on Saturdays for people in the community. Food pantry on Thursdays. Mail service. Document storage. Working with community organizers to keep elected officials on track with their promises for affordable housing and other services to improve Encinitas and the lives of people here. They're not perfect. No group of humans is. But they love people, and are always growing and striving to be better. I highly recommend St Andrew's!

Come see the parent volunteers in concessions who always make sure you have what you need. The best part is watching our student athletes play football under head coach, Sean Sovocool. Its the best gig in town. If you forget your jacket, theirs awesome spirit wear. It's always fun to have the mav wear when rooting for the boys.
