I know this is a little late, but a couple of years ago our dog Axl was really suffering and struggling to breathe. She was 12 and we had no diagnosis from our vet. We called for help but all euthanasia folks were booked up for multiple days. I couldn't stand to see her suffer. I found Dr. Chad Alves via a referral flyer in August 2024. My female German Shepherd was dying (at home). Refusing to get into a vehicle I was forced to find someone to come to my house. Dr. Alves responded immediately. His demeanor toward our NALA and my family was one of a very sympathetic and experienced professional. Fully concur with the other rave reviewers. This was the first time I have had to put a pet to sleep. We had a 19 year old cat who has been steadily declining due to heart failure, hypothyroidism, fluid in her lungs, etc. Based on the Yelp reviews we asked Dr. Alves to come to our house to euthanize our cat. Arriving a few minutes early, he was the model of understanding and sympathy, explaining patiently the process (first a shot to provide some mild anesthesia andpain relief, then a shot of barbiturate to put her to sleep). We took our cat outside to the patio where she liked to sleep in the sun on a blanket, and there he administered the shots, very tender and caring. We were weeping but he was very patient and incredibly supportive, really a counselor. He has many years of experience with hospitals and shelters and it shows. He then took away the body to Caring Pet Services in Santa Cruz, which will cremate her and put her ashes in a personalized urn for us to keep. We knew we had made absolutely the right choice in Dr. Alves, and would only wish all physicians were so supportive and empathetic. read more

Dr Chad was amazing.. My cat Kipton was my best buddy by my side for many important events in my life.. He was obsessed with me and would never leave my side. When he would hear my car he would stop whatever he was doing run to the door to greet me.. Kipton started to have swollen glands in his neck and with antibiotics seemed to get better off and on.. We had many trips back and forth to the vet and spent thousands at vet hospital and office over a 4-6 month period.. Finally it was confirmed he had cancer of the mouth, glands and under his tongue.. Towards the end we had him on high does' of pain medication and it help a lot.. It gave us that extra 1-2wks we needed without him withdrawing due to extreme pain.. When I would give him a dose it was like my best friend had returned while temporary it was wonderful to know he wasn't suffering.. Something you might consider if applicable.. Dr. Chad was suggested to us by a family friend... I hope you never have a reason to consider but if and when that time comes this is the person you want. He explained everything and his bedside manor was just right. Dr Chad made sure Kipton was comfortable with several medicines to help him relax.. I've had 2 experiences with Dr Alves. During the pandemic, he came to my home to put to sleep my 14 year old dog who was suffering from bone cancer. Dr. Chad was so professional. When I spoke with him on Monday evening, he told me what to expect. He wanted to know a little about Cole. I told him Cole was a mid-sized dog and old for a Lhasa Apso. Cole was about 15 years old, and was suffering from age and weakened hind legs. We made an arrangement for Dr. Chad to come Tuesday, at 4:00 pm. He was able to get to my house at 3:30. As we talked, Dr. Chad reemphasized the process as he prepared the first shot. Cole laid against my leg on the patio step we were sitting on. Cole loved for me to scratch the inside of his ears. With the grim task of having to euthanize our elderly cat becoming a reality, trying to decide how best to do it became the focus. Doing it at home to cause the least amount of stress to our cat seemed the best way to go. With a recommendation from or regular Vet, we called Dr. Alves to discuss his service. He was kind and very informative on the phone and after a couple of calls we decided to move forward and set an appointment. Dr. Alves arrived on time and took a few minutes to visit with our kitty putting him and us at ease. Never once did he make us feel rushed and he let the event unfold in its own time, which is priceless. When we were completely ready and gave the go ahead, he administered a sedative and I held kitty on my lap as he relaxed. Not until I said I was ready did he move on to the next step. Dr. Alves helped us put our precious Mimi (16 yr old cocker) to rest this past weekend. He was recommended by Restful Paws. I had spoken to several DVM's but none of them were as informative as Dr. Alves. He provided price for at home euthanasia but never gave me a price for cremation. He advised me to call our vet to get a price or call the place he uses for pricing. All the others I spoke with gave me a price for both which was really expensive. He texted me about an hour before our appointment to make sure we were ready. He arrived on time but did not rush us at all. He was very sensitive to our emotions and took his time in explaining the process to us. Even though we told him Mimi had dementia, was deaf, and blind, he still made sure she did not see his syringe or shaver. He was very gentle with her, petted, and talked to her then gave the first injection. After the second injection he fixed her mouth and head so she looked like she was just sleeping. On Wednesday this week, we had to make the difficult decision to put our precious old boxer, Murphy, to sleep. We knew we wanted to have someone come to our home and we were referred to Dr. Chad Alves by Adobe Animal Hospital. Chad was very personable, introduced himself by first name, and immediately acclimated himself to our home and situation surrounding our sweet dog. He explained the euthanasia process completely, and waited until we were ready to proceed. It was a difficult time but Chad was the man for the job. We already had chosen to cremate Murphy's remains through Caring Pet Service, but he ensured we had the right name and contact number for the owner so we would be taken care of promptly. READ THIS FIRST!!! It's not the only one star. Dr. Alves was recommended to us through a friends veterinarian. (Which I've shared this experience so he won't be recommended again!) When I called the phone number, a man answered, "hello" and I wasn't sure I called a vets office so I said, "hi, I was trying to reach a vets office". He replied, "I am a vet". So I said, "oh, you were referred to me for in home pet euthanasia. Are you taking new clients." His response was, "no, I'm out of town." He sounded completely put out that someone had bothered him. How was I supposed to know I was interrupting? How about you don't answer your phone next time so you won't make what's already a tough time more rotten? Enjoy your time away. I feel sorry for anyone who uses your services-I don't believe you're capable of being sincerely empathetic when you can't even be decent on the phone. I wouldn't want you near my pet. read more

Dr Chad is the most compassionate, helpful vet I have worked with! I had been caring for a ferrel kitty over the last 4 years and came to love him very much. However, with having FIV, he became quicky, gravely ill and I knew we needed to help end his suffering. Dr Chad called me back right away and met us as soon as able to help end the suffering of our sweet ferrel kitty with dignity and compassion. Our baby man Eno was very sick the past few weeks. He had been to the vet several times which terrified him to the point where he would pee all over himself. It was time to say good-bye to our 13 year old Golden Retriever, Shasta, and we had decided to euthanize him at home. I found Chad through online searching, and gave him a call. Chad explained in detail the process he uses -- one shot to put the animal in a deep sleep, pain-free, followed by a lethal shot. He patiently answered all my questions, inquired about disposal of Shasta's remains (we had alternate cremation plans), and made sure I was comfortable with the arrangements. Chad arrived on time. We handled the administrative matters (waiver, payment), and again he made sure that all my questions had been answered. He explained the process to the rest of the family. He stayed in the background while the family said goodbye to Shasta, letting us take as long as we needed. Only when we were ready did he come forward to proceed. The actual process took about 15 minutes, and it was like Shasta went into a deep, quiet sleep, with no pain or stress. Dr. Alves has a wonderfully calm temperament to help families deal with this difficult time. I'm grateful he provides this service. Note: I didn't actually have to use Dr. Alves' services because my dog passed away before his planned visit, but I found him to be very kind and wanted to post my review: I found Dr. Alves online when it was time to put my beloved 12 year-old lab to sleep. I wanted to do it at home for several reasons -- for Jackson to be in a comfortable and familiar place, so our other two dogs could say goodbye, and because I couldn't bear the thought of going into the vet's office and seeing happy pet owners with their puppies, and then leaving without mine. Ugh. Anyway, Dr. Alves was very kind and compassionate when I called him on Wednesday. He explained the procedure to me, then said that if his surgical schedule allowed he would come on Thursday evening, and if not then on Friday afternoon. He said that he would call me between 9 and 9:30 on Thursday morning to confirm his schedule. Well, Jack decided not to wait around. At about 8:50 on Thursday morning, he took his last breaths with his head on my lap. Always taking care of me, he saved me from having to make the decision to put him to sleep (even though I know it was the right decision). Dr. Alves called at about 9:15, and when I shared the news that Jack had already passed away, Dr. Alves provided me with information about Caring Pet Service, which was a great company for taking care of the cremation. It's so hard to write a positive review about someone so closely associated with a negative event in your life, but Dr. Alves' kindness in connection with that sad event deserves to be recognized. read more
